Christian Toto: Even the Liberal Deadline is Complaining About the #WokeLecture Oscars
Plus, Movie Revews: Ford V. Ferrari and Escape Room

What I did mind was a sinking feeling that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, for all its inclusiveness, had wound up excluding more viewers than ever.

Toto writes:

The site's columnist dragged the Oscar ceremony in ways that sounded like a right winger's lament, dubbing the night "an evening of cultural instruction." That's a fancy way of saying, "woke."
The column ends by praising the one comedian who dared target La La Land recently.

Extend a hand, and someone will take it. Deliver a muddled, dressed-up lecture (with music), and you validate what Ricky Gervais so chillingly said at the Golden Globes in January: "No one cares about movies anymore."

As I've mentioned, I want them to get #Woker. I don't want them to realize they're going bankrupt until after the banks foreclose their asses.

Don't cave in to Right-Wing Pressure, Hollywood! You are artists -- we need you to exhibit the bravery that we Civilians could never even aspire to have!

Be brave, be strong, and above all -- Be Woke, Hollywood!

You fly those freak-flags. You fly them high and proud.

And you greenlight that Charlie's Angels sequel with an all-trans cast. And you greenlight that Terminator Sequel starring Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Greta Thunberg.

Here are two quick reviews of movies I saw. I don't watch many movies any more. They're terrible.

But these were good.

Ford V. Ferrari. A good movie and recommended.

Here's where I depart from many: I wouldn't say it's great. I would say if you expect great, you will be disappointed. It's not great.

But it is good, and worth watching. Good is good enough, especially by today's standards.

My problems with the movie are these:

1. I expected more Apollo 13 style "let's engineer our way around this problem with the car" stuff. I was thinking that would be the main fare in the movie, especially afrer the opening set-up stuff about how difficult it is to build a car that is fast enough and durable enough to spend 24 straight hours racing over LeMans' not-so-great roads.

There's really only one Major Thing like that. And it's more a case of Rules Engineering than engineering with steel. It's interesting, but not what I was hoping for.

Did you guys see Tucker: A Man and His Dream? I only dimly remember it, but I remember a lot of stuff involving the small team of engineers hand-building the Tucker prototype. I loved that stuff.

In Ford V. Ferrari, they're often in a garage (a hangar used as a garage), but you just see people doing mechanic-type things in background.

2. I didn't see the main characters as anything except Matt Damon and Christian Bale acting on screen. The Matt Damon character -- Carol Shelby -- was barely characterized. He's just a Solid, Loyal Guy Who Loves Racing. I mean, that's great, but there's not much there beyond being a Good Guy Greg.

The Ken Miles character is given flaws -- he's so uncooperative with others he's self-destructive -- but he's played in a broad, nearly comical way that made it hard for me to take him seriously as a real person.

I hear the real Ken Miles was quite the character, but in the movie, I dunno, he comes off fake to me.

3. There is this Snidely Whiplash Interfering Executive at Ford who has the problem of the Villain who Does Evil Just to Do Evil. I mean, he does everything short of twirling his mustache and tying Ken Miles' wife to the railroad tracks. I get that he's a composite for all the bureaucratic bullshit at Ford, but... he doesn't work as a character. I don't buy him.

I did buy Henry Ford II. The part where Matt Damon kidnaps him is kind of silly, but I bought his performance and characterization.

The Lee Iacocca part was maybe good, but all I could see was The Punisher In a Suit.

So those are my complaints. But the movie is still good. The racing parts weren't as good as the racing parts in some other racing movies I've seen -- I remember being really thrilled by the racing in Days of Thunder -- but there was a scene of night-driving in the rain on not-so-great streets in Ford V. Ferrari that were really nice.

Great? No, not for me. It made me want to see the Ron Howard racing movie with Chris Hemsworth, which I've heard has some visceral racing scenes.

But it's definitely a good movie that almost everyone will like.

And also: The cars -- which I wanted a lot more of -- were of course gorgeous. Some of the best parts of the movie are just Matt Damon driving around in his roadster. Just beautiful cars, even the ones that are supposed to be clunky.

Oh, one last thing: In The Founder, the producers cooperated with the McDonald's corporation and changed some details to McDonald's PR benefit, in exchange for letting the filmmakers use their trademarks and stuff.

One thing the movie changed was claiming that a big dispute with the McDonald brothers was over using a cheaper, easier-to-make shake formula instead of real ice cream.

That happened, but much later. The actual dispute between Kroc and the Brothers McDonald was Kroc's desire to use frozen pre-cut french fries instead of the freshly cut ones the MacDonald's insisted on.

I think McDonald's wanted to avoid that knock on everyone's favorite McDonald's menu item.

Returning this to Ford v. Ferrari:

I'm pretty sure I saw no Ford trademarks or symbols in this movie. And I think I know why:

This movie was brutal to Ford. Ford Motor Co. was really the villain. Not Ferrari, but Ford.

I guess it's a good thing that the movie pulled no punches with Ford. But if you're a Ford fan expecting the movie to be a love letter to the Ford Motor Corporation... no, it's more like a poison pen letter.

Oh, one more good thing: There's a fair amount of Italian in the scenes where they meet with Ferarri.

Escape Room. I expected too much of Ford v. Ferrari and wound up a little underwhelmed. I expected nothing from Escape Room and... really liked it.

As soon as it was over, I started watching it again.

But then, five minutes in, I thought, "Wait, am I really watching Escape Room again? What the hell is wrong with me? Is my life this empty?"

And then I turned it off. Still -- I had the intent to watch it again.

Saw featured what would come to be known as an "escape room" and popularized real-life escape room entertainment in the US and the world.

And now the popularity of escape rooms inspires the movie Escape Room, which is just like Saw, except it's just like Saw.

Well, not exactly like it. The movie also borrows some ideas from Cabin in the Woods and Hostel.

But it's good. Not great -- obviously.

But if you're up for a contrived funhouse suspense movie, this should satisfy.

And I do say "suspense," because this is suspense-based horror movie, not a gore-based horror movie (as in Saw).

Only after the movie was over did I realize, "Wait, I've seen almost no blood at all." There is always a dark tone and atmosphere of menace, and some harrowing scenes of coming death and coming gore, but the camera never focuses on the deaths. It assumes you can fill in the blanks.

I felt like I was seeing blood, I guess. But I wasn't.

The movie, it turns out, was not rated R as I would have guessed. It's rated PG-13. Not for graphic violence, but for the constant suspense that some graphic violence is coming.

Here's the biggest knock I can lay on it, besides it borrowing from obvious sources: The characters are stock and stereotypes with almost nothing to them except the stereotype.

The "Game Geek Stereotype?" OMG, this is the stupidest rewrite of Dr. Sheldon Cooper, except even more divorced from reality. This guy is still arguing this is all just a game with "good special effects" after they're nearly incinerated by a fireball in the opening Oven Room Trap.

This guy's smart? He can't tell the difference between real fire and... carnival attraction special effects? He thinks the technology exists to make realistic fireballs (including blistering heat!) chase after you in a duct?

Does he think this movie takes place on the Holodeck of the Enterprise D?

Whatever, though. You gotta have the Nerd Stereotype.

And what about the stereotype of the smart, smarmy, manipulative White Wall Street Asshole who's about nothing but money and status and high-priced thrills?

Well, he's in this. But here's the twist:

He's black.

And I'm kind of pissed off that the beloved stock character of White Wall Street Asshole has been race-swapped. Will they ever stop taking from us?

The Designated Asshole Characters are really a problem. They're important stock characters in a horror movie, to be sure, but they're clumsily written.

They're assholes in unrealistic ways. Ways that don't help them. Ways that often seem unjustified, even in the tense circumstances. They're literally just being assholes to be assholes.

At some point, the Designated Assholes say things which are actually true like "We don't have time to mourn! We have literally minutes before this next trap kills us!," and then other people argue with them.

Because you gotta keep that pointless bickering going.

The Thing was a great movie for showing how people become realistically vicious to each other when under unbearable stress.

This movie, on the other hand, just has some Asshole Characters being assholes because they read in a screenwriting book that screenplays should include conflict.

This is really only a problem for the first half of the movie, though. After that, some Assholes are eliminated, and other assholes -- in a horror movie cliche that I still always love when I see it -- become much less assholish when they start to realize that maybe they should start cooperating a little if they want to live.

Oh, and some of the escape rooms -- death-traps, actually -- were really great production design. The Pool Hall Trap is my favorite, and I imagine everyone's favorite. All but the silly Outdoor Arctic Set (which I didn't buy, and seemed to almost be a Holodeck) were pretty good.

The movie ends strangely -- they decide they don't want to just bait a sequel. They decide they're going to get the ball rolling and film the first ten minutes of the sequel.

In fairness, I do want to see the sequel.

So kind of an interesting possible choice for a low-effort movie night. It's a horror movie, sort of, but without nasty graphic violence, and just a lot of fear of bloody death. The characters are stock as hell and spend the first forty minutes being way too bitchy and snarky and unpleasant, but they get better when they start realize that these "escape rooms" are not games but death-traps.

I know it's weird that I'm claiming Escape Room was more enjoyable than Ford v. Ferrari, but it's an expectations game, you know? That's why I'm trying to dampen expectations for FvF. It's good, yeah. Just... don't go in expecting something great, something like... Escape Room.

39 I agree about Ford v. Ferrrari. I saw the problem as not being clear if it wanted to be a buddy movie or a man-against-the-system movie. It didn't fully work as either. I think Damon's characterization of Shelby was fair -- Shelby was a guy who had to work and cooperate with the corporations. I thought Bale tried hard to characterize Miles'es renegade-ness and seems to have studied his physicality, but you're right -- he comes off too broadly.

I don't know how he really told Miles about the final compromise, or how Miles took it. That was the defining moment. Always the problem with movies "based on a true story." All movies are fiction.

Old Hollywood had actors who were actual stars. People came to see Bogart be Bogart. The movie was all about that.

Clark Gable, etc. - all of it was "Wow, Gable has such charm and charisma, let's watch him literally eat lunch. In real time." (Gene Siskel reference there.)

Actors today are scrubbed and bland. They have no personality, no mystery, no intellect.

The females are also basically dull.

Which is part of why movies suck. The other part is no one knows how to write.

57 I've been noticing a trend I call Woke 2.0

Woke 2.0 fifilm and TV shows have all the hallmarks of an original woke franchise but they are more story driven and less message driven. They also are not afraid to feature strong male characters. Woke 2.0 stories are generally acceptable to conservatives and progressives alike (although more strident progressives will always complain). The Witcher is a perfect example of Woke 2.0

Another difference is the amount of black characters. Woke 2.0 shows have more black characters and often feature black villains. A good comparison for those of you with kids off Steven Universe vs Craig of the Creek. Steven Universe is entirely message driven based on progressive themes and features mostly white characters especially the two dimensional villains. Craig of the Creek is story driven and features many more POCs.

Wow.

I see far fewer movies than ace, and will probably skip the ones he said are good. Unless they're free and I'm stuck on a long int'l flight or something - and the book I'm reading is bogging down.

Nibbling at older ones of interest though, thanks to free DVDs from library. Gonna watch Anthropoid tonight. Besides free, other good thing about borrowed DVDs, you can "walk out of the theater" in seconds, with a mouse click, if a movie is bad.

78 There's a really cool documentary called Man and Le Mans about Steve McQueen's quest to make the perfect car racing movie.

This is before they had twelve GoPros on every race car. He mounted movie cameras in and on race cars in ways to give you the real thrill of motorcar racing. And he was so committed to authenticity that he completely forgot about story.

That's not fair, he thought that if he just filmed everything well enough a story would emerge. Or they could paste it on in post-production. Mostly he wanted to show what Le Mans racing was really like.

And this was in the days before safety was invented. A stunt driver lost a leg and McQueen sent him a condolence card and some Danish.

It's really an awesome doc. I don't remember if the film ever ended up getting released.

He was not satisfied with the way the stunt riders were doing it, so he did it himself.

The answer is Yes. I was a teen when that movie came out. It was tailor made to manipulate the emotions of girls my age, and oh did it ever. Plus it hit my love of historical fiction. Had a huge crush on Leo and girlcrush on Kate Winslet right after, as they seemed so fresh faced and real.

Of course those crushes came to a screeching halt when I learned how stupidly leftist they both were, and my loathing of them got worse as time went on, and they refused to shut their pie holes and stop hypocritically lecturing to me.

135 Greatest racer in my opinion was Jim Clark, Scottish, raced in the 60s. Beautiful driver, smooth as silk, skilled like nobody;s business. Died, of course, when his Lotus fell apart at Hockenheim, Germany. Clark was also a truly lovely guy.

My uncle raced in the 60s with some of these guys. He even won Sebring in his class. He got out early and became an exotic car dealer.

Poor Guy is often more parody than reality, and this is a good example.

Maybe the documentary is good but the movie itself is awlful. NO plot whatsoever.

I read somewhere that McQueen was John Frankenheimer's first choice for Grand Prix which McQueen turned down due to scheduling reasons and once McQueen saw Grand Prix on the big screen immediately regretted it and wanted something that could top it. Thus the movie 'LeMans' was born.

I am almost exactly the opposite. Rich grates more and more on me as time goes by. He actually has some good thoughts on movies I agree with, and then there are others where it is like 'you are an idiot.' I can see why Mike hangs out with them, and also why he treats him like he does.

And if I see another episode with Culkin in it (I have just stopped watching them when he shows up) I might just give up on the show. Probably not, but it'll be tempting.

John Nolte agrees with you, and had a great article at Breitbart on this a while back. He posits the men of that era had LIVED -- had gone to war, truly been independent, lived interesting lives. That lived experience translated into their on screen personas and elevated the material.

Modern actors have lives removed from all of that. Thus they are blander individuals, and their perfomances suffer.

We don't get any more Christopher Lees who know what the sound of shivving a man with a knife actually sounds like, for example.

152 Best part of Grand Prix is lots of by gone era of F-1 drivers are in it as themselves, and though F-1 still uses some of those old tracks not the long versions used in the 60s. The banked track at Monza is a show piece of the movie.
I think both Grand Prix and LeMans have just enough side stories to keep them moving.

They also found two other addresses in Atlanta that also received 1000's of refund checks. If I make o ne little tiny mistake on my return, I get a letter right away asking for money back and they can't catch 24 million dollars to 1000's of different IDs going to one address.

It's been a while, but my sense was that the stories were low-key, not existential. The existential part was the fact that the mortality rate for the drivers was akin to fighter pilots.

People forget that, now. So you have these guys who are a split second from a fiery death dealing with normal relationship problems.

And cool cars.

Well Sam Jackson is a cliche and sucks, but the original Saw was ALSO a police procedural with two black cops.

The original short film didn't have enough story as feature, so they wrote this basically-independent movie of Danny Glover and his sidekick hunting the Saw killer. That's about half the first movie.

Not the better half, but it is a big part of the movie.

Drag Race is one of my few guilty pleasure trash shows. AOC going on it is no big deal, every episode has a "celebrity" judge and half the time people don't know who they are.

I'm hoping it is the "Hillary goes on Broad City" type of cameo where it annoys the voters and they stay home. Show is filmed in LA not NY. Need to see how it plays in the Bronx. Dumb of Rupaul to tie his brand to hers and pollute it, but very sly of her to hitch her wagon to his.

Very accurate little detail, surprised me. Don't think they got a lot of use after Guadalcanal, Thompsons replaced them in that slot.

Your eyes capture roughly 12 'pictures' per second, films are shot at twice that rate. Basically you only see about 1/2 the picture the first time you see it, and your brain fills in the missing information. When you see it a second time you tend to see the frames you missed, and fill in with your memory of what you saw before. This is why films often seem different somehow, the second time your see them.

Thought those really weren't much in use at that time and place. Thought the Marines clambered over the sides of the conventional landing boats they still used.

311 There is a documentary about Carol Shelby on various platforms, Netflix right now I think, that I highly recommend if you want the details and history of the car build and dealing with Ford. They were pretty sinister all right.

Shelby was a wild man. He had a literal heart attack while winning an endurance race -- at least one. His doctor gave him like 2 years to live several times in his life. He was more a Tesla type, not so much a wrench man as an idea guy and a general designer. And he had this ultimate team of kickass car guys who built his cars.

The story of how Ford built their car, raced it and it failed, then took it to Shelby and he basically rebuilt the thing from the ground up is pretty cool.

There are few that are distinctive and actually look good. The new model of Mustang, I think they nailed the fastback look. The front is serviceable, but not a bad evolution from the retro look. The convertible I hate (this has been true of Mustangs for decades. They get a decent looking hard top and the convertible looks horrific.)

Vettes. I always loved the 70s Mako body vette. Sinuous. I realize this was at the heart of malaise so the performance was not as good, but they were pretty for the time. The early C1 and C2 are still awesome today. Just absolutely gorgeous. The new ones look like any other eurotrash supercar.

I was washing my (blue mustang) and a guy pulled up to the water faucet in a gorgeous C5(? the last of the pop up headlights.) British Racing green. Beautiful. We complimented each other's car and complained about trying to find a good car wash.

I like the new body Miata. The last one looked like a mobile wash tub. The previous one (which I had in BRG SE 2001) was very beautiful.

Brie Larsen directed and starred in a film called "Unicorn Store," with a female scriptwriter too.

It was so unbelievably retarded and pointless that I was left kind of stunned. I mean, it was like a 4-year-old girl's fantasy, without even being an adult's rendering of a four-year-old girl's fantasy. I felt like the script was literally written by a four-year-old.

The "plot," if you can call it that: Brie Larsen is a 20-something slacker who grudgingly gets a job through a temp agency at a PR firm. For no apparently reason, and apparently with no connection to the rest of the plot, she finds an invitation card telling her to go to a certain address. So she goes there, and Samuel L. Jackson (???!???) plays a flamboyantly homosexual store clerk who convinces her that she needs to by a unicorn from him. Then she suddenly remembers (never mentioned in the film up to this point) that when she was a toddler she really liked unicorns, so she agrees to buy a unicorn for him. BUT THEN Samuel L. Jackson tells her she must prove to him that she DESERVES a unicorn, so she hires a different black guy to build a unicorn corral for her. Oh, and then her creepy boss at the PR firm tries to put the moves on her. And then she gets a unicorn. The end.

I was trying to conceive of some way that this wasn't written by and for 4-year-olds, and the only thing I could come up with wa sa crucial scnene when she's in Samuel L. Jackson's "Unicorn Store" and he shows her a unicorn horn, and she fondles it and says, "It's so big!" And so I thought: Maybe this movie is about Big Black Dicks, and the two guys she's mesmerized by are black and both have phallic-symbol objects (horn, and the other has a big hammer), while the creepy boss is white and therefore has a small dick which is what makes him creepy.

But I doubt that was even intentional. I was just straight-up infantile and pointless.

356 Magnum P.I. was a great show. There is nothing on today that is remotely comparable. I realize there is a new Magnum but refuse to watch it. I assume it is like all the other remakes. Remember the remake of Red Dawn?

It would be impossible to remake Magnum or really anything from that time period because the culture has changed so much. You can use the same names and location but that is about it.

One recurring theme in the original Magnum was Vietnam, POW's and mercenaries. Mercenaries were a part of pop culture in the 80s. You could go years without hearing that word today.

I think they add something special, making it more noir than sci-fi in tone.

You don't need it on the second or third + watching it, but that first viewing...yeah, I think its useful.

so, the movie was always supposed to have a voice-over, from the first script.

But they kept rewriting it and calling Ford back in to record new versions of it.

The one they used was the last one, where Ford was phoning it in because he hated working on the movie and hated even more being called in without additional pay to re-record voice overs.

I think I heard that the first and second versions are actually decent, and that maybe it would be interesting to see a movie where they were re-inserted.

Many movies achieve greatness by accident.

The indifferent reading by Ford reinforces the world-weariness of his character.

It wasn't meant to be, but it's prefect. If he read with more verve or emotion, it would have been hard to reconcile the voice with the burnout on the screen.

Your Grace is correct, as always. A fantastic low-budget movie. It could literally have been done as film school project. There was essentially one set for the entire movie with cut scenes of people crawling into and out of the same set with different lighting.

The story of how Ford built their car, raced it and it failed, then took it to Shelby and he basically rebuilt the thing from the ground up is pretty cool.

To me the best part of Shelby's story was the Cobra. In four years he took it from a single prototype to the World manufacturer's Championship, which the Cobra team won in Reims, France on July 4, 1965.

Original Cobras are worth a small fortune now, easily a million bucks. The last Daytona coupe I think sold for $7.5M.

409 Part of the problem with doing a movie on Shelby is he led a really interesting life and was such a bigger than life character, and you could make a movie on a lot of aspects of his life.. There are a few good interviews with him. I thought this interview is pretty good.

There wasn't really any depth (as Ace notes), and the focus on the Miles relationship excluded a lot of the other stuff going on (like the actual engineering of the car in England, that Shelby actually took responsibility for the "tie", his warm relationship with Iacocca and others that ran cover for him at Ford, etc.). But they made an entertaining movie that wasn't crap. Just "fine".

415 414... Like I said, it wasn't crap and I would watch it again. I am probably a bit jaded because I ate and breathed Shelby as a kid (friend had one and his Dad was Pres. of the Northern CA Shelby club so they always had Cobras and GT350/500's at their house).
They could have really made a disaster out of it but didn't.
I'll go with Jane Seymour. I didn't even see Live and Let Die until about 10 years ago.

416 I was disappointed in "Ford v. Ferrari". I wanted more geeky engineering stuff, more fully realized characters (Carol Shelby was married something like eight times, but to go this movie, the guy was a monk), and better racing scenes: if I had a dime for every time a car pulled up next to the leader, the drivers exchanged steely glances, then a gearshift lever was pulled back - always back, never forward - and the car roared into the lead, the movie would have paid for itself.

The movie didn't suck, I guess, and it treated masculine pursuits more or less seriously: there was no "toxic masculinity" bullshit. But it could have been so much better.

Frankly, the movie had me rooting for Enzo Ferrari. He was a craftsman and engineer who built a company that cared about building the best and most beautiful cars possible, and he wasn't going to let a dick like Henry Ford II take it away from him. And the translation scene, when Ferrari says just what he thinks of Ford, is hilarious.

Still, if you want to see a good movie about racing, dial up Ron Howard's "Rush".

The Senna - Prost battle was fantastic. I like LeMans. Not a great film in that there are 18 words in it, but I love the Porsche's of that era.

I, too, saw Ford v Ferrari and thought it was enjoyable. Not great, but great fun. But then I was on either Netflix or AmazonPrime and came upon a Shelby documentary that I figured I'd watch, just to see what the film fudged. It was really good -- filled in the gaps of reality and nuance that FvF missed. Like the fact that Shelby had already won LeMans -- the same years the GT40 lost -- in his own Daytona. So, he actually had two cars competing in LeMans at the same time -- he wasn't just eating his gut out over the GT40.

This documentary led into another one about Ayrton Senna, which was really good, and it led me to binge-watch the Formula 1 series on Netflix. It follows a few teams through the entire 2018 season, and they do a wonderful job of allowing some of the fantastic footage from the driver's POV to rule each episode. Really gives you a good perspective on the insanity these guys chose as a profession. Good stuff.
