AG Barr: Trump Needs to Stop Tweeting About Open DOJ Matters Under My Jurisdiction; The Tweets "Make It Impossible for Me to Do My Job"

I mean: True.

In an exclusive interview, Attorney General Bill Barr told ABC News on Thursday that President Donald Trump "has never asked me to do anything in a criminal case" but should stop tweeting about the Justice Department because his tweets "make it impossible for me to do my job."

Barr's comments are a rare break with a president who the attorney general has aligned himself with and fiercely defended. But it also puts Barr in line with many of Trump’s supporters on Capitol Hill who say they support the president but wish he'd cut back on his tweets.

Barr is one of the few people in Trump's administration I trust. Does Trump trust him? Is he capable of hearing advice and adjusting his behavior?

Well, we've seen no signs thusfar. But I guess we can hope.

"I think it's time to stop the tweeting about Department of Justice criminal cases," Barr told ABC News Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas.

The DOJ was already reviewing the insane Stone sentencing recommendations and preparing to overrule the rogue prosecutors. But Trump's tweets make it seem like Barr is making political decisions at Trump's behest.

Which Barr is actually permitted to do, and Trump is permitted to order him to do.

But this causes unnecessary problems -- and now new calls for the only man I trust in the DOJ to recuse himself or appoint another Special Counsel.

Which is the same playbook they ran with Sessions -- where it worked.

Can it work again? Can the Democrats make a conflict-of-interest allegation and then get a Democrat Deep Stater in the DOJ to issue a memo offering the opinion that the AG should recuse?

I wouldn't bet against that. And I sure wouldn't help the Democrats run the Sessions Playbook on Barr.

Trump cannot make Barr appear to be his political catspaw and expect Barr to remain the AG. And to avoid recusing himself.

And Trump should really, really want Barr to remain the AG and avoid recusing himself.

9 Barr is playing the legal game, Trump is playing the political game.

Barr has a point, from a Legal point of view, Trump's tweet was a big complication that he didn't need, that is going to get every decision he makes second guessed by Judges and Juries.

Trump has a point, he was bringing the corruption present in this trial to the attention of the country's voters.

They play to two different audiences. I'm sure they'll patch up any differences, since they need each other. Trump needs Barr, especially, so he better treat him nicely.

This fuckin' self-aggrandizing bitch is drunk on all the praise and accolades heaped on her by the identity-politics-loving media:

"Record-breaking astronaut: 'Do what scares you.' "

Some chick just "broke the record" for the longest time in space by a woman.

She basically says, "Hey all you girls, go into outer space and be astronauts! Fly through the stars! Like that big hero, me!"

First of all, you idiot, one gets chosen by other decision-makers to be a NASA astronaut. You can't just stroll in and announce that you are brave and demand to be sent into outer space.

Second of all, and most importantly:

You are just a passenger on a ship designed and paid for and invented and flown by other people, you bitch. You achieved nothing on your own. You are just an affirmative action hire for PR purposes. Men -- men men men men - did every single thing to create that space station, from the underlying science to the nuts-and-bolts construction to everything else -- and then gave you a ticket to ride on it. YOU DESERVE NO CREDIT. And yet you sit there bathing in the glory, and never once say, "I was part of a team" or "Really, I was just a passenger," or anything like that.

Fuck you. Seriously.

I suspect Barr is not going to be effective, but I will withhold anything approaching final judgement until his House testimony next month and Durham's findings and recommendations a bit later.

It is my sincere belief that most of what we have witnessed over the last 3-1/2 or 4 years is democrats attempting to poison the jury pools so they personally will not be convicted for their crimes.

Barr has to get a provable case to court -- and -- there has to be a jury willing to actually see what is placed before them.

This is not a simple problem and all parties can be both right and wrong at the same time.

82 One of the most damaging things to ever happen was the DOJ becoming "apolitical." All that means is that it is a permanent liberal bureaucracy. We had a POTUS appoint his brother the AG for goodness sake.

We do not need the permanent level of lawyers dictating how things should be done etc. Each POTUS should staff it as they see fit, with the Senate obviously weighing in on senior appointments.

But now, we are supposed to believe that the FBI and all US Attorneys are just loyal Americans. B.S.

Counterpoint: If Trump hadn't tweeted about it, no one would know just how fucked up the whole thing is, all of the perfidy by the judge, all of the incompetence and malfeasance, etc.

I suspect the tweeting on stuff like does make Barr's job harder, and will make jury selection really difficult (as it is with *any* high-profile party in the social media age) - but if he didn't do it no one would *ever* have found out how the DoJ behaved. It would have been quietly cleaned up or ignored with no one the wiser. The problem is, though, that people need to be made aware of this kind of BS.

I understand Barr's position but Trump is Trump and no matter what he may have tweeted or said about the Stone case, he is 100% right about it. Yes, he should be careful and I actually think Trump is cautious, despite appearing to shoot from the hip. It only appears he does that because no other Republican has ever defended himself, let alone with such gusto.

I don't really care about appearances because the Democrats will just spin anything to be the greatest crime since the Holocaust or something.

For those saying this should have occurred in private, maybe in an ideal world, yes. 148 Meh.

Barr should definitely have said this directly/confidentially, not to the "press". There is no explanation, regardless of how many dimensions and contingencies one dreams up, that makes *this* the way to communicate this message.

And absolute nonsense about Trump's tweets hurting him with a meaningful or even semi-intelligent % of the electorate. Most are never aware of them. Most that are aware don't understand what he's even getting at half the time, because they don't know much about what's going on or what matters.

The only area where an actual technical issue arises - as opposed to the rather humorous fainting going on over how a scandal-ravaged and basically comically non-credible "justice" process and DOJ is being damaged by Trumpentweets - is commenting on any UCMJ cases. Undue command influence is a very real and important concept under UCMJ, so any president is best advised to remain silent there (pardons are another matter entirely - whether they occur prior to or after UCMJ process).

162 127 I think Trump will listen to Barr. After all, Barr's not telling Trump to stop tweeting, period, like so many others are, he's just telling Trump to stop tweeting about open DOJ investigations. Posted by: csmats at February 13, 2020 04:42 PM (X5VFN)

I think it comes down to what one expects out of the DOJ. If one thinks all these arrests are coming at some point, it makes sense to let the process continue and try to avoid disrupting it. If one thinks that little will come of it, it makes far more sense to make direct appeals to the people.

yeah, some action on obvious crimes would be nice ... but Barr going public on this at least in a sense, clears him of being Trump's catspaw. Now that he has shown some distance from Trump ... Trump can keep winning the Twitter war.

And yeah, the whole impeachment was a PR/campaign war. It would be nice to have Barr say he wishes Brennan and Clapper and Schiffty would quit running their mouths, telling lies. ... But whatever ... hard to tell what the real dynamics are inside the DC DeepState run corridors.

Barr is still an insider we hope is about to bring the hammer down on the coup plotters, restore some dignity to the DoJ ... Trump is still the outsider waiting for some justice (waiting while tweeting).

180 Nonsense, Barr should have and could have easily dodged the question, a million obvious ways to do it.

182 The DOJ/FBI is a hive of snakes and scorpions. It is nominally (meaning Constitutionally) part of the executive and under Trump's complete control. However, due to custom only, the DOJ/FBI gets to act like its own fucking branch of government not answerable to the elected officials or even the President they nominally (again Constitutionally) work for. And this particular DOJ/FBI has been caught conspiring against and attempting to entrap this particular President. Trump could have sat passively by while the DOJ/FBI framed his ass, or he could say something to defend himself. But if he says something to the DOJ/FBI (you know those guys that work for him) he is interfering and must be impeached. Twitter was the only way he could defend himself and express his frustration with a DOJ/FBI that is working against him. He cannot give instruction directly to them. So, he tweets to the world that he is on to them.

I say tweet away until the DOJ/FBI stops conspiring against him and starts administering equal justice.

If Barr wants him to stop, then Barr needs to get off his ass, put down the bagpipes, and start issuing indictments.

195 Unfortunately, the problem is not Trump nor his tweeting.

We have a) a media complex totally in the tank for the Dems and leftism b) a thoroughly corrupt DOJ c) a thoroughly corrupt FBI d) a thoroughly corrupt Uniparty running Congress and e) mysterious oligarchs that are funding this corruption directly and indirectly.

To the extent that the Donald casts a light on it that the apparatchiks of the Deep State don't like, Barr doesn't like it and yes it does make his job harder because a through e listed above are hammering him.

Tough. Bill Barr knows why these folks do what they do--it is for power and money. He knows if and what he is going to do about it but hasn't shared it with you and I.

And he apparently dismisses any concerns that DJT supporters have that for nearly 4 years that the Deep State has imprisoned people, ignored some of its deepest legal traditions such as lawyer client privilege, the abuse of solitary confinement for a political prisoner, exhibited widespread corruption in prosecutions through manipulation of discovery, jury composition, and illegal surveillance.

And there has been not much happen to all of the perpetrators.

So, I would like to ask Bill Barr, "'Is this lack of accountability because this the standard MO for the past 30 or more years in the IC and DOJ? Is this what you are trying to hide? Do we have a total disrespect for the Constitution, federal law, ethics, and morality all because a class of rotten people (the political class) in Washington want fame, power, and money.

I would say to him that if the release of this unpleasant information would cause the fall of the government and its political class and leave it for us to begin anew, then you have just made the case that our governmental structures can and should be replaced because the rottenness cannot be fixed.

Because...

Donald Trump: John Kelly 'Misses the Action and Just Can't Keep His Mouth Shut'

Pelosi: Trump's 'Political Interference' in Stone Sentencing 'Is an Abuse of Power'

DERSHOWITZ: 'ALL CIVIL LIBERTARIANS' MUST DEFEND ROGER STONE

etc

the back and forth
the threats of obstruction

Dear POTUS, please focus on Election and House seats.

1. Barr should have said this in private. (Assumes he didn't.) news flash he probably did.

2. Barr shouldn't have gone to the press and kept it quiet. (Assumes this in the press is bad for Trump and/or Trump didn't know and approve the message ahead of time) news flash an open disagreement over a very minor issue between Trump and Barr right now helps Trump by making Barr appear as not a strictly political puppet. And they probably did discuss exactly this prior.

Making all the noise look like a partisan dogfight is a default win to the party with the economic boom and incumbency. Further, it nationalizes the election.

Ideally this election becomes about Trump and his economy versus whatever loony tune the Dems put up. The more the dems are able to focus on local races and differentiating themselves, the worse it is for us.

266 I actually understand why Bare would say this, from the perspective of someone who needs authority from American legal professionals. And I'm sure a lot of professional Republicans would have much easier lives if the President stopped tweeting. Stuck to tested Reagan/ Bush marketing.

But he is the President. More: the political demands of the President have become more acute because of the glacial lack of progress from the DOJ. If Bill Barr wants to risk Trump- or his successor- calling attention to the fate of Stone/ Flynn versus McCabe/ Wolfe/ Comey? If Barr really wants President Trump asking him why Epstein was killed in a federal prison?

He needs to seriously consider if he wants the President saying "Burn it down" instead of "Trust the plan." We don't have the rule of law, we have rule of lawyer. And against that, the President will not need to appease the judicial branch or the AG.

But unfortunately he, and we, live in this one. It's okay for him to ask for the perfect non-political setting out loud, he's human, but he's going to damn well get this one, and he still has a job to do.

Trump is the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the United States, not the NY Times or Adam Schiff or Lindsey Graham or even Bill Barr. We do not need the permanent level of lawyers dictating how things should be done etc. Each POTUS should staff it as they see fit, with the Senate obviously weighing in on senior appointments.

But now, we are supposed to believe that the FBI and all US Attorneys are just loyal Americans. B.S.

Trump tweeting about one aspect of that clown show doesn't do a thing to impair this mythical creature of Barr's "apparent independence", and Barr saying what he said (if accurate) doesn't do a thing to establish such independence in the eyes of anyone that matters (= voters, not empty suit partisan Beltway idiots, or 1,457-dimensional strategery blog commenters).

381 Right Blonde M., we don't know he hasn't said it in private.

I amend my earlier comment to make it contingent on that very unknown factoid.

But it's silly to assert that the difficulty for Barr comes not from the mess he has to deal with (a DOJ with lots of rogue, or criminal and abusive, actors), but from the very rare public comments by the president on one tiny aspect of it all.

Note that there was universal snickering/condemnation about the initial sentence recommendation from knowledgeable observers - as well as an immediate anonymous smack-down from a senior DOJ official ("not what was briefed to the department").

Trump's tweet came in that context.

Meh.

Given that military ROE has resulted in a consistent string of failures since Vietnam, and that military commanders of the past haven't hesitated to use reprisal killings or summary execution of spies, bragging about the military's incapacity to punish deserters isn't endearing. 408 Idiotic on Barr's part. Trump speaks out about blatant and incontestable politicization within the DOJ and the head of the DOJ (whose power is 100% delegated to him by Trump) insinuates that this criticism of politicization constitutes politicization, which is the dishonest line pursued by DEMOCRATS.

"Only I, the AG, can criticize and try to end politicization in the DOJ," Barr insinuates. NO. Trump has it within his sole Article II to act as his OWN Attorney General. DOJ has NO independence from the president.

Presidential influence does not per se constitute politicization. Only IMPROPER influence constitutes politicization, influence that seeks to override the rule of law for political reasons.

Trump is EXPLICITLY doing the opposite. He is naming and shaming blatant politicized double standards STILL being perpetrated by the coup plotters STILL wielding tremendous power at DOJ.

Barr needs to be cleaning his dirty house. Instead he is protecting the resistors of democracy. We STILL haven't got a real AG.

The Stone case is detonating for all the right inherent reasons (farcical jury, utterly political prosecutors) - even though Stone's probably guilty - and that's where the story is.

Posted by: rhomboid at February 13, 2020 05:03 PM (El6T/)

Stone if anything, is guilty of process crimes - ie, lying to the FBI. Which is nonsense when looking at the big picture here.

Nobody would have known who Roger Stone is, save for a few fringe characters, but he chose to support his friend Donald Trump for President. Deep State went out to make him an example. Laws, honesty, reputations, be damned.

And now, the corrupt Judge Amy Jackson Berman, and her corrupt jury, are outed for the world to see.

How can a system be so fucked up as to leave Roger Stone as the backstabbed hero?

503 My take on this is that Barr is a member of Trump's cabinet. There is no constitutional requirement that he be entirely independent of Trump and/or his policies. It's the AG's job to serve the citizens of this country by helping the duly-elected President implement the view of "justice" that got him elected.

I understand that, politically and legally, it may be advantageous at times for a President to appear to remain aloof during individual investigations. However, the AG answers to the President in the end. If he isn't furthering the cause (draining the swamp) - he needs to get busy or get gone.

Posted by: MaDuece at February 13, 2020 05:41 PM (0dmP2)

504 Barr is no different than Sessions in that they both serve the same function: keep Trump away from the real levers of power as much as possible. 509 Objection! The AG *is* the President's catspaw. Unitary executive and all that. If Congress doesn't like it they can either run their own investigation or pass a law appointing an independent counsel. Assuming they have the votes to overcome a veto.

Next time some sob sister starts bitching about appearances, we point out Trump never *intended* to create an appearance. And no reasonable person could or would conclude from that anything other than the President did nothing wrong.

1. Call strikes - get the strike zone back to where it was in the 1930's

2. Move the mound back 3 feet.

4. Drastically limit the number of pitcher that can be used in a game.
Posted by: Archer at February 13, 2020 04:32 PM (gmo/4)

The length of the game is tied mostly to the pitchers. The sort that pitch strikes and do it quickly can end a game in less than an hour - Tom Browning of the Reds had a perfect game in 88 against another fast working pitcher that was just under an hour.

Put a time limit between pitches or you call a balk, don't grant timeouts to batters at will, and encourage the pitchers to get the ball in play so fielders can get outs and speedups will come.

The current cult of the K fights against that.

Barr doing this "on the mainstream media" provides the lip service that the asshole dems like to hear. It provides a bit more breathing room for things to ACTUALLY HAPPEN. Trump and Barr have most likely discussed this tactic in private.
Everyone please fucking RELAX

522 And I really, really want Barr to shut his big fat piehole and do his job. And I hope Trump tweets twice as much. So tired of people criticizing him for it when it is the only way he can talk to his base.

523 MEH. indict someone or STFU. premature proclamations of sainthood for people like Barr never end well for us, do they ? Barr and Durham, to me are just two more deep state jagoffs until proven otherwise. Barr has done exactly NOTHING of consequence since taking over. The same D bags at DOJ are all still there playing their games. The ticks have all tocked and what do have to show for it ? Zip zilch nada.

524 Trust Barr?

Put some fuckers in jail, then I'll trust him.

So far he's only a little bit better than Trey Gowdy.

525 I have seen no evidence Barr is doing his job. Barr warned us early on he was there to save the institutions. He is one of them when you get eight down to it. Anyone here think Comey is in trouble? Brennan? Clapper? Sure.

His comment did make one thing clear. He and Trump are not collaborating! Lol.

526 In Australia anyone with any law background can not sit on a jury. I'm just gobsmacked that in the US the jury fore person was a lawyer, no less. Is this right, 677 district court judges and Stone and Manaforte get same judge?

527 Ya... ok... then again if he would start arresting those fuckers that are standing in plain site and we all know their names he wouldn't have to tweet.
He would anyway, but not about Barr.
