But seriously, Wikipedia sez:

"The Biglin Brothers: John (died April 19, 1886[1]), James (1851 -- 1917[2]) and Bernard (Barney) (1840 -- 1924) were brothers from New York active in professional rowing during the decade following the American Civil War, when rowing was one of America's most popular spectator sports. John and Barney were the subject of a series of eleven paintings by Thomas Eakins. "

The United States cannot, & will not, become such a difficult place to deal with in terms of foreign countries buying our product, including for the always used National Security excuse, that our companies will be forced to leave in order to remain competitive. We want to sell...

....product and goods to China and other countries. That's what trade is all about. We don't want to make it impossible to do business with us. That will only mean that orders will go to someplace else. As an example, I want China to buy our jet engines, the best in the World....

....I have seen some of the regulations being circulated, including those being contemplated by Congress, and they are ridiculous. I want to make it EASY to do business with the United States, not difficult. Everyone in my Administration is being so instructed, with no excuses...

123 This looks kind of... I ain' no arte connooser, so I'm not sure how to put it. (Woody, with a hint of cherries.)

Gritty? Stippled, almost? Similar feel to pointillist, but higher resolution.

The man and his skiff scull are a finely detailed study. The waters, though, are horizontal strokes. The sky gets especially loose. Bluest at the top, getting dirtier down toward the horizon, to meet the brownish palette of the lower part. Muted and, like the rower, isolated.

Altogether, I like it. Leaves me wondering what the rower is thinking about, out there, alone. (Thinking: I can beat that team back there!)

131 Back in the day the Charles river basin between Boston and Cambridge used to have sewage bubblers pumping untold gallons of raw sewage up into it. You could go up to the observation deck in the Pru and see the brown surface turbulence. The crew teams from all the elite universities practiced on that body of water. Probably tells you everything you need to know about our betters.

From CITYLAB:

"... In much of the Boston area, the EPA found that these were, in fact, the same system. Local sewage infrastructure had been built in the late 19th or early 20th centuries, long before the environmental movement began efforts to clean up public waterways. When water levels were low, all of the liquid in the system -- both sewage and rainwater -- flowed harmlessly to be cleaned at a treatment center on Deer Island in Boston Harbor. When a major rainstorm hit, however, these systems got backed up. Everything in the pipes, sewage and all, would flush directly into the Charles and its tributaries through older drainage pipes that now violate the federal Clean Water Act.

Early clean-up efforts began in the late 1980s following major litigation surrounding the environmental impact on Boston Harbor. In the years before these projects began, Walsh-Rogalski says there were 1.7 billion gallons of this sewage-rain mix dumping directly into the Charles. Over the last few decades, EPA-enforced renovations to municipal sewage systems have reduced that number 99.5 percent."

This was right in front of the bridge where all the spectators were standing. It was hilarious, the oars came out and were starting to be used as pikes, there was hair and tee shirt pulling. If they had swords the aggrieved boat probably would have tried a boarding party. The Saratoga county sheriff had a boat there and they come out with lights flashing and siren going to break up the brawl. Most fun I ever had at one of those races.

However, I think as with the RCC some lawyers and people smell money and go after that since. as with the RCC if someone has died they're not there to defend themselves or have representation. 191 The effectiveness to me of this painting comes from the careful details in the man's musculature and the accurate if slightly subdued colors of a light breeze and partly cloudy sky. That places the man in the scull as the center of the painting and as the focus. The detail of man and boat almost pops against the softer appearence of the background. I especially like the way he captured the different shades of the water as seen from the level of the boat.

196 Early clean-up efforts began in the late 1980s following major litigation surrounding the environmental impact on Boston Harbor. In the years before these projects began, Walsh-Rogalski says there were 1.7 billion gallons of this sewage-rain mix dumping directly into the Charles. Over the last few decades, EPA-enforced renovations to municipal sewage systems have reduced that number 99.5 percent."
Posted by: Undocumented at February 18, 2020 09:55 AM (5NMZN)

When I worked in Boston one of the building renovations our firm designed was featured on the cover of Modern Steel Construction magazine. It was a renovation of an old warehouse into very nice offices sitting right on the Fort Point Channel. A few years after the harbor cleanup started the whole building collapsed into the channel. Turns out the clean up allowed marine bores to move back in and they had started happily munching on the wooden pilings of the building. Law of unintended consequences. There were a lot of buildings on the waterfront that had to have their pilings wrapped once the water got cleaner.

274 hi guys I'm really tired - had a looooong weekend of nonsense and another long traveling weekend coming up

just wanted to pop in and chat - first off I agree that the RCC should allow married priests.

growing up we had a family friend who was a "consort" of a local priest. she was pretty and as far as I know that relationship never ended. but why does it have to be like this? rumor is such a relationship is why our Pope (the real one) had to "step away."

I was thinking about the American Dirt (the novel about Mexican migrants that is getting attacked by the SJWs for appropriating)...

if a while lady cannot write a novel from the perspective of a Mexican lady in other respects similar to her, why do MY KIDS have to read nothing but non-western-white-guy crappo novels in school?!??! can we stop "appropriating" awful books like The Bean Trees now PLEASE!?!

let them read good books again! they've grown to hate reading bc they have to read awful books written by under talented yet diverse writers all the time

and it also makes them exposed to very adult themes way way too early (House on Mango Street?!?!)

plus boys should not always have to read books by women authors. that's GOT to also be appropriation!

otherwise males might want to write a book from the perspective of a female, which should not be allowed correct? to get them ready to write only from the appropriate, allowable perspective, they should be exposed only to white guys' writing

lol I'm joking but well it would be a nice change for them anyway!!

Exactly. What they want is the hand of God to descend from the clouds and flick their enemies over the horizon, then flip them the bird as they sail away.

Except they don't believe in God, any form of deity, nor any afterlife, so they have to try to imagine up an impersonal force of temporal justice to fill that yearning... then they wonder why the world always lets them down.

But the failure of the universe to provide justice on its own keeps them angry, and for their leaders, that's not a bug - it's a feature.

It's remarkable how modern the editing is in the original 1968 version. Quick cuts, one after the other, except for the actors' names (and even they are short), so that you're left with an *impression* of Hawaii, and all cut to the beat of that incredible theme. Very modern.

319 Read an interesting breakdown on the Conservative Treehouse of why these cases(Flynn for example) are being outsourced to AG's outside of DC . Were you aware that the FISC ordered DOJ to track down all the fruit of the poisonous tree that came from the illegal fisc requests? This means that all the data that came from the Carter Page wiretaps is illegal and could cause the cases to be thrown out of court. This seems pretty significant to me and I haven't seen it talked about anywhere. The reason these case reviews need to be outsourced is because all the actors in DOJ who handled these cases are implicated and therefore conflicted.

334 319 Read an interesting breakdown on the Conservative Treehouse of why these cases(Flynn for example) are being outsourced to AG's outside of DC .
Posted by: sharon(willow's apprentice) at February 18, 2020 10:38 AM (QzF6i)

Getting the cases out of DC is essential. You can't trust a DC Grand Jury or Jury to be impartial. Only 6% of the town voted for Trump.

Sorry, BB. Lizzy (?) had a very good comment about this. I can't do it
justice but the basic idea was that these people made an idol of their
politics and so everybody else is a heretic who needs to be punished and
destroyed or receive "reeducation"

That's proof of a sort that mankind has a basic need to believe in something outside of himself regardless of what that belief is in. See The Flying Spaghetti Monster and his (its ?) collander-wearing believers as one example.

If we're hardwired to believe, it really should be a good belief. One that contains at least some positive aspects of human nature so we have something to look forward to whilst we examine those negative parts of our own psyches in order to become better people. Sadly, Twatter exposes us to others who apparently have little to no interest in becoming better and revel in rolling around in the effluence of their lesser selves.

This am on Sirius, David Webb had Doug Burns, former US Prosecutor on. Doug gave an excellent, concise explanation of how US Federal prosecutors do their job and included a description of their bias' . He also explained about the current laws regarding sentencing guidelines, dates of when those laws were enacted and reworked, and what he knows as to exactly why and the timeline of the sentencing proposals for Roger Stone.

Unfortunately, Webb doesn't have podcasts available of his current show. I can't find a transcript or even a place to listen to a recording of it.

Burn's said that the way the sentencing guidelines are currently constructed, their emphasis is on punishing people who dared to not plead guilty, but instead, demand a trial and evidence. Should they be found guilty, then the sentencing guidelines actually encourage prosecutors to go after steeper sentences, even though this is unconstitutional. And prosecutors love to show their muscle in showing the defendant they shouldn't have messed with them by pleading not guilty. It's still entirely up to the judge to determine a sentence. There was a lot of detail in what he was saying( he thinks the prosecutors were political hacks in this case, and demonstrated why politics in the DOJ is such a huge problem, one Barr is trying to resolve) as to how reviews of sentencing recommendations from the DOJ are conducted , etc.

Well worth listening to if someone can find a recording of his appearance.

You don't need to be a geek. And Mint includes a whole suite of programs just like Windows does. You get Libre Office, which basically duplicates the MS Office suite, and you can open, modify, or create documents, spreadsheets, and slide shows that are Windows compatible.

It's pretty much like moving from a Ford to Chevy. The knobs and switches may be in different places, but it all works the same, until you get under the hood.

I think that top Democrats, through their agent John Kerry, have been coordinating with Iran even since Trump took office. I think they encouraged Iran to make several minor provocations - shooting down the drone, mining tankers, attacking a refinery - in the belief that Trump would massively overreact and that could be used against him here at home. Wasn't it curious how all of those attacks were designed to be provocative, and yet shed no blood? But they didn't work, Trump didn't take the bait.

And THEN Suleimani decided he could do whatever he damn sure felt like doing, so he orchestrated the attack on the Embassy in Iraq, and then he got Blowed Up. BAM!!! How that must have pissed off Kerry to see his Good Friend and Negotiating Partner splattered that way!

and NOW dems don't know what to do, and neither do the Iranians. And Trump is laughing at them.

466 >>That isn't swaying evidence. Leftists always stay on offense. They acted like *McCain* was a threat for years. And Rinsed Penis. Crying about fake threats generally pushes real threats even further to the back of the queue.

Of course not. You have to look at the totality of what is happening and make your own conclusion. But you can make a strong inference based on what your enemy is doing and what they have been doing since Day 1 is attacking and trying to remove anyone who has threatened their agenda.

Anyone who thinks Barr is a deep state plant is the one being swayed by the media.

467 You think she decided to be nice and reasonable to Rush and Trump just because?

Or she needs to massage egos and be nice to say......get freedom for Assange?

Classic manipulation.

Not authentic.

She's never done this before.

Now she wants something. Something big.

470 I was never really a fan of The Pretenders but the video for the song Don't Get Me Wrong is a homage to the TV show The Avengers with Chrissie in the role of Emma Peel. It's a fun video for fans of that show

471 josephistan #369: I once replaced my brother's weed with catnip. He didn't seem to notice.

If he didn't notice, I'm guessing he wasn't smoking top-shelf primo sticky skunk bud or whatever the keeds are calling it these days.

Did you replace it all at once, or partially, like putting water in Dad's liquor bottles?

Not that I ever did that

473 Jane D'oh: My 12 y.o. LG washer has decided it's worn out. It's working, but on the spin cycle it sounds like a jet on a runway about to take off. Ugh.

Have you checked the flywheel fluid? Usually needs to be changed every ten years or fifty thousand loads.

474 Re: Linux, I had Mint for a while but it degraded over time and their tech support is very spotty. I switched to Ubuntu proper (Mint is based on Ubuntu) and have been very happy. LibreOffice has been a very good Office substitute for me.
