Bauernfeind Wailing Wall.jpg

Lament of the Faithful at the Wailing Wall
Gustav Bauernfeind

Bauernfeind was an Orientalist Jewish artist from Germany. Orientalism is a type of Romanticism that usually focuses on Near Eastern subject matter. Bauernfeind became attracted to the Orient through his travels and eventually moved his family to Jerusalem. There the mature phase of his career began, and he spent the rest of his life there.

The main elements of this work are composition and scale. The framing and cropping of the scene give the work intimacy and quiet. The viewer is taken right up to the foot of this massive, ancient retaining wall. We watch and listen to the faithful approach in reverence and prayer—some on their knees. The viewer’s point-of-view is slightly above and behind these worshippers. We’re not a part of the group and they are too occupied to notice us. Because the artist was Jewish, I think we are supposed to view this as Jews, but for me, a Gentile, I feel almost like a voyeur instead.

The Wall dominates the work. Its stones are massive and ancient. It feels timeless, yet the detailed rendering of the cracks and plants growing from those cracks also give it age. The plants give it life. The centuries have not been kind to this monument yet it stands defiant of that which it has endured. The Wall is closest to the viewer on the right and recedes into the background, transecting all the visual planes. This creates a very shallow stage for the subject matter to act. The closeness of everything is illustrated by the old man in the left foreground. He is very close to the Wall but he looks up to the top. Because he is so close and the Wall is so high, his head bends way back creating a very steep angle. My eye follows his gaze slowly up the façade, taking the details and the massiveness of the structure.

The shape and orientation of the canvas emphasize and exaggerate the proportions of the objects in the work. The tall and narrow canvas confines the figures to this well at the bottom. By having the Wall end at the very left edge of the canvas, it seems to extend beyond the frame, appearing endless, penning us in. The figures are dwarfed by the Wall’s height. At the bottom, each block is individually detailed. Some are cracked, some are inscribed. Variation in shading and color are carefully rendered. As the Wall rises, these details fade and eventually blend together. This adds still more height, in a similar way details fade and meld together as a landscape recedes towards a horizon creating a sense of depth and distance.

For all its massiveness and closeness, Bauernfeind allows for a small area of sky to peak through in the upper left. This cloudless sky creates an opening for my eye to escape this huge emotional weight. Compared to the solid-ness and intricate details of the Wall, the sky is featureless—just a light blue shape in the corner. Where most of the work is sober and solemn, the sky is relaxing and peaceful. When contrasted to the overall color tones of the rest of the work, the sky feels a little out of place, so Bauernfeind repeats the same blue in the garment of one of the faithful in the foreground. It links the two opposing corners and planes.

This work was painted by a Jew at a time when Zionism was taking hold. In this work I feel a sense of longing and mourning, with a bit of hope. It is a longing of a homeland, a place of safety and belonging, the identification with an ancient history. Bauernfeind depicts the central monument of his people who are still scattered and in danger throughout the world. To me, this work is a longing for Home.

58 You ever have something published and then realize you left out something important? I wrote that this work is pretty heavy, emotionally, but it wasn't until right now that I realized that there is a huge weight of history here too. It dwarfs the figures at the bottom, and the viewer, and, I think, the painter, too. It towers over us, hems us in. When I was writing this, that idea was in the background but I couldn't identify what I was feeling. I finally know what it was that was affecting me so.

Anyway, this is an addendum.

83 "Orientalist" has sure meant a lot of different things, and, a lot of them bad.

Old maps (before the Romans) had East at the top, and that's how "getting oriented" came around. Today we would never think of Jerusalem being in the Orient (if you were even allowed to say "orient"), but it means anything to the east of you. Obviously its day to day use has migrated somewhat.

One that gets me is "Middle East" and "Far East." There used to be a definition of the "Near East," North Africa, the Levant, plus Greece and the recent Muslim holdings in Yugoslavia. Except for some food labels, you just never see it any more -- could be because the Near East is in Paris and Edinburgh now?

Aden and Oman were once "quarantine ports," and there is a usage you may just see come back. We are running out of Air Force bases.

One that gets me is "Middle East" and "Far East." There used to be a definition of the "Near East," North Africa, the Levant, plus Greece and the recent Muslim holdings in Yugoslavia. Except for some food labels, you just never see it any more -- could be because the Near East is in Paris and Edinburgh now?"

I recall pondering that some time ago, and realizing that it all makes perfect sense when you take into account the age those terms first came into use - the early Victorian.

All of the directions are based on using the English city of Greenwhich as the starting, "zero" point. Remember, the very first Standard Time done by anyone was "Greenwich Mean Time", that's where the Royal Observatory and Board of Standards and Measures was based.

One of the most impressive things I've ever seen in person is the Great Wall. Saw it the same day I saw the Forbidden City which is also surrounded by an enormous wall.

Maybe walls don't work in America but they sure seem popular in other parts of the world.

112 I thought this was a photo. It only became obvious it was a painting as I got down toward the figures. The detail and lifelike colors used throughout are the first impressions. It was only after the effect of those qualities that the emotional aspects come through.

I feel several layers of reaction. The first is a past glory able to build such an edifice and ancient age in the worn stone. The second is in the worshipful attitude of the people at the bottom of the wall showing a sense of continuity throughout the centuries. Is there longing for the past or veneration because of the age? I'm not sure but I suspect the faithful would focus on the present. It's the outsider who is more likely to wonder about the world of the wall's origin. The third is feeling the weight of the years in the massive quality of the stones.

This is a highly effective work both in the technical talent of the artist and in the questions and various reactions of the viewers.

135 At least we know Trump reads the comments here...

Last week, I wrote a comment saying that I was pissed off at Trump and he's in danger of losing my support, primarily because he hadn't cleaned house of Obama holdovers in the White House.

That shocked him into action.

Unfortunately, now he tweeted out his opposition to 9 year sentences for lying to congress. Here's what he has to do to correct this mistake:

Call a press conference and say that now he's heard the arguments of learned people like Chuck Todd, Jake Tapper, Joe Scarborough and others, he's changed his mind and now thinks that from now on, 9 years should be a minimum sentence.

Let them sentence Stone. Pardon him the same day, along with everyone else caught up in the Russian scam, along with signing an executive order for reparations for every nickel these people have paid out or lost due to the illegal actions of the DOJ and FBI.

Then, have AG Barr announce the arrest of all the co-conspirators of the Russian hoax and that all trials will be moved to South Dakota because the perps are too connected in Washington for a fair trial.

On a personal item, I'm trying to figure out how I would photograph the scene in the painting to create the same effect. It would be a huge challenge to capture it on film. Of course that was always the fun of filming landscapes and still lifes.

Posted by: G. Gnome

The whole history of this is sad.

The Jewish revolt.
The destruction of the Temple by the Romans.
The Diaspora.
Centuries in exile, and suffering at the hands of just about everybody.
The attempt by the Zionists to repopulate what was Judea and Samaria with displaced Jews and others yearning to go home. Wistfully sad. But it did work.

Next year in Jerusalem? The lament of centuries.

I'm not Jewish (at all) and it seems sad to me too.

180 122 Unfortunately, archaeology from Israel is if-y. There is a cottage industry of fake artifacts that has grown within the last 50 years or so that makes scholarship difficult and questionable. It's mostly Christians with money that are fueling it (as a Christian myself, I hate to admit it and it actually hurts our message).
Posted by: Kris at February 12, 2020 09:49 AM (OyyDO)

That's an old, old game. Charles Mackay, in "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds", published in 1841, wrote that if all of the pieces of the "True Cross" were to be brought back together, one could reforest the mountains of Lebanon.

Yes, I've heard that too. It hasn't gotten any better in modern times tho. Now when I see a story about a great find coming from the region, my first thought is to reject it completely. The most recent embarrassment that I can think of was the St. James Ossuary.

Exactly. My dad lived in Philly during the dark days of the 70s race wars. He was entering a subway station and (as he put it), a large, imposing black man approached him and asked if he could spare a dime. My dad said, "All I have in my pocket is my subway fare. If you need it, though, it's yours."

The other man looked at him and said, "Damn, boy. You're worse off than me!" and then walked along.

Markets go up. Markets go down. I tend to not put too much stock (SWIDT?) in what Fraud Street does, particularly given Trump started from a wildly over-inflated base caused by The Fed buying everything that wasn't nailed down during the Reign Of Error.

The general health of the economy seems to be pretty sound and nobody seems to want to think too long about The Debt. So, hey, party like it's 1999 I suppose.

What horse shit. The fact is, a college girl who spends down to $6 in her bank account has no one to blame but herself. As long as she isn't hideously ugly, a college coed can ALWAYS make some cash. And if there's a strip club within 20 miles, she doesn't even need to break the law to do it.

Well, I get out of jail this afternoon (hospital that is). Knee incision stopped draining, so I'm good to go.

They told me the second and third days after the surgery would be the worst, and they were right. The funny thing is what it bothering me is my mid-thigh,and not the knee area proper.

You know why? The put a tourniquet on your thigh to stop blood flow. Now,some leave it on for nearly an hour, but other, such as my doc here, tighten it up only during a critical 10 minute period when they are gluing the implants to the bone. It must be bone dry.

But, for a significant fraction of the population that 10 minutes will do a number on the quadriceps, and I'm in that group.

It's hurting like an SOB now, and 10mg of hillbilly heroin (oxycodone) will barely phase it.

When I was in the rare books business, we were taken in by very good forgeries of papers supposedly from Declaration Signer Francis Hopkinson. It was the usual story, kids found them in their deceased relative's possessions. They were honest, but it turned out - after we produced a nice sale catalog and promoted the sale to all the important buyers - that they were forgeries from the 1930s that the deceased had purchased. It happens to all of us sooner or later.

I've always pictured Vespasian as looking like the younger and tougher Ed Asner. Vespasian had a good sense of humor, including about himself. Attending a play, he watches as a character, made up and costumed like himself, sits up in a coffin and asks, "How much is this funeral costing Rome?"

A character replies, "Fifty thousand sesterces, Sire."

The V. Character: "Make it ten thousand, and throw me in the Tiber."

Vespasian found that very funny.

373 This NaturalFake comment from the am thread cracked me up:

I saw Lizzie Warren a TV a couple of times yesterday with the sound off.

Her body language is exactly that of the (homely?) teenage girl,

who likes you but who you are not interested in,

but you don't want to be mean to her, so you are polite but distant,

but that somehow encourages her,

and her attempts to attract your attention grow more and more exaggerated, including her body language when talking with you to emphasize every single point.

That's Lizzie Warren right now.

The Dems *have* to have a broad on the ticket. Period. She can be on the VP side but she must be there.

And Klobuchar is better than the pinch-faced fake-Indian scold and is pliable to the party unlike Tulsi and is not extremely off-putting like Abrams.

I would lay a small long-odds bet right now that she's on the ticket - especially because she help maintain Minnesota against Trump.

412 Two more short Vespasian stories:

Nero, who fancied himself a singer/actor/poet, had a habit of compelling people to attend his performances. Vespasian was part of the audience at one, and fell asleep. It was a miracle Nero didn't have him crucified. Instead he posted the soldier to some gods-forsaken outpost of the Empire. (I think it was Judea, but I'm not sure.)

And when he was dying, the Emperor struggled to his feet, to die as he thought a soldier should, and muttered, "Dear me, I must be turning into a god." (It was standard Roman practice to deify each emperor after he passed.)

447 The Commissioner's decision to continue on the Human Rights Council's anti-Israeli line is a blemish on the UN Human Rights Council. In the words of the commissioner, it has become a server tool and partner of the boycott movement, even though her statement has no legal significance for the list,"Katz added.

According to the minister, "The Human Rights Council is a body made up of states between them and human rights has no connection whatsoever. Since its inception, the Council has taken no steps to protect human rights, but has only protected some of the world's darkest regimes. The commissioner failed to maintain the respect of the UN and save what is left of the honor of the Council and the Commission. This decision will have implications for our relationship with the Commission. The State of Israel will not accept discriminatory and anti-Israeli policies and we will work in all ways to prevent such decisions from being implemented."

Shai Alon, head of the Beit El Council, responded to the list. "The United Nations published its Jewish selection today, just like in World War II. It is a disgrace, a disgrace to an organization that is all pro-Palestinian on the one hand and silent when it comes to the genocide in Syria and the murder of women in Saudi Arabia and on the other, and damages the delicate fabric of life here in Israel."

Religious hijinx ensue.

He screwed up a perfectly good book with a couple of cheap shots at Trump supporters, and a tone of dismissive contempt for Christians, but overall it was a fun read. For all I know the big-name publishers might require a certain mandatory minimum of that kind of thing to allow a book to be printed these days - it certainly is common enough in anything published the last few years.

If you didn't do grueling therapy, the knee would get stiff as hell. It's not anything wrong with new knee joint proper, the friction surface, bu the muscles, ligaments and shit. The surgery causes great insult to those, and they'd just get stiff and stove up.

It's truly a pain for gain tradeoff there, especially for knees.

Nevergiveup:
The Wall is essentially the main retaining supportive structure for the Temple Mount which the Romans used for their own purposes , thus they had to retain the wall

Cicero:
Besides, it would have taken months to remove that wall. I don't think the Romans would have wanted to expend the manpower.

Someguy:
The Romans allegedly took the time to destroy the rest of the walls and city, leaving this wall as proof they conquered something formidable.

585 24 the Wailing Wall or Western Wall is part of the foundation of the temple mount. Access to the Wall is controlled by the Israelis. Lots of police and metal detectors. Access to the Temple Mount is controlled by muslim people, also lots of police and metal detectors. Today on the Mount you will find the Al Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock. The temple mount is the third most holy place in Islam after Mecca and Medina. The western foundation of the temple mount is the most holy place of Judaism. About 1500 feet west of the Wall is the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the most holy place for Christians and controlled by the eastern orthodox church. Given the proximity I find it striking how few political disturbances there are - there are lots of police.

Posted by: Richard at February 12, 2020 02:22 PM (huaUe)

586 541, the Temple Mount is not controlled by Israel, Jews are lot allowed to pray there and are only rarely allows to go there at all. On the other hand the Western Wall, the western foundation of the Temple Mount, is completely controlled by Israel.
