I used to work conventions at the Javits center back in the day, you want to get in to set up, well that's a door charge.
It's not a charge charged by the venue, it's a charge you have to pay the union goon to open the door for you if you want to get inside without risking a beat down on the way out.

Meh, what are they supposed to do? The USPS is required by law to deliver all addressed mail if it bears the proper postage. They did exactly what their job is. The screw-up was entirely on the part of the mailing company. Do we really want the Post Office to start trying to divine the intent of people sending mail?

People keep insisting that Trump is thin-skinned, impulsive, a seat-of-the-pants sort. His business was developing properties, many in large urban areas. To do that he had to have planned out, very carefully, what would need to be done every step of the way from property acquisition, financing, zoning, plans, builders, materials, etc. and to have gamed out options in case one part fell through or another.
I am not surprised that had material already to go to attack any GOPe that needed a good attacking; he comes from a background where the contingency plan has a contingency plan.

The modern conservative radio host was only a speck on the horizon, until the 90's, when Rush took off nationally. Talkers were usually on on Sunday nights, not M-F. Maybe Paul Harvey was still around, doing "The Rest of the Story" 2 minutes a day. Barry Farber. Not much more.
He has been defining what a quality talk show is now for 30+ years.
He has dozens, no, make that hundreds of talk show hosts, discussing national, regional, and local issues openly and freely, unlike the 6:00 news heads owned by Progda.
I hope a Rush baby right now is working on a solution to Rush's illness, and somehow gets Rush on it. That's my dream.
But yeah, there is only one Rush Limbaugh. God let us all borrow him for a while, hope it continues for many more years, and I for one am grateful God did.

Yes. Many, years ago supervised invoicing for a utility, and we did small sample runs, identified how many/who was billed over a certain threshold amount, etc. with *every* billing cycle, every month to catch things like this. I would think someone(s) lost their job over that preventable f#ck-up.

Stuck in an airport, starving, with limited time before my flight, I entered a bar-with-food. Receiving my drink, I picked up the menu and discovered to my horror that I was in a vegetarian restaurant, with no time to find alternatives. After rejecting almost all of the menu, including a Caesar salad made with baby kale (what? vegetarians can't eat Romaine?), I picked a plate of hummus and pickled veggies.
Mrs Splunge said I stank for two days after eating that. Never again.

I read about this ... but "any time" is still some fraction of 100,000 years ... I'm hoping that it already happened and we will see the result in less than a decade.
There *have* been some anomalous gravitational waves observed from the correct direction so I'm still hopeful. Also the gamma etc won't be sufficiently intense to kill anyone.

It looked like a sapphire wedding band to me. Why was that a gracious gesture? Because Rush and Kathryn were seated to her left. So when Rush turned his back to her to allow her to bestow the medal, her left hand would've been facing the camera and a big diamond would've shot flashes and sparks--making it about her, not Rush.

He needs prayers too because Mark (the Dad, my brother-in-law) has stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He found my sister when he came home from chemo. As bad as this sounds, our faith as a family is strong. Well if I remember my stellar mechanics (calling on my geek side here), when stars collapse they go only so far until the heat and gravity allows them to start burning another element and they get a reprieve, but only if it was a big ass star to start with. A smaller star like our sun may convert hydrogen to helium and poof.. done. A larger one can go farther, like after helium it can go to carbon/oxygen and then onto neon/magnesium and then a few more steps until it hits iron. I don't remember how big betelgeuse was to start with. It might be out of reprieves. If thats the case its on it's final collapse.

Amusingly, a dispute over this is going to bankrupt the Portland branch of the Longshore Union, and may bankrupt the whole national Longshore Union.
Two Electricians Union people were employed at the Port of Portland's container terminal, who basically just plugged and unplugged refrigerated containers. Got paid huge salaries, of course.
The Longshoreman's Union decided that they wanted these two jobs, and started illegal walkouts and slowdowns, and illegally harassed anyone trying to use the container terminal. It got so bad that no shipping company would use the container terminal (companies shipped into Tacoma and Seattle, and trucked the containers down to Portland).
Well, the company managing the port just got a huge judgement against the union local and national union, which are appealing the verdict, whining that they will go bankrupt if the judgement is enforced.
Over two jobs.
Couldn't happen to a nicer union.

It showed much higher numbers than what have been released from the virus outbreak. They got a screen shot that was abruptly taken down showing nearly 75,000 cases confirmed with almost 25,000 fatalities.
Also, 269 cured. and 155,000 suspected cases.
I have zero knowledge about how reliable these numbers are so take them as unsubstantiated and possibly total bull.

I live in Queens. We have a serious crime uptick thanks to our new and glorious state 'no bail' law. Property crimes are through the roof, including daylight home invasions where women are raped or killed, tortured for ban account PIN numbers. Then you have the sanctuary state/city problems on top of that. Then there's the recent pantyfa proto riots demanding free subway rides, no police in the subway, etc. The police are handicapped by elected leadership. The place is turning into the shithole it was back in the late 70's-eary 80's.
Diversity is our strength, except when it comes to politics.
I say this in all seriousness: Don't come here. There are much nicer places in this country, and more welcoming, where you can spend your tourist dollars while not looking over your shoulder all the time.

I worked for the state as a supervisor of people in three different unions, and I was required several times a month to be at work at 7:00 am to "supervise."
I often entered a totally dark building and had to sit in a dark office and wait until a union worker came in and flipped on the light switches.

As someone who lived in NYC during a period when there were thousands of murders a year, NY is really the safest big city in the world.
The biggest problem is that it is now ridiculously crowded, ridiculously expensive and its increasingly hard to get anywhere you want to go expeditiously.
If you are going to stay, pay the extra money to be as centrally located to wherever it is you want to go and take Ubers everywhere.
You will be alright.

Me as well. Not for me though. My son is trying to make it as a D1 pitcher. We both know that our height puts him at a disadvantage. But give him 6 inches, and just a tad bit longer fingers, he could work Pedro Martinez/Mariano type magic with the ball.

Angie was back in the hospital this week and got out today. She had had her gall bladder out, but the bile ducts were clogged. She had surgery on that yesterday.
We are very hopeful that everything is going to be all right now.

On an related note, last weekend, I escaped from the hellhole that is NoVA and was in rural SoVA. Took ConorDog out to do a walk at 10 PM. I was so used to the light pollution that I was overwhelmed by the true beauty of the night sky, darn if there were not stars/constellations EVERYWHERE I looked!

The Astros used technology to steal signs. Cheating, yes, but not a "capital" baseball offense. The managers involved have been canned, as have the front office personnel, but the players are most likely protected by the union. Even if they're not, cheating has always been punished less severely than gambling.

Now I know the context, it was a bit weird. But who are we to judge really with so little information. They probably could have learned more about the animal in other ways. But, we don't really know the context. Maybe the kids used painting as a way to communicate or express themselves. You could still do it. So many from NOVA has ensconced to friendlier climes. I have seen fancier restaurants, cafes, and stores in the Valley and way outside DC than they have in NOVA. Almost all of these places were started by former beltway bandits who had enough.
Eastern VA is an entirely different thing for sure. They have a different culture and even a different accent.
A good trivial question I used to ask people was what is the largest city in Virginia. The answer is Virginia Beach. It was the right answer way back when so I am not sure if that is still the case. But few would make that guess unless they knew the state well.

One thing I have learned over the years. Repubs are foolish for courting popular rock bands from the 70s and 80s. How many Repubs have been embarrassed by Springsteen? I believe Bon Jovi is another one. Now you have Mellancamp and even the chick that voices Lisa Simpson.

the ethnicity thing doesn't bother me really. I remember a Shakespeare movie years ago with Denzel Washington as the lead. It wasn't a great film but he was likely the best actor in it. What gets me is that they are getting rid of great literature pell-mell.
I made a point of buying online the very early editions of the Norton Anthologies of Literature from the early 80s at least. At least then you have some great literature, including diverse voices that mattered. But I can't imagine what the new versions have in them and what they discarded.

Called Dad tonight. Today would have been their 65th anniversary. He actually forgot. Mom died In 2014 and he used to come down every year on their anniversary and visit her grave.
I uthink that's a good sign that he's maybe moved on, or else maybe a bad sign that he's got some senility going on.
Dad will be 84 this year. And his mother lived to be 1 month short of 104. So I may not have to deal with this for a while, by then I'll probably be senile.

dementia has real attributes that when you see them up close, you will never mistake them. They probably have some stuff online for those who have not faced it. A lot of people think someone is going senile when it could be just forgetfulness or a senior moment. But true dementia/Alzheimer's is unmistakable at least once it has advanced. I only say this so that you might not have to worry. Do some checking. I don't know what info is out there but I bet someone has done a legit video to explain it.

Did you read about a judge in Nassau County, I believe it was, who placed bail on a bank robber? His lawyers appealed the bail and won, so the guy was released with an ankle monitor. Within a day or two, the guy cut off his ankle monitor and skipped out. When the judge who set bail was questioned about the events, he gave a standard 'No Comment' with a shit eating grin on his face, letting everyone know he thought the no bail law was stupid in the extreme.

I went there my second time maybe a year or two before that. We were at the end of a military training and decided to stop in the Bronx to see a Yankee game. The neighborhood was not as nice as the Manhattan I visited in the early 80s, but the game was good. Those New Yorkers could yell the entire game with the most creative insults. But they never used a curse word. That is what stood out to me.
And in the early 80s, the subways were covered with graffiti; but again, very few curse words. I wonder if it is still like that.

Another common tactic, I'm not sure it's conscious or not, but they hop around a lot, changing the subject in rapid fire staccato, it is very important to keep someone on the subject at hand.
Of course one eventually realizes that they aren't interested in facts, logic, or reason, and aren't going to change their mind. Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. And as a fact of the matter - there's really only two ways you can get someone to do something. Either persuade them. Or force them.

The only thing that saved me, was it wasn't my first ride. I grew up on briggs and stratton mini-bikes, and enduro motorcycles and generally being a normal yoot with a scoot.
So I knew enough to stay out of trouble. The thing still was way too heavy and handled like a barge. I got rid of it after deciding the insurance was a little too spendy for something taking up space in the garage. The real problem is other drivers. It isn't safe out there anymore. Probably never was, but it is insane. I'm not persuaded there is any driver training nor any driver testing anymore, not as we understood the terms.
They just give a license to anybody that can fog a mirror these days.

that was my experience as well. I used to love to debate them. I had lefty girl friends that I flipped or at least helped along their way. I also had lefty teachers that were fun to go back and forth with. I feel sorry for people in school today, I really do.
Maybe a teacher or prof held it against me but I refused to be a victim and really never saw that. Today I guess they have no choice. I mean, they could rebel but it is not in them to rebel in that way.
When I hear a lefty go off as is so common these days, the only play is to leave the situation. You can not fix crazy life is too short. There is a reason many are leaving their traditional homelands to be among people with similar values. Life is too short and the crazy has no redeeming value at all.

Not if you're paying attention, and halfway sane. Maybe if I lived in rural Nevada on hwy 50 or something like that, where there was little traffic.
People even purposefully run motorcycles off the road or cause collisions or whatever. I've seen it. and experienced it. I came pretty close to beating someone within an inch of their life. I don't need that kind of thing. I'd prefer to stay out of jail. Killing stupid drivers has a lot to be said for it, but we're not their yet as a society I don't believe.

*The Shenandoah River runs South to North like the Nile or whatever the other one is. So going South is up the Valley and going North is down the Valley.

The problem is they are best known for their biscuits. If the corporate head at Red Lobster, don't see the issue, I can't help them.
It is the opposite of Mcdonalds being best known for their fries. Everyone loves their fries, even famous chefs. Not one says they have great burgers but they will always get a burger when they go there. The fries are a hook that guarantees people buy their burgers.
With Red Lobster, a very expensive restaurant, the last thing you want to be known for is a biscuit. And selling them outside the restaurant makes no sense at all from a business perspective.
People can disagree on their seafood. I personally don't think that much of it. I have found the lobster to often be overcooked and the rest just standard,farmed stuff you can get at Safeway. The vegetable sides are uniformly terrible and show the cook is not even trying. Ok, not so much the cook but the chef who plans these meals. I would bet TGIF has better sides than Red Lobster.
If you compare the fotrunes of Red Lobster to Mcdonald's over the years, there really is no comparison. Seafood, particularly shellfish is often a low margin business as the product is expensive even at wholesale. But what has Red Lobster done in the last 30 years to invigorate the brand? If they didn't have those great commercials, they would be sunk.
jmo, the advice was free and likely not worth much more than that.

Looking back now, we realize hydrogenated polyunsaturated vegetable oils are actually the worst for your body and it's most trendy (and accurate) for dietary plans to recommend saturated fats.
When you think about it, it should have been a no brainer to realize that your body was going to be able to process and use natural occurring animal fats versus factory generated, chemically modified fats.

they got woke and paid a price. From my understanding, they did use a beef tallow that gave their fries a special flavor. Someone freaked out that even the potatoes were not vegan and the switched it up. I am not saying they are the same, but even today they use an artificial beef flavor in the oil to try to replicate it. My drop dead day was when they stopped making the fried pies. The baked pies suck and I bet they don't sell a tenth of the pies they used to.

The clean bathrooms are a plus, they are a trademark of the brand. Yeah, they gave up on fried pies nationally I think back in the early 90s. It is has been a long time and a lot of people are pissed even to this day. It makes no sense, they gained nothing from it and lost so much. The nature of our jobs changed quite a bit to.
My grandfather ate bacon/sausage, eggs, biscuits, grits with butter and coffee for breakfast.
Then he crawled into a coal mine and beat rocks out the side of tunnel all day for twelve hours, pausing only for a sammich halfway through the day. Then he ate a big dinner full of fats and high glycemic carbs. Skinny as a rail.
Try those eating habits when sitting in an office cubicle all day staring at a computer screen and you'll find your body composition ends up quite a it different.

The definition of 'rich' has always been fluid with the Democrats. Extra taxes after the first million, check that, after the first two hundred and fifty K, check that, after the first one hundred thousand. One hundred may have been rich man's wages years ago but now that's a middle class salary in many parts of the country.
Have a friend who has a house on Staten Island. They keep talking about raising property and income taxes to pay for the free shit given to the illegals/do nothings. My friend complains all the time about it but I keep telling her that, according to the Democrats in charge of this state, she owns a house so she's rich and can pay it. She gets angry with me every time I tell her that because she knows it's the truth.

I've been to a Red Lobster exactly one time. I guess I was spoiled growing up on the Gulf Coast. We had fresh seafood all the time. We caught it ourselves or someone always brought over some of their catch.

Weather-wise fine. Got out of there before the non-existent snowmageddon hit.
Healthwise, Wound Dr said things progressing nicely and not to come back for 3 months.
Oncologist still worried about certain levels and can't figure out what's going on. Platelets dropped significantly. Changed her meds. Put her back on diuretics 'coz swelling is returning and her BP is up. Going for lab work Friday locally and they will fax results to oncologist.

I think I know what you are saying there Rick. It is not a $15 an hour job for newbies. It is mean to be a first job for teens or someone new to the country. But I believe a recent Mcdonalds CEO rose up from a fry cook. It might not be the present guy but it was a recent guy. Those jobs are great to start or get a fresh start. But yeah, minimum wage to start is not evil, it is the way to get a foot in an move up.

I guarantee it was a lie. And if nothing else, it was out of context. What if people leaked Tom Landry's or Vince Lombardi's speeches? To be honest with you, and I realize it is your dad, but in general, people are going to believe what they choose to believe at this point. Most people don't even consider the other side these days.
