So, last week Kobe Bryant, along with his daughter, and seven other people died in a helicopter crash in California. I've never been an NBA fan, but even I know that Kobe is as close as we've come to the GOAT, Michael Jordan. Of course, this being 2020, before the fires were even out at the crash site, some WaPo shrew was tweeting (and being roundly roasted) that we shouldn't forget that Kobe was accused of rape, but stories about Kobe's generous side were also being reported. Here is one of those stories:

The economics of all-you-can-eat buffets There was a sushi restaurant around here that used to have a lunch buffet that I would destroy a couple of times a year (and yes, the chefs were making the sushi fresh right at the buffet), I think I got my money's worth there. I've also heard tell of a lobster buffet somewhere in New England that I would dearly love to make a run at sometime, but outside of that, buffets are not usually known for their quality food. I will admit that I had to meet a client at a Golden Corral a few months ago and the food was much better than expected.

One man turned nursing home design on its head when he created this stunning facility. This actually looks like a pretty neat idea. It might be too expensive to be widely adopted, but he might be onto something here.

Captain Josepha, my niece (a senior in h.s. Catholic girls school) has won a pre-med scholarship to Creighton university with an 85k grant. Unfortunately she seems to want to stay in the Pacific northwest close to her mom and dad and my folks and may go to UW.
Which I think (strictly among us) is nuts, especially since her GG was an m.d. from Creighton and old Omaha packing business. I bet she'd do better there than Seattle.

Sorry not buying it. It's a worthy goal but when I look at the history of other serious non-nuerological diseases I don't see it. During my time with the paterfamilias, I researched Alzheimer's extensively. I saw no evidence of any measurable progress in identifying the cause let alone anything resembling a cure. Awareness and care practices have taken giant steps but that's it.

Watching the Nicolas Cage "Color out of Space" and so far it's pretty good.
I wrote a rant about my personal situation, but decided it didn't need to be posted, as it was about people and things not affiliated with the Horde, and as the Horde is the only family I have left, it'd be, like, "This ain't in the clan, son, why're we hearin' of it?"
And if I'm gonna whore out things, I figure my latest animation is the thing I should be whoring. But I won't post that until the Movie Thread.

Puzzling to me, too. The "vitrified brain matter" looks like it might be akin to a hydrocarbon known as "pyrobitumen", which is a black, shiny solid. Speculation: the poor guy was cooked so hot that all the moisture in his brain turned to steam, and blew his skull apart, but by then he was so deeply buried in pyroclastics that the shards didn't go far. Then the remainder of his brain, was heated so hot that most of the volatiles gassed off, leaving a tarry hydrocarbon residue.
The rest of his body, being more massive, retained enough moisture for decay to set in once the heat of the eruption subsided.

Okay. So I was supposed to show up at work today in the Seal Beach office. (I normally work in the Garden Grove office.)
I decided that after all the shit? I didn't feel like it. I wanna continue to enjoy my (forced) vacation and not start up 'til next week.
So I went ahead and texted my boss, asking if I could come back Monday instead of today. He agreed, but added "you need to work a full eight hours to *catch up*."
This stuck in my craw a little. Catch up? You mean like ALL THE OTHER TIMES my co-worker (who caused this whole mess with my job) didn't do her job, so I had to do it?????
The more I thought about it, the more it bugged me. So I texted my boss, quote:
"Hi [name redacted]. I'm texting because I'm a little confused. Why is there work to catch up on? How much is there? I've provided [bad co-worker] with training on both inputting and affidavits/invoices. She should be able to keep up with this work herself."
My boss' response:
"Steve, I'm not going to go into that. It's overall a 2 person job and having to adjust with just one person can cause things to slow down."
I'd had it. I responded, also via text:
"Okay [boss name]. I understand. Just FYI, whenever I've had to work in the office alone, you've NEVER accepted any excuse from me about how heavy the workload is."
"Therefore, I resign again. You obviously don't have respect for me."
Then all hell broke loose. My boss immediately texted me back giving me the rundown I originally requested. I didn't respond to that, instead I just texted:
"I will be at the office Sunday at noon to pick up my things. See you then."
Suddenly per my boss, I find out everything is caught up (because he's suddenly furiously typing it all up himself now, no doubt) and he's saying he does respect me. Sigh, whatever.
Then we played phone tag for a while because he made it clear he wanted to speak with me directly.
Long story short, I quit and got my job back a SECOND TIME IN TWO DAYS. LOL.
We'll see what happens next, on Monday. I'm gonna keep my mouth shut in the meantime.

Old horse drawn artillery had the gun attached to a two wheeled cart, the caisson, that held the ammunition. The caisson was what the horse or mule team was fastened too.

Okay. So I was supposed to show up at work today in the Seal Beach office. (I normally work in the Garden Grove office.)
I decided that after all the shit? I didn't feel like it. I wanna continue to enjoy my (forced) vacation and not start up 'til next week.
So I went ahead and texted my boss, asking if I could come back Monday instead of today. He agreed, but added "you need to work a full eight hours to *catch up*."
This stuck in my craw a little. Catch up? You mean like ALL THE OTHER TIMES my co-worker (who caused this whole mess with my job) didn't do her job, so I had to do it?????
The more I thought about it, the more it bugged me. So I texted my boss, quote:
"Hi [name redacted]. I'm texting because I'm a little confused. Why is there work to catch up on? How much is there? I've provided [bad co-worker] with training on both inputting and affidavits/invoices. She should be able to keep up with this work herself."
My boss' response:
"Steve, I'm not going to go into that. It's overall a 2 person job and having to adjust with just one person can cause things to slow down."
I'd had it. I responded, also via text:
"Okay [boss name]. I understand. Just FYI, whenever I've had to work in the office alone, you've NEVER accepted any excuse from me about how heavy the workload is."
"Therefore, I resign again. You obviously don't have respect for me."
Then all hell broke loose. My boss immediately texted me back giving me the rundown I originally requested. I didn't respond to that, instead I just texted:
"I will be at the office Sunday at noon to pick up my things. See you then."
Suddenly per my boss, I find out everything is caught up (because he's suddenly furiously typing it all up himself now, no doubt) and he's saying he does respect me. Sigh, whatever.
Then we played phone tag for a while because he made it clear he wanted to speak with me directly.
Long story short, I quit and got my job back a SECOND TIME IN TWO DAYS. LOL.
We'll see what happens next, on Monday. I'm gonna keep my mouth shut in the meantime.

Hey, good standing up for yourself and showing the confidence you deserve.
You should know though, that my mentor said that when something such as that happens where an employee threatens to quit ot gives you an ultimatum because they got a better offer you should fire them then and there or when it is convenient for you. Someone that tries to coerce you has to go.
Not suggesting it is going to happen for sure but be aware.

The chancellor of CCSF sent a letter about the financial issues in November, which said, in part:
"This situation is not an emergency but part of a long-planned restructuring of the academic program to prioritize the graduation of students of color."
Because whether white students graduate from CCSF or not is a matter of indifference to the college's administration.
Are people like this chancellor aware that they are working for Trump's reelection campaign?

Yep. Remember reading about the caissons used when building the Brooklyn Bridge. Also described how some workers got Caisson's Disease, a/k/a the bends, though nobody was quite sure why. As stated above, they didn't realize humans could fizz and pop like a shaken bottle of soda.
But I did not know the story of the Missouri bridge builder/military engineer giving us caissons for construction. I did always wonder how 'caissons' came to be used when I was reading about the building of the Brooklyn Bridge. Talk about news you can use.

It was a solid lock that this impeachment was going nowhere - the Democrats needed a unified caucus and twenty GOP defectors and that was never going to happen with the lame charges the House came up with.

People do not become Senate Majority Leader because they do not know how to get 50+ drama queens in a row. And anyone who thinks you can just order those people around is someone that is sniffing paint thinner fumes off of a hobo's ass. There are just a hundred of them, they are prouder than Satan, and when it comes to their perks and privileges they are touchier than a French actress. Dems are afraid of their constituents. Literally AFRAID. Many of their constituents are psychotic, violent and dangerous.

Grew up in Doylestown from fifth grade to college, college at Penn State, had an LDR with a girl from high school who lived in Pottstown five to ten years ago. That should be Pennsylvania cred.

on day 9 got pneumonia
on day 11 they gave him a nrw (still experimental I think) antiviral called remdesivir via IV
he starredrto get better in a day but they say they don't know if it was the drug or he was just gonna get better

My cousin the airline captain went to Penn State for aerospace engineering and flight school. He was very pleased with the program and was able to step right into a job with the airlines after graduation. But I don't know whether it's gone SJW since he was there.

There is a pretty good art museum at Toledo, Ohio. They had a joint exhibit project planned with a major NYC museum, and had crated up several large masterpieces for transport. The trailer was stolen at Breezewood, The City of Motels.
It was serious, but after a few days of what must have been some damned interesting phone calls to international art fences, they dropped the trailer off. IIRC, no questions were asked. Famous paintings are hard to re-sell.

Cokie was 75. I was looking her up along with the rest of the Boggs family. It seems a lot of them die relatively young.
She had a sister who died of cancer at just 51. Her brother, Tommy (Thomas Hale, Jr.) died of a heart attack at 73.
Her mother made it to 97, though.

I would love to do that one day. Tour the country on a motorcycle. No plans, just go. The only problem is I hate rain. I can't stand riding in the rain. I hate the rain with the heat of 1000 suns. Yeah well, the big problem is my bikes were always bar hopper types. Form over function. lol. No windshields, or saddle bags, or big comfy seats, etc. If I had a tour bike I might be less resistant, but it would never get ridden in normal life. The other bikes would win out. I have 2 softails, one regular, one springer. Nice for reasonable rides, but not this multi state shit. lol

It's also not hard to distinguish between French Canadian and frog French.

You know, I see a glimmer of a business opportunity here: "Rain Rescue Bike Transport". Riders pay a hundred bucks to join, and then a small monthly fee to keep membership in good standing. You're on the road, your trip gets rained out, you call an 800 number, and Rain Rescue sends a truck with an enclosed trailer to haul you and your bike home, warm and dry, or on to dry roads beyond the storm. At a very competitive per-mile rate. The company owns no trailers, nor has drivers on salary. Run it like Uber; they are all contractors. Bike riders, the users, call in at the outset of their trip with a general itinerary: "five of us are doing the Blue Ridge Parkway this weekend". Company keeps a tally of users out on the road, watches the weather forecasts, and alerts contractors to stand by if it looks like there may be a flurry of calls. Of course it would all be on-line, and GPS-supported, and made as an app. too.

Same with Spanish. In South America, in some countries one word is innocuous but in another country that same word is an insult/vulgar.
Living where I do, in hysteric Jackson Heights (part of AOC's district), I can hear the different accents, though I couldn't tell you from which country they originate. 'Cept Mexican. That sounds 'sloppy' or 'muddy'.

Sturgis ruined me. I hit 4 seasons of weather in 2 days in that area. One day it was hail, and later that night a dense fog and heavy mist, and some mini fucking twister we must have been near. It hit us head on while screaming down the highway, and pushed us from 70mph down to 30mph in an instant. Some smaller chick on a sportster got blown off the road into a ditch. The next day it was 90 degrees out, and when we left deadwood at night it was 38 degrees. After 10 years of that shit happening, in august no less, I started thinking about how day after day of that shit would start to piss me off if I ever headed out for a grand tour.

my grandmother, who was born in Milwaukee, didn't speak anything besides plattdeutsch (low german) til she was 9 years old. Interestingly, plattdeutsch is closer to yiddish than it is to High German.

High German, Hochdeutsch, is official German. It's what's spoken by newscasters like Middle Atlantic American.
Low German is Plattdeutsch, and it's one of dozens of regional dialects. The dialects are massively more different from each other than American regional accents, even more so than between American regional accents and British regional accents.

Fishin' report...
Left home at 5 this morning. Lost in thought, missed the exit to my brother's house & drove 10 miles before realizing it... Left Bay Area a little after 6, arrived at Pyramid Lake before noon.
Geared up, started fishing. Started with a two-fly indicator rig. Which is basically bobber fishing. You know, redneck Trump voter fishing. Very Philistinic to us refined fly anglers. So I ditched the
Flogged the water till dusk. Nada. Will try again tomorrow. Possibly hit the Truckee River in the afternoon; word has it the fishing's pretty good, with even some off-season dry fly action going on.
On the plus side, weather was pleasant. Low 60s, light breezes. Water was toe-and-nut-numbing, tho. Beautiful scenery. Strange volcanic rock formations.
Staying at the "lodge" on the lake. Our room is a fifth-wheel trailer, hundred bucks a night. Actually not too bad; clean, has all the necessary accommodations. I've paid more for worse hotel rooms.
Will report back tomorrow, hopefully with some fish tales...

Your niece is very fortunate to get that scholarship from Creighton. It is a top notch teaching institution. (Just don't go into labor the 1st of October when all the new interns, residents, and nursing students are just starting out. Any modesty I might still have harbored before I went into the hospital was totally gone by the time #1son was born.)
Omaha also has the Nebraska Medical Center, the University of Nebraska's medical school. The Med Center is very aggressive in research, and very rich people donate millions to keep the place expanding and improving.
I suspect there is less chance of your niece getting sucked up into radical leftist politics here, although there have been a couple incidents down at UNL in Lincoln. Creighton isn't so big in football, but it is crazy about basketball.

My father's parents, who were originally from what is now the Czech Republic spoke both Czech and German. Since our last name sounds more Germanic than Czech, I thought that they might be Sudeten Deutsche even though my dad did not have a high opinion of the Germans. My dad said no, they were born in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire and German was very commonly spoken by even non-Germans. It helped them get by in Wisconsin while they were still struggling to learn English.

As far as I know, Trump is removing it from policies, charters, mission statements, which means plenty for those responsible for implementation -- as long as they're not rogue agents. Problem is, most of the voting public has been so dumbed down by miseducation that it's doubtful they could be persuaded. But polls usually show that "climate change" ranks pretty darned low on the list of priorities of the average voter, too. Jobs and cost of living rank way higher.
Climate catastrophism is a fad, and eventually, it will run its course. But push back too hard, and the True Believers will dig in, and may become violent. Pay it a little lip service, but don't actually do anything drastic, and the great masses will be satisfied. The True Believers won't but they will be unable to get traction with the great masses.

The one thing I've come to understand is that everybody in South America hates the uppity Argentinians. Even their pronunciation is different. For example, 'llame', or call me, is usually pronounced 'yaw-may'. But not the Argentines. They pronounce the 'll' like a 'zh', so it comes out 'zhah-may'.

Get away with *what*? How have Trump's election chances improved over the Ukraine's failure to announce an investigation into Biden? I mean, what the fuck? What the fuck is going on in that thing you call a "head", Chuck?
It's simple. Their rejection has to be consequential (it is not), because the world is a horrible place if they don't get what they want. You can see it in the reaction of the "press" to the vote. America is over, Democracy is done--and Trump might go on to have the same null effect again!
Because it is a "quid pro quo" that Trump would withhold--and yet *release* funds within the deadline, he had to expect the announcement *months* before the first primary. And to make the case that it's "interference in election" it has to be against Trump's "most likely opponent".
However, they need things out of the story. They need both things. They need it to be within that time period, months before any primary, and yet a delayed interference in next November's election.
But the announcement would either have a significant effect on the support of Biden or it wouldn't. If it did, it could eliminate him from the primary. Bernie Sanders isn't going to lose because the Ukrainians announced an investigation into Hunter Biden. If it didn't, we we've moved to a position that the phone call didn't result in an effect because they didn't announce it, to a point where there is little effect because they did.
Hillary Clinton won the nomination and campaigned for winning the so-called "popular vote" while being investigated by the FIB for violating over 100 national security laws. The Director of the FIB publicly announced that she did it all--but she didn't *mean* to do it. She destroyed evidence under subpoena, and to this day, pointing all this out is some character defect of conservatives. And her opponent was "tired of hearing about [her] damn emails!"
So it's questionable how far an *announcement* of an *investigation* would have taken Trump.
Plus if it's such a slam-dunk case that President's shouldn't enlist foreign countries in "cheating in an election", isn't that something you should be able to convince the people of? And if you can't convince the voters of that, and the voters re-elect the "tyrant" it's not really the tyranny that keeps him in place, but the vote of the people. Not the Democrat's preferred outcome, but harldy the Death of Democracy or a Constitution.
Which is why the fabrication of the fevered fantasy that Trump will not leave. Well if that's the case, it would only come to light if he lost. And the case that he lost, suggests that his "cheating" wasn't that effective and not an indication of tyranny--because that failed strategy is peanuts to a President that can *effectively* refuse to leave.
He's not a tyrant if the Senate's vote is the difference. He's also not a tyrant if winning the election by cheating is the difference. He's also not a tyrant if losing an eleciton is the difference. And whatever tyrant intentions he has, if he does not succeed in effectively resisting the will of the people, the country would be free of a would-be tyrant. The only thing that would result in the Death of America is if Trump *effectively* resisted being unelected.
And if President Trump had that much loyalty, I doubt we'd see him constantly under fire in Washington. Constantly under investigation, constantly under fire, constantly in processes the self-contradicting press convinces themselves is the "end to his Presidency".
Because Democrats about about counterfactual wish fulfillment fantasies that have no tissue of reality. Where Trump is so doomed, impeached, removed, prosecuted, on the run, but if the world turns poopy, he's an unremovable tyrant that spells the Death of America.

However, this is a higher stake than simply a iffy call with Ukraine, and to suggest that the Republicans will refuse to remove no matter how Trump escalates his "tyranny" is to avoid the exact premise of the Republicans that *this* charge is not impeachable and *this* case is not well made.
But a good part of their party is mentally ill, and no matter how reasonable a case you make only a potentially reasonable remnant will be able to see it.
The rest of them will never see that Dershowitz did not say that anything a President does could be legal. Just that if an act isn't in itself illegal (and it wasn't) "corrupt motives" is unnecessary psychoanalyzing over which we should not impeach a President.
