Mitch McConnell: I Think I've Got the Votes
Is this THREE AND A HALF YEAR NEWS CYCLE FINALLY OVER?
After more than 90 questions and 8 hours of debate on Wednesday, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated to Republican senators he believes he now has the votes to defeat any Democratic motion that the Senate consider new witnesses when the Senate decides that question on Friday, according to two GOP sources. That would allow him to skip to the final stages of the trial, the sources said.Um, no ABC, that wouldn't be "skipping the final stages of the trial," as if these stages are set out in writing. It would end the trial. The questions would have been "the final stages of the trial." They just cannot write even a single sentence straight.
ABC News' Trish Turner caught up with McConnell as he arrived at the Capitol Thursday morning. Asked if he has the votes he needs to win the day Friday on witnesses, he responded, "We'll see what tomorrow brings." Then, when asked if he felt confident about the vote, he turned his head and with a sly grin and said, "I always do."The media is attacking Dershowitz today (even as it gives "tongue baths" to Adam Schiff). Why are they attacking him? Because he was effective.
And maybe fireworks coming later, and a rebuke of John Roberts. As you probably know, John Roberts censored a Rand Paul question about alleged fake whistleblower/former Biden aide Eric Ciaramella yesterday. What you might not know is that Roberts originally refused to ask any of the question. But GOP Senators told him that if he did that, they would call for a vote and overrule him:

Sources say Roberts was told an attempt to censor any questions about the whistleblower in general would be rebuked by recorded Senate vote, at which point Roberts retreated and communicated that he would instead censor any mention of the whistleblower's name.

Rand Paul may not understand (or care) about this, as every politician in there wants to turn this into a bigger dog and pony show, but for them. This is part of the reason why McConnell also limited press access and so on.
The next time around they won't do this, I suspect -- and in any case there isn't much to be won (in reality) by dragging the Bidens and the dim leakers across the dirt. Any such action that can't reliably be a prelude to their immediate firing from whatever position they hold and/or revocation of any kind of restricted access can be considered strategically barren.
People down here want to see their people fighting for them, because they feel like no one is. But on the upper level, it's a total clown show and sometimes fighting more is just going to make it worse.
We can grant that the whole impeachment is a partisan effort, but even so, it followed the rules. By ending the impeachment by playing by the rules, it doesn't open up holes in the defense that don't need to be there. The lesson from Nixon is that breaking the rules a little to win doesn't work until you actually make the rules. Republicans don't. Yet.

Presidents do big things like negotiate trade deals, broker peace in the ME, tax cuts, tackle employment --- they don't worry about the feelings of child representative of one demographic to determine nationwide policy.

Afaik, they gave Roberts the responsibility to oversee the questioning. Doesn't that assign him the prerogative to censor? I'm not saying I agree with his choices, but to say that the Senate shouldn't let him do this is sort of a tautology - they are already letting him do this.

I'm pretty sure that he's the one that has refused since Scialla died to hear anymore 2a suits so as to clarify how far the 2a can be regulated.
