Bolton Announces New Book and Advertising Campaign to Take Place During Impeachment Trial;
Susan Collins Says She'll Vote for Witnesses

The New York Times claims that Bolton's book will say that Trump said he wanted to hold up aid to Ukraine until Ukraine opened an investigation into the Biden's.

This leak comes just as Bolton's publisher announces the book.

Gee, I wonder who's behind this leak.

This has the intended effect of getting the Eternal Turncoats to turn coat.

Many people are asking if John Bolton has been playing games just to give his freshly-announced book a big advertising boost:

42 That point about time taken is well stated. It takes a long time to get a book out. Writing can be pretty fast, depending on the writer and circumstances (I can belt out one in a month if I'm healthy and rolling). But publishing takes longer. Trump did not dodge the draft, Trump is not a warmonger, in fact he's about as opposite a warmonger as you can get.

Here is a quick little excerpt from Bolton's memoir, "Failure is Not An Option"..

Bolton: I had no desire to die in an east Asian rice paddy for a lost cause.

Oh yeah Mr. Fucking Tough guy John Bolton, tell that to the men you sent to die in Falujah and Anbar province with ROE's that pretty much guaranteed that many of them would be coming home in body bags.

If Trump were responsible for Gulf War II the ME would be glass.

Fuck you Bolton.

It's like I tell people, when you cry for Justice make sure you're crying to someone for it - there is no 'arc of history that bends itself towards Justice' - if history bends, its being bent by someone. In the absence of kings people seem more apt to believe that things just magically right themselves, like the return of spring. Once evil people realize that they aren't just magically going to be punished by nature (or something) for doing evil, they really go at it.

The Last Judgment, however....

194 Frankly, I am not jumping on the book promotion angle although it is a reasonable inference.
1. Is the leak what Bolton wrote? Given the sourcing, is the media reporting what Bolton wrote? And did he actually write it? We know the sworn to uphold the Constitution to a secret FISA court FBI lawyer changed the description 180 degrees on Carter Page. These assholes in the publishing industry and deep state Vindman types will make up anything and the media assholes will breathlessly report it.
2. If Bolton wrote it, the Stache, once a person worthy of high respect, is now dead to me. He is in the Colin Powell/Mitt Romney category of pissy, bitchy traitorous fools.

Historically incorrect. The Ruling class will win as long as it is competent.

An incompetent ruling class will eventually be overthrown by the people, once they have weakened the society enough.

Once read an interesting paper on the French Revolution. It postulated the dueling was one of the reasons it succeeded. It seems the almost 30% of the French Aristocrats had killed each other in duels over the prior 150 years.

And it killed the bravest, best, and most honorable, leaving the dregs to those existing positions of power.

Now, look at our Congress, and the stupidity of some of those elected.

234 The Bidens "taking the fifth" won't really help them all that much.

Republican questions, read aloud by Roberts, could be devastating in their sharpness, scope of accusation, condemnation by inquiry, all on their own.

When met by the Bidens' response of "I will assert my right to remain silent under the fifth amendment" after such questions, it'll be tantamount to confession.

So, I want their corruptocrat asses up there at the witnesses' table, pleading the fifth, for some tens of hours at a stretch.

And let the questions fly.

235 It might be uncharacteristic optimism on my part, but this kind of thing boosts both Bolton and Trump immeasurably. Bolton obviously gets better sales, and Trump gets to push neoconnery further away from political relevance on both sides of the aisle.

Either way, it really is on the Republican Party to drag in witnesses. They don't have to make a deal with the Democrats: just drag in Hunter Biden and let the dominoes start falling. Given how the President has handled every challenge up to now, I doubt rumors from a book are going to hurt him worse than three years of extensive investigation.

279 One thing I noticed recently. Local news person (young, eager, clueless) reporting on a local rally in support of Trump reported that the president had been charged with "obstruction of justice".

I tend to think that the Democrats choosing the made-up charge of 'obstruction of Congress' was not accidental.

From Murder She Wrote to Law & Order and every police show in between, the popular culture frequently uses the phrase "obstruction of justice" to the point that it has permeated the vernacular. Obstruction of justice is always thrown in as an added charge.

Ask anyone you meet to complete the phrase "Obstruction of _______". What do you think will be the most common answer?

So then, as designed, obstruction of Congress (not an actual crime) now becomes conflated in many people's minds with obstruction of justice (an actual crime)

The idea is to create the perception that Trump isn't on the up and up, and you don't need facts or evidence to plant a doubt in the public mind.

And, it was, until the Cooper's history w some anti-gay slur was outed and "someone" in the WH said no. Cooper gave us Rosenstein and the McCain shit at OSC that went after Tea Party ppl. Thanks, Jeff.

354 Hell yes, I want witnesses...

The case against Trump is convoluted, complicated and nonsense. Witnesses won't help the democrat's case. However, the Joe and Hunter Biden situation is open and blatant corruption, understood by everyone over the age of 12.

Fuck yes. Bring those witnesses on.

He can't.

If he speaks publicly on this, then Executive privilege before Congress goes out the window.

Which may be the ploy.

They are trying to get the President to wave Executive privilege to stop the firestorm of coverage and allow Bolton to speak.

Which would mean Schiff could call him before the HOUSE again, now with a legal argument to get him to testify.

Yeah, the Dems don't take a sh!t without a plan. They want "relevant" documents and witnesses for reasons beyond proving/disproving the claims made in the current two Articles of Impeachment. IMHO.

I'll defend him a little longer. There are two problems with firing all of them, and neither of those problems are related to whether they deserve it (they do).
1) He has been under investigation since day 0. Mueller. Crossfire Hurricane. Impeachment. Firing someone is suddenly obstruction. It's bullshit, of course, but mass firings of everyone who deserves it would tie him even more than he is now. Mueller came as a result of him firing one such deserving son of a bitch.
2) He can't get his own people in. The Senate never recesses and so he can't do recess appointments and most of his picks won't get confirmed. McConnell is great at ramming through judges but is happy to slow-walk political appointments. Now, it might be that it would be better to have vacancies but then it is just more swamp rats at a lower level who do the wrong things.

I am inclined to cut him a bit more slack on this particular topic. He hasn't been great on personnel in general to be sure, but he is also constrained like no prior president I know of.

438 And another thing...

I'll give him a little more time to get some prosecutions going, but not that much more.

There have been too many blatant, on the record, out there for everyone to see crimes that no one is paying the price for. Homey don't play that and neither do I.

It's time for people to go to jail for a long time instead of being promoted.

Yes, they keep Senate investigations of the deep state from going anywhere, but here's the thing. At that point, Donald Trump will openly excoriate the "secret Democrats" in the Senate and wonder why the hell they exist at all. That many defectors will make actual Republicans go along with it. And Susan Collins has, despite all the press releases, been relatively reliable as a Senate vote. McConnell won't tolerate her going too far over the line.

Posted by: trev006 at January 27, 2020 01:01 PM (OIinY)

442 First, Bolton is kind of scumbag for taking advantage of this situation to pump up his book, though how do you live in Washington for that long without that level of scumbaggery not rubbing off on you, so seems kinda to be expected.

My bigger guess, Bolton is trolling the Dems to see if they'll take the bait by putting this in his book. Since when would it be a criminal offense if one of your advisers thought you privately felt a certain way about something? He could make these kind of statements about his opinion of the position of the President without actually giving them anything that is evidence that crime was committed, unless know we've reach the peak stupidity of thinking we can impeach a President for "wrong thought crimes".

Yep.

I'm not buying all this "Executive Priv" shit. Bolton wrote a book, for crying out loud. He's not motivated by keeping secrets.

Nonetheless - either Bolton gets up there and lies, which will get him caught, and we get to watch in real time a former Bush loyalist, neocon, and party establishment ally commit political suicide from the comfort of our own living rooms. That's what I call winning. Lets do this.

Or - Bolton tells the truth, and Trumps lawyers get to shove this shit show down Nadler and Schiffs throats, again, as well as throw in a little scold for the Weak Sisters Collins and Murk for voting for it in the first place. Also - winning. Trump was wrong. I don't get tired of winning. I could win all day, every day, and that shit would still never get old.

Lets do this.

Bolton left the White House on terrible terms and was not always seen as a reliable narrator by colleagues. The he said/he said of him versus Trump on tying the aid to investigations is testing that in a pronounced way.
