We have manufacturing, generating electricity and other power for our homes, generating electricity for all of our other buildings, non vacation-transportation, automobiles, the energy it takes to produce our food, all of our electronic devices including tv's. Agree. There are a lot of really bad buffets out there. But there are also really nice ones, and I love the variety. Chinese buffets, Indian, Mediterranean, American, I've been to good, enjoyable buffets in all of them. And bad in all of them, too, except Mediterranean.

Texted with a physician friend of mine in Seattle today about coronavirus.
It is already having local effects - Pike Place Market in Seattle, which is usually bustling at lunchtime, had very few people there today (he sent me a picture). Seattle has had one case of coronavirus, thus far (a guy who flew back from Wuhan).
Germany, Japan, and Taiwan all reported coronavirus cases today in people who had not been to China.
The problem with coronavirus is that you can be asymptomatic for a couple of weeks, so screening people for fever at airports isn't a very useful mechanism for identifying coronavirus cases. With SARS, on the other hand, you were only contagious if you ran a fever, so temperature screening worked very well.
Interesting times...

I noticed this 15 years ago with a lot of women at work, women saying they wanted to "experience life", as if drinking margaritas in Cozumel was "experiencing life".

I once asked what her legacy would be, would the cabana boy from Playa del Carmen be handling her end of life care and funeral arrangements or would it be her brother's kids. I asked her if she would look back wistfully on her Facebook pictures in her declining years, would she always be self-centered narcissist. She drank a 750 of Jim Beam, got obliterated and smacked the shit of me.
Needless to say, we broke up shortly after. She used to text me about 5 or 6 times a year to see "What are you doing?". I eventually blocked her phone number.

Well, aside from Pilate and his guards, that last was not controversial in old Judea, everyone hated the Romans. Some just were more scared that too much trouble would lead to an accounting, that actually did happen in 70 AD and finally under Hadrian. Shows how things change that the radical Christ was more indifferent to the Romans and pacifist, and the Jews were the insurgents that eventually called down the whirlwind on their head and lost their homeland entirely.

My mom told me I was deathly allergic to beets. Probably had a bad reaction or something when I was a baby and that freaked her out. So I never had a beet. Ever. And because of that, as you might expect the whole idea of the beet kind of got built up in my mind. I had no idea what they tasted like but assumed they were probably pretty awesome. Bright red, they probably tasted like a mix of cheery and strawberry. I lasted until my forties when one day I thought one tiny little bite isn't going to kill me.
1) No allergy reaction. 2) They taste exactly like dirt in your mouth. There's a lesson there somewhere. Like always listen to your mom.

Was planning a hog hunting trip week after next. Went to the range to work on my shot group and realized that my blood thinner meds from my stint have said "no". Even with the 150 grain .308 rounds from my ar-10.
I. Is. Unhappy. Massive bruise on my shoulder, even using a bath towel folded 3" thick between the stock and my shoulder.
Was treed by these vermin as a wee lad in Louisiana's Natchitoches Parish and have a love/hate relationship with them. I hate the fvcking parasites and love killing them. Right next to coyotes and feral dogs.
Gives me even more reason to exercise, lower the BP, and get off the meds. My long gun is good, but it ain't .22 mag brain shot at 250m on a moving target at night good. That shot group is still at a 8" CEP and likely to improve without serious commitment.

True, but can you find redemption when you have spent a lifetime choking away your honor and your faith? Is repenting on your deathbed truly repenting, or hoping one more time a lie will get you what you want?
Can you put aside a lifetime of habits at the last moment? Took me near forever to stop chewing my nails, for example. God will lead you to salvation, but it is your own actions and faith that will take you over the threshold. He can only do so much for you.
Better to start practicing living that just life now, practicing your grip, your stance and your faith, instead of depending on that one last, hurried grab at greased rungs from a position of fear and pain. It is not something you want to hesitate and miss, after all.

Ultramarine has more red in it and is not as clean looking blue as cobalt when thinned with lead white. It makes a better purple and is cheaper than cobalt in oil paint these days. Cobalt also makes a nice cerulean blue with a little viridian and cadmium yellow light.

As a kid the smell og blue cheese nauseated me. Now it's my go-to salad dressing, buffalo wings, and veggie dipper.
I also hated butter as a kid. The palate changes.

I was sortof that way. Almost all of my brothers and sisters would stir their entire plate of potatoes, gravy and what not into a mess that we called mix-a-way.
It was horrible and I never did it.
Another clue that I am not very sensitive to peer pressure. I was also the only sib not to suck on a finger, thumb, or have a blanket.

I like beets too, although I didn't when we were kids because mom served the canned ones. When I actually dared to eat fresh beets on a salad when I was an adult, I was pleasantly surprised.

Hard pass. Not religious nor am I anti-religion (except for pisslam) like so many non-religious assholes. Very good! I mentioned on a thread last week that the best Brussel sprouts I've made were in the Instant Pot.
Saute Brussels sprouts and sliced onion in butter for a few minutes then add a half of cup honey, a tbsp of sriracha sauce, some salt and a little flour and cook it on high pressure for 2 minutes. It might sound weird but it's absolutely delicious - sweet and spicy. My sister and I devoured the whole batch in one sitting.

I encountered "stir fried green beans" late in life at a red neck* Chinese buffet, and have been a fan ever since, although I now have a better recipe of my own!
The only Chinese restaurant I have ever been to that did not have a chopstick in view (not sure you could ever ask for them and get them) and with both mac and cheese and fried potatoes in the buffet.

This one time, I was at a super high-end steakhouse in Buenos Aires. I was with two other men (wife was in the hospital there, long story), and I wasn't paying. They order the 'parillo mixto', a mixed grill that came on one of those round heaters with a flame in the middle like you see in some Thai/Polynesian restaurants. I didn't recognize anything. So I told them, don't tell me what I'm eating until I ask. So I grab a piece of meat and try it. It was horrible. I asked them what it was. Cow's lung. Never want that again. So I tried another piece of meat. Started eating it and couldn't stop. Between mouthfuls, I asked what it was. Cow's stomach. Found out I love cow's stomach.
I guess the point is our minds have preconceived notions of what we like or don't like and our taste buds react to that. But if one doesn't know what one is eating, the taste buds are on their own and will dictate whether we like it or not.

I encountered "stir fried green beans" late in life at a red neck* Chinese buffet, and have been a fan ever since, although I now have a better recipe of my own!
The only Chinese restaurant I have ever been to that did not have a chopstick in view (not sure you could ever ask for them and get them) and with both mac and cheese and fried potatoes in the buffet.

I like to get russet potatoes, slice them in half the long way, scoop out most of the inside potato part, place the hollowed out mostly-skins on a cookie sheet, drizzle olive oil all over, sprinkle coarse salt and cracked pepper on them, and bake about 45 minutes at 375.
A hundred times better than potato chips.
And pretty cheap, too.

Eventually a more senior officer came along, said WTF, told him to go back to the rear and report to his squadron. He was back in the air before the surrender.

I do also, and based on the track record it will; probably not fast enough to suit some people, however that is also what the history shows. What little *I* know is that the Christian church, in whatever form, is remarkably resilient and enduring like the ocean; and that it rises and falls like the tides, and as much as it is pushed back that is what* makes it stronger.
*The paradox is that Christianity thrives under persecution and wanes under patronage. In the 1960's-1970's-1980's the state churches of western Europe were fading (for example) as the Catholic Church in Poland was waxing.

This guy said he'd done a book on his war experiences. I urged him and his caretaker to look into the Library of Congress Veterans' History Project, as I do with everyone like that (have done quite a few interviews for it myself).
Another guy who happened to be there then hung around and we talked quite a while, his later FIL was a B-17 pilot. He has all his papers, talked with him extensively about his experiences when he was still around. His son even did some interviews. He's definitely going to get things organized to create a file for the FIL with the LOC project.

Nobody said I or anyone was just fine with what is going on in the Catholic Church. However, after 500 years of Protestants changing things about the Catholic Church, somehow we still haven't reached Nirvana, or whatever the goal of all of that change was. It isn't the Church that needs to change, it is the sin that must be rooted out.
People will still be people, nothing on earth will be perfect, and that is caused by sin. Period. Making changes to that which Jesus founded upon Peter isn't going to eradicate sin, whether it be of me or you or the Pope or some homopredator priest. And here's the news: there is just as much sin outside the Church (some would say more) as inside the Church. Protest whatever problems you think the Church has, and be as Protestant as you like, but don't tell me that you have the answer and that the Church should change. Pretty sure you've been there and done that.
Now, about you being a "fan" of the Church. You aren't, so stop trolling and try a little introspection of your own. And if you really find some sin, well, come on in and try confession. It's good for the soul.

Listen smart girl, I went to a Catholic university. I have Catholic priests staying in my house for weeks at a time. I have attended more Catholic services in the most recent 20 years than Protestant service.
The most recent Catholic Church I attended had me as a lector and had me as part of their new member recruitment team, and they knew I was Protestant with no intention of becoming Catholic. They had me assisting because the knew I had sincere affection for the Catholic Church. That and they could not get any Catholics to do anything other than take communion and go right back out the door.
Why don't you yank your head out of your ass and quit going after someone that wants the Church to work through its issues by attacking others?
Even better, what are you doing to fix your Church besides suggesting that it is just going through a bit of a rough time as it does for a century here and there and it is going to work itself out?

It kills me I was too dumb to ask my uncles and dad what they did. I'm living in the house of my uncle who was in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked and the battle of Saipan. All of the men that were my neighbors were in WW2. Guy next door was in the Philippines as an early flamethrower, BAR guy. Was on the volunteer fire department his whole working life. Love to hear the stories. You're good with words. Like to hear it when you can. Thanks.

Back in my younger days, I took some night classes at Illinois Institute of Technology, located on the south side of downtown Chicago. And right next to the campus was Robert Taylor Homes, now all torn down. Uh huh.
The off campus McDs had no inside seating or tables, plus an armed guard at the door. Next to them was a KFC, and the kitchen/counter was completely walled off with bulletproof glass. You got your order thru a sliding drawer.
So the Brit experience ain't exactly new.

First, sorry if I'm presumptuous in bringing up suicide. Sometimes people speak in code, because let's face it: no one likes to talk of such things, or to burden others with such dark subjects, so we dance around the edges, not wanting to address the demon staring us in our faces. I recently lost my son to suicide, so I say: "Fuck that".
Here's the thing: you have people in your life who love you, care about you, and respect you. Losing you will devastate them. Average Son had the Average Family, who naturally loved him. You may not have family that you are close to, but there are others in your life connected to you in ways that you don't know.
You don't know it because depression (or whatever) has blinded you. You only see failure and disappointment. You can't imagine how anyone would really care about you. Even if you think people do care about you, you think you're a burden to them, and of no value.
Average Son had relationships that I never would have guessed the depth of, but which I've learned of since his passing. And it's not just people speaking well of the dead. While he wasn't the easiest friend to have, because of his depression and anxiety, he was nevertheless deeply valued by them. But his illness would not let him see himself the way they saw him. He was, in his mind, a mere burden to them (and us), and they (and we) were better off without him. He saw himself as worthless, so how could anyone else see otherwise?
Well, he was wrong. But I couldn't convince him, so I don't know how much value my words now are. And perhaps (OK, certainly) I'm over-simplifying. But the fact remains: there are people who care about you. Don't be afraid to reach out to them, and to accept any support they can offer.
And, God cares for you too, as do His people. Of course, His people are human people, and each and every one of them is at times an asshole. But among His people you are more likely to find those who are selfless, and who are genuinely concerned for your welfare, than among the population at large.
Sorry if I'm a bit long-winded, and a bit rambling. Contemplating whether I should even hit the "Post" button...

Yes, there were many issues. External economic and politics related to the collapse of the western part of the Roman empire being significant, and simply the diverging cultures of the communities they served. The theological stuff would have been (and was) resolved.

Oldest son is 26, as is his longtime lady. We expect them to marry someday. She's a lovely girl. However, she once opined that she's reluctant to bring a child into this world because of ... global warming.

My two sons are the only male descendants in the family's fourth generation to bear the family name, a name of which I am overly proud. I hope my boys will carry it on. It's an uncommon surname anyway, and I would hate for it to become even more rare.
Perhaps that will change. I just hope to be around if it does; I didn't become a father until I was 32. In contrast, Dad and I are 25 years apart. I didn't realize until recently how big that seven-year gap is.

Reactionary populism.
One of the authors is Ro Khanna, the US Congressman who succeeded Mike Honda.
Honda did his homework about Khanna, included much of it in his campaign flyers, and defeated Khanna the first time (Honda lost the second time).
The example of Khanna's unfitness for office that stuck with me was Khanna's performance on a Board of Directors (of his HOA, IIRC). Khanna got elected, showed up a few times, then ... The board had to replace him.
In short, Khanna's career seems to have been a series of successful "upward failures".
I think little of Khanna's policies and motivations have to do with Hinduism (maybe Khanna is a good & observant Hindu, maybe not), as the Mahabharata speaks against "ambition" frequently (Yudhisthira is praised for being without ambition and it gets him into heaven), and Khanna is clearly ambitious.
Khanna is more of an Idea Man, but one that does not have to deliver on his ideas; if they fail, not his fault or problem, and not his money.
I get the sense from the article that Khanna is cueing-up a few of the failed policies that India had under Indira Gandhi; a reign of stagnation, failure and Hillary-esque scolding.

I suppose you have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'm working on the restoration of liturgy, rather than letting some Protestant decide what constitutes Catholic worship. Unlike your apparently schismatic adventure in small-c catholicism, I'm prayerfully and financially supporting several priestly societies who are developing the Latin worship according tot he 1962 Missal, rather than the watered-down protestant "Mass" in English, ad populum, ad nauseum. I teach catechism to kids and adults, I knit baby clothes for the local pro-life pro-woman organizations, I pray the rosary daily for the intentions of Holy Church, the horde and others, and the list goes on.
So, Skippy, since you feel the need to step into small-c catholic worship and claim you know all about what will fix the Catholic Church, what else have YOU done except antagonize faithful Catholics by telling us how wrong we are? Smart guy.

I think the war turtle set the rules to require that a simple majority (51) would need to vote to subpoena witnesses. That strategy seems pretty sketchy, given the proclivity of people like Mittens, Murkowski and Collins to back stab PDTS.
And that BS excuse about being fair and hearing all the pertinent information is just BS. The house sure as hell didn't want to do that and they've withheld exculpatory testimony, and even lied in front of the Senate during this whole affair.
The fact that the GOP is even discussing bargaining for witnesses tells you all you need to know.
