Gun Thread: Space Force!! [Weasel]

space force pic scaled.jpg

Let's hear it for the gol' danged SPACE FORCE!! I don't know about you all, but that's a spiffy logo right there! And apparantly it made the liberal retards cry so it's even better. Thank you President Trump! I wonder what sort of cool death ray guns the SF will eventually have... anyone care to hazard a guess?

Let's find out what else has been happening in the world of guns this week, shall we?

If you're tired of listening to me blather on about Virginia, you can skip ahead to the other exciting content below, but before you do consider this; Virginia represents an all out assault by the left on all of our gun rights. Lefties everywhere are watching Virginia and taking notes. What happens here, may soon be coming to you.

Virginia
The bigly huge and beautiful 2nd Amendment VCDL Lobby Day was held in Richmond on Monday, and was by all reports a great success. I was not there in person, but based on reports from those who were, and from what I saw streamed live, it was an entirely peaceful rally with an outstanding turnout by 2nd Amendment supporters. There appeared to be a few small groups of counter-protesters, for example one anti-Trump group numbering about a dozen, who were mostly ignored by the more than 20,000 there supporting gun rights. People were there from across the country, and may God Bless each and every one of them. The exact number in attendance is diffucult to know as they were spread out in the streets across many city blocks, but suffice it to say there was a huge turnout. Antifa goons and the pinch-faced scolds of the Moms Against Everything cult stayed home, and as a result there was no trouble, as many had feared.

Were you there? Care to share your experience?

Unfortunately, Governor Dipshit must not have peeked out the window and thereby failed to note what was happening in his front yard. A number of anti-gun bills continue to move along in the Senate, and here is a summary of where legislation stands as of January 23rd courtesy of the VCDL.

Not to be outdone by the Senate, this week the leftist idiots in the House of Delegates have lurched into motion, working on their own list of infringements to your Constitutionally protected rights. Here is an update of where House legislation stands , at the end of the week courtesy of VSSA.

It's too early to tell if the rally will ultimately have a legislative impact, given the continued movement of leftist bills noted above. However, Lobby Day wasn't ever going to be the end of anything, but rather only the beginning. It's very important for citizens to continue applying pressure on local governments in support of the grassroots 2nd Amendment Sanctuary movement. The morale boosting turnout at Lobby Day, and the fact it did not devolve into a riot, gives our side a certain amount of momentum and it's important to keep that alive. The jackasses running Virginia for the time being may not act like it now, but the grassroots solidarity of the people has their attention. Stay tuned.

Moving Along
An often overlooked but very important aspect of shooting is the trigger pull technique. Here's a short article from the CMP (h/t redc1c4) which everyone should take a minute to read, and the basics apply to both handgun and rifle shooting alike. I cannot tell you how many students I've coached who yank or slap the trigger, and once it's become a habit it's difficult to unlearn. The correct technique isn't complicated; simply use the pad of your finger to exert slow and steady pressure straight back until the gun fires. Depending on your setup, you can pre-tension the trigger slightly once you become accostomed to the break point. I am not a fan of super-light trigger weights on rifles, and have my competition guns all set to the same 1.5 pounds. Handguns obviously have much heavier triggers, and you should spend some time during each range session s l o w i n g d o w n while concentrating on not being spastic on the trigger.

******

New Colt Python
I own a number of Colt revolvers, but I do not own a Python. Yet. The classic Python is an amazing example of craftsmanship, but the guys in the video below make the argument the new Colt Python is better due to advances in metallurgy and machining techniques. The video was made at SHOT Show and is almost 20 minutes long, but worth every minute of your time.

The new Colt Python lists for $1,499 which is a chunk of change, but I'm pretty sure I need one.

Link-O-Rama

Taking advantage of my own great advice, I bought two cans of 7.62x51mm M2 Ball ammo from SG Ammo. It's surplus from the 1980's made by PMC, and looks just fine. I have no doubt it'll shoot fine, too. I will take the chrono to the farm soon and let you know how it performs.

I'm really very seriously not kidding around anymore. Buy Ammo

Here's a video from the geniuses at Black Rifle Coffee Company. These guys have a great sense of humor, and know their way around a coffee bean, too!

That's it for this week - have you been to the range?

50 I mentioned in the book thread this morning "THE COMPLETE ENGLISH WING SHOT" ,a review of hunting, shooting, guns, dogs, etc from 1907. I thought these recommendations for different game were interesting considering the time frame:

Rooks.-.250; some prefer .297/.230, a similar one.
Rabbits.-.250 or .300
Red Deer, Scotch. - .256 Mannlicher
Chamois. - Nothing less than .360
African Antelopes.-.360
Indian Deer, Ibex, Tibet Wild Sheep.-.256 Mannlicher, Mauser .275
Lions and Tigers.-.360 to .450 h.v. express; the new .375/.303 has proved successful at Tigers with the capped bullet.
Eastern Elephants.- .577 h.v. rifle, 100 grs. cordite and 750 grs. solid and capped bullet.
Eastern Buffalo.-.360, .400, and .450 h.v. express.
African Buffalo.-.450 h.v. express and .577 h.v. express.

Yes.

It was a typically Trumpian compromise - the AF gets to retain nominal ownership of the enterprise while space ops get their own Chief of Staff and domain.

This also made the other services happy because it eliminated an additional service secretary. Also, less red tape.

55 I bought guns and ammo.

My lower receiver arrived for my AR pistol. The guy who gave me the upper didn't need his 5.56 ammo since he gave me the upper so I scored 120 rounds for $30. Better than retail.

I reported from the VCDL rally.

It was big. It was polite.

At first I thought also spitting into the wind. Anti gun bills continue apace in the General Assembly. The assault firearms ban had already died in Senate committee. There was hinkiness in the process so I think it is just mostly dead. The assault firearms registration bill is moving along though.

Also there is a bill punishing gun owners for not reporting lost or stolen guns within 5 days. I think they may be worried about the widespread canoe incidents.

But I think that what is really happening is they are going to declare victory over the NRA with the bills and not much will change.

As in other states there will be a lot of non-compliance. And a lot of undocumented firearms and magazines.

People will get charged on incidentAl charges when they get arrested for something else and have an unregistered assault firearm. Some people will end up getting prosecuted. Some lefty legislator will get caught in violation and will get away with it.

But I don't think the status quo changes much.

64 I have been to the range the past two weekends. Been going to the indoor one by me due to it is much closer to me than the outdoor one (by about an hour) and the weather up here in the NorthEast has been quite squirrely. Hey, I like my comforts!!
So my drill has been start at 7 yards and put through 50 rounds. Two to center mass, one to head. I then move out to 10 yards and repeat with another 50 rounds. Then I finish up at 15 yards same drill.
I have worked on my grip and stance but one thing that really helped is that I slowed down. 3 or 4 visits ago I blew through 160 rounds in under a half hour. Now I am taking my time and I am noticing a BIG difference.

A local store had some pretty good Black Friday prices so .45 and 9mm levels are good, but I seriously need 5.56 in mass quantities.

82 Gub news....

Sold the Mauser C96 "Broomhandle" but the Luger is still available. Lots of people watching it, and opening bid is only 1099.99. It will likely go to the person who pulls the trigger and makes a bid.

It's been reblued, new grips and still has some storage gunk lurking within but the serial numbers match and its from 1921, which is cool.

So if anyone accuses you of being a Nazi for having one, you can huff at them and say it's a Weimar Republic arm, thank you very much!

I simply can't justify the money tied up in it, hence the sale.

Reading that West VA has a clause in their constitution that allows counties from VA to leave VA and join West VA. At least 86 of VA's 95 counties have declared themselves "2A Sanctuaries".

Oh man, I hope this ramps up quick. In time for the 2020 census. VA would go from 13 to about 4 electoral votes, and West VA up from 5 to about 14 or so.

Nothing less than the destruction of the state of Virginia will be adequate for these gun-grabbers. Give it to them. Right up where it don't shine.

84 I need to shoot a box o' fifty rounds from that new Colt Python.

Given modern tolerances and vastly superior machining consistency, I'm hoping it'll be of superior accuracy.

However, the factory grip shape on a Python is about as horribly non-ergonomic as was made in the Classic Era.

Back in the day, there were literally hundreds of aftermarket options. Today? Not so much, I think.

I wonder, if the marketplace will drive aftermarket grip makers to bring back some of the classic offerings? Even remakes of "out of business" manufacturers.

87 Weasel, I for one thank you for your VA coverage, for as you rightly pointed out, it could be coming right here to TX. (It's not the people from Cali I fear, or others: its the urbanization of TX and the people there, whether they arrived yesterday or can trace their TX lineage clear back to Stephen F. Austin, beginning to farm out THEIR responsibilities to government, as tends to happen in all big cities...but I digress.)

I am critical of the cops but I will absolutely give them their props where they are due. I was skeptical of what they would do: do they pick their paymasters or the people? All the accounts I read tell me the cops picked the people, and understood - rightly - that the people they dealt with for crowd control were for the most part low threat and simply there for political protest. I appreciate the cops doing that, and understanding that for the most part they were dealing with the people that would give them the LEAST trouble of all.

In fact I think about 99% of those out there need huge props in showing what "the right of the people to peacebly assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances" looks like.

Now, as the VA government has made it clear they don't remotely care about basic rights, it's time to do this: NO violence by any means, BUT do take some time to watch some of the rowdiest clips of the UK Parliament's Prime Minister's Questions, and make your town halls and such look like that. (Well, I'm sorry, but when government wants to infringe upon your rights, showing your displeasure with your elected officials is likewise your right. And if they don't like it? Cordially invite them to resign.)

101 Any MP5 fans out there? As you probably know, H&K released a semiautomatic version of their iconic MP5 a few months ago. Their SP5 is a faithful copy of the original, but being H&K, their asking $2,800 apiece for the privilege of owning one. And given the very limited supply thus far, you'd be lucky to acquire a SP5 for under three grand. Enter Palmetto State Armory (PSA). A long awaited PSA MP5 clone should finally be released to the public this Spring. And the price is expected to come in around $1,300. I think I'll hold onto my money for a few more months and check out this PSA offering before spending $3K on the "real thing".

Shipping for ammo...

I found a deal I like from Carolina Munitions for 1000 rounds of .223. $250, fine ready to pay it. Shipping is $52 by UPS.

Just to check, I went to Lowest Ammo for the same order, price $251. Shipping is $67.

Is this typical? Is UPS increasing the price due to it being ammunition?

With an extra 20% being applied for shipping, is buying online the best option?

116 This week was Browning Hi Power week. I shot one each in .40 S&W and one in 9mm.

Both were reliable and accurate out to 40 feet, but the .40 S&W was very snappy in the recoil and a tad hard to rack. The sights and safety are much better than on the 9mm version with the three square system and the safety being a tad larger than the 9mm which helped in feeling it and flipping it. Magazine only had 11 rounds as compared to the 9mm's 13 rounds which is why it was named the "Hi Power" back in the day.

The 9mm version was much more pleasant to shoot and seemed to be the right round for this pistol. Easy to handle and shoot, the 9mm version just plain felt better all around. As it was designed to be.

On an ammo note, if you have any old warhorses like me check out Steinel Ammunition for rifle and pistol ammo.

Air Force in-flight box lunches are definitely Numbah Ten.

They have crack teams that scour the world's Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants for their rejects. These are transported to Davis-Monthan AFB to 'age' (outdoors, uncovered) for a minimum of 3 years. Only then are they seasoned with the AF's secret blend of JP4 and other POL, and only then are they allowed to enter the 'food chain'.

172 115 Finally a real and serious question.

Posted by: Dave in Fla at January 26, 2020 07:30 PM (PHotS)

Ground shipping rates are based upon distance.

Ammo is heavy. The difference adds up quick.

And the delivery from UPS is sometimes a bonding thing. They know it is ammo, and most will give a smile when you say, "oh, those ball bearings are here!"

174 This week was Browning Hi Power week. I shot one each in .40 SW and one in 9mm.

Both were reliable and accurate out to 40 feet, but the .40 SW
was very snappy in the recoil and a tad hard to rack. The sights and
safety are much better than on the 9mm version with the three square
system and the safety being a tad larger than the 9mm which helped in
feeling it and flipping it. Magazine only had 11 rounds as compared to
the 9mm's 13 rounds which is why it was named the "Hi Power" back in the
day.

The 9mm version was much more pleasant to shoot and seemed to be the
right round for this pistol. Easy to handle and shoot, the 9mm version
just plain felt better all around. As it was designed to be.

On an ammo note, if you have any old warhorses like me check out Steinel Ammunition for rifle and pistol ammo.

188 JJ Abrams did the remake for the Star Trek movie entirely for the cynical purpose of directing a Star Wars movie. But in truth Andrew Stanton's John Carter of Mars, regardless of whether it was good or not, would have been a better sine qua non.

I've said that Lucas and JJ Abrams are opposite sides of a coin that insure that the franchise doesn't expand and mature. Lucas and JJ are both lazy, but JJ is a master of BSing his audience. Genndy Tartakovsky would have been a good choice, and in truth it should have been given to an animator to direct.

I'm watching the climax of John Carter, and the shape shifter ... get this ... shifts shape in way that advances the goal of that character in a clever way. Suck a death-stick Lucas.

Posted by: Weasel at January 26, 2020 07:50 PM (MVjcR)

201 Okay, found 'em. Lyman Products is now making the Pachymer Grips.

Here is the Gripper Pro. It's on a Colt Python, so "yay". https://tinyurl.com/qpcptru

In my opinion, this is one of the finest revolver grips ever made. Though the advertising blurb says it's 10% smaller than the regular Gripper model, it's actually an entirely different grip.

The Gripper has a much more "round" profile in the finger grooves, and the backstrap is covered by the grip. A lot of the recoil gets focused into the narrowness of those finger grooves.

The Gripper PRO leaves the backstrap exposed. And all of the major revolver makers have a pretty good profile on the backstrap side of things. So, no problems there in my opinionated world.

Further, the Gripper Pro has finger grooves that lie much flatter across the horizontal plane. This greatly increases the surface area in contact with the fingers, and like magic, the "felt" recoil level goes down. WAY down.

Finally, the palm-swell contours of the Gripper Pro just seem to fit better than the regular Gripper.

And forget about that "small hands" thing in the blurb. I've got sizeable hands, and the Gripper Pro just plain works better.

If you have a revolver, for a price in the mid $30s, you just can't go wrong by trying a set of these on for size.

Tell 'em I sentcha! (and they'll scratch their heads and go all "who the blazin' fu*k wazzat? never heard of 'im)

terms of mess dress. (And the ladies' mess dress? They feature a long
skirt but it is very much like a pencil skirt, and is therefore
flattering. I'm going to bite my knuckles real quick...OK, back. That
alone made attending the AF Ball rather enjoyable.)

I just realized that it's the opposite of the Cake song - it's a long skirt with a short jacket, rather than the other way 'round.

Mess dress cries out of a sword, though. It's basically a Hussar jacket.

233 I was wondering also - how long will the US Navy need nuclear submarines? The alpha [kg/kW] is obscenely high, like about 70. Because nuclear heat can't go to a cooling-tower for reuse on a small u-boat.

Alpha for rechargeable batteries on the other hand is approaching one (1).

How about building a few nuclear power plants on the ocean floor - say, maybe off Bermuda - and having battery-powered submarines recharge there? or am I smoking crack.

244 135 Hiya weasel and gub nuts,

After missing last week at the range, too Marine ratched to meet mark at our usual digs. It's been a while since I just stood and shot slowly, making sure my breath was calm and my brain completely focused on just pulling the trigger straight back. It was great! I shot a bunch with youngun's PPQ, and my Glock 19 and my 1911. I must say, I did well.
Young ratched, after he got in the groove, was great as well.

And mark is always patient, encouraging and generous.

nurse,

apologies to you and Mark for missing out yesterday after I told you I was going to be there.

I took off Friday night to get to bed earlier than normal on Saturday morning. I met with a good friend, who's wife just walked out on him and their daughter after 24 years, went across the country, and hooked up with an ex-boyfriend that apparently started on Facebook. She had started taking mood-altering prescription drugs. Nobody understands it. Even her own twentish something daughter said she does not recognize her own mother.

The guy she hooked up with is a multiple felon.

I stopped by his place to pick up some ammo from him, and stayed to talk with him. I expected maybe an hour or so stop, and when I looked at my phone, it was 4am, and I lived an hour away.

Maybe next week. I would have liked to have met Marine rached.

Maybe because Alpha is bad metric to use? Maybe one should look at kWh/cubic meter, or kWh/tonne weight.

I suspect a U-boat powered by an appropriate amount of Tesla batteries would have less range than a Tesla car.

Posted by: Dave in Fla at January 26, 2020 07:51 PM (PHotS)

In terms of the Factory Reloads that are around for sale:
They usually use a variety of brass, so they'll be slightly inconsistent by nature. For plinking ammo it should be fine, just don't expect m.o.a. performance.

Another thing which probably depends on the particular manufacturer- the Reloads I bought all seem to skimp on the powder. They still go bang, but velocities are noticeably lower than standard for a given bullet weight.

264 One more thumbs-up on the Prvi ammo. They're also a good source for brass. One of the few for certain calibers, and their prices are good, and one hears the quality fine.

As for shipping, when using Ammoseek, as y'all should when shopping online, they have a little icon indicating relative shipping costs between vendors. Some are very, very high compared to others. SGAmmo always has been among the lowest. And though I haven't been buying ammo online for a while, TargetSports
USA always had free shipping on case quantities (and their prices were decent, too).

289 Haven't kept completely up with the idiocy in CA, but from what I've seen of summaries of the VA depredations, they're an echo of stuff here, and NY, and elsewhere (the anti-gun despots fortunately are not smart, which has cost them tactically in some instances, but they tend to just copy/paste their indefensible crap from state to state).

I'm waiting very impatiently for the judiciary to actually intervene and uphold a central, original, unambiguous constitutional right - something it likes to pride itself on (well, that, and legislating, and making s**t up, and usurping executive power without challenge, and gladly taking congressional power that is idiotically ceded to them).

Haven't checked, wonder if SAF or others have ID'd the most vulnerable (legally) infringements nation-wide to target for legal action. As noted above, a lot of the worst laws are similar or identical, so a domino effect will result if the farce that is the US judiciary ever decides to do one of its actual authorized jobs (well, even that one's a bit made-up, but at least has a long pedigree and makes *some* sense).

297 NASA and its patches predate Star Trek which only premiered on Sept 8, 1966.

Gene Roddenberry and Matt Jefferies were both WWII USAAF veterans. Gene as a pilot and Matt was assigned to the 301st Bombardment Group where he flew as a flight engineer on B-17s.

The United Federation of Planets logo is a circular design spangled with stars and bisected by cross-hairs.

The Star Fleet logo everyone is using to scream about infringement only came into existence at the time Star Trek: The Motion Picture went into production in 1978. Before this date the asymmetrical shield was the ship's patch for USS Enterprise and was worn on the breast of crew tunics, all other starships like USS Lexington had their own patch. The small star set in that shield means that crew member is command track, hence Kirk wore it. But in the 1978-79 time frame, Roddenberry declared the Star Fleet logo would use Enterprise's command track patch.

And that is the rest of the story. All who are screaming about this need to join Wesley Crusher in the airlock sans spacesuit or force field.

Ahem.

I have actually designed approved military heraldry. This is correct.

The interesting thing about Space Force's patch is that it did *not* abide by Air Force rules.

The 'tell' is in the colors. The Air Force requires all heraldry to include two colors - yellow (which is gold, representing excellence) and ultramarine blue (for the sky).

Neither of these are present, reinforcing the independence of the service.

I suspect that some heraldry will be 'grandfathered' into Space Force, but soon they will come up with their own mandatory colors and other requirements.

It's probably going to be a nuclear reactor burning uranium, barring some sudden breakthrough in fusion reactors (i.e. one that works). Marine reactors have an abundance of ocean water for cooling; outer space, not so much. They might have to run the reactor much hotter, and reject waste heat by radiating it away.

Yes, NASA should sue Rodenberry for infringement of their logos. You can look up the history of the Star Fleet logos, which have evolved heavily. First one was the one Capt. Pike was wearing in The Cage.

That came from the original NASA logo.

The triangular/delta/chevronish symbol goes way back to the Army Air Corps.

The new Space Force emblem is just an evolution of the seal for the previous USAF Space Command, which Space Force replaces.

369 Didn't buy it to sell it, and haven't tracked prices much lately, but I did notice the GunBroker price for a snub King Cobra (the original kind), declined from its fevered peak a few years back, to just "a lot". Was wondering if part of the answer was Colt coming out with a new King Cobra. Probably. Whatever.

404 Late to the thread, but spent time this week on cleaning up reloading stations and work bench to finish some firearm projects.

Finished messing around with my new AR-15 pistol build just because--it is pretty much a clone up front of an old school shortie with fixed fsb/gas block, chromed barrel, carbine length gas, adjustable gas key on the bolt carrier, and carry handle. To cut down on blast to the sides, went with a linear compensator--at back is a simple pistol buffer tube with several ways to go on that depending on what I feel like.

Midway was selling Polymer 80 Glock clones that allow a Glock 17 slide and lpk coupled with the shorter grip and magazine of the Glock 19 for under $80.

Regarding ammo, have a cheap bulk supplier in my backyard with not having to worry about shipping. Most of my factory ammo is simply a source of first fired brass and I prefer my reloads for the most part.

Hope all is well Weasel. Thanks for the thread.

Well of course it would be cheaper to make Burke-class destroyers. I was just responding to a call for new Iowa BB's, and saying start from the Montana plans (the last BB design) and the Alaska plans (the large cruisers) if you want to design the next generation of large surface combatants. And armor formulas have likely advanced over the past eighty years before we would even begin to envision forging something like that.

Modern repros of the Howdah Pistols may be what you are talking about--see Pedersoli for those and they make kits and assembled pistols which Dixie Gun Works carries.

The Mossberg Shockwave is a similar type weapon that somehow avoids the AOW classification by the ATF. Does not look pleasant to fire in a substantial shotgun shell.

There is too much hogging and sagging for a brittle ceramic armor like Chobham to really work.

Given modern weapons, a supertanker with a triple hull, shaft-less propulsion power, and plenty of compartmentation and Halon on the outside hull would be a solid defense platform. Most warships these days are steel boxes armed with very large hammers. Defense is a strong offense first, with Kevlar, not armor being a little help.

Mark each enemy combatant with it's own drone armed with missiles (Or torps for an AUV)is another possibility.

Polymer 80 is probably one of the easiest ways to get into making your own Glock clone or doing an 80% lower for an AR. Directions and videos are quite good and most of what you need aside from power tools, files, etc. are available with the kit.

There are some tricks, using a small handheld router to do some aluminum 80% lowers but a bit more tool experience is needed to do it right.

These and 3D printers/CNC milling are rapidly making gun banners dreams into nightmares. Expect these to be a target in future legislation locally.

Just repeating with a lot of folks did back in the day when they had these old warhorses but wanted to fire cartridges through them. Black powder and percussion firing was more than sufficient to cause significant carnage for a long while.

A caution though, the pressure levels for these conversion cartridges is about the same as for the regular cylinder so no hotrodding.

498 Great range session this week, though my first mag with my XD9, I was pulling low.

It's worth mentioning that each gun shoots differently, practicing with one or two guns will make it easy to stay good with them. If you're like me and own too damn many guns, staying up on all of them is problematic.

Buy a few guns, get good with them, buy lots of ammo.

Anyway, as mentioned, the Nurse had an outstanding session, really good groups. Marine Ratchet did very well with the PPQ and Armscorp 45.

499 484, The new Python has significantly different lockwork than the old one and actually revives using a leaf main spring instead of a coiled one. It may take a bit of tweaking to make sure that the bolt (Colt's term) and cylinder notches work together. Tolerance gap at the forcing cone and cylinder might also be too tight.

My guess, early ones are fixed and it becomes a non-issue for later firearms. It would suck to pay premium though and have to send it back to the factory almost immediately.

511 Problem with using a classic BB design *without* the traditional, heavy armor.

The ship won't draft deeply enough to perform to the limits of the hull design.

A fully loaded, fueled, armed, provisioned and manned BB sits all the way down on the marks for good reason. Many good reasons.

Not merely basic seakeeping, but that deep draft better resists the recoil of the 16s.

And without the pure dead-weight of the torpedo-belt, the guns and armored gun-houses will leave ya with a pretty damn top-heavy ship.

Also, I'm pretty skeptical as to how much to "digitize" the thing.

The BB design could be (mostly) fixed by Damage Control Parties. Valves could be opened, closed, re-routed. By hand. Pretty tough to do that when Mr. Circuit Board gets fried, and there's not enough hands on deck to do the job.

For sure, the Nuke powerplant is the way to go on a new BB. But I'd keep a hella lot of steampunk in the plans.. because it's some really battle proven technology.

Oh, by the way. All but a damn few new Littoral Ships are crewed in traditional numbers, for just this reason. The Littorals have (supposedly) automated Damage Control, and very short-handed crews.

I don't trust those ships, and I don't trust that planning.

Posted by: NaCly Dog at January 26, 2020 09:12 PM (u82oZ)

With a letter of marque you are permitted to pursue, capture, and sell foreign ships and their cargo, after an admiralty prize court has finished adjudicating the correctness of the seizure. It is pretty complicated. For instance...the capture of the Odenwald by USS Omaha and USS Somers. That was the last time there was prize money awarded to the USN.

(Look up those ships on wiki.)

It's near the end of its life and will go supernova any minute

A Betelgeuse supernova would be an amazing, rare thing. It would be as bright as the full Moon in the sky.

It definitely seems like it's collapsing. It used to be one of the top 10 brightest stars and is now barely breaking top 20. I'm curious how long it takes to fully collapse. If I remember right not long at all once it loses it's battle against gravity. It would be frigging wild to see that. Orion will have a blown rotator cuff. lol

----
Good point, one my friends and I discussed a bit last week, in fact.

We agreed that the best strategy is to pick the 'default' weapon and make sure you regularly practice with it. Know it inside and out. Bring other guns if you have them, but that's the one you are current on.

If you replace it or change to something else, THAT now is the one you have to use at every outing.

Unlike my friends, I've had the same carry gun for a long time. I know it well. I still practice with it, but I've got so many hours on it that shooting is basically instinctive. Still, it needs some time to reinforce that.

I also practice off-hand, etc. because you never know.

In 1992, new NASA Administrator Dan Goldin decreed that NASA would ditch the 70's era "worm" official logo and return to the original "meatball logo.

https://tinyurl.com/udt7bmu

99% of employees, including yours truly, were really PO'ed. Gradually, I and almost everyone agreed it was a good move. Funny thing is, a lot of NASA Millenial-generation employees I know prefer the worm! It has a "retro" appeal to them.

NASA astronauts really work to out-do each other on mission patches. NASA has an internal "heraldry" office that helps crews develop patches and approve them. Out-doing the other guys, while reflecting mission objectives was hard with 135 Shuttle missions - some patches are terrific, some are crummy, IMHO; all of the mission patches can be found here:

Each ISS Expedition Crew has its own patch, too. Too lazy to give you a link to those tonight!

That burst will last 10 - 20 seconds. And then, a few hours later, the first photons will get here, and will see her start lightning up big time. It will reach peak brightness in about 10 days time, then plateau and gradually dim over months.

And then, after a year or two, it will disappear from the sky. Orion will be missing a shoulder.

And still the legality of the capture was contested in US courts, which eventually found for the US, and resulted in $3,000 per man for the boarding party and two months pay for everyone else.

Note - after contested in court. Any letter of marque would need to be incorporated to protect the owners and investors (do we even have laws for that now?) and engage the services of attorneys to argue the fitness of the capture, with the necessary depositions, taking of evidence, testimony...

With Somers and Omaha it was east - the US supplied the attorneys and the naval crews could be readily brought forth. With private parties - Good God - how much is this going to cost?

565 Final thought on Space Force heraldry: The "stars" actually seem to be a division of the field, a "bend" if you will.

Military heraldry is limited to three elements. The star is one, the combination planet/orbit/ship is another and then the bend of stars are the third. ("Bend celestial?" "Bend ad Astra?")

So it doesn't have to be an actual constellation, just stars serving as a division of the field. I used that in one of my designs to allow more elements into the design.

Yes, according to the standard SR definition of simultaneity. But that's just a convention. It's perfectly valid to define simultaneity as "when the light gets here", and that's actually the practical astronomical definition in use anyway. We record such events as occurring when the light gets here.

Before that, such events are outside the light cone, can have no causal effect, so they haven't happened yet as far as any causal influence is concerned.

I have a CZ-75B Omega on my short list. I am left-handed, and I love the ambidextrous safety/decocker.
Any thoughts?

Bring a few extra to the Tx Mo Meet. I'll bring my usual. Not only will we not lack for guns, ammo, food n' booze, but we'll enjoy a surfeit of cigars!

Point 1. The internet sux in NNH.
Point 2. First report on "Amateur Rifle Bedding For Fun And Profit":
Spent all week looking for pillars for bedding sacrificial Axis 30-06. Found them today at Tractor Supply - called "spacers". Took Axis apart and discovered it already had metal pillars.
More to follow . . .

I've had off and on success with them. Not that particular stick, but the brand in general.

And, yea, if I paid top dollars for a box I'd expect every f-ing one to be perfect.

Returned a box of Ashton VSG's because they were like herfing on a brick.

thanks for the link Vmom 2020. I read a little and it sounds just like what happened with my buddy's wife.

Note the date of the article was TEN YEARS AGO.

In the last few years, I have come around to believe a core problem of our medical industry is the pharmaceutical industry. Money Uber Alles.

598 I fully admit that I was wrong about the VA 2A gathering last week. My takeaways:

1) I underestimated the civility and decorum of armed Americans (why this continues to amaze might be based on the dullards and hipsters I am forced to work and deal with.

2) I overestimated the courage of the Antifags. In the end, they are fags with retarded shit.

3) I do not trust LEO's, especially on the feral level. I fully anticipated subterfuge and goading.

I am so glad I was wrong. And, despite the puffery from the Left, I think they got the message.

God bless America. God bless Donald Trump and his family.

600 Good job, Weasel. I am sitting here holding a Thames Macanudo Cafe still in the tube (horrible thought, is the damn thing made in England?). I plan to enjoy smoking this one while having a couple drinks in Galveston next week. Gotta trot now, Mrs. E is bathing the dog and I have to help blow-dry the little pup before bed. Up at 0400.

601 587 ... Hi CBD,

I'm not familiar with the Omega model. It's supposed to have a better trigger than the standard 75b and the reviews are very positive. At least one review mentioned how well it worked for those who carry condition one: cocked and locked.

I always prefer an ambidextrous safety. It's good to have options.

612 Prime Directive: You have to show up. You must show up. A legion always shows up. ON Monday we became The Legion.
I Went. Almost didn't, one day wanted to, next didn't want to get caught in the "pig trap". Finally said fuck this, I'm going. I'm not taking council of my fears. Thats what they want us Men of The West to do. Let fear rule us. Freemen do not. Thats why Freemen are free, even if they kill us, we die Freemen. It's a simple equation. I don't no fully why I was so confused.
On monday I was in the company of other freemen armed to the fucking teeth. I bathed in the aura of 26,000 Shitlords and shitlordettes.
We own the dialectic now.
Nothing comes close.

613 113 so is it Marines, Army, Navy, Space Force and then Air force?

or with food, Air Force, Space Force, Navy, Marines and then Army.?
just my list it is not definitive.
Posted by: Quint at January 26, 2020 07:30 PM (n13/j)

I expect the major Space Force bases will be Peterson, Schriever, Vandenberg, Patrick. Minor installations or tenants will be Cape Canaveral, Beale, Cape Cod, Eglin, Concrete, Clear. Thule as overseas. IIAMN, Shemya was turned over to the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, which is kind of Statish.
