Posted by: t-bird at January 27, 2020 09:39 AM (Z1eux)

58 Picasso and Braque experimented with Cubism. Gris, a very serious and earnest sort, ran with it, and (in my view) took it as far as it could go. Along with Picasso, Gris' Cubist paintings and drawings are among the very few Cubist works that I find aesthetically pleasing.

Braque, the real originator, the guy who came up with the initial idea, was a brilliant conceptualizer but a terrible technician. He just never had mastery of his materials. Granted, attempting to capture time in a two-dimensional picture plane is one of the great challenges in art, so props for trying.

Success has many fathers

cubism, nope

Posted by: Miklos, paraphrasing at January 27, 2020 09:44 AM (QzkSJ)

87 Analytic Cubism. The general idea is that the subject was broken apart into hints of its composite shapes and forms. The viewer was then supposed to analyze the work and piece it back together in his head. In this way, the viewer examines the work deeply and has a personal relationship with it. If this were a Picasso/Braque piece, the work would be much more complex and tougher to read. The colors are usually drab so nothing distracts from the analysis.

Very soon, around this same year, Analytic Cubism will give way to Synthetic Cubism. The Cubism of Picasso and Braque will never devolve to total abstraction. It would get very close tho, which is one of the reasons why Synthetic Cubism was developed.

"Nadler Five Days After He catches the Chinese Coronavirus"

Last night, the movie "Contagion" was on cable.

I'd never seen it and it was actually pretty good.

On the upside:

Gwenyth Paltrow died and had her skull sawed open (Take that, "Seven"!)

On the downside, tens of millions of people died worldwide and it severely disrupted society.

Funny thing was, "Contagion" rhymed a lot with the current Chinese Coronavirus

Beginning with the plague was "birthed" by bats and pigs.

Check it out if you get the chance.

Avant garde was the goal of Modernist art at the time (and still may be). Something new, something different. A new way to think about art and to look at the world. Art movements at this time were notoriously short-lived-- 5 to 7 years tops before they became too popular and accepted and no longer, by definition, "avant garde". To be new was its reason for existing.

Cubism is probably THE most important modernist style in history, a very close second being Fauvism (To some scholars, they are even). Almost every style in Modernism borrows something from Cubism.

Exactly. The poseurs who wanted and still want to be like Picasso don't get the reality that you have to learn your craft (in this case, putting realistic images on canvas or paper) before you can break the rules of that craft.

In prose terms, you need to be able to write as clearly as Steinbeck before you can break the rules like James Joyce.

I was in a training class once and we were doing post-course exams. The instructor did this weird thing where we took the exams for each person, but as a class group. To keep it from getting out of control, she put a time limit on it - use one song. It played in the background. If the group finished the exam before the song finished, great. If it took longer than that, you stopped there and submitted the exam.

A lot of people did the predictable ones - American Pie, In In A Gadda Da Vida, etc. I went with John Cage's farce of "4:33." This is a piece of "music" made by the asshole Cage that is actually just silence. There's no music at all. As a result, when playing in background, you don't know when it ended. Unlimited time.

Instructor was not amused.

From what I hear, it's not as bad as sars or mers viruses. But it has killed more than the elderly or young, or very weak as they originally claimed. I think it's just another flu virus we need to be aware of and take precautions, like normal during cold and flu season.

313 So.

I hate my Boy Scout district.

Gotta get this out, and it may be a little long so skip to the next post.

My kid's Cub Scout Pack is a bit of a mess. Few volunteer parents, and the Committee Chair was basically phoning it in last year. He left with zero notice in September and left a HUGE mess behind. Since the only other person on the Committee was...me...I now have to clean this mess up. Adding insult to injury, he also acted as Cubmaster and did an even worse job there.

Anyway, got a Cubmaster who is awesome but we're still behind on basic things like, oh, a Pack roster and new applications. Whatever, we're getting it done slowly.

What's now frustrating is the new District Commissioner is being a giant butt. He's very "concerned" that the rechartering is late. Yeah, because there's money for the Council involved here. He "offered" to "help" and is making a hash of everything, pissing off our few remaining volunteers in the process. But hey, this is important because golly we have to get that check written to the Council!

What's more galling is that he's fronting like this is all for the benefit of the Scouts, but when we have actual real issues (and I'll spare you descriptions of the 47 times I called the District for help) he's nowhere to be found. But if the Council thinks we owe them even $50, this Commissioner is calling me two-three times a day.

He promised to help with the Pinewood Derby - never showed up. Later that day he calls me with demands for dues collected by Scout and such. I flipped and told him off but good. This is usually the timeframe where I feel a bit regretful but I gotta say...I don't. Assmunch deserved to get pushback. I said he's worse than my HOA because at least the HOA gets the street plowed and the common area mowed....he doesn't even do that much, only around to take credit for our work.

Sorry to vent. BSA is rocketing down a trough now.

Regardless, there's no way to know given the trust situation in China. We should cancel flights from mainland China and restrict entry by Chinese nationals until we know more. At worst, we overreacted. At best, we help contain inflow into our country.

Iranian Christians own no property and have no income because they but the church.
Those Christianity are strong supporters of the Jewish people and Israel.
I have no independent knowledge but this is precisely the type of information the media would embargo.

373 Listen to an expert. Drink more liquor. True Fact - liquor was invented to find some way to keep water drinkable over long periods of time. The alcohol content kills the bacteria."

It wasn't just to keep it drinkable, it was to start off with it being drinkable. In the great Typhus epidemic of London that finally led to the imposition of water quality standards and a public water supply, it was found that one of the few groups who seemed to be immune to the epidemic were working men who only drank beer, never water. Having been boiled during the distillation process, beer was bacteria free.

Going back in time, unless you had your own private well that you were very careful with, all of your water had flocks of sheep and herds of cows crapping in it upstream from you. Not to mention Country Joe and his inbred offspring.

400 Somebody at one of the cable-nets had several classic modern plague movies all cued-up and ready to roll as this story broke several days ago. One that you don't see every day, and has some truly frantic acting, is Elia Kazan's "Panic in The Streets" (1950), with Richard Widmark, Zero Mostel, Jack Palance, and Barbara ("Watch your step Johnny-O!") Bel Geddes.

I remember it as being my first indication that Public Health Service officers wore Navy uniforms and insignia, how fascist-statist it was for an immigrant libertarian who also ratted on the commies, and the main thrust of the plot appearing to be how poorly paid federal civil servants were. Tough tho.

It is a noir film indeed, with a gritty close-up look at why my Aunt Miriam from Leesville often told me that NYC was just muscling in on the Mafia history that rightfully belonged to New Orleans.

Panting, sweaty, feverish grisly death "on the waterfront."

Sydney (AFP) - A woman died while taking part in a cake-eating competition to celebrate Australia Day, local media reported Monday.

Paramedics were called to a pub in the state of Queensland on Sunday afternoon after a woman was involved in a "medical incident".

Public broadcaster ABC reported the 60-year-old had a seizure after she "shovelled a lamington into her mouth".

440 Somebody at one of the cable-nets had several classic modern plague movies all cued-up and ready to roll as this story broke several days ago.

Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at January 27, 2020

I saw it again recently. It was filmed on location in pre-"We're a theme park now!" New Orleans. You can see the original riverfront with its warehouses. The block that Widmark and wife Bel Geddes live on, we're shown, is as poorly paved a bit of street as this place has to offer (I bet you it hasn't been paved much since 1950), and nobody seems to have air conditioning in homes or offices. A very good glimpse of the city before Tourism became the be-all and end-all.

Oh, and it is a good noir, too.

Youngsters who haven't been around hospitals much don't understand that one of the worst things that can happen to someone who's sick is that they take so many strong antibiotics that all of their gut bacteria is wiped out. When that happens the intestinal tract starts to malfunction in all kinds of nasty and painful ways like spastic colon and all of that. A lot of people have had sections of their intestines surgically removed when probably all they really had was a gut bacteria problem.

My hometown ditched the Boy Scouts several years ago because all the money was going out of the local org and into the national. Now most only did cub scouts up to the 4th or 5th grade so there weren't any full fledged Boy Scout groups beyond that and you had to go county level I think. They replaced the Cub Scouts stuff with a boys club. They essentially do all the exact same stuff without the Boy Scout name.

If you're interested I could probably reach out to find out what they all did and if your area would have the interest to ditch the dying organization but continue with the local tradition.

499 infectious contagions have at times (and with good reason) been compared to a wildfire.

The rate and extent of the spread hinges on multiple factors. The suggestion that this virus is genetically similar to SARS suggests there will be a similar pattern of contagion.

Mathematical modeling of contagion is helpful but not infallible.

Lay reporters when interviewing an epidemiologist or infectious disease specialist will likely be given a range of possible severity and the headline will scream the worst-case scenario presented.

Be aware, stay informed, but don't light your hair on fire. Sneeze-uational awareness.

CBD's post on this yesterday was spot-on.

In order to believe Team Trump was blindsided by this you have to believe Trump is and idiot who doesn't realize there are disloyal people in his administration who are constantly leaking and trying to bring him down. That seems unlikely to me.

I also doubt that Bolton has decided to kneecap Trump and go against the team he has supported his entire career to side with people who hate him and who he hates. The Democrats have no idea at all what Bolton will say and it seems to me the odds are way in the favor of him saying LOL GFY.

Trump has a yuge, bigly advantage - he knows he didn't do what he's being accused of.

Almost unfair, really. Yeah - let's just shut this all down, quietly, and avoid making a scene.

Nah - on second thought, let's make a scene.

Old radical libertarians used to characterize him and his bright-eyed enthusiasts as "How You Can Profit from The Coming Cholera Epidemic."

That's only funny if you actually remember him, or his many books.

Remember that kook in the early 80's who had the "Dow" books? Wild predictions of where the Dow might go someday. Like, "Dow 20,000."
