Posted by: t-bird at January 27, 2020 09:39 AM (Z1eux) 58
Picasso and Braque experimented with Cubism. Gris, a very serious and earnest sort, ran with it, and (in my view) took it as far as it could go. Along with Picasso, Gris' Cubist paintings and drawings are among the very few Cubist works that I find aesthetically pleasing.
Braque, the real originator, the guy who came up with the initial idea, was a brilliant conceptualizer but a terrible technician. He just never had mastery of his materials. Granted, attempting to capture time in a two-dimensional picture plane is one of the great challenges in art, so props for trying. Posted by: troyriser at January 27, 2020 09:39 AM (E2EAq) 59
Interesting. The lack of boldly colorful geometric shapes is perhaps a fault, a serious fault I think we can all agree, but the fun-house mirror aspect is certainly intriguing.

Analytic Cubism. The general idea is that the subject was broken apart into hints of its composite shapes and forms. The viewer was then supposed to analyze the work and piece it back together in his head. In this way, the viewer examines the work deeply and has a personal relationship with it. If this were a Picasso/Braque piece, the work would be much more complex and tougher to read. The colors are usually drab so nothing distracts from the analysis.
Very soon, around this same year, Analytic Cubism will give way to Synthetic Cubism. The Cubism of Picasso and Braque will never devolve to total abstraction. It would get very close tho, which is one of the reasons why Synthetic Cubism was developed. Posted by: Kris at January 27, 2020 09:44 AM (OyyDO) 88

OT....oh, alright - Alternate Title: "Nadler Five Days After He catches the Chinese Coronavirus" Last night, the movie "Contagion" was on cable. I'd never seen it and it was actually pretty good. On the upside: Gwenyth Paltrow died and had her skull sawed open (Take that, "Seven"!) On the downside, tens of millions of people died worldwide and it severely disrupted society. Funny thing was, "Contagion" rhymed a lot with the current Chinese Coronavirus Beginning with the plague was "birthed" by bats and pigs. Check it out if you get the chance. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing at January 27, 2020 09:47 AM (Mc5lZ) Avant garde was the goal of Modernist art at the time (and still may be). Something new, something different. A new way to think about art and to look at the world. Art movements at this time were notoriously short-lived-- 5 to 7 years tops before they became too popular and accepted and no longer, by definition, "avant garde". To be new was its reason for existing. Cubism is probably THE most important modernist style in history, a very close second being Fauvism (To some scholars, they are even). Almost every style in Modernism borrows something from Cubism. Posted by: Kris at January 27, 2020 09:57 AM (OyyDO) 166

Back in the analog cable days, at least where I lived, the premium channels were blocked at the box by little round canisters - they were band-stop filters blocking those particular channels. All you had to do to get the channels was catch the box unlocked (it happened) and pull the filters. If you got caught, play dumb. My dad was never as proud of me as when I figured that out. Posted by: Shit Happens at January 27, 2020 10:04 AM (QhxWE) Back in my childhood, there was a pay over the air channel called ON TV. After midnight, they would go to Adults ONly and show porn. It played in the background. If the group finished the exam before the song finished, great. If it took longer than that, you stopped there and submitted the exam. A lot of people did the predictable ones - American Pie, In In A Gadda Da Vida, etc. I went with John Cage's farce of "4:33." So.
I hate my Boy Scout district. Gotta get this out, and it may be a little long so skip to the next post. My kid's Cub Scout Pack is a bit of a mess. Few volunteer parents, and the Committee Chair was basically phoning it in last year. He left with zero notice in September and left a HUGE mess behind. Since the only other person on the Committee was...me...I now have to clean this mess up. Adding insult to injury, he also acted as Cubmaster and did an even worse job there. Anyway, got a Cubmaster who is awesome but we're still behind on basic things like, oh, a Pack roster and new applications. Whatever, we're getting it done slowly. What's now frustrating is the new District Commissioner is being a giant butt. He's very "concerned" that the rechartering is late. Yeah, because there's money for the Council involved here. He "offered" to "help" and is making a hash of everything, pissing off our few remaining volunteers in the process. But hey, this is important because golly we have to get that check written to the Council! What's more galling is that he's fronting like this is all for the benefit of the Scouts, but when we have actual real issues (and I'll spare you descriptions of the 47 times I called the District for help) he's nowhere to be found. But if the Council thinks we owe them even $50, this Commissioner is calling me two-three times a day. He promised to help with the Pinewood Derby - never showed up. Later that day he calls me with demands for dues collected by Scout and such. I flipped and told him off but good. This is usually the timeframe where I feel a bit regretful but I gotta say...I don't. Assmunch deserved to get pushback. I said he's worse than my HOA because at least the HOA gets the street plowed and the common area mowed....he doesn't even do that much, only around to take credit for our work. Sorry to vent. In the great Typhus epidemic of London that finally led to the imposition of water quality standards and a public water supply, it was found that one of the few groups who seemed to be immune to the epidemic were working men who only drank beer, never water. Having been boiled during the distillation process, beer was bacteria free. Going back in time, unless you had your own private well that you were very careful with, all of your water had flocks of sheep and herds of cows crapping in it upstream from you. Not to mention Country Joe and his inbred offspring. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 27, 2020 10:31 AM (Kpl3J) 374

Posted by: WitchDoktor, as if anyone gives a shit at January 27, 2020 10:41 AM (C+We0) My hometown ditched the Boy Scouts several years ago because all the money was going out of the local org and into the national. Now most only did cub scouts up to the 4th or 5th grade so there weren't any full fledged Boy Scout groups beyond that and you had to go county level I think. They replaced the Cub Scouts stuff with a boys club. They essentially do all the exact same stuff without the Boy Scout name. If you're interested I could probably reach out to find out what they all did and if your area would have the interest to ditch the dying organization but continue with the local tradition. It's a theoretical number for comparison to other pathogens, but the number itself is not perfectly reflective of reality. infectious contagions have at times (and with good reason) been compared to a wildfire.
The rate and extent of the spread hinges on multiple factors. The suggestion that this virus is genetically similar to SARS suggests there will be a similar pattern of contagion. Mathematical modeling of contagion is helpful but not infallible. Lay reporters when interviewing an epidemiologist or infectious disease specialist will likely be given a range of possible severity and the headline will scream the worst-case scenario presented. Be aware, stay informed, but don't light your hair on fire. Sneeze-uational awareness. CBD's post on this yesterday was spot-on. Public broadcaster ABC reported the 60-year-old had a seizure after she "shovelled a lamington into her mouth". ________________ Some woman died in the U.S. a year or so ago, after she choked on pancakes at a pancake eating contest. But if you are old enough to have quit The Party a long time ago, you'll remember Harry Browne and his get-rich-slow schemes. Old radical libertarians used to characterize him and his bright-eyed enthusiasts as "How You Can Profit from The Coming Cholera Epidemic."
That's only funny if you actually remember him, or his many books. Remember that kook in the early 80's who had the "Dow" books? Wild predictions of where the Dow might go someday. Like, "Dow 20,000." And we laughed... Posted by: Way, Way Downriver at January 27, 2020 11:14 AM (oRpiG) 612

601 President Trump Questions Why NPR Exists
DNC propaganda paid for by taxpayers. NPR and PBS need to be defunded. Posted by: Guzalot at January 27, 2020 11:13 AM (prSvo) it used to be subsidized TV for rich White People, now it's just subsidized TV for Rich Liberals. Bezos and Zuckerman should just take it over and fund it themselves, they love it so much. Posted by: Tom Servo at January 27, 2020 11:17 AM (Kpl3J) 624
