Is This Something?

Nicholas Cage in an adaptation of H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The Color Out of Space"?

Huh.

It's from the producers of a horror/revenge movie called Mandy which I've never seen but Jay from Red Letter Media said is good.

I don't get that "the color, the color" thing at the end. It makes it sound like a parody of Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now.

Or J. Peterman, seeing the Urban Sombrero for the first time.

I really don't know what this movie is going for.

11 'Mandy' was good. I dislike Schwarzenegger intensely but he put on a good performance as the father of a doomed Ghoul Fever victim.

But to be true to the Man From Providence it is spelled 'Colour'.

59 I liked the conceit of Mandy. We have these zombies turn in ten seconds unless they are important characters then it's longer but this posits a period of months. We know that the person is going to turn but we don't know when and they are still the people we know until they turn. How does that affect our relationships?

The ending was a copout and I don't think Schwarzenegger himself added to the role but he helped make the movie by being a big star.

74 It looks like they've expanded the story, but -

"Colour Out of Space" is essentially like that "Creepshow" segment with Stphen King as the goofy bumpkin who gets mold from a meteorite growing all over him.

King pretty clearly stole the idea from HPL.

The meteor carries some kind of indescribable color with it that slowly begins to contaminate everything in the main character's farm. IIRC it kills his wife and at the end of the story the guy has made his peace with the idea that the color will take over everything. And he presumably dies.

Like most HPL stories it's a slow reveal of something horrible that can't really be described or explained, only alluded to.

It's grimly effective as it is.

But, this is Hollywood and they're going to jazz it up a bit. With some creativity this could be pretty great.

The man doesn't seem to turn down roles, however weird. And he gives every role his all - whatever level that may be. I think Cage misses more than he hits, but he also takes some risks that a lot of mainstream stars wouldn't. Little picture? Sure. Weird AF picture? Sure, let's do it. Blockbuster? You got it.

And he does bring a certain ... bizareness to his performances. Like the alphabet scene from Vampire's Kiss - one of the weirdest things in a big movie:

193 Doesn't it seem like, at this point, the Left needs Biden to be the candidate? I mean, if it's Buttjudge (for example), it throws a whole big gay monkey wrench into the whole "electoral interference" with Ukraine.

Plus they know they're going to lose, so might as well blame it on an old white, too conservative, old style Democrat male. Saves face. And if he happens by some crazy ridiculous change win, they can step him down gracefully (ahem) and make his idiot VP, who no one voted for, the president.

Think about it. Trump destroying any known Socialist on the world stage would be a major embarrassment and setback for the commie dream. Democrats have zero intention of publicly arguing the merits of Socialism with Trump because he will turn it into a flaming corpse and then piss on it like a dossier Russian hooker.

I liked the story but, like a lot of Lovecraft tales, I doubt it can ever be effectively conveyed on the screen. Too much of what he deals with is built on the notion of being inherently incomprehensible to the human mind. I guess the plot itself can be brought across, but the special effects are gonna be lacking.

What you are suggesting is not a typical donor photo with a lot of friends and other party goers in attendance. Posted by: Browncoat formerly known as Mike at January 20, 2020 08:03 PM (o38N1)

Agreed. They've done it (meaning "The Dunwich Horror") twice, both times with bizarre and not helpful departures from the actual story. The second one was much, much worse. The odd thing is that Dean Stockwell was in both. If they want to do it a third time (and hopefully get it right), and include Dean again (this time he could be Old Man Whateley -- it could work!) , they'd better hurry.

There is an argument that the lemons in Southern Italy are just different and we can't replicate their limoncello. There is also an argument that the stuff they send us is crap and not even close to the real thing.

We are not going to change our latitude and longitude so you do the best you can with what you have. There is an American limconcello called Fabrizio that i think is pretty damn good. "It is also cheaper than the Italian stuff.
'For sure the best was had at local stands in Southern Italy. The lemons there are different, that is a fact. But also it tastes better because you are traveling around Southern Italy and at your happiest point. Same with Gelato. Sure it was better in Italy. You were traveling and having a blast.

And they have crap gelato in Italy too. Like anywhere, you have to seek out the good stuff, and it is rare.

If you're going to a desert island, don't take along any HPL. After a while, the coconuts will seem to contain strange angles, the sand will have an eerie hue, and then...that giant tentacled thing will jump out of the water and drag you off to its cyclopean lair. Always disconcerting, if not positively annoying.

My advice, if you're going to a desert island, is to take along MaryAnn and Ginger. Much more fun.

Yeah, I saw that. Actually quite atmospheric and interesting.

There was another Lovecraftian movie--I forgot what it was. But it had a nice historic build-up, so keenly Lovecraftian. It was weird though, because after some decent writing and performances through the first 2/3s of the movie it falls apart at the third act and becomes complete schlock. Unfortunately, I saw it in two sittings. I stopped it about 2/3rds of the way through. When I rejoined it, there was about 3-5 minutes of the same quality that I had been enjoying. And then WTH is this?!

Posted by: Axeman at January 20, 2020 09:05 PM (ppLlx)

444 NLurker - I use 50% (100-proof), for no reason other than that was the highest clear liquor easily available. Don't know what typical real limoncello proofs are, but probably close. Oh - and there's no math here, so won't figure it out now, but in the end the alcohol % is substantially below 50, as I usually add 2/3 to 1 simple syrup as the sweetener.

I think most Italian commercial versions use the Santa Theresa lemon. Am thinking of planting one, there is a CA nursery that has them, though my available sunny space has a higher priority allocation to lime and juice orange trees when I get around to it.

451 CAS's Yoh Vombis is like Piper's Omnilingual in being one of the few old-school Mars stories which could be adapted to our current knowledge. These rely on the Martian civilisations being dead. So it doesn't matter that the planet is dead today.

NLurker - I use 50% (100-proof), for no reason other than that was the
highest clear liquor easily available. Don't know what typical real
limoncello proofs are, but probably close. Oh - and there's no math
here, so won't figure it out now, but in the end the alcohol % is
substantially below 50, as I usually add 2/3 to 1 simple syrup as the
sweetener.

I think most Italian commercial versions use the Santa Theresa
lemon. Am thinking of planting one, there is a CA nursery that has
them, though my available sunny space has a higher priority allocation
to lime and juice orange trees when I get around to it.

The original purpose of ONA was to provide the SecDef/DOD with its own in-house independent intel analytic operation that could contract with outsiders (well, the primary distinctive purpose).

It was the funding agency for a lot of the Beltway Bandit research and analytical work (more policy than technical) during the Cold War.

Rachel Maddow is "reporting" on the Trump White House. Reading paragraph after paragraph after paragraph from that new book by those WaPo reporters. Just reading from the book as if she's the audiobook.

I can't take her for more than about 30 seconds at a time.

Honestly, I don't know how you can stand watching that , that, that, whatever.

Long ago, I would just laugh at her for being a freak.

The lying and propaganda didn't bother me much.

But now, her schtick just isn't amusing any more. It is just PROGressive propaganDA.

542 'The Colour Out of Space' has essentially the same plot as 'Alien': Hapless humans get caught up in the reproductive cycle of an alien being with dire consequences. In this case, the alien lifeform is a sort of gas -- the 'colour.'

If you like Lovecraft, the Atlanta Radio Theatre Co. (at ARTC.org) has done a number of adaptations, most about an hour long.

It very well could but from a different direction. Atkinson was a top lawyer in the NSD in the Comey FBI before moving the IC IG job.

552 My favorite Lovecraftian movie is Silver Linings Playbook. The part where Nyarlothotep says IF I AM READING THE SIGNS and then drove everyone mad is my favorite. At least that's what I saw the umpteenth time my wife made me watch it.

I went back in the water when Trump was elected. The sharks are swimming around eating each other now. I'm mainly observing their conspiracy-building and hope to be able to hang in until someone, somewhere, is led away in handcuffs.

558 I love HP Lovecraft, but I think "The Color Out of Space" is one of his more boring stories. Heavy on atmosphere, light on action. A meteor hits near a New England town, and everything turns grey and dissolves. I'm waiting for a good movie adaptation of "The Dunwich Horror".
Posted by: Browncoat formerly known as Mike at January 20, 2020 08:03 PM (o38N1)

The Jonny Quest Episode where they meet a giant invisible electric monster is pretty much the second half of the Dunwich Horror in cartoon form.

559 Have not read a lot of Lovecraft, but "In the Mountains of Madness" was good, in that it freaked me out, bigly.

560 Mitt Romney
45s

Beginning tomorrow those of us in the upper chamber face a daunting task as we start to sift through the evidence and hear witnesses and perform what is quite possibly our most important job-short of voting to declare war.

I have not yet made up my mind and as we begin proceedings, polls show that a clear majority of Americans believe the President has committed serious crimes and should be removed from office. While I don't doubt this, I would like to assure the President that I have not yet come to any conclusions of his guilt or innocence and won't begin my personal deliberations until I hear ALL the evidence.

i love the part when fleeing the shoggoth where the fellow who looks back starts panting out subway station names as he runs because presumably the monster racing down the tunnel is about that size and speed.

That's just the way minds work sometimes, I thought that was a nice touch.

565 The Shunned House is a pretty good one. No spoiler, but the ending is a little unusual. And I personally think The Thing on the Doorstep is a little underrated. It's telegraphed through the whole story so there's no big surprise, and it's a little awkward as a story, but I like it. Cozy horror.
Posted by: hogmartin at January 20, 2020 09:52 PM (t+qrx)

The Whisperer in Darkness is a fave of mine, partly because it makes Vermont/New Hampshire into a hellish remote wilderness full of incomprehensible horror. Kinda like Bernie Sanders.

566 "The Strange Case of Dexter Ward" "The Mounters of Madness." Stephen King used H. P. for many of his ideas. In the "Mt.s of Madness" the author describes what seems like the egg pouch in Aliens.
