Comics were a big deal for me in the 60's growing up.
I had a paper route to fund the habit from age 9 on, and Saturday afternoon was comics time. I had 3 stores that carried various comic brands and would plot out my Saturday afternoon trek accordingly. When there were no new ones released in a certain week, I would make the long walk to the used comic book store. (actually that was just a small part of their business, but all I cared about!) Then.. I'd head home with a 25 cent bag of Fritos (big bag in 1960!) and a soda and make a sammich, and sit in the crappy torn up chair (but damn comfy!) in the basement for hours reading. It was my way of getting away from my 3 brothers who were always around. Not that I didn't play with them otherwise.. but I just liked my alone comic time.. Good memories.. Hey everybody.
Wow, great topic WeirdDave. Thanks. I've mentioned this before, but it's interesting if you look at the very earliest Peanuts comic strips. They were quite different not only in appearance, but also in themes and tones. It appears even Charles Schulz, at one time, was a bit of an Angry Young Man. There's one where Charlie Brown is going to the drugstore to buy a comic book; he says "it's the only thing that can revive me." When he finally gets there, CB exclaims "what a fabulous gory layout!" And EVERY comic has titles like: Death, Hate, Kill, Maim, Murder, Revenge, Hit, Punch, Pow... Posted by: qdpsteve at January 16, 2020 09:55 PM (L2ZTs) 23

Back when Magic, The Gathering card packs first came on the market, our daughter and son got into them in a big way. Soon they had (small) shoeboxes full of them. One day our son found a publication which enumerated all cards produced up to that point in which a dollar value for each one was assigned that reflected its rareness, powers or whatever. Of course the two of them went through their respective decks, tallying up their new found source of wealth (not paying the least attention to what they had paid to accumulate their respective hoards, of course). They spoke with pride of how astutely they had amassed such riches. Until, that is, when I asked, "Do you know who has made a killing in the Magic, The Gathering marketplace?" "No, who?" I never liked comic books or got their allure. The only ones I recall reading were SGT. Rock and Garfield I realize I lost all cred with the Garfield thing but I wear my views on my sleeve. I quickly transitioned to Soldier of Fortune in my early teens. special mention to The Far Side. I know it is not really a comic book but I loved those. I am very fortunate -- very little cancer in my family. Grandfather died of bone cancer that started as the prostate cancer many guys of a certain age acquire. His doctor gave him the song and dance about something else getting him before the prostate cancer. Sadly, he was one of the unlucky few. My father died of kidney cancer that had started spreading. But I've always considered his caused by environmental factors. He was stationed in the engine room of a supply ship during WW II, then worked in the coal mines for nearly seven years, followed by twenty some years working for City Service on the Jersey turnpike. That was when the guys pumped the gas for you and repaired anything that went wrong. I figure the old boy spent nearly thirty years inhaling a lot of unhealthy chemicals. No one else on either side of the family ever had a brush with cancer.
It must be terrifying to be a woman with several close female relatives who had had breast cancer. It must be almost as terrifying to have more than one or two close relatives who had died of one form of cancer or another. Best of luck, browndog. Grew up with comics. We would get 25 cents each, and three of us go to the local store and fight over which one to buy, and the other two quarters would go to candy and pop.
Up at Nonny Gompy's cabin we would go to in the summer, there was a huge stack of comics for a rainy day reading (in Minnesota, there are always rainy days at the cabin, too rainy to go fishing) Wish I had some of those old comics today. There is another term for this but I can't think of it right now lol. I don't recall The Haunted Tank but I looked it up as people do. A close family member of mine saw a more than a few doctors in their day. One of the doctors was Jeb Stuart IV. He was a good doc from what I hear and enjoyed hearing that I was so interested in history. i have also met namesake descendants of Isaac Trimble and Dan Sickles. Sickles is the one that really interests me and his descendant could not have been nicer. But he is not on our political side. Oh well. Posted by: Quint at January 16, 2020 10:52 PM (n13/j) 214

Had a collection of the Furry Freak Brothers also, gave them to a friend who crashed his Harley when he was in the hospital for a long time.
Favorite of those was a panel showing tumbleweed up on a hilltop watching traffic down below, and doing a kamikazi strike on a VW van putting down below yelling "Geronimo" as they got caught in the undercarriage and burning the van. Posted by: alamogordo at January 16, 2020 10:54 PM (x4eOM) 221

MisHum -- I did not know that about Irish Setters. Most of my purebred dog experience was with Shelties. I bought a book about them when I had my first one, which is where I learned about the gay ears. I also learned that mine was too tall. But that was okay. I had absolutely no plans to show him. He was pet quality, as was the second one, which also had gay ears. The Sheltie mix I got from the pound had perfect ear confirmation. LOL!!!

When I was just younger, my father had a '48 Pontiac. We were driving some where in a snow/sleet storm and a little foreign car slid through a stop sign, bouncing off the Pontiac. The little foreign car was totalled. There wasn't even a scratch on the Pontiac. These days, just looking sideways at a car causes a couple thousand to repair.

Dad and his cousins were gear heads. I learned from them how to tell different cars from 30s on. They taught me how to check the oil, tire pressure etc.
My first job was at a full service gas station. I was hired when I could find the dip stick in every car that pulled in for about a half hour time frame, and add oil and test air in tires and add air when necessary. I was a girl and the first one to work at full service gas station in my home town. This was in the seventies, but as I am only allowed to be 29 by blog standards, I was negative umpty years. I taught my niece to change the oil in her first car and to change a tire, etc. I am a feminist in that way, but not in the new way. Posted by: alamogordo at January 16, 2020 11:36 PM (x4eOM) 303

I'm not sure why I bother, but here goes nothing.
The presence or absence of conjunctival petechiae does not differentiate between mode of strangulation. The common feature of deaths with conjunctival petechiae is increased venous pressure (usually but not always prior to death) leading to rupture of capillaries and seepage of blood into the surrounding tissues. (degree of neck compression is such that arterial blood goes in, but venous blood cannot leave the cranium.) The presence of petechiae in the conjunctivae does not present definitive evidence of whether Epstein inflicted his own injury or someone else inflicted it. This conclusion is supported by the fact that petechiae characteristically and predictably are present in deaths that are preceded by impairment of venous egress from the head, while continuous or intermittent arterial perfusion to it continues. Examples of such deaths include those involving partial suspension hanging, ligature or manual strangulation, traumatic asphyxia/chest crushing injury, plastic bag-ligature suffocation, carotid sleeper holds with a concomitant struggle, acute right heart failure, status epilepticus, and those deaths preceded by a vigorous cardiopulmonary resuscitative effort, or prolonged or violent paroxysms of coughing or vomiting. citation available on request Posted by: Muldoon at January 17, 2020 12:08 AM (m45I2) 367

I still remember a panel from the one called Hansi: The Girl Who Loved The Swastika about a woman who was a big Nazi who became a Christian.. It dealt with the rape of the German woman after WWII. Hansi was in a camp run by Russians after the war, and the panel was titled "The nights were unthinkable". It showed Russian soldiers coming into the woman's barracks, pulling off their clothes. The next panel showed a woman holding her dress together saying "Hansi, you're lucky, they don't want you, you're too skinny". Subtle, but obvious what went on. Hansi escapes from the camp and makes it to the American sector, where she meets an American soldier. She's terrified because he's chewing gum and she's been told all Americans are "gum chewing gangsters", but he treats her with respect and honor. A small thing, really, but it was a part of my childhood that helped form my love of America and unshakable conviction that America is GOOD. Propaganda? Perhaps. But none the less, generally true. 45 years later, it still resonates (obviously). Now 50+ year old cynical me can make all sorts of arguments, but still, it sticks. There are so many simple pleasures they will not enjoy. The loss of individualism, the loss of freedom. Even simple niceties are being lost. They piss away their life on their phones and social media. There is one little glimmer of hope I see, and its definitely because of trump. People are looser with their wallets, and seem to be buying toys they had deprived themselves of, or dreamed of growing up. I'm not even talking about older dudes on a midlife crises. I see younger dudes building things because their dad had one, or older brother, or because of some movie when they were a kid. The young dudes are getting shovelhead crazy. Thats not for the faint hearted, but they're doing it. I did quite a few this past year. More than the last 4-5 years combined. I'm seeing dudes buying second or even 3rd bikes because they are cheap. Maybe, just maybe there might be a slight awakening. Little LCD didn't care and didn't get his license at 17. And he had a car waiting for him. Myself? My birthday was in September, so I was one of the youngest of my crowd. I made the driver's test appointment for 4pm the day I turned 16, right after school. I already had a car, thanks to Grandma's bad eyesight, and the fact my only older nephew was a total fuck up and embarrassment to the entire family. So she gave the 1961 T Bird hardtop, with leather seats and 29,000 miles on it, to me instead. 390 V8, 4bbl carb. It was a heavy car, but it never, ever ran out of power. once all us old fucks die off, nobody is going to spend money on cars like that. the hobby will fade away.
This is true. I have a guy in my networking group that sells classic cars for people that want to get rid of them. Older folks who can't drive them anymore, wives who inherited them from deceased husbands, that kind of thing. He's selling, on average, one car every 3 days, but he notes that the market is getting older and older and there isn't a younger segment replacing it. It makes sense, as he explains it. 30-40 year olds coming into money don't have an American Graffiti mythos to interest them in the classics, and absent that, objectively, old cars suck to drive vs modern ones. Look, my dad has a 49 Olds Rocket 88, and I can give you chapter and verse about the history of the car, the fact that it was the origin of NASCAR and rock and roll, but while I get a big kick driving it, objectively the driving experience is garbage compared to a modern car. Without the cultural touchstone to the historical reality of what the cars were, why on earth would anyone prefer one to a modern Honda? The younger generation doesn't have that touchstone. The one thing to remember is that every trend that you think is going to be the next big one won't be.
(1) Humans are fickle. (2) Trends continue until they cease. (3) You will have little warning about the cessation of a trend because (1) above. (4) The best laid plans of all of the best social planners are destined for the crapper because of (1) above. (5) In support of (4) above I offer the last 100 years of history. A 70's style hard tail chopper with a 5 speed, evo engine, and electric start. I did the motor for him, and he built it as far as he could, and then brought it back for the technical parts of the build. I had to redo some wiring, install the belt drive, get the brakes working, get it running, tune it etc, but the kid did great. He would come by and hang out from time to time and learn how to do shit when he built his first bike, a 56 panhead, which I also did the motor for him.. The things I do wonder about all of these trends is:

https://preview.tinyurl.com/wml77ab Posted by: Snappy Sammy Smoot Ah, glad to see this. When we lived in Chicago, Skip Williamson & family lived next door. I looked across the gangway at the building next door and thought, look, it's a reflection of our daughter in the high chair. Nope, it was Skip's daughter, same age as ours, in her high chair. Later, his wife and Milady Webworker had twins near the same time, they had girls, we had boys. They left for the suburbs before we left for Oklahoma. Got to see a lot of Skip's sketches, portfolio, paintings. Quite a talented guy. Crazy as a loon but that went with the territory. Besides being up in the Chicago underground comics pantheon, he was Playboy's cartoon editor in the golden age. Threw up on our lawn a couple of times, but, you know, on the lawn, not inside. So the CBO is saying the WHBO broke the law in withholding aide to the Ukraine. I wasn't aware that had happened, and I'm not seeing any mention of it anywhere except on the radio. Anyone know what's going on there? Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at January 17, 2020 01:38 AM (ZXnzo) Posted by: attila the thrilla at January 17, 2020 01:39 AM (w7KSn) 433
A parting thought-fart: For forty years - between 1950 and 1990 - the USA lived with the thought that any minute of any day the USA and the USSR would get into a nuclear war which would end all of mankind, be the end of all things, Armaggeddon, etc., and so forth. That did not happen. The big "nukem-dukem" did not happen. A lot of brushfire wars on the peripheries, but nothing big.
1990 was thirty years ago - three quarters of the length of the Cold War. Think about that for perspective, think about how that dates you, think about how that effects your thinking, and think how people who never grew up would react to things today, and your Cold War reaction. To them you are as dated and obsolete, and as curious a specimen as a Span-Am war vet would be. Understanding the past is actually the gateway to understand yourself. It would seem antifa approached some of the people
headed for VA capitol on the 20th, and the idiots agreed to cooperate with them based on antifa's "support of firearms ownership and opposition to the new laws". And that their presence should entail them being not being dressed like antifa. I would like to think that a lot on our side aren't that clueless but I think we all know that they are. Posted by: there are only three star wars films at January 17, 2020 12:52 AM (67XdO) I am not following it but would be surprised if any mainstream group decided to cooperate with Antifa. Sounds to me like a lot of people want to demonize regular folks who want to voice their opinions in a free society. I don't recall these issues getting put forth before The Million Moms March or The Million Man March. I don't recall these issues when they had countless marches against the president. Maybe there are bad players, but a lot of people are concerned about what is going on and they have a right to protest. We see these protests around the world today by people who are risking more than Americans by showing up. I think as conservatives we should focus on election day as the Left does. But no way it is right to make half the country feel reticent about exercising their rights of free speech. Sen Marsha Blackburn of TN makes a great point. Biden, Warren, and Klobuchar are currently each spending millions of dollars and thousands of person-hours to defeat Donald Trump. And they will all be sitting in judgement of President Donald Trump during this Senate event. Conflict of Interest, isn't that the term? Sen Blackburn says that they should recuse themselves. Immediately. The retort is that those Senators signed "an oath", they are to be trusted their judgement is fair and just. Ok, let's review the information we know. On one hand, spending tens of millions of dollars that you raise from strangers in every waking minute campaigning, and every moment of your life busy for months, for a singular goal that a certain unnamed OrangeMan now sits in your way. On the other hand, "I signed an oath". Sen Blackburn has a valid point, it seems to me. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at January 17, 2020 02:05 AM (sy5kK) 464

Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at January 17, 2020 02:31 AM (9Om/r) Even non Italian Americans think of Southern Italy when they think "Italian food"/ And there is good reason, the stuff is great. I spent some time in Umbria, which is next door to Florence and they are all about truffles and wild boar. And I believe in Florence they prefer rice to pasta. There is a place for that for sure, but I love the Southern Italian stuff. THere is a line from decades ago by Rick Steeves. I know he is a huge lefty now and I don't think much of him these days. But years ago his books were a great influence. Anyway, he had a line about Italy that always stuck with me. He said, "If don't like Italy by the time you reach Rome, don't go further south, it get's worse. If you love Italy by the time you get to Rome, go further south, it gets better". Rome was a blast, but expensive to live, and driving around in rome is a nightmare. My father had a harder time understanding the italian the farther north we got. Even in rome he had a little trouble. He said its more of a proper, or high class dialect. No problem in naples or in that general area. No clue what he was saying but he had the locals laughing. It was actually pretty funny. My father was born here, but his parents were from just north of naples. If he started speaking in italian they were like "ahh you a from a naples". If he started speaking in english which totally gave him away as an American, and then switched to italian, they would be like "very curious, you sound like you're from naples". lol Posted by: Berserker-Dragonheads Division at January 17, 2020 02:55 AM (9Om/r) 496

The Deep State thought they had effed Sharyl Attkisson on her lawsuit against them for spying on her, after they got the charges dismissed. Weirdly, somehow. Not enough direct evidence, or something, then the judge gave Eric Holder immunity. Huh? So she refiled it, with the testimony of an actual witness that helped the government spy on her. And because of this new witness, named Rod Rosenstein as running the spying on her. So far, no response. Way to go, Sharyl. I like her, she fights. https://tinyurl.com/r49avp4 .... One federal court of appeals judge even called this dismissal of her lawsuit Kafkaesque given how well-nigh impossible it was for her case to proceed under our justice system's rules and judicial interpretations rigged in ways that protect government lawbreaking. Sharyl described her first lawsuit and some of the shocking roadblocks used by the government to American Thinker readers here, and has even written a best-seller, Stonewalled, describing these events in greater detail. But as anyone following the news knows, the lawbreaking Deep State can't even be shamed by exposure of its illicit deeds. In her lawsuit refiled on January 10, Attkisson relied on a whistleblower who was actually involved in hacking her computers. He identified some of the other government officials complicit in the very disturbing spying on her. The refiled complaint quotes government forensics experts as being quite shocked, demonstrating some within the government Intelligence Community thankfully have consciences. Just watched a video of James May (from the British Top Gear) staging a model train race with the Germans. The track ran 10 miles (actual miles, not scale miles) through the English countryside, and each team ran three trains; a steam train, a diesel electric, and one that was completely made up by each team. The diesels finished first with the German diesel ahead of the British entry, the experimental engines finished second with the British hydrogen powered contestant beating the German battery powered entry, and the steam trains came in last. In a previous event (no Germans that time) his Hornby Flying Scotsman (with realistic chuffing sound) failed to complete (breaking down after all of 500 yards IIRC) but made it all the way this time. A very emotional ending. *snif* (The German steam train finished a few hours behind the Scotsman).
And no matter if you are a model train aficionado or not, your time was much better spent reading this entry than anything Rain-Man-do has to say about anything. Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde, NC Chapter at January 17, 2020 03:23 AM (ZXnzo) 506

One of them replied, " we are not from the same place, I am from a town twenty miles from his!":. I am not directly comparing Italy to Spain as Italy is certainly more united than even modern day Spain. But Italy at one point was made of up city-states that fought each other as if they were countries in and of themselves. That left a mark and makes the country all the more interesting.

If this gets worse I am sure people will come out on both sides to provide evidence that helps their candidate. I love how on Daily Kos there is a diary that says they are both right and memories can't be trusted. You know how the press seizes a word of the day, and on all the channels, they use the same thing, to drill the anti-Trump message?
Here is our word for the next few weeks, or however long, for this Shampeachment. "Childish". Every time Nancy, Adam, Jerry, or any of these puspacks talk, let them say a sentence or two and just say "childish". Especially if there are others around. It is accurate and demeaning, as it should be. You can use 4 letter words if you want to, but I think "childish" really frames their actions as to what they are. And it implies a lot. Childish representatives should not be re-elected. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at January 17, 2020 04:08 AM (sy5kK) 534

so VA gun owners are planning a protest at the Capitol. A local Antifa group is joining them.
At first, I was "oh brother", but then the more I thought about it, the more I like it, because: Lefties have 2nd Amendment rights too, it makes the protest more balanced and a louder message to the gun-grabbers, and if they somehow are not on their best behavior, they will be crushed like bugs on a windshield by the thousands of gun owners they associated with. https://tinyurl.com/v3fm25x When gun lovers rally in front of the Virginia Capitol in Richmond next week, the local chapter of antifa will be there too. But their members won't be wearing all black, and they don't plan to douse right-wingers in milkshakes or Silly String. Instead, local antifa will join thousands of conservatives who are expected to descend on Richmond that day in protesting pending gun-control legislation introduced by Democratic lawmakers. Antifa Seven Hills, based in Richmond, are opposing the slew of gun bills introduced by the newly Democratic Legislature since November, because they say those types of laws are used primarily to criminalize poor people, minorities, and leftists and to bolster law enforcement's power. I think it's been pretty important for us to focus on the fact that gun control in America has a legacy of racist enforcement, said Antifa Seven Hills spokesperson James (who asked that his name be withheld to avoid getting doxxed online). Like taking guns away from black people, because black people were perceived as a threat to property and the sanctity of the state. ............. In WA state, where the Blues have finally gotten control of all branches of govt, they are firing up gun grabbing laws. It is still early, but all the CT and NY nonsense, 10 round mags, no AR-15s, taxes on guns and ammo, all kinds of crap, but it is coming.
Similar to VA. WA citizens who stand for the flag and kneel for God will be watching. Sporty. Wonder how often I will be using that euphemism the next few months. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at January 17, 2020 05:17 AM (sy5kK) 565

As for cars, I drove a hand-me-down 1969 Olds Delta 88. Huge car, 900 feet per gallon. But dad always liked big-ass cars. For a while he drove a massive Chrysler Newport coupe. The front hood was big enough to have a picnic on it. Posted by: DB at January 17, 2020 05:21 AM (iTXRQ) 566

This antifa protesting for 2A rights thing is new to me as I said before I am not following it. I still wonder what pro 2a group has said they are all in with Antifa. I thought it must be fringe but I admit I don't know either group a lick likely. Sorry if I am skeptical.
Defending the 2A is not up to a couple guys on x side or y side. And discrediting a cause is pretty much what the MSM is about these days. If some people want to call themselves antifa and obey the law and support freedom, well, it is a free country. But when first mentioned upthread, I was skeptical for some reason. I sure wish Virginians, as well as other Americans were as riled up in early Nov. 2018 and 2019. Stats show if Repubs had turned out as they did in 2016 there would be no impeachment and no flipping of the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate. No...while under the new Statewide education improvement plan (The Kirwin Commission), the State has decided to set the goal of jumping from the middle of the pack in national education standing, not to #1 in the nation, but #1 on the entire planet. All in one 4 Billion dollar unfunded jump. A lofty, but probably unattainable, and unaffordable goal. But while the government sets goals in one area, the citizenry has quietly attained another goal. All without any federal or taxpayer funding. We have jumped from #6 to #1 in the rate of STDs in the city. The power of the people!
