Is Iran Cracking?

Two Iranian TV journalists have resigned in protest of the regime, one apologizing for having told "lies" on behalf of the mullahs for thirteen years.

Much of this is sparked by the revelation that it was Iran that shot down the Ukrainian airliner, after days of lies that it had simply crashed.

So: The Iranian media blames the mullahs for the downed aircraft, while the allegedly "American" media blames Trump.

At least two presenters working for the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB have announced they have quit their jobs, with a third saying she quit some time ago after having told lies on behalf of the state for 13 years.

Gelare Jabbari apologised in an Instagram post, writing: "It was very hard for me to believe that our people have been killed. Forgive me that I got to know this late. And forgive me for the 13 years I told you lies."

...

The journalists; statements are part of a crisis of confidence following the initial attempts by state officials to deny that Ukrainian jetliner 752 had been shot down by mistake by members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corp (IRGC) air defence force.

The crisis is leading even some of the news agencies most closely associated with the regime to start reporting on the street protests, or a least to start addressing the allegations about a potential state cover-up.

Here's one example of an Iranian journalist speaking out:

Speaking candidly on BBC Radio Today, Ghanbar Naderi, a commentator on Iran’s state-run Press TV, admitted: "There is little trust in the government and people want more freedom. The lies they said about the shooting down of the aeroplane [have] lost public trust. The Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps know it very well."

It's not just journalists who are speaking out. One of Iran's top actresses also condemned the regime, and Iran's only female Olympic medal-winner straight-up defected:

People are taking a lot of actions they would not take if they expected the regime to be in power in six months.

They're acting as if the regime is a short-term problem.

Here's a tweet from one of the journalists who resigned:

The regime seems as if it knows it has a limited time remaining:

As I have reported in the past, Iran faces a demographic crisis over the next two decades as its population ages rapidly. There are five prime-age Iranians supporting every Iranian over the age of 65, but by mid-century, the ratio will collapse to just 1.6 to one. Strangely, the Iranian authorities have reported an increase in the"“total fertility rate," namely the estimated number of children that the average woman will bear during her lifetime. The increase evidently is due to optimistic assumptions about the future rather than observed behavior in the present.

Iranians face desperate conditions, if not actual hunger, due to the effect of economic sanctions. Add to this the long-term effects of mismanagement of the country's scarce water resources. Afshin Shahi wrote recently in the Journal of Asian Affairs: "Approximately 97% of the country is experiencing drought conditions. Due to gross water mismanagement and its damaging impact on the country, Iran faces the worst situation in the water resources of any industrialized nation. Tens of thousands of villages have been deserted and most of the major urban centers have passed their limits to absorb new rural migrants. Some officials predict that in less than 25 years, 50 million Iranians would be displaced from their current homes because of the pressing ecological conditions."

Few countries have endured this level of deprivation outside of full war mobilization, and few have seen such a drastic decline in the number of births. The only modern comparison is Venezuela. Governments with a monopoly of economic resources and the willingness to kill significant numbers of their own citizens can stay in power for quite some time, but there seems no question that Iran's regime is fragile and prone to destabilization.

Protesters are out on the street, chanting "Soleimani is a murderer, his leader a traitor." By "his leader," they mean Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei.

Iran has painted US and Israeli flags in the street, so that people will step on them; which is, of course, an act of disrespect.

But protesters are breaking ranks to step around the US flag.

They also avoided stepping on Israel's flag!

Trump tweeted out support of the Iranian people, in Persian:

That immediately became the most "Liked" (as in, people clicked the "Like" button) Persian-language tweet in Twitter history.

As the Iranian people and Trump rise up to oppose the terrorist ayatollah, the Democrats, of course, step in, just as they did in 2009, to try to prop up the terrors state:

You know what might a reason for the protests? The fact that Iran murdered 1500 of its own citizens protesting the government just a couple of months ago.

But Democrats -- including their media wing -- continue conspiring with and colluding with this anti-American, murderous regime.

And the mourning continues:

Thanks to Tami for that!

10 Fingers crossed.

Imagine the contrast.

Obama props up Iran with billions of dollars that aren't technically owed to them.

Trump orchestrates Iran's collapse after a few years of harsh sanctions and one missile.

Iran is about to experience a counter-revolution, and the spark was NOT the atack on the US embassy on Irzq, was NOT the killing of Suleimani, was NOT the Iran missile attack on the US military bases, was NOT the saber-attling tweets and counter-tweets between the Mullahs and Trump -- all of which were touted as THe Big Thing that was going to cause WWIII -- but instead the seemingly irrelevant afterward side note about an airliner that crashed far from the center of the action.

Who would have guessed that Iran managed to shoot itself itself in the foot in this weird peripheral way, and THAT would cause the regime to topple -- and not any of the many "big news" events that led up to it?

It can be true that more than one thing can be the cause of something.

It is absolutely true that Iran's incompetence is the proximate cause of the plane crash.

But it is also undeniable that Trump's assassination of Soleimani is also a cause. In the law we speak of cause and proximate cause.

'But for' Trump's drone strike, the crash does not happen. Obviously. This crash occurred because we assassinated Soleimani which caused a predictable response from Iran.

Unfortunately, part of that response was shooting down a Ukrainian jumbo jet which they somehow mistook for an American cruise missile.

The estates of the passengers of that plane cannot sue the US for what happened. But it certainly doesn't happen if we don't start the shooting.

Afterward, the students had reserved a room in the student union for Q and A. I got in line and waited about 40 minutes for a chance.

This is the question I asked them.
"If the United States returns the Shah to stand trial, will you send the Hostage Takers to the United States to stand trial?

In essence, they decided they would think about it. No doubt right after stoning the Shah.

Yeah, because they were complete bastards and everyone hated them.

I think the reason Romania broke from the pack of peaceful revolutions was power politics, and it's kind of a sad thing.

I think the military saw which way the wind was blowing, and when protests erupted in Romania over the incident in Timisoara, they realized that if they sided with Securitate they would be swept aside with the Ceausescus. But if they cacked the two demons themselves, they'd be hailed as liberating heros and be able to seize power for themselves.

Where they remain to this day.

The popular, peaceful uprising would have probably been much better.

It is my understanding that the mullahs, being generally more cultured, sophisticated, and open to foreign ideas than the Arabs, many years ago installed a generally socialist economic system and plastered an Islamic face upon it. It is also my understanding that the predictable economic failures of said socialist economy have helped turn a large number of young people against fundamentalist Islam because they have learned to associate Islam with deprivation and economic hardship. I think the reason Romania broke from the pack of peaceful revolutions was power politics, and it's kind of a sad thing.

I think the military saw which way the wind was blowing, and when
protests erupted in Romania over the incident in Timisoara, they
realized that if they sided with Securitate they would be swept aside
with the Ceausescus. But if they cacked the two demons themselves,
they'd be hailed as liberating heros and be able to seize power for
themselves.

Where they remain to this day.

The popular, peaceful uprising would have probably been much better.

The Jane Fondas, who hypocritically call for the earth to halt, as they themselves retire to their mansions and 4000 sq. ft. closets stuffed with clothes. When people are armed fanatics, and the other side is not armed- guess who wins across the span of history?

And just because Iran has (reluctantly) accepted responsibility doesn't mean we should ignore our part in what happened.
Posted by: Seattle Slough at January 13, 2020 04:05 PM

-----------

The shooting started a long time before that Ukrainian jet was shot down.

The Iranian bought and paid for Iraqi Shia Militias were shelling and rocketing US Bases in Iraq all through December. After they killed an American, PDT bombed the militia bases. Then the Iraqi Shia Militias attacked OUR US EMBASSY (leaving graffiti saying Suleimani is our Leader!).

The stupid freaking Iraqi Shia Militias pinpointed our target for us with their own graffiti.

We hit Suleimani on January 2. We didn't fire another shot. The Iranians started throwing missiles around the same night they shot down the Ukrainian jet. The US had no planes or missiles over Tehran that night.

These are the FACTS.

Unfortunately, part of that response was shooting down a Ukrainian jumbo jet which they somehow mistook for an American cruise missile.

Wrong. If you are correct that "but for" the Soleimani smoking the Uke airliner would not have been shot down, you would have established a direct causal link between the US missile and the Iranian one, and therefore the estates of the passengers on the aircraft WOULD be able to sue the US.

What actually occurred was a subsequent intervening cause: I.e., an inbred goat-fucking imbecile in charge of a missile battery decided to fire a missile at a target that had absolutely zero characteristics of an inbound American missile, three hours after Iran had fired outbound missiles into Iraq. Thus cutting off the "but for" of our perfectly rational action in turning Soleimani into panic and body parts.

In the name of transparency, the German government made the Staatssicherheit archives public after reunification.

In the movie "The Lives of Others" there's a scene during the denouement where the protagonist visits them to find out what had really been happening to him.

This was considered a controversial scene in Germany, because there's a quiet taboo about this - it just isn't done. The victims don't want to know which of their loved ones were informing on them (and it was ALWAYS someone close), and many of the informants were and are deeply ashamed of their role in the Stasi excesses.

I will say, We don't know - but looks like the beginning of a preference cascade. A good description of regimes like this is that they are very Brittle - they may look very strong and cohesive, but the instant a crack starts, they can shatter completely. Kind of like auto safety glass.

JJ noted in his morning thread the assassination of another Shiite militia leader in Iraq. The Sunni forces have grudges against all of those guys; but you don't carry out an assassination on that level if you fear retaliation. This feels like all of the many enemies that Iran has made are suddenly feeling like they can get away with all of the revenge and retaliation they've wanted to take for years.

And of course for a regime that's reeling - they're already dealing with more than they can handle, and they're going to be facing a hundred new challenges from a hundred directions.

Jesus.
Can't anyone see I am in no way defending Iran?
As you are all explicitly defending Trump?

I am pointing out that more than one thing can be a cause. Obviously Iran's negligence is the proximate cause of this disaster.

Obviously we drew first blood and none of you were surprised that Iran shot missiles at us in response to what we did.
None of you were.

Part of that kind of thing is missiles hitting the wrong thing. It happens. We threw a stone through our neighbor's window. They threw stones back. One of their stones hit their own car. Yes, that's their fault. But our throwing the first stone is also a "but for" cause of the broken car window. Not a proximate cause. Not a legal cause. But a factual cause.

This isn't a debate. You can't possibly be debating this.

I'm not saying we were or were not justified in killing the guy we killed and in the manner in which we chose to do it. I'm not going to play armchair quarterback on that because I don't have all of the information.

But to claim we had no part in this disaster is a joke. We don't have a large part, but we have a part. And it's OK for us to look at our part and see whether we did the right thing or not.

People here don't seem to understand the difference between factual causation and legal cause.

Can anyone here honestly tell me that this plane is shot down without us killing Soleimani?

No. No one honestly can.

The blood started flowing in November 1979 when Iran invaded our embassy in clear violation of the Vienna Convention of 1961. They did it 40 years later in Iraq with a senior Iraqi general on the ground overseeing the operation.
This time we had a President who didn't waver in his responsibilities.
The plane getting shot down was a direct result of the Iraqi attack on our embassy and their ensuing incompetence within their command and control structure in responding.

Suleimani would have died in bed if he wasn't attacking US Citizens and US Embassies.

The Iraqi Shia Militias left graffiti on the burnt out US Embassy buildings saying "Suleimani is our Leader". The Militias put the target on Suleimani. We just hit the shot.

We hadn't shot anything at Iran for a week. Iran was the only people firing missiles the night IRAN SHOT DOWN THE UKRAINIAN JET.

538 328 Tex, I'm not predicting nature of any new regime*. Just pointing out that Iran, apart from long-standing regional/ethnic separatist issues (generally low-level intensity) in Kurdish, Arab, and Baluchi areas, is a big resource-rich country with a dominant culture, and won't be carved up or likely much affected by wishes/machinations of neighboring states, and certainly not Russia or the Gulf Arabs.

Posted by: rhomboid at January 13, 2020 04:28 PM (El6T/)

I agree with you; and also point out that it really doesn't matter much to us what the new government looks like, as long as they quit trying to mess around with their neighbors. Internally, they can do whatever they want, as far we're concerned. I think the necessary chaos of one regime collapsing and the uncertainty of creating a new one should keep them occupied for the next 20 - 30 years. I also agree that they're still going to be much too strong for any outside forces to take them over - a bit like France after their revolution. We just need to be sure no new Napoleons arise.

There's a very good book about North Korea published in the mid-aughts, called Under The Loving Care Of The Fatherly Leader. There are a lot of defector interviews in there, but one always stuck out to me-- this guy grew up there during the 80s and 90s, raised on the secret police and propaganda and the lies about the rest of the world being full of howling barbarians and all that, until one day the thought popped into his head that whatever the outside world was like, *it could not possibly be worse than where he was*. So he escaped.

That's one thing that gives me hope for the future, even if just a little. You see it over and over again, people raised under these systems, no matter how much lying and BS the regime piles on there's a part of their minds that says, "No, this is bullshit and these people are lying."

600 SS is trolling based on the insane Law Professor Lawrence Tribe's comments with respect to "Proximate Cause". But he doesn't grasp that legally, Tribe's argument is idiotic, which any 1st year law school student could tell him.

Everything that ever happens leads to everything else, as the infamous anecdote about a Butterflies wings flapping in the rain forest relates. BUT, legally, how does one decide that one action clearly leads to another? This is called "Proximate Cause". The first leg of this is the "But For" test - "but for this happening, that would not have happened." This is what Tribe and SS are pushing, BUT - this, by itself, is virtually infinite. "But for my watch breaking, I would have been on time for my interview, and I would have gotten that job, and I would have had enough money to buy that new car, and I wouldn't have gotten into that car wreck when the tire blew, therefore the watch maker caused my car accident."

No. That is clearly madness, which is where the "Proximate Cause" test comes in. Common Law has always held that when there is an Intervening Cause - a Proximate Cause completely responsible for the harm on it's own, which takes place in time AFTER the contested action, then the Chain of Causation is broken. In this case, the Iranian commanders bad decision to fire was the ultimate Proximate Cause of the tragedy, and that was strong enough to break any causal links to any previous action, from a strictly Legal POV.

601 The plane wouldn't have been downed after salami tried to threaten the embassy if he hadn't tarried to long out with his cohorts planning new attacks.
What was HE doing in Iraq? Wasn't his country.

I guess the probs love having embassyvworkers murdered by terrorists while they sit back and watch.

602 So...

On the night Suleimani was dealt with, the comments were fully FLOODED with what I can only assume were Iran-sponsored trolls.

There seem to be way, WAY less of them.

Another sign they are in trouble? Don't have the money to send the trolls?

MLF has plants in the US.
Oddly the CEO's last name is McCain.

Mike can get it done!

That's his slogan. Mr Know it All. He would be the penultimate Big State technocrat, who would love the Big State (Deep State) apparatus and enjoy making it work for him. Worse than Obama, because he is smarter and more industrious. Obama was kind of sloppy and lazy.
An industrious little tyrant, Mr. Bloomberg.

Man, if it hadn't been for the those sadistic killers, the Wright Bros., all those people on that plane would still be alive!

No. No one honestly can.

Can you tell me honestly that the plane would be shot down without an attack on our embassy in Iraq?

No. You honestly can't.

611 Still, the funniest scene out of Iran in the 1980's was Khomeini's corpse falling out of the coffin and being man-handled by the crowd of imbeciles.

I just hope the Mullah' files on all the Democrat Scumbags through the years who've taken bribe money from them come out after (and if) their gov't falls.

Remember all the KGB files that were suddenly made available when the USSR closed up shop?

Honestly, it was shocking. Practically, every single "people's movement" around the world and in the US turned out turned out to be no such thing at all, but rather a Soviet run or financed operation.

And things that hadn't made sense before suddenly did.

S-o-o-o-o, our Middle East "policy" has been a dog's breakfast for ages with little of it making sense.

I'd love to see all of the Democrats and Media folk on the Murderous Mullahs payroll. I suspect a lot of #NeverTrumptards are on that list as well.

It will be glorious!

614 Tom Servo:

How dumb do you have to be to explain why we are on the same side of the proximate cause argument without knowing it? Answer: As dumb as you.

I clearly explained that the families of the passengers on that plane could not sue the US. I clearly explained that we are not the proximate cause (or legal cause) of that crash.

But we started shooting, which you are all accepting as justified. Why? Has this idiot of a president not lied enough times already? Did he not predict Obama was going to start a conflict with Iran prior to an election to drum up support? Is he not the more embarrassing president of our lives? Fattest since Taft. Less faithful than Clinton. Dumber than W. More petty than all of them put together.

Fuck off. We started this conflict. They shot down their own citizens by mistake as a part of their response to this conflict.

Deny that if you want. That doesn't change anything but simply confirms your dishonesty and lack of integrity.

620 Clearly, Nancy Pelosi is guilty. If she hadn't tried so hard to impeach Trump, Trump wouldn't have felt the need to avenge the deaths of American and allied soldiers and the attack on the American embassy, which in turn led to the Iranian military shooting that plane out of the sky.
Nancy Pelosi now has more than a hundred deaths on her conscience. Hope it was worth it.
