11 It's a nice painting. I like the bright colors. The happy little boats in the ocean and the happy clouds in the air will make you even happier.

14 This is interesting. One boat is pushing off, one is on shore, and several seem to be approaching the shore.

So they don't seem to be fishing dories, they have some sort of business on the south beach.

CBD chose this because they're there to club baby seals and CBD, sensibly, hates seals.

130 LSU Tiger fans own the record for most beers consumed in a single football game. According to the WSJ, fans bought 60,687 beers during a single game and that's the largest number ever sold at a college game. I'm surprised. The House has the sole authority over impeachments, to wit, they open an inquiry, gather evidence and testimony, advance articles out of committee and vote on them in the house.

The Senate has the sole authority over trials, to wit, they receive the articles, they hear testimony regarding the facts from both sides and then vote either to convict or acquit.

This bullshit about gathering more "facts" and hearing from witnesses is fucking bullshit and ahistorical.

More fact gathering at the trial means the articles where deficient of sufficient cause to advance them.

it represents the desolation of the Monday morning Soul;
melancholic existential sadness is starkly highlighted by the alleged purity of the clean bright sand, yet in reality it is is the broad expanse of emptiness in our blighted lives;
an abandoned boat and net, once our hope, is now nothing more than failed dreams and lost chances;
people, distant, barely there, stooped under the burden of their work never look up, never engage, there is no human connection;
distant sails on the horizon, full of wind and spirit, leave us, never to return.

362 I was in Bulgaria recently I really liked how the elevators worked.* The floors are numbered from 1, with 1 being the ground floor (unlike in Britain) but the basement levels are just negative numbers. -1 for the first sub-surface level, -2 for the second, etc. A number line. So much sense.

* This is in terms of operation. Practically, they're extremely small and claustrophobic, even in new buildings.

370 Late to the thread, dammit! Love this painting with its perspective, the subtle colors and the way he lets the soft light of a partly cloudy sky dominate the scene. So accurate for a seascape. Anyone know if this is a watercolor? It has that feel.

Elements of the painting remind me of the approach of Andrew Wyeth: subtle detail within a soft scene that still manages to provide a clear image.

Thanks for this one, CBD.

The labor force remains tight, wages are rising, and people are coming off the sidelines to find work, according to new data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) monthly Employment Situation Report. Highlights from the report include: the unemployment rate remained at 3.5 percent, matching the lowest rate since May 1969; nonfarm job gains were 145,000, bringing 2019's total to 2.1 million; the U-4, U-5, and U-6 alternative measures of labor underutilization were all at series lows; and the employment-population ratio for prime-age women increased 0.3 percentage points to 74.4 percent, which is 3.1 percentage points above the November 2016 rate.

Posted by: Nevergiveup at January 13, 2020 10:54 AM (cEsBM)

He was on active duty with the armed forces for 10 years. As NGU said, he was a combat helicopter pilot. I remember one of his tours in Afganistan as part of the coalition forces was cut short when the press learned of where he was and instead of keeping their mouth's shut, started blabbing to everyone about it. He already was a target , and then this put his entire unit in jeopardy , so the decision was made to send him back to the UK, which he was really upset about.

The press is truly vile, not just here but in most countires. I understand they want to escape it in London, but because of who they are , they will never escape it. They ought to learn to live with it better, as their mother has done.

500 The "skip college and go to trade school" gang would be loath to hear it, but my senior master craftsman trades friends found a form of "selling out" to be greatly to their advantage.

Our HVAC guy got a job as a community-college trade instructor, after it looked like he would not make back the retirement funds he lost in the great crash of you-know-when.

One master plumber I knew well (he designed the hydronic system in my house) went to the bigger university hereabouts as a staffer, doing actual plumbing, and sold his private practice, because the state employees' health plan was so much more comprehensive than the plumbers' union plan (and, my MIL being covered by the plumbers' plan, that must be one hell of a health plan). He died of a sudden heart attack, so maybe he had a certain feeling.
Both electricians who used to do side jobs for me went with the university hospital, just so they'd have more spare time for grandchildren.

There is a great deal of kicking and screaming about how god damned wonderful it is to be in the trades, mostly enunciated by jumped up junior-college coders whose asses are perfectly formed to the Walmart/Miller Aerons in their cubicle. It's a STEM degree, you damn poet!

It's a great thing to bloviate and envy individual entrepreneurs who do things, like, fillings. Actually running that damn business is quite a lot more than meets the eye. When you pay that guy $400 for unclogging your toilet on Saturday night? He doesn't put that $400 in his pocket, I don't care what your brother in law told your gullible ass.

Wallis was ugly and Eddie The Vee-Ei-Ei-Ei was an idiot.

The green and pleasant land dodged a bullet when he quit.
Posted by: JEM at January 13, 2020 11:13 AM (8erNz)

Having watched and read all of the stories about Eddie Vee Ei Ei Ei that I can, I now am comfortable believing that all of the heat and noise about Wallis Simpson was a great big smoke screen to cover up the real reason they went so far as to dump him. Although of course it's been proven that Wallis Simpson was sleeping with Von Ribbentrop at the same time she was sleeping with Eddie, so she was a go-between.

I think it's now clear that Churchill and the rest of the British establishment had uncovered hard evidence that Eddie was actively in negotiation with Hitler to keep the UK out of any war, and that he actively sympathized with and supported the Third Reich. Even those who didn't want war knew that this would destroy the Royal Family forever if it came out, and the Wallis Simpson affair was as good an excuse as any.

This explains why, after he lost his crown, Eddie was *never* allowed to set foot in England again, living out his days in Bermuda and France. In the old days, he would have been beheaded on Tower Hill, but the Family chose exile instead.

Markle will have loads of baggage and will sound like any other Democrat at best.

She's a woke idiot and there's a lot of material on her past that may or may not be true but she'd be spending a lot of time trying to disprove it.

Really Big Breaking News (Kidding): Booker, who was in zero polling territory, just dropped out of the Democrat Presidential Primary Race. Now I can rest easy tonight. I was sooo concerned that I would someday have to go head to head with him!

578 559 She wasn't even the girl everyone wanted to bang from suits. Everyone wanted the hot secretary that you just knew would be wild. Markle wasn't the hot girl on that show.
____________

Never saw the show, but I don't think she's particularly hot. She has a thick waist and chicken legs, and her face is only average.

581 @542

Her celebrity and notoriety derive almost exclusively from being married to a royal.

She was a bit actor on a number of television programs, she was only a series regular on one show.

She's had minor to unaccredited parts in a number of film.

And that's it.

I don't see how once she and Harry renounce their royalty they remain a thing?

It's all truly bizarre.

588 565 509 Think Sarah Palin crosses with Trump and you have a Megan Markle factor as VP on the Dem ticket. Not saying it will happen, I'm saying moves are being taken by her and the royals for it to be a legit possibility.
Posted by: squirrelly dan at January 13, 2020 11:15 AM (inFcx)

So you don't like any of the Dem candidates either....
Posted by: blaster at January 13, 2020 11:22 AM (9VeU0)

No it's a clown show. They will have to put in a solid VP (in terms of marketability) to win. It's either Tank Abrams or with the moves Harry and Markle are making, it sounds like she is an option.
Markle with Biden would be the Dems best bet. She would go after Trump and Pence, and it would be hard to land counter punches against her in the eyes of the average voter and would probably hav the effect of turning voters away from Trump and Pence (validating OrangeManBad rapist and racist) and towards Biden/Markle.
Our side better not coast o this one.

591 Markle becomes Slow Joe's VP pick. Somehow, who knows why, they win. Sworn in, Joe's head begins to leak, and he is found with a bottle of shampoo in his nose, dead as a door nail. Markle and AOC go shopping for shoes, and AOC is nominated Secretary of State.
