Get Woke, Go Broke: Star Wars, Doctor Who, and Star Trek Are Now All Dead Brands Due to Identity Politics

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will limp past a billion, maybe today, but that's about all it will make. Theaters are dropping it, and it's making smaller and smaller amounts every week, with big drops weekend-to-weekend.

It's made less money every single weekend than both previous films in this #FakeNews trilogy, and it's even making less money than the non-trilogy "Rogue One."

In fact, it's expected it will make less money than Rogue One, becoming the fourth most money making films out of five -- only Solo, which lost money, made less.

It's a big deal that it's making less money than Rogue One, because that's one of the freestanding spinoff movies, which were never expected to make more money than the main-storyline trilogy films.

But Disney Star Wars' failure is now complete:

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker earned another $2.4 million on Wednesday, dropping 40% from yesterday and a whopping 86% from last Wednesday. That gives Walt Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars sequel a $460.9 million domestic cume. The film is officially over the unadjusted $460 million (counting reissues) domestic gross of the first Star Wars beginning back in 1977 ($1.495 billion adjusted), and it’ll likely end the weekend above the unadjusted-for-inflation $474 million gross (counting the 2012 3-D reissue) of Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace ($882 million adjusted). Alas, at its rate of descent, it not only won’t get anywhere near The Last Jedi, it won't end up matching the $532 million domestic finish of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Meanwhile, #FakeNews Doctor Who's ratings continue to plummet.

The ratings fell in America:

BBC America's Doctor Who ratings continued to decline with the release of Episode 3 "Orphan 55."

TV Series Finale reports Doctor Who Episode 3 "Orphan 55" had an abysmal .10 rating with total viewers only reaching 468,000.

This is more than a 20% decline from Episode 2, Spyfall: Part Two.

Spyfall: Part Two had a .15 rating and only 589,000 total viewers. That was a more than 25% decline from the premiere which had a .19 rating and 790,000 total viewers.

And ratings are dropping like a stone in the UK, too:

In the United Kingdom, Doctor Who News reports the "Orphan 55" episode was watched by 4.19 million viewers. Radio Times previously reported Spyfall: Part Two had UK viewership at 4.6 million. This is nearly a 10% decline in viewership. Not as substantial as the American audience with BBC America, but still a significant drop off.

In other words, episode 3's ratings were worse than episode 2's, which were worse than episode 1's, which in turn were worse than anything from the previous season.

You don't have to be a Timelord to chart the future ratings of this dying show.

You may have heard -- or not heard -- that Star Trek Discovery was an identity politics trash fire.

Its ratings are very bad, though CBS tries not admit that. The ratings were bad enough that Netflix, which had partnered with them to air the show overseas, laughed them off when they wanted a new financing partnership for the next season.

But Star Trek fans had hoped that the new Star Trek entry, Star Trek Picard, would return to the show's original tone and vision, and without all the politics.

No dice, says decrepit ham Patrick Stewart. The show's going to be about Trump and Brexit, with Star Fleet reimagined as a Galactic Bully that needs to get its nose bloodied by #TheResistance.

The new "Star Trek" series starring Sir Patrick Stewart isn’t being explicitly billed as "woke," but it seems the series’ star, who will reprise his role as the legendary Enterprise captain, Jean-Luc Picard, believes "Star Trek: Picard" will have a message for anti-immigrant leaders and global isolationists.

The series will have a "more pessimistic take" on Starfleet, the quasi-military arm that handles discovery, research, and, generally, law enforcement duties for the United Federation of Planets, according to Newsweek. Stewart described the fictional organization, now years past the events of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and the subsequent Star Trek films, as hopelessly corrupt and cruelly "isolationist" in the face of a galactic refugee crisis.

...

"Picard," he notes, is "me responding to the world of Brexit and Trump and feeling, 'Why hasn't the federation changed? Why hasn’t Starfleet changed? Maybe they're not as reliable and trustworthy as we all thought."

Stewart goes on to describe both the United Kingdom and the United States as "f***ed."

Can I just say I always thought he was a shitty actor, since the first time I saw him in a minor role in Excalibre, as one of the first knights to swear fealty to Arthur?

He's just hammy and deep-voiced. Everything is always the same with this boring tone of a bad literature teacher reading parts of Paradise Lost to you.

Fans had hoped that this Picard show would return to the tone of The Next Generation, but series producer Robert Kurtzman says the show will be pure #Resistance agitporn, and that that's all by Patrick Stewart's demented demand:

In Jan. 23, CBS All Access will debut "Star Trek: Picard," a series in which Stewart reprises the thoughtful, cultured, bald starship captain he played for seven seasons on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and in a string of four feature films that ended in 2002. The new show is different from its predecessor in nearly every respect -- texture, tone, format, production value, even the likelihood of characters dropping an f-bomb. That's all by design. Stewart's design.

When a producer isn't interested in taking credit but in preemptively affixing blame, that's a sign the project is a disaster.

I can't wait until Bond 25 tanks too. The bonfire of the IPs will be glorious, glorious!

You can't spell "Identity Politics" without IPs, Hollywood decided.

May they go all go broke and be forced to give hand-jays under bridges.

Patrick Stewart is just bad, never liked him, he ruined Dune, just overacting and being all MR ACTOR all over the place. Master Thespian!

And TNG, never liked that either. The characters seemed to be drugged up, there was a certain gauziness and artifice about the whole thing.

Guess they did't want people to be all manly. Manly men.

I am glad the series is dying and Roddenberry's son can go fuck himself along with that RSC second-stringer clove stalk Stewart.

Political art is a contradiction in terms because it is basically propaganda by another name.

Even if you agree with the slant of the propaganda, such as U.S.
WWII stuff, it is most generally bad art even when done by such masters
as Frank Capra or Ford. Mission to Moscow is such a movie as well.

Posted by: whig at January 14, 2020 05:38 PM (EUDB2)
All art is political, somehow. The only rule for art is 'don't make shitty art'. If the political slant is making the art shitty, the art will be shitty. There are no other real rules.

(There is good political art, but you first of all need to be a good artist.)

83 I did a deep dive on the financials of the three new Star Wars films plus the two spinoff, Rogue One and Solo.

The bottom line financial number of net profitability of those films domestic take will be just under $400 million dollars.

They paid 4.5 billion for the rights to Star Wars and it's IP.

They will never turn a profit on the brand.

Posted by: Larry Vaughn at January 14, 2020 05:44 PM (O0xJu)

84 It may be more than identity politics. Most of the reviews I have watched of the new SJW Star Wars movies have panned it for two reasons:
* SJW nonsense
* Bad stories and fucked up handling of multi-part series.

Same for Dr. Who - that the stories suck balls and they can't manage continuity to save their lives.

I don't know, I haven't seen any of them. But based on what I have seen *about* them, almost all of the excoriation is two-fold. They aren't just preachy, they fail as movies and stories, especially when they go multi-part.

SJW crap makes for bad movies, and I suspect that bad writers, directors, actors, showrunners, etc. also use it as a crutch because they're basically incompetent.

They are hiring people not because they are masters at what they do, but because they are part of the right identity groups (aka friends of the people who are telling them who the right identity groups are.)

It's ironic, because Hollywood generally just hires their friends anyway, but have lost the ability to pick those of their friends that don't suck.

99 The Rise of Skywalker was okay, maybe even good compared to all but the first three movies. However, The Last Jedi was so monumentally bad that it ruined all good will for the series. Judging Skywalker compared to other Star Wars movies is like wondering why no one wants to see Bill Cosby as an all-American dad anymore (there is more to it than the quality of the film). I'd say the lesson is get woke, and it will piss people off for more than 18 months.

Also, Rogue One was all about watching Darth Vader kick ass for 2 minutes at the end. If Disney wants to make money, it should make movies where Vader kicks ass and people run from him Freddy Kruger style. We are used to one surviving girl getting the best of Freddy, so everyone is happy.

109 Here is a thought, why not create new series with fresh concepts instead of sucking on the dead bones of Hollywood serials. My guess is that the money is drying up for Horrywood due to FANG and tech sucking it dry of ancillary revenues.

Digital streaming has pretty much killed the record companies and radio profits, cable channels are faltering, and movies have largely become costly big extravaganzas. Even Netflix and the like have relied on old TV shows on demand bundled for convenient binge viewing such as The Office and Friends.

People talk about the 1950's as an era of conformity forced on society in the West as a reaction to the late unpleasantness of WWII and the Cold War. The climate since 2000 has far exceeded the 1950's as a chill on artistic endeavors.

113 I'm pretty happy that, despite some relatively harmless and idiotic race-swapping of some characters, my beloved Witcher show wasn't hamfisted with its SJWness that the source IP could really support.

The Witcher is about issues that are relevant to modern society such as racism and "justice" however the are presented to the audience in such a way that it's not beating you over the head telling you at every opportunity that you're a bad person and should feel guilty for your very existence.

I was concerned because the show runner has a history of being #woke but the show itself seemed to keep true to the source material for the most part. I understand why they had to introduce the main character's main romantic interest early in the story - even though some people got butt-chafed at it (people who only played the video games and not the books).

Star Wars can go mount a cactus for all I care. It's never really been a compelling universe to me - everything presented in such stark black and white with absolutely no room to question the nature of a character. I always feel like the best types of stories are the ones in which you start to question if the "good guy" is really good, and the "bad guy" is really bad. There's never that question in Star Wars. Ever.

191 Another random thought-- Palpatine, as a character, sucks.

He's boring. He's endlessly repetitive. Most of his scenes are slow, talky, and static. He's not fun to watch.

Darth Vader was a successful villain, because at the outset they didn't explain anything to you. Little mentions here and there, but he was just the boogeyman in a mask, and he did stuff.

Then Lucas had to make him 'redeem' himself, so Palp comes in as the villain in ROTJ. And all the liabilities of that character go through the next four movies.

And, being out of ideas, they bring him back to close out the series, and he's still dull, boring, a tedious. Big fail.

What I always hated were episodes such as Wolf in the Fold or For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky, because you know Scotty won't be convicted of murder or McCoy will die of his rare blood disease.

And The Trouble With Tribbles really does not hold up well. Very little of TOS does.

224 141 I recommend Patrick Stewart's episode of Ricky Gervais' "Extras."
Posted by: BeckoningChasm

Yes, that was good, Stewart playing a very realistic version of himself -- a narcissistic over-acting pervert.

But the most amazing episode of "Extras" was the Kate Winslet episode, not because of its quality (it was actually the least funny episode of the whole series) but because it 100% accurately predicted what would soon happen in real life:

In the episode, Winslet plays a 1940s nun being persecuted by the Nazis. Off-camera (within the show), she reveals that she's bitter about never having gotten an Oscar, so she did some research and discovered that the only way to guarantee an Oscar is to do a Holocaust/Nazi film with you in the lead role. So she agreed to the stupid nun script (the show within the show) solely to finally get her that coveted Oscar.

Two years later, in real life Kate Winslet took a role in The Secret," a Holocaust/Nazi film in which she is the lead character-- and guess what happened -- she got the Oscar for it!

Later, after winning, in interviews she revealed/joked that the only reason she even took the role in The Secret was because that episode of "Extras" gave her the idea that it might be a good way to score an Oscar.

Ann Coulter once pointed out that in order for a Hollywood actress to get an Oscar, first, she had to play a whore.

Shortly after I read that observation by Coulter, Nicole Kidman was in "Moulin Rouge" and won an Oscar.

Coulter did point out all the actresses, who had won after playing a prostitute. As I recall, it was a pretty impressive list.

266 80, Ideally, art, like politics, is downstream from society. When truth, justice, beauty, and what is right is determined by politics rather than society, it prevents art from having enduring value as political issues fade quite rapidly over time. For art to be enduring beyond its era, it must reflect society's enduring values rather than the transient politics of the era. Venus DeMilo is still around even as the Greek society that enabled it has crumbled to dust and few even understand the era in which it was created. Ditto for the Mona Lisa, Wagnerian operas, and so on. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is still a good film even though it reflects politics and the Senate frozen in the New Deal era.

While any art will reflect the society around the making of it somewhat, warping it to make politics the message rather than good art makes it transient by default.

Exurban is a newish word - I remember hearing it 20ish years ago, because I lived there.

It basically goes Urban -> Suburban -> Exurban -> Rural

The exurbs are the low-density, semi-rural ring around the suburbs, but before you hit real, sparsely-populated countryside. This is also called the "RUI" in recent years - the "Rural/Urban Interface" that ain't really either. This new term I have usually heard in combination with fire. Exurbs are a huge wildfire risk out west because they're huge with low population density and little management because it's basically rural but not quite.

I've read all Agatha Christie's detective stories at least once (and most of her other stories). She was the Master.

I finished watching Marple recently and started watching David Suchet's Poirot. Poirot is just excellent - it's like David Suchet as Poirot materialized from one of her novels.

As for Marple, the first Lady that played her looked like her but sucked. Marple was not mischievous, and the show was a bit too woke. But then they changed the actress. Although she didn't look much like my conception of Miss Marple, she fid a much better job. She was more like the character in the books and the show apparently got over its wokeness.

That is the biggest problem with Hollywood, Music, and the Arts in general.

No one is creative, because all the money goes to the same, derivative works of the previously profitable works. No one is creative, because original does not pay. Look at TV, how many shows are copies of the previous?

Conners. Hawaii 5-O, Magnum PI, SWAT, etc.

After Cosby passes, expect a new Cosby show, maybe with Theo as the kindly, hip Grandfather?

No, you don't want that. Fucking Whedon would screw that faster than a nekkid 8 year old. Enjoy the memories of good shows before H-wood got their second crack at them.

I've missed every single boot, reboot, reimagining SW, ST, DW... don't miss any of it. Doctor Who has a whopping 7% audience score on RT? Wow, just wow. DW started going PC/SJW crazy when Smith was still a Doctor, and totally went off the deep end with Capaldi. Whittaker is just them pissing on the corpse and dancing around the May pole. Think of how bad it really has to be at this point to lose its audience to single digits? The mind boggles.

This was one of the problems - they did drag her out a bit further than she could go, and then had to turn it on it's head and make her the believer when they replaced David Duchovny with the T-1000.

It makes for some fun ways to watch an episode, though: try to spot the moment Scully does something bone-stupid that will move the plot along by creating danger. Key moves are:
* Leaving her gun out of reach
* Taking a bath or shower
* Being led astray by an ill-doer.

For bonus points, drink every time she says, "I"m a medical doctor!" or "I'm a scientist!"

Still like it, though

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at January 14, 2020 05:40 PM (WI7YS)

I watched about half of Lady Doctor's first season. There isn't just one problem. To start, the writing had gone downhill for quite a while. For what are fun, silly stories (with heart, which is what made the show endearing) it started getting silly in a bad way during Matt Smith's tenure and continued on through Capaldi. It was absolutely abysmal in the bit I watched of Lady Doctor, plus woke nonsense thrown in.

Then there's the fact that the companions, which are the audience surrogate in the universe, were boring as hell. I did not care about any of them. I think they went with too many. There were three damn companions, all introduced at once, and so none of them ever stood out as anything other than extra bodies on set in the episodes I watched.

Then you get to the Lady Doctor herself. I actually liked her on Broadchurch, but apparently outside of that she can't act. She's totally wooden and has turned the Doctor into a borderline mouth breather with her, ahem, performance. She's really, really bad.

All of that in one show is just a recipe for bad ratings. I think it could withstand one of those factors. Even the bad writing, since, like I said, many folks hung on through Smith and Capaldi's tenures when the writing was taking the downward turn. But all three? Big problems.

Company starts, has some success, takes loans to buy assets, makes money, buys more assets, gets bigger, gets bigger...

...Oil price drops, here comes bankruptcy...

...And they get bought out or broken up, and all the barges and ships and platforms get bought by someone else for a truckload of money, who makes some money off of it, and buys more assets, and then... You get the idea. Business Circle of Life.

Thank Prisney for that. Supposedly there was a lot of in-fighting on the direction partway through filming - which was probably the cause for some conspicuous editing. The Bob Clampett animated version would have had more nude hotties than the movie. Probably explains why Traci Lords was the princess in an early adaptation. As far as Disney+ sales, apparently a lot of folks dropped it immediately after the final episode of the Mandalorian. This is true, but Kirk and the gang were Star Trek, and a leader has to look like a leader in some way besides nameplate.

I also noted how they needed three or four characters to replace Spock - The warrior guy, the protege kid who was super smart, the woman who could sense people's emotions,... I think there were others at times, and all filling parts of the Spock character's attributes. It seemed sloppy to me, like kids changing things around when copying an essay off the web.

That's the problem with the woke left. Telling a story to convince or propagandize still requires you to respect your audience, to know what arguments will bite in and grip them and which will just mean they reject your entire work.

The woke left just reflexively hates the audience, and results in a story that isn't even enjoyable to the authors. The problem with the latter star wars wasn't just the woke elements - it was a story so badly constructed and laid out that it seemed to tell the story that women are totally crap at running a resistance! And the plot threads and characters are so poorly maintained that even the boosters can't accept all of the dumb elements.

I adore Kolchak. The problem with that series (beyond the fact that, halfway through, McGavin wanted out) was that you have to suspend a lot of belief.

Kolchak is in Las Vegas and meets a vampire. OK, I can accept that. Then he moves to Washington and encounters an apparently immortal doctor. Oooookayyy. . .I'll accept it.

But then he moves to Chicago, where every week he encounters the paranormal. At some point, you have to stop and say, "why is it only Karl Kolchak ends up with his ass in a sling fighting werewolves and aliens? Don't any other reporters in town get caught up in this?"

A Kolchak short story once attacked that problem by positing that Karl was "chosen" by higher powers to fight evil and that he would win because he was being "watched over."

in TOS resources weren't limitless. The Enterprise, a military vessel backed by the government didn't even have a spare set of dilithium crystals.

Prospectors were out breaking down remote planets under difficult conditions for profit.

And you needed a real space navy to keep the bad aliens from blowing you up.

There was a six months for $20 Starz promo on the Starz website a week or so ago. It might still be available if you go to the website and click around until the promo pops up.

I heard it differently. The new producer came in and wanted to change the show, and also write off Erin Grey. Gerald whats-his-name fought this and insisted that Grey be brought back (though she was in a diminished role).

But he lost. The show was changed and it lost lots of viewers.

At least that's the story I heard, I think maybe from the YouTube channel RetroBlasting.

One sci fi/fantasy series of books that I love but have never been done is Zelazny's Amber series. I understand why it really couldn't be done decades ago but now with CGI it's very doable. It would make a great miniseries. Probably a bit too long for a movie or a movie trilogy, though. The Amber series is a fun read,

There was no plan for the show, which is why it just meanders.

It comes to pretty much a non-ending.

It's concept is interesting, and some of its execution, which can all be captured in the first couple of episodes. The rest of it? Meh.

710 Just piling on Stewart. I agree with every everyone said above about him. That British accent is supposed to make us forget what a bad actor he is.

May I reccommend the following Youtubers after Stewart's show comes out. "The Critical Drinker" + Bowelstrek.

I have no intention of paying money to a streaming platform to see someone insult me. I'll just let those 2 above tell me.
Posted by: Mr David J Lewis at January 14, 2020 07:02 PM (VYwSh)

I don't know if the acting is any better by Stewart, but you might want to look him up in I, Claudius where he plays Sejanus - he even has hair, or some hair.

He's diddling Tiberius' heirs wife while eliminating the other heirs to the throne, then with her help kills the son. Finally he asks Tiberius for his son's widow's hand in marriage, but Tiberius offers the woman's daughter instead.

So he goes back to the lady and puts this forth as the plan, to a rather poor reception.

712 how is a movie that makes a billion dollars a failure?
---
The billion dollar value is overall ticket sales. The theaters keep a lot of that. One of the stories that came out about The Last Jedi was that theaters were forced to keep it on their biggest screens for four weeks if they wanted it at all, and Disney got 40% of ticket sales which was a large amount at the time.
Overseas ticket sales are even worse as there are more hands in the pot taking a share (EU VAT, looking at you).
So if Disney only gets 40% of that billion, but spent $300 million on the movie that was in theaters, plus half that on advertising, plus some amount on footage that was thrown away (apparently one version of the movie had Matt Smith as the main villain, a character totally unrelated to emperor Palpatine), they come out behind.
And they're trying to make up or the $4 billion they spent on the rights in the first place.

The original 'The Prisoner', with Patrick McGoohan, is a short series which makes it better than most. It was oddball enough to be entertaining.

716 >>>One sci fi/fantasy series of books that I love but have never been done is Zelazny's Amber series. I understand why it really couldn't be done decades ago but now with CGI it's very doable.

not really. I just reread the five books. There are a LOT of monsters and a LOT of bizarre fantasy landscapes with like mountains sailing over the earth like tall ships and lots of massed battles between knights and aliens and manticores.

I guess you could do a very stripped down version of it, which might work, but... there would be so much CGI that it would be too expensive.

I guess you could just mostly do the family intrirgue angle, and have the "shadows" all look pretty much like earth (or Goblin Canyon in California), and throw in just a couple of monsters. I guess that could work.

Posted by: Ben Had at January 14, 2020 07:18 PM (vU/Go)

721 TBH I think I was wrong to say you can't do amber. You can. But it would have to be an adaptation where you greatly reduce the number of monsters and limit the number of settings and keep alien-type settings pretty simple, a couple of CGI backgrounds and then just stuff that avoids looking too far into the distance.

The main family is super-powered but their powers are increased strength and nearly limitless healing, which are not expensive. The "moving through shadows" thing could be made somewhat cheap, but again, you just couldn't have people moving through a dozen worlds in an episdoe or two.

Posted by: ace at January 14, 2020 07:19 PM (PbpT7)

722 The Prisoner was basically a huge in-joke: Patrick McGoohan's previous series was Secret Agent (or Danger Man, depending on what country you're in).

McGoohan quit Danger Man and his producer talked him into doing The Prisoner. That's why Number 2 is always trying to find out why Number 6 quit.

Posted by: filbert at January 14, 2020 07:19 PM (NiXyF)

723 >>>but again, you just couldn't have people moving through a dozen worlds in an episdoe or two.

....unless, of course, you show limited CGI animations of weird alien worlds before settling on the world you want to get to, which of course looks very much like British Columbia, where it's cheap to film.

Dr Who was at its best when Douglas Adams was the script editor, during the Tom Baker run.

737 Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - saw it - surprisingly not super terrible. I mean, it weren't great, but it wasn't nearly as woke as the Last Jedi. It just seemed a little tired, and there were a bunch of hanging threads that made no sense...obviously extensive re shoots and a bunch of crap cut.

Star trek - nuke it from orbit, it's the only way. Beyond wasn't bad, but Discovery is absolutely abysmal.

Dr. Who - who cares about her lady parts, the story sucks.
She can't stay in character from one episode to the next - like they have no idea who the doctor is supposed to be.

That reminds me of a line from "Galaxy Quest" -- which, IMHO, is the best "Star Trek" movie, hands down. It's when Alan Rickman's character climbs out of the crashed spaceship at the San Diego Comicon, and the guy on the PA shouts, "GIVE HIM A BIG HAND! HE'S BRITISH!"

Or another, spoken by "Guy", Sam Rockwell's red-shirted security guy: "Don't you people ever watch the show?"

Drake's RCN series might also be a good bet. It even has two female assassin types, without being in the least woke.

It is basically Aubrey and Maturin series in space, with Maturin being a female aristocrat who's family was wiped out by politics by "Aubrey"'s father

You probably would need a good set of actors and writers for it. Drake likes to have borderline psycho and full psycho character in the mix.
