CARB will lower the allowable amount of emissions these machines can produce this year, with an eye toward zeroing out all such emissions by 2022. Other local governments have been less patient, passing or proposing immediate bans that have Earth-saving potential

Journalists Resource admits that gun buybacks don't work.

In other words, buybacks are kabuki theater for the masses.

He was arrested on Wednesday on a charge of using a computer to seduce/solicit a child.
The church told Channel 9 Logsdon was never alone with children, and that leaders were shocked when they learned about his recent arrest.
Channel 9 also learned Logsdon was on probation after serving 13 years in prison for second-degree murder.

The 2005 bankruptcy reform (thanks, Bush...) and its nearly-airtight rules regarding non-dischargeability of student load debt was a profoundly bad piece of law.

Bankruptcy protection needs to be extended to student borrowers. It really sucks that now, unlike then, that means that taxpayers take it the shorts (thanks, Obama), but the way that bankruptcy laws are written for student loans is shockingly bad.

Bankruptcy has to be an option. Plus, as an added benefit, student loans will hit credit card-like interest rates and lending will dry up. Lenders will suddenly care about your major and your grades. This is a good thing. If you want something to be cheaper, then quit throwing money at it. College costs will crash if this happens. A lot of colleges will go the way of Antioch, a fate they richly deserve.

I used to work in the consumer bankruptcy business. As I recall it (this was 1996 to 2004), the only types of debt that were 100% undischargeable under any circumstances:

- Federal and state income taxes
- Student loans

...Having said that, I kinda like the idea of student loans becoming dischargeable. I assume a lot of colleges (such as Oberlin) would take a long-overdue bath as a result. Also banks will be less likely to give out these loans... which could result in more young's choosing alternative routes to independence, such as vocational schools.

So there could be a silver lining on this cloud...

They did. Obama decision. Bad Obama decision. But it's going to come out of our taxpaying hides anyway. Underwater people with marginal employment and useless degrees aren't paying anyway and the garnishments probably aren't going to get back to 100%, and we're still digging deeper every day. We're screwed no matter what, so we might as well try to fix it.

Make it dischargable and get the government out of the student loan business in one bill.

In the fine print, there are no restrictions on my use of it, except for one: I am not allowed to use the credit line for any type of expenses related to higher education. No prohibitions but that one.

I am not sure what all the controversy was about. There was only kind of an anti-Trump thing, one visible RESIST poster. The rich v poor thing was not heavy handed, and not really Joker's deal anyway.

The only part that seemed like it might be controversial was that Bruce Wayne's dad was kind of a dick.

55 It's fun watching the Democrats start to panic, as it dawns on them that Bernie is going to win Iowa and New Hampshire, and has an excellent chance of getting the Democratic nomination.

Biden is losing it, Warren's popularity doesn't extend very far outside the faculty club, Bloomberg and Steyer are shoveling millions into a dumpster fire, and Buttigieg - let's just say that running a homosexual will not encourage black turnout (as is doubtless noted quietly in conversations among Democratic professionals).

Bernie may well take it - and the more openly the Democratic Party apparat tries to block Bernie, the more disgruntled his supporters will be.

And this is a recipe for complete electoral disaster for the Democrats in 2020 - we will have the first blowout election in thirty years.

I'm thinking of changing my voter registration to Democrat, so I can vote for Bernie in the Oregon primary.

I was doing some housework today and had on some 1960 episodes of "What's My Line?" for background. For those who don't know, this was a game show where some famous panelists would try guess the guest's occupation. If the guest was famous, the panel would be blindfolded. The game was hosted by a newsman called John Charles Daly. He was a war correspondent and general-purpose newsman for a long time. I know nothing about Daly's politics. He was married to Earl Warren's daughter, though, so "liberal" would not be a shocking conclusion.

Regardless, they had Billy Graham as a guest. This is a brief chat they had:

Watching old programs shows just how different things were, and how much we have changed as a country over the past 60 years. I cannot think of a single mainstream newsman today who would ever put forward that statement. Not only anticommunist but also pro-religion. If the recent unpleasantness with Iran has demonstrated anything, it is that, should any of our contemporary newsmen be in a similar position, they would have excoriated him for stoking the flames of discontent within the noble people of the communist world, and had created a geopolitical faux pas by going to Berlin in the first place.

I'm coming up empty on trying to think of a contemporary newsman who would say anything like this (admittedly not during the news, but in a different venue), let alone do so as if such a statement was obvious but still needed to be said. It's sad. It's enraging. It's humiliating for our culture. Our newsmen - indeed most of our culture figures in general - are scum. We deserve better than them. It fills me with a witch's brew of sadness, hate and contempt.

84 Saw Knives Out last night. I liked it. I liked it a lot. I'm not sure quite why. Plenty of plot holes, and a soupcon of wokeness, just a little, though with some good pushback ("So, how's your SJW degree coming along?"). I think it was that it was very much like watching a play. Topnotch cast, topnotch acting, intelligent writing. It kept my attention fully. It may not be for you. It is not a comedy, but was perfectly content to do implausible things because they were kinda funny.

It moved along well, had very distinct characters, and, I keep coming back to it, but the acting was just great. With a lesser cast, this would likely have been a disaster.

The protagonist is very attractive, looks a little like that Inception chick but with better eyes and cheekbones and lips. Daniel Craig, in a very atypical role, was great. Jamie Lee Curtis was great. Don Johnson, of all people, was great. And the others were great. One actress who was just a little less great, not sure who she was, looked a little like Kristen Stewart but wasn't, stood out by not quite living up to the standard. That's how good the acting was.

Biden has already been planning on losing Iowa and NH (a Hell of a plan) but I think he was counting on those going to different winners thus blocking momentum. Buttigieg could end up winning both with the Senators down for the count.

"1917" is EXCELLENT. Powerful, moving and involving. The much-hyped "filmed in one shot" gimmick is not intrusive at all except for a couple of early swooping pans that hit my vertigo button a bit. Nothing like the continuity challenge of "Dunkirk." I'm not sure I could say it was as good as "They Shall Not Grow Old," but it belongs on the shelf next to it. A definite should-see.

130 As for chemo, you never know how the science will change. A leukemia that was rapidly deadly 30 years ago is now being cured with high doses of oral ATRA (essentially a strong vitamin A, trans retinoic acid) and arsenic intravenously.

But of course I'd go with an oncologist's protocol. Those do change with research.

First day of unemployment starts tomorrow. I think when the law firm found my natural level the partner started his relentless criticism of me to try to get me to quit.

After I found and developed an argument against a 35 USC 103 rejection that could have been made two years ago and four office actions they fired me.

It wouldn't surprise me if they came after me to recover my pay, benefits and overhead. It's the sort of thing an MBA would think of.

The outcome of that will be known going into the convention.

I have come to believe that the Dem convention may be contested but perhaps not "brokered." Meaning that it will go beyond the first vote.

I liked it also because it wasn't like most of the rest of the dreck that comes out of Hollywood. Most of what they put out are comic book hero stuff, remakes, and sequels. It's nice to see a movie that has some originality.

I don't really like superhero, comic book movies anymore, but "The Joker" was an exception because it was so well done. Phoenix's acting was incredible.

I have read a lot of these blogs. They never really lay out the whole story. One guy was taking monster doses of vitamin c at 200 buck a pop several times a week. Plus some other stuff. But his most of his blog focused on how he cured his colon cancer with a raw diet.

I'm still alive BECAUSE I am on chemo. It's okay for people to decide how they want to treat their diseases. Just make sure you're okay with the consequences and remember; we all will die at some point from something.

Now the also-rans have reason to stay in until the convention. Since the party bosses don't get to vote in the first round, they still have a chance even if they lose the first few caucuses and primaries.

But that means the non-super delegates will be split between more candidates.

Which means its unlikely to have a first-round vote where one candidate gets 50%+1.

Which means the superdelegates will decide everything, again.

My shocked face is at the cleaners; I've been using it a lot lately.

Each cancer case is different. Some types of cancer are more treatable than others. It also depends on the stage, and the person's general health. My mom had breast cancer at the age of 82. She died at 93, not of cancer. The chemo made her nauseous for a time, but that was temporary. She had good quality of life for several years. Then at 92 or 93, she just got old and tired.

I know. I tried every diet recommendation. I was eating SnackWells and low fat this and that, and gaining weight. Finally I decided to try that ridiculous fad Atkins diet, just because it was different, and was all that was left. Started losing weight on unlimited bacon and burgers and steak.

At least the conventional wisdom is finally starting to turn. Kind of seems like what it took was a bunch of celebrities who used went LCHF and lost weight, not science as such.

There are so many reasons not to like it but I understand why people go back to it, it is part of our heritage. We will always have sports as part of out culture, it is ingrained. And when other entertainment options are poor, people will watch sports.

There are so many reasons to criticize the NFL one could do an entire thread on it. I think the number one change is free agency and the salary cap. Players move around so much it is harder to get invested in them. Back in the day, you knew who were Cowboys, Redskins, or Steelers. These guys played for the same team and city most of their careers.Another thing about the modern NFL that bothers me is that they seem to disdain their own fans. They keep plonking out these no name "hip" singers at major games that NFL fans don't even know. Like so many marketers, they are valuing the customers they don't have over the ones they do have.

Depends on where. A lot of places in the east of TX are too sandy to easily (cheaply) do basements *or* cellars. As Legally Sufficient said, geology is key.
(Sand and water being the two biggest reasons to not bother with basements and cellars.)

299 I bet a bunch that ten or twenty years ago we realize it was something else making us fat. Sure you can't eat carbs all day but I doubt it is that simple, at least for everyone. They eat a lot of carbs in Italy, Japan, India, and China. It has to be more complicated than grains equal bad.

Maybe with our particular New World diet and lifestyle carbs are the culprit? It has been pretty much proven that low carb diets will help many lose weight. And if you are eating tons of processed crap with sugar, for sure that is a bad thing. But as a philisophical point, I wonder if we are missing out on other factors.

JMO here, but I would say it is not so much what you ban from your diet as it is what you include. If you look at Spain, Greece, Italy, and Asia, it is what they do eat that stands out. They eat a lot more vegetables and fish than we do for example.

Too many plays have penalty flags, and too many of the penalties are pointless. They review way too many plays. Play is interrupted far too frequently. Too games are being determined by adjudicators instead of players and play-callers. Defense has become extremely hard with various rule changes.

They likely mean well. I recall seeing an injured soldier chewed out by a nurse over smoking. He had all kinds of screws in his legs and an apparatus around the leg. She basically told him in front of everyone that if he did not stop smoking he would never get better. I didn't understand the value in that but she probably thought she was doing the right thing.

Of course if you are a professional, meaning well is not enough.

Apparently my dad invited my mom over to his place for a game night while they were courting and they played Risk. He took her down. She barely got a turn. She flipped the game board and left and swore that she would never have the game in her home. She stuck by it.

He taught my brothers and I to play it anyway. We took the world map off the wall, segmented it into regions, etc. and used colored beans as markers.

363 Had an interesting day today. Out the door at 0700 to attend an automotive-related swap meet at the Legion post on Meridian road, not far from here, and then on south to the little farm town of Coolidge, near the Casa Grande Ruin, to shop a local flea market there. Came away with a bag of pecans, a bag of blood oranges, and a bag of grapefruit. The oranges and pecans are yummy. Have not gotten into the grapefruit yet.

Then drove north on Hwy 87 from Coolidge to Fountain Hills, and toured a car show there, and had lunch. Then back to AJ via the Bush Highway, with a brief stopover at the Butcher Jones recreation site on Saguaro Lake. Then I got under the Studebaker lark, and with help from my house guests, I successfully got the brakes bled, and took if for a couple of short road trips in town, with the brakes working fine. Engine is pretty cold-blooded until it is very well warmed up, but that's the damn-fool RBS carburetor for you.

Not really. You can have fun and do cool things within a normal life. I'm not 100% cut out for it, one reason is I didn't have kids, so there is a whole section of normal that I'll never experience, so I might as well stay in the life that robbed me of a somewhat normal life to begin with. I don't regret my decisions, but I realized that if I completely quit then the sacrifice was mostly for nothing. I guess its the old saying that I made my bed so I gotta sleep in it. I'm also good at it, so its easy. It was way easier when I was younger, that's for sure. There are no rules saying you can't have fun in a normal life, a lot of people do. You have to do what the fuck YOU want to do. Its that simple. Life isn't one shot and done. If something fails it don't mean hand over the fucking keys. It means do something else, try something else.

I honestly didn't mean that to sound as depressing as it did. More of a warning, and call to action. There are people who will press you to be "normal" in order to validate their own beliefs and life choices and try to paper over their own mistakes and regrets. This is a path to mediocrity and lack of fulfillment. You do have to figure out what you want in life and work toward it. I'm just now getting on that path, late, but better late that never.

She is probably starting to question the whole idea of royalty by birth alone. I know way back when the Brits would give away officer rank to nobles and those who could provide an equipped company. But once you got in the service, they watched you like a hawk and promoted mainly on merit. The real dumbos were not promoted and were put somewhere they could do the least amount of damage. They knew that in the end you don't win wars on blood lines. They were also smart enough to assign the best NCO's to shepherd commanders who had no business in the field.

We won't even get into the music gear. When I started pulling back a wee bit I had people saying well maybe you should sell off some guitars, how many do you need? Need??? I have used Quiet Anger and Silent Rage, as tools for a great deal of my life. Seriously, since I was about fifth-grade, or damn near that.

The determination that those internally contained explosions fueled, were what enabled me to survive the horrors of youth, and emerge as a surviving adult. Not unscathed, not unscarred. But yet still, not only alive, but thriving.

And with at least valuable remaining trait.

448 Howdy all. I've got a couple of questions for The Horde.

Going to work yesterday it was icy as heck in Northern Illinois and as I was driving State straight into the grounds at work I tapped the breaks, started skidding and ran into the wrought iron fence. Actually as I was able to drive off of it I ran over the wrought iron fence.

Talk to the insurance company and they wanted to know if I wanted to have the car repaired, it's a 2009 Mercury Mariner, or to take the cash after the $500 deductible. As a car has a little bit of rust I'm thinking I'll take the cash and have the damage and the rest repaired all together and that might save some money. Does that make sense?

I think rabbit's pretty awesome anyway you cook it. Never understood why Americans don't eat more rabbit and why it's not more available in grocery stores (same for duck). It's a quick growing food animal as they breed like, well, rabbits and have a short gestation period. I guess Bugs Bunny cartoons really did a number on this country.

One of the three historical restaurants in Williamsburg, VA serves pan fried rabbit. Whenever I've eaten there, I've always order the rabbit.

We seem to agree on food Rick. Duck is incredible and very much worth it if you know how to cook it. A whole duck takes some doing as you have to render a lot of fat but a duck breast is an easy gourmet meal if you just check online how best to cook it.

I get that rabbit has little meat but you make up for it in volume. I think it's expensive because it's considered a 'specialty food'.

I also like duck (cassoulet is a favorite dish of mine). I can only get duck at my local farmers' market and that is very expensive. Organic bullshit, ya know.

I used to go to the Russian Tea Room on occasion. One time, during the winter, I ordered their roast duck. It was funny watching the other diners' faces. They got their chi-chi orders on oversized plates, which made their 'dinner' look very small. My duck dish was literally overflowing the plate. I could see people pointing at my plate and talking quietly amongst themselves. Probably wondering why my plate was so full and their plates so empty.

It's that white meat/dark meat divide. Don't get me wrong, chicken breasts have their place, but I prefer chicken thighs. But for many people that's a no go as . . . dark meat. But to me, that dark chicken meat, along with the dark turkey meat, is much more flavorful.

467 It is hard to say one dish is my all time favorite but I would say Peking Duck is my favorite to order in a good restaurant. I love the history, presentation, and work involved. If done right you get all the flavors from fat to acid, from simplicity to the sublime. Sometimes when it is over I get a bit sick to my stomach and swear I will never do it again.

The thing about that dish is the cook has to really care and the small things matter a lot.

I find that eating a whole chicken breast gets tiring/boring. I prefer to take my chicken breasts(bought on sale) and make cutlets out of them. I can do a plethora of preparations for chicken cutlets, from Italian seasoning with tomato sauce and mozzarella to a walnut crusted cutlet with a brown mushroom gravy. Cutlets are very versatile, the versatility only limited by one's imagination. I also don't get people who pay top dollar for store bought chicken cutlets. A knife and a tenderizing mallet is too much work, I guess. When I buy chicken breasts on sale for $1.99 a pound, I can make a shit load of cutlets from them and freeze them. Then a quick dinner is easy peasy.

You can definitely save money just by learning to cut up a whole chicken. And I also love cooking chicken cutlets I also use pork as a replacement for veal in my scaloppine or veal Parmigiana dishes. The pork and even chicken saves money and works well in the dish. And I have had bad luck getting really good veal cutlets over the years.

483 Funny, brother #2 and I were just reminiscing about his hunting with dad, and are talking about having a rabbit dinner with the entire family. He said he has over a dozen in his freezer, just needs a few more to have enough to make a meal for all of us.

Our favorite way to make it: dredge pieces in flour, with some salt and pepper, brown in a little olive oil and butter. Place in roasting pan, meanwhile, deglaze pan with red wine. Pour that over the rabbit and bake in oven til done. Easy, simple, and amazing!

It is good and once I made it, I made it many times later. It was one of those spur-of-the-moment creativity things that became a kitchen staple.

My mom served that to us once for some reason. I guess she didn't like it either because we never got it again. I rarely eat mashed potatoes but out whole family is good at making them. . I still have an old school potato masher. It is not so hard to boil water really.

Some frozen veggies are pretty decent, peas or corn, e.g. But veggies in a can generally suck.

But I did find something interesting. Was watching America's Test Kitchen and they were doing a taste test of sauerkraut. In the past, I bought the kraut in a plastic bag in the refrigerated section. But their tasting stated the canned/bottled stuff is better. So I bought a can of kraut (for reubens). The canned kraut is definitely better. It seemed 'crisper'. That was the complete opposite of what I expected. Now canned kraut is one of the few canned vegetables I buy. But I'll never buy canned potatoes or canned asparagus, to name two.

some people can cook and others can not. For some reason most people think they can cook but few would say they are talented musicians. It is one of those life things, people get used to what they grew up with and that is that. There are about five things everyone thinks they are good at for some reason. Cooking is one, driving is another. I think we can all guess some of the other categories.

If you ever get invited to a Thanksgiving dinner by someone who can't cook you will be surprised really. It is not a big deal, just interesting differences. If they invite you that is more important than the food by a long shot imo.

If you ever go to a bake sale or pot luck you will see what I am talking about. Try seven different plates of brownies and five are card board. I appreciate that I was blessed by a mom who could cook.

corn bread is another one if you want to see if anyone can cook/bake For many the corn bread is supposed to be dry and that is why you eat it with beans or whatever lol.

As for canned veggies, I kind of like the canned short cut green beans. You have to add some pork fat and I only eat them around the holidays but they are ok.

When I pan fry corn (stripped off the cob), I use butter, salt, pepper, chopped jalapenos and sweet red pepper. I liked the flavor so now I also add some slightly pre-cooked chopped jalapenos and diced sweet red pepper to my cornbread.

Ah, saw a cool cornbread recipe a long time ago - really good. It involved adding a can of mexican corn, then pour off about a third of that. To that third, add crumbled browned breakfast sausage and shredded cheese. Pour the regular batter into a hot iron skillet and top that with the meaty cheesy goodness. Eat with a fork.

534 I think Lidl is an Aldi competitor. They are moving into the US like Aldi. It will be interesting to see what happens as there is so much competition right now on the lower end and higher end. Not long ago it was the big super markets like Safeway, Piggly Wiggly, H-E-B, Giant, etc.

Now you have dollar stores doing well, Wall Mart, Target crushing it, and you have Wegmanns and Aldi and Lidl. It will be interesting to see how all this pans out. There are a lot of consumers in this country but wow, there are a lot of grocery stores too.

542 The thing with Aldi's is that the stores are pretty small. They don't always have what you are looking for. Also, the cashier helps with restocking. They may have it but it's in the backroom and not out yet. The stores are run pretty lean which lowers your cost.
lizabth. I bough their version of B&J's Cherries Garcia, didn't like it. The chocolate chips tasted fake, because they are.
Still shop there a lot. Best prices on dairy around. I especially like their organic milk. Prefer organic since it tastes better. Yep, I'm a milk snob.

Hunting and stuff: dad was an insurance salesman- not really an outdoor guy- so we didn't have outdoor adventures as kids. Most everything I learned that turned out to be worthwhile came from the Army and then just being a person out on my own.

First in line at 9AM, 16 minutes later I am loading up my truck. But my Aldi is a small-town Aldi, and very well run.
Only thing I dislike about it is its later opening hours. Wish they opened @ 7AM.
Oh, and I recently discovered how much better their organic spring green salad mix is than Walmart's. All sorts of delicious little lettuces in there. Highly recommend.

Small, well run with many outstanding house brand equivalents to well known brands.

Not a huge selection, but a family on a tight budget is able to make nutritious meals at a low cost.

Anything that they sell that comes from Germany will be top of the line, and outstanding quality.

If you pay taxes you do have a dog in that fight. "college loan forgiveness' was an Obama directive (illegal of course) to allow students and former students to default on government backed college loans after which the gov would pay the colleges. In effect the taxpayers are paying off those deadbeat loans.

571 I think Lidl is an Aldi competitor. They are moving into the US like Aldi. It will be interesting to see what happens as there is so much competition right now on the lower end and higher end. Not long ago it was the big super markets like Safeway, Piggly Wiggly, H-E-B, Giant, etc.

Now you have dollar stores doing well, Wall Mart, Target crushing it, and you have Wegmanns and Aldi and Lidl. It will be interesting to see how all this pans out. There are a lot of consumers in this country but wow, there are a lot of grocery stores too.

Surprising for such a low margin business. They do a lot to fight for my business, but all I care about is location and very rarely a specific item that one store does better like seafood

If you pay taxes you do have a dog in that fight. "college loan forgiveness' was an Obama directive (illegal of course) to allow students and former students to default on government backed college loans after which the gov would pay the colleges. In effect the taxpayers are paying off those deadbeat loans.

That is one Obama program I have been waiting on Trump to kill.

Yep but to recuse themselves from voting would require them to be an ethical person, which none of them are.

Plus IIRC warren and sanders both have already said Trump is guilty so by democrat standards they should not be able to vote because they don't have an open mind.
