A Little of This. A Little of That.

This is chuckle worthy. See a dog protesting everyday things.

The following story comes from regular commenter Shibumi. If you see a stray cat with colored paws pick it up and take to the nearest shelter.

Cat with painted paws aren’t just cooler than their unadorned counterparts. Nor have they recently strolled through a freshly painted zone.

According to Megan Sorbara from the Naples Cat Alliance, these adorable felines aren’t just victims of fashion; they’ve also survived the trauma of being dangled as bait in a dog-fighting ring. Their paws are colored in various hues so spectators can easily place bets on the order in which these innocent animals will die.

Annie is a rescue who has been with us for 15 years. She’s cute and loves to tease you with her tail. All is well until you touch said tail. Bring bandaids. A great new year to all. Semper Fi, Bobbigbear.

She looks adorable and a character all rolled into one. A Happy New Year to you and Annie as well. Thanks for submitting her story and photo.

Hi MisHum,

They look so much alike. After seeing the "woman yelling at white cat" meme all over the internet for several weeks I finally could no longer resist pulling out a photo of my guy, MacArthur, to share. Sadly, he is no longer with us but he'll always be remembered in our family as one of the best cats ever. He was a young kitten strolling along a roadside in rural Indiana when I walked past with my Labrador Retriever. They sniffed each other and Mac then confidently followed us all the way back to the cabin. There was no question that he would come home with us after the weekend was over and he and the dog had a special forever bond. MacArthur was a pro at selecting photogenic locations for poses. Here's one of my favorites where oblivious to the snow outside he's sunning himself in a vintage A.M.C. Flash wagon.

I tune in to the pet thread almost every Saturday and very much appreciate the great job you do putting it together with both humor and tenderness. Thanks, corn and beans

Well thank you very much for your kind words. MacArthur certainly does resemble the dinner cat of that fun meme. Did he speak southern? J/K He was lost and then found. Nice story thanks for sharing.

Friends lost this year. Bianca was 13 and prettiest dog I’ve ever had.
And Sabine was 12, best dog ever. Loyal. I miss them. - Robert

It sucks to lose a pet. It really sucks to lose 2 pets in a year's time. They certainly were beautiful creatures. I hope you can find another wonderful pet.

If someone asks me why I looked haggard and sleep-deprived, this is probably why. My wife and I share a king bed with these three. Meet Bella, Maggie and Katie – the reason for nightly sleeplessness, and for having to contort ourselves to accommodate three 75+ pounds bundles of yellow, furry, shedding love. - Dan

I withheld your last name and location Dan. Hope you don't mind. Yes, your lack of sleep is understandable after viewing those 3 spoiled puppies. Thanks for sharing.

Jake- A good cat. I sent a photo a few years ago but hit send before I wrote anything. We had Jake for just over 20 years and he passed just before Christmas. He got to sleep under the tree a few more mornings. He loved shrimp and sushi grade tuna. We miss him. I love reading about all the pet morons. - Martha

First of all, our condolences on your loss. Pets die way too young even at age 20. Cool looking cat. I hope your'e around today to tell us what type of award he was wearing there. Thanks for your submission.

Rascal and Stetson.jpg

Greetings,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and here's to a blessed New year.

This is our newest editions, a bob-tailed named Stetson, we think he's about six months old and his "brother" Rascal. Yes, they don't look alike. We adopted both of them after finding them living under the pavilion of our church. Apparently, the mother of Rascal decided that the mother of Stetson was not taking care of him and she "adopted" him and took care of him. Rascal is also about six months old, not a huge fan of human contact but he's coming around, Stetson on the other hand is quite the affectionate type. He is hilarious to watch run because at the last part of running he hops like a rabbit every time. I am far from being a cat person, but they're bringing me around.v/r Mark (Sua Sponte)

Oh no, you're not a cat person. No rescuing feral kittens and giving them a home. Nope, not a cat person at all. Good luck with making Rascal a more affectionate cat. Nice story with a happy ending. Thank you so much.

Hiya,
The orange hussy is Miss Irene Hobart who, as a kitten, sounded like the Tasmanian Devil of Looney Tunes fame. Hobart is the capitol of Tasmania. She suffered from serious ear polyps that caused the beastly sound. Surgery took care of them. The handsome one with the roses is Reverend Henry Dewayne Hambone, Jr., a/k/a Dewey or Snakes. My Dad grew up in Northwestern Maryland and the West Virginia cousins were of the snake handler persuasion and my father and uncles called their cousins 'snake eaters' under the assumption that once the snake handling was finished, snakes were what was for supper. I'd like to think that the kind of preacher Dewey would be would handle snakes with great finesse. Various iterations of the snake theme include "Snake's alive!" And "Snake 'n Bake!" -SNAB

Great camera work, you have captured some very interesting poses of your cats. Sounds like they have extra personality. Thanks for sharing today.

Hi, That Deplorable SOB Van Owen here.

A little after Labor Day I sent in a picture of my BIL's new Bull Mastiff pup Cheyenne. At the time she weighed barely a couple of pounds. Thought I'd send a before and after follow-up picture. The second one was taken on Christmas Eve -- she is now 40 pounds of bouncing, wiggling, all big feet puppy. I caught her in a rare solemn moment -- she knew I had treats in my pocket.

And who can refuse a face like that a treat? She is truly a joy to be around.

Sorry the photo is so late Van Owen. Somehow your email got stuck in my promotions folder. Better late than never. My has that puppy grown. Treat possession is a key for great photos. Thanks for sharing with us.

Here is a Chinese grandma living in a multi story apartment building, whose cat jumped out of her balcony to the one below. Naturally, the only thing to do is dangle her 7 year old grandson out the balcony, on a harness, with a bag to put the errant cat in to.

13 As usual, a fun-filled Pet Thread - Thank You, MisHum!

So, earlier this week, mrs ibguy inadvertently left her mostly full coffee mug on the side table, and Maddie helpfully drank it for her.

I was concerned, so called the vet (who knows her well) asking if we should be worried. She said no, only that it might make her hyper.

I agree; I thought Aussies were better than that. Meanwhile, before The Troll Who Must Not Be Named shows up to natter about the lack of pets in the White House, the rest of us can thank DJT for signing the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act (the PACT Act) into law on November 25, 2019. It is now Public Law No. 116-72 and imposes the penalty of imprisonment for up to 7 years as well as fines on violators.

35 I have been bit twice by Gary. And we got him because hit bit a previous owner. But those days are behind him. He had a mild case of resource guarding. He's learned to share with two other dogs. And he bit when startled. You would think you had his attention, when he was focused on something else. He could be hard of hearing.

And this would get me kicked out of the springer groups. The last time he bit me, I hit him twice with a Christmas wrapping tube. I was pissed because I hadn't even touched him. We've had no problems for over a year and he is definitely my dog.

43 Not quite a pet,

I watched a red tailed hawk this morning riding the updraft from the cliff to the south of my living room windows. He had some sort of small rodent, either a mouse or a vole in his talons. He would ride the updraft, not moving a feather, snacking all the while. Then he would dip a wingtip and go screaming past the window to the north. He would turn south and ride the draft again and snack.

He barely clapped his wings in the 4-5 minutes I watched him.

48 Hadrian: Glad Leo seems on the mend. Hopefully he will fully recover.

Right now, my tuxedo cat, Tiger, is beating up his bed on one of the cast iron registers (we have hot water heat) in the dining room, demonstrating to a grey and white cat on the side porch what he is going to do to that interloper if he was allowed out. Tiger can see the other cat because the register is directly under the window overlooking the side porch. It's laughable because the idiot has no front class and that outdoor cat would make mince meat of him.I

We seem to have acquired three outdoor cats -- the gray and white one, an orange and white one, and an orange tiger. I've started putting bits of food out for them -- day time only because I don't want the raccoons, rats, or skunks visiting any more than they already do. The XO isn't screaming about me giving them food yet. In fact, he put a few pork roast scraps out for them this morning. I've got my eye on the orange tiger in particular. They've got shelter on the side porch; the entire house is between them and the North wind. And right now, there's an old sofa out there, too.

65 Nurse, my last choice is always to board a pet. Afraid they will think they have been abandoned. We had cats that were outdoor for the most part and had a neighbor come by to feed twice a day while we were gone. Worked out well. She would also give lovies if she saw the cats, which was not every time she came over.

I can't speak to the option of supplying an indoor cat for the duration.

67 Nurse, if you know a teenager you can trust for a once a day check-in, that would be my vote. Five days is pretty long for a litter box not to be emptied. Also food wise it would depend if kitteh is a chower or a nibbler. My observational experience is that being comfortable in familiar surroundings at home is preferable to most cats than being boarded.

70 family got a puppy. Nine year old dog didn't get along with it. Nine year old dog gets taken to the animal shelter.

Was in a similar situation with cats. FatCat had been with me for (counts... removes shoes... counts some more...) 13 years when this sweet little stray kitten adopted my back porch for shelter one winter. Of course I took her in & slowly introduced the critters.

Long story short: after a year, they were *still* battling for dominance-- not just play-fights-- and one of them had to go. Broke my heart, it did.

FatCat was my buddy and damned if I'd forsake her after all those years!

NewCat was very friendly, so found a new home for her right away.

71 Should I leave her with an appointment xtra litter box and tons of food, pay a teenager to come feed her and have out with her a bit every day or board her

Most cats prefer familiar surroundings + a pet sitter to being boarded in a vet's office or someone else's home. OTOH, kittehs don't always care for an inept pet sitter-- here's an oldie but goodie from Henri Le Chat Noir, "The Cat Is Sat":

81 Notsothoreau, if I read your post correctly, your Springer Gary last bit you after being surprised, and you thought he may be hard of hearing.

I had a Springer years ago, and like many of his breed, Max had ear issues. Their big floppy ears serve to keep the ear canal damp and dark, ideal conditions for the growth of all sorts of evil flora and fauna, some of which will damage their hearing. You likely know all this already, but if not, ask your vet about ear care for Springers.

87 Oh my gosh, I can't watch those Sarah MacLachlan commercials without tearing up. Most times I have to walk out of the rooms

But hubby will watch them with our 2 Yorkies on his lap and say to them something like "Aren't you happy you live with Mommy & Daddy?"

Sometimes our littlest Yorkie will bark at him when he says that - almost like a reply.

(can you tell we're empty nesters?)

BTW . . . After a difficult pregnancy, our daughter has been induced today, our son-in-law is by her side, and our second grandson should be arriving within the next 24 hours. Our daughter was in labor 42 hours with her first pregnancy, so we're praying it's not that long this time.

96 'Nother nice post, thanks MH. So many great critters!

After several nice days and even nice nights, cold and snow hit overnight. The cats are most displeased. Wolfus (I think) on an earlier thread asked, 'why displeased? they snuggle down where it's warm inside.' Yeah, but they also like to go snoop arouond outside, especially first thing every morning - which is fine with the litterbox-cleaner - but they did not find the wet snow and cold to be accommodating. *scoop scoop*

Charlie the yellow fellow woke me up at 5 the other morning (some morning, it's all a blur) - not with his usual wandering-around-yowling act, but with serious screaming and growling. Thought at first maybe a couple of the cats were facing off.

After much groggy barefoot exploring by flashlight, in a cluttered corner, I tracked him down to the east window, behind the curtain, looking out at something I couldn't see in the dark. Our faithful defender.

And we had a flock of around fifteen turkeys visit yesterday afternoon. Never saw that many, and haven't seen any for many moons. Not pets, but fun yard ornaments.

The damn things will also dig under your fence. We did not have coyote problems (thank God!) but our neighbors did. Two things will help: bring the sheep into shelter at night and, if you can, get a burro or donkey to put in with the sheep. Those burros/donkeys are great guardians of sheep.

105 Had same dog issue. Had elderly Shetland Sheepdog and acquired a German Shepherd puppy. Sheltie had major issues with GSD. Vet said that's what happens when two alpha dogs share a home. GSD was fine with the Sheltie, but the Sheltie would pick at the GSD constantly. Every few months or so, GSD would clamp her jaws down on the Sheltie's head and the Sheltie would squeal like a stuck pig. It never once occurred to me to get rid of either.

Had cat problem, too. I acquired a grey tabby female kitten. About six months later, the kids dragged home a half grown male orange tabby. The grey tabby hated the orange tabby until the day I had to have him put down. (Kidney failure)

110 "last part of running he hops like a rabbit every time."

If Stetson's owner is lurking here, take him to the vet and get those joints checked out. That gait is how my vet diagnosed my dog Nemo as not completely recovered from his ACL surgery and it indicated some type of damage according to her. He needed doggie PT to help with it.

Posted by: SDN at January 11, 2020 07:21 PM (nR7zo)

111 SDN:
Stetson is a Manx and according to the run down about them, their back legs are longer than the front legs, so Manx cats move in a
sort of bunny hop. That doesn't preclude them from jumping -- in fact,
the breed is known for its ability to successfully make great leaps. When he's outside "hunting", usually a bug or questionable leaf, he reminds me of the arctic fox that jumps straight up in the air and then down onto its prey.

113 Just as 111 said, Stetson indeed looks like a Manx. They have stump tails, almost no tails, typically, and squatty bunny legs and they run like rabbits. If you ever come across a stray Manx, snag it. They are the friendliest cats you will ever see and are almost dog like. A Manx followed me home from a walk one night and we had him for 10 years until his unfortunate death from cancer. A Manx will make a cat lover out of you.
