A Long, Long Time Ago, On An ONT Far, Far Away....

Happy Friday everyone. I wonder what will happen tonight? We had a good thread last night, roaring along nicely, when Ace stomped the ONT. We woulda hit 1000 easily if not for that. Oh well.

So what's planned for this weekend? I'm going to see the new Star Wars on Sunday. It doesn't look that great, but a group of friends and I haven't missed one in years, so I guess we're going to play out the string.

Might as well talk about last night's BBQ and get it over with. I'm not going to really cover any details, the daysiders have been doing that all day, but there are a few ONT worthy bits:

In any event, it's nice to have America acting like America again. We'd much rather be friends (or at least peaceful trading partners), but if you won't allow that....

We should have settled Iran's hash 40 years ago, but lets not forget that there are bigger issues in the world. The New Colonization: China Is Building Enormous Self-Sustaining Chinese Cities All Over The African Continent. I still think China is going to overextend itself and collapse (I'd be sure of it if I believed that we as a country had the balls to give them a push), but maybe not, and either way China is shaping up to be the big challenge of the next few decades. That's why, in the metaphorical world geopolitical pub, I'd be buying India drinks all night and telling her how beautiful she is. That's right baby, lets go back to my place and hang out, I've got everything you need to have a good time.

I made many of these same points to someone on Twitter the other day. You can read the short thread here. Sure, there are some trolls on Twitter who are just nasty, but IME a lot of the lefties there wither away and don't respond if you hit them with a barrage of facts. Like here, or in the pinned Tweet on my homepage.

The Yahoo Group prefers the gladius to the pilum.

Of course. Because the pilum's primary use wasn't as a killing tool, but to punch through the enemy's shields and bend, making it impossible to either remove the pilum or use the shield. So the enemy would have to drop the shield, leaving them open to some stabby stabby with the gladius.

Well, Dave, it's weird that you would ask, but to me the job description:

"Within delegated authority, the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration Officer will be responsible for the following duties:"

Sounds like a staffer who assists Blue Hat troops returning from a peacekeeping deployment turn in their weapons, reverse the mobilization process (demob) and reintegrate into their home communities.

I don't think if this was a move to hire people to take away Americans' guns that they would advertise it this way or advertise it period.

Regardless I think we ought to either charge the UN higher rent for the property in Manhattan or ask them to leave the country and find a home elsewhere. But not because of this ad.

87 If today's New York Times had been around in 1945:

Reichsfuhrer Himmler was beloved by his men in the Schutzstaffel. He was well-known for his consideration for his soldiers, going so far as to arrange their marriages, and to provide presents on their children's birthdays.

Dapper, and witty, Himmler also had a spiritual side. He had a had a lifelong interest in occultism, interpreting Germanic neopagan and Völkisch beliefs. He also enjoyed classical music and opera.

88 Ace, if you're still here, IMO the best tartar is chopped caper in good mayo, with a shot of lemon juice.
If you go to the international aisle at the grocery, you can get very affordable capers in either the mexican or italian section, via Goya or Sun of Italy.
The nonpareil variety is not worth the price for making a condiment.

All these little African and Asian nations:

1 - Let China build giant infrastructure projects on our territory and agree to pay them from the massive profits we will make.

2 - ???

3 - Profit!

China knows perfectly well that Sri Lanka, Namibia, Tanzania, etc don't have the expertise to make a port profitable, so when little nation can't pay up, China controls themselves a nice port.

Where is all this going to go?

177 The odds that Trump has his private security do sweeps for bugs and phone taps at Mar-a-Lago are somewhere in the vicinity of 100%.

And I'd imagine that the computer security there is good enough to give Bob at NSA some real fits.

Seems to be working. Two things prove this:

a) The airstrikes.

b) The wailing screams of Democrats left out of the process.

And with that, I'm going to have two scoops of vanilla ice cream. Sign of respect.

There haven't been any other presidents elected without political or military experience. Trump is unique. As others mentioned Washington and Grant or military without being elected politicians. 276 Geez, sometimes, ya just find a gem.

Just scored a New In Box, Select Walnut fore-end for a vintage Remington 870 12 ga.

Hit the "Buy It Now" button, for $20, plus $15 shipping.

Now, keep in mind that the Select Walnut stock and fore-end sets commonly sell for $250 to $400.

I've got the butt-stock to go with the fore-end.

Now comes the difficult part. Much work with paint remover and a 22 pt. checkering tool. Gotta get these down to bare walnut, so I can then build up a multi-coat, rubbed oil finish.

I really don't care for that shiny, plasticky polyurethane that Remington used on their guns in decades past.

Still, this is going to end up as the prettiest 1966 vintage Riot Gun, ever! (and yes, that's a contradiction in design goals, but what the hell, over?)

313 I recently learned that three of my direct ancestors were at the Battle of Trenton (although one, a New Jersey ex-Quaker in the militia died of disease in camp days prior).

The other two were on opposing sides. Henry, was a 16 year old grandson of a German emmigrant who died during the voyage to Philadelphia. The Captain of the ship sold the families linen mill equipment for passage money. Henry's father was then 16 (1742), he was contracted as an indentured servant by the same Captain to German families North of Philadelphia were he joined the army opposite Trenton.

In Trenton, my other ancestor, a 24 year old Hessian conscript had faced horrific conditions aboard a transport ship sailing for almost three months before reaching New York harbor. He would be captured, serve as farm labor for a year with the same families Henry came from. Paroled a year later he was shipped to South Carolina whereupon he promptly deserted to the Americans.

Henry would serve four years of the war, at age twenty it may have been time to move on. His son would witness the British attack on Fort McHenry.

The one at Ellington Airport (formerly Ellington AFB) in Webster, TX flies the smaller Predator Drone, along the U.S./Mexican border.

Pity, they're flying the unarmed version of the thing.

Speaking of which. I wonder which Dems we can call an "existential threat to America".

I mean fair is fair, right? If it's not out of line to call a neo-Republican an "existential threat" that can't be beyond the pale, right?

So, who do you think the left would be like "Well, we called Donald Trump an existential threat, so I can see that they might think X might be one too." And have it totally be a civil agreement to disagree?

Yeah, I don't think so either.

I truly believe presidents like Clinton and Obama read the daily polls before their NatSec daily briefing. EVERYTHING they do is based upon optics. (Remember all those selfies Obama had, showing him in some significant place looking serious and reflective?)

To divert from Clinton's impeachment, he had a cruise missile strike an aspirin factory (or was it a baby milk factory?) instead of bin Laden.

Trump, on the other hand, is not seeking anyone in the media's approval. He is doing what's right for the Country knowing full well the brickbats coming his way. As that tweet from the other CT senator (not Danang Dick), he bitched about Trump doing nothing about Iran a couple of days before the strike then complained after the strike that Trump actually did something but it was terrible and threatens WWIII.

Politicians care about polls showing how much they are liked. Orange Honey Badger don't give a shit about that.

447 That UN job posting is like a lot of leftist writing:
It uses English words and I understand what the words mean, individually. But strung together as they are in that ad, they are effectively meaningless.
But, this being the UN anyone hired under this program would likely sit around in New York, or in hotels in other high-priced cities in the world and TALK about taking guns away from Americans. No one who works for the UN would DO anything, especially anything dangerous. They would talk about it, they would direct other people in doing it, they would give speeches about how it should be done, but they would never DO it.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger at January 04, 2020 12:08 AM (r65fV)

I have helped some people (mostly relations) and also have been pushed to do more than I should do at times. I don't think it's necessary or wise to say "Never help anyone!!!", BUT one has to be careful and mindful about what you are doing at all times.

I suggest a very good book called "Boundaries", both for difficult relatives and for other people you may try to help. It describes how to define limits on ones own responses, and how to apply and enforce these limits. A simple part is that at the outset, one must let the one you are helping know what you will do, and what you won't. AND you need to be mentally and physically prepared to cut the link whenever those limits are breached.

First time I saw her in that outfit, I was embarrassed for her.

And I grew up around bikini clad lasses in San Diego, CA. Know quality when I see it.

Slave girl Carrie wasn't below average. She was EXACTLY average. And that was the problem.

Starlets are supposed to be above average. Elsewise, they play "character" roles.

Unless their parents were Hollywood Royalty, that is. (see, horse face Tori Spelling, etc.)

Guy goes to the movie, he wants his fantasy rocked by ABOVE AVERAGE up there on the screen.

Barring "above average", INTERESTING features works, too. See, pre-surgery Zwellinger or talent-less Jennifer Lawrence. Not necessarily "beautiful", but stare-worthy faces, all the same.

Average and Ordinary. Or worse. That was those guys High School Prom and likely, Marriage.

Give 'em a Movie Starlet. Fantasies exist for a reason.

U-Haul announced Monday that it will start rejecting job applicants who use nicotine starting Feb. 1 in 21 states.

States in which the policy will be enacted are Michigan, Arizona, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.

Aside from seeing statements regarding U-Haul's nicotine-free hiring policy, job applicants in those states will be questioned about nicotine use. In places where testing is allowed, they will have to consent to submit to nicotine screening in the future in order to be considered.

The company says this move is part of its commitment to promote a healthy workforce.

Say you're an average, chub-faced schlub in High School. Maybe a defensive lineman on the football team, 'cause you're 50 lbs heavier than the average.

Your Dad is a Plumber, age 50 and weighs 260. And you're built just like him, but only 210 lbs. as a High School Senior, but you know you'll be his weight by time you're his age, too.

Carrie Fisher is in your H.S. class. She's not "gorgeous", but she's damn well not UGLY, either.

If you can cull that cow outta the herd, you're in tall cotton now, damn straight'cha are.

Which Moron or Ette for Supreme Court Justice Nominee?

Not a Popularity thing. And they do NOT have to be a "lawyer", either.

Who has the shit to ascend to The Bench?

I know that I damn sure do NOT.

Nor do many (not all) of the highly degreed academics, here.

Logic, sense, HUGE grounding in classic American Civics, the logic of the Founders and more.

Put your best Thinking Caps on, and reduce it down to ONE nominee.

And with that, I'll see you all tomorrow EVENING.

520 Hmmm, just saw a study about a possible odd viral epidemic in Hong Kong. The story blurb refers to it raising fear of a SARS outbreak.

Now, I don't wanna be the crazy conspiracy theorist, but riddle me this:

You have a popular uprising amongst a significant portion of the population of a particular province. They have to be reigned in because this is spreading to your other provinces.

Do you:
1) Stomp on them militarily? This is your first instinct, but there are a LOT of eyes on this and the last time you stomped on a protest this violently, it created a generation's worth of martyrs.

or

2) Try out some of that biological warfare stuff that would do a decent job of getting people off the streets- worried about getting sick?

Trump will never get any praise in his lifetime, even after his death. The only praise might come from future historians, but that's it. If Trump were to be assassinated tomorrow, the champagne corks popping in this Country would sound like Chicago on any weekend.

Why not both? Biological contamination with a "quarantine" that has to be enforced by the military. Anyone you want to disappear simply got sick and didn't recover. Had to burn the bodies to be sure contamination didn't spread. That sort of thing.

529 Ya know, I just luuurv how the lefties think we are trying to get into a war with Iran when Iran has been at war with us since 1979 and their takeover of our embassy in Tehran. Attacking an embassy, much less actually seizing it, by any diplomatic standards or treaties, is a Act of War. I guess all those 'Death To America!' chants emanating from Iran are just rhetoric to them. The Left are stupid, stupid people (as proven by this Rainmando clown).

Iran will get what they want, and all the unintended consequences which go into getting the war they want, not the US. We don't have to have boots on the ground to take out the fragile infrastructure of Iran (so hold off on those body bags).

I looked at a different car insurance a few years back (AAA) They had a plug in for your car that would keep track of speed, time driven, etc and give you a discount for "being good" I asked if my rates would go up if I was being bad, and they said no.

And you can't get pregnant the first time....

Depends on the animal. House pets are vulnerable. Semi or fully feral cats are wary enough to survive.

We don't have coyote in my 'hood, but only because that niche is filled by fox.

567 Dave Barry is unfunny. Worse than droll. His schtick is is to pose as an observational comic from a planet where everyone thinks they are perfect in their self conceived objectivity. He sees equivalence in every arguement, in that eveyone is equally wrong, and that all wrongs are equally wrong.

He's never wrong because he doesn't ever take a position. From that perspective his writing doesn't have a point. He's worse than other Never Trumpers because he has no shame.

I am very happy to recommend Dr Shiva to everyone that is in need of help to fix his/her broken relationship and marriage problem. When I found Dr Shiva, I was desperate in need of help to get my ex lover back. He left me for another woman. It happened so fast and I new nothing about the hole situation. He just dumped me after 3 years without no explanation and i believe she did a mooring on my boyfriend. I contacted Dr Shiva through his email and explain my problems to him and he cast a love spell to separate my boyfriend from the other woman and get him back to me. Shortly after he did the spell, my boyfriend came back to me and beg me to forgive him and felt horrible for what he just put me through. He said that I was the most important person in his life and we are planning our marriage. You can reach Dr Shiva for help on his email: reunitingexspell@yahoo.com. Dr Shiva is truely gifted and he alone can solve your relationship and marriage problem.

572 This is my testimony about the good work of a man who helped me. My life is back!!! After 8 years of marriage, my wife left me with our three kids. I felt like my life was about to end, and was falling apart. Thanks to a spell caster called Papa Ork who i met online. On one faithful day, as I was browsing through the internet, I was searching for a good spell caster that can solve my problems. I came across series of testimonies about this particular spell caster. Some people testified that he brought their Ex lover back, some testified that he restores womb, some testified that he can cast a spell to stop divorce and so on.? There was one particular testimony I saw, it was about a woman called grace, she testified about how Papa Ork brought back her Ex lover in less than 72 hours and at the end of her testimony she drop Papa Ork e-mail address. After reading all these,I decided to give papa a try. I contacted him via email and explained my problem to him. In just 3 days, my wife came back to me. We solved our issues, and we are even happier than before. Papa Ork is really a talented and gifted man and i will not to stop publishing him because he is a wonderful man.? If you have a problem and you are looking for a real and genuine spell caster to solve that problem for you. Try the great Papa Ork today, he might be the answer to your problem.? Here's his contact::
