The Saturday Night Joke

Diary of a snow shoveler

December 8 - 6:00 PM
It started to snow.
The first snow of the season and the wife and I took our cocktails and sat for hours by the window watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven.
It looked like a Grandma Moses Print.
So romantic we felt like newlyweds again.
I love snow!

December 9
We woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape.
What a fantastic sight!
Can there be a lovelier place in the whole world?
Moving here was the best idea I've ever had!
Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like a boy again.
I did both our driveway and the sidewalks.
This afternoon the snowplow came along and covered up the sidewalks and closed in the driveway, so I got to shovel again.
What a perfect life!

December 12
The sun has melted all our lovely snow.
Such a disappointment!
My neighbor tells me not to worry- we'll definitely have a white Christmas.
No snow on Christmas would be awful!
Bob says we'll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I'll never want to see snow again
I don't think that's possible.
Bob is such a nice man, I'm glad he's our neighbor.

December 14
Snow, lovely snow! 8 inches last night.
The temperature dropped to -20.
The cold makes everything sparkle so.
The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and sidewalks.
This is the life!
The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again.
I didn't realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I'll certainly get back in shape this way.
I wish l wouldn't huff and puff so.

December 15
20 inches forecast.
Sold my van and bought a 4x4 Blazer.
Bought snow tires for the wife's car and 2 extra shovels.
Stocked the freezer.
The wife wants a wood stove in case the electricity goes out.
I think that's silly.
We aren't in Alaska, after all.

December 16
Ice storm this morning.
Fell on my ass on the ice in the driveway putting down salt.
Hurt like hell.
The wife laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel.

December 17
Still way below freezing.
Roads are too icy to go anywhere.
Electricity was off for 5 hours.
I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm.
Nothing to do but stare at the wife and try not to irritate her.
Guess I should've bought a wood stove, but won't admit it to her.
God I hate it when she's right.
I can't believe I'm freezing to death in my own living room.

December 20
Electricity's back on, but had another 14 inches of the damn stuff last night.
More shoveling!
Took all day.
The damn snowplow came by twice.
Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel, but they said they're too busy playing hockey.
I think they're lying.
Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they're out.
Might have another shipment in March.
I think they're lying.
Bob says I have to shovel or the city will have it done and bill me.
I think he's lying.

December 22
Bob was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white shit fell today, and it's so cold, it probably won't melt till August.
Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to piss.
By the time I got undressed, pissed and dressed again. I was too tired to shovel.
Tried to hire Bob who has a plow on his truck for the rest of the winter, but he says he's too busy. I think the asshole is lying.

December 23
Only 2 inches of snow today
And it warmed up to 0.
The wife wanted me to decorate the front of the house this morning.
What is she, nuts?!!
Why didn't she tell me to do that a month ago?
She says she did but I think she's lying.

December 24
6 inches - Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel.
Thought I was having a heart attack.
If I ever catch the son of a bitch who drives that snow plow, I'll drag him through the snow by his balls and beat him to death with my broken shovel.
I know he hides around the corner and waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at a 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I've just been!
Tonight the wife wanted me to sing Christmas carols with her and open our presents, but I was too busy watching for the damn snowplow.

December 25
Merry freaking Christmas!
20 more inches of the damn slop tonight -Snowed in.
The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil.
God, I hate the snow!
Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation and I hit him over the head with my shovel.
The wife says I have a bad attitude.
I think she's an idiot.
If I have to watch "It's A Wonderful Life" one more time, I'm going to stuff her into the microwave.

December 26
Still snowed in.
Why the hell did I ever move here?
It was all HER idea.
She's really getting on my nerves.

December 27
Temperature dropped to -30 and the pipes froze; plumber came after 14 hours of waiting for him, he only charged me $1,400 to replace all my pipes.

December 28
Warmed up to above -20.
Still snowed in.
The BITCH is driving me crazy!!!

December 29
10 more inches.
Bob says I have to shovel the roof or it could cave in.
That's the silliest thing I ever heard. How dumb does he think I am?

December 30
Roof caved in.
I beat up the snow plow driver, and now he is suing me for a million dollars, not only the beating I gave him, but also for trying to shove the broken snow shovel up his ass.
The wife went home to her mother.
Nine more inches predicted.

December 31
I set fire to what's left of the house.
No more shoveling.

January 8
Feel so good.
I just love those little white pills they keep giving me.
Why am I tied to the bed?

What were the odds? Never mind it's math and it's Saturday night.

Every local newspaper announces the first baby born in the new year, but the story is even bigger in Carmel, Indiana. Dawn Gilliam and Jason Tello weren't expecting their twins to arrive for another seven weeks, but children have a way of stepping on your holiday plans. The twins were born on different days, in different years, and even in a different decade.

Joslyn Grace Guilen Tello was born at 11:37 p.m. on December 31, 2019 at Ascension St. Vincent Carmel and her twin brother, Jaxon DeWayne Mills Tello, was born at 12:07 a.m. on January 1, 2020.

The Saturday ONT normally doesn't have The Quotes of The Day. However this quote is just too go to pass on tonight.

Although 2019 is in the rear view mirror, let us take a look at some of the most bizarre stories.

Crimes, unfortunately, happen every day across America, but there are some you read about that leave you scratching your head. Ranging from dancing with lions to police pursuits involving toy trucks, here are seven of the weirdest and most bizarre crime stories of the year.

Man in reindeer slippers attempts to steal woman's wheelchair
A man in Arizona wearing reindeer slippers managed to ‘dash’ away from this scene – but law enforcement caught up to him anyway.

Japanese robot dogs for friendship.

The dogs, known as Aibos, are companion robots made by Sony -- robots that don't necessarily do much apart from providing company and comfort. From a report:
Every Aibo -- Japanese for "companion" -- is manufactured identically, besides a choice between silver and white or a brown, black, and white version. They all have rounded snouts that include a camera for facial recognition capability, large, oval eyes to reveal their expressions, and a body that can turn on 22 different axis points to give them a range of motion. The owner decides the gender when they set them up, which determines the pitch of its bark and how it moves. They're cute. They know when you're smiling. And through machine learning and recognizing people with its camera, Aibos also shift their personality over time based on their interactions with people they spend time with. Soon, they become much more than a store-bought toy.

We have heard about the Mexican Cartels and their extensive hold on illegal drugs. Flying under the radar is their involvement in the avocado and lime crops.

THE VIOLENT SAGA OF MEXICAN CARTELS AT WAR TO CONTROL LIMES AND AVOCADOS
Narcotraffickers are transitioning into a new business space: high-end produce. They’re cornering the market — and as prices rise, bodies pile up

The son of the lime grower begged his father to quit his war against the Mexican cartels. He pleaded with him to disband his all-volunteer paramilitary army of avocado farmers and fellow lime growers. “Get out of this,” the son warned. “They’re going to kill you.” To assist his pleas, the son called upon the Lord to save his father. He placed a rosary around his father’s neck.

But his father wouldn’t listen. There was too much at stake. Too many of the rural locals now counted on him to protect them, to protect their town and to protect their farms. They’d also answered his father’s call-to-arms. So he couldn’t put down his shotgun. “Forgive me. I’m not going to stop, no matter what happens,” the father, 60-year-old Hipólito Mora Chávez, told the son, Manuel.

Of course, the unimaginable happened.

On December 16, 2014 — almost two years after Mora launched his armed uprising — Mora was talking with his men at a checkpoint at a road barricade. One of the first things they’d done when Mora declared war on the cartels was to barricade the roads in and out of their town. That day there had been newly intercepted chatter on the radio about a possible raid. They heard the order given over the airwaves: “Bring all of your weapons right now. We’re going to kill this son of a bitch.”

Meet someone who can literally say, I'd give my right arm for...........

Many people have two arms. Far fewer of them can say that they have one of their arms on a shelf by their sink. This 37-year-old guy is one of the few who can proudly show his amputated arm. Thanks to a helpful taxidermist and a hungry colony of beetles, he was able to turn his amputated limb into a unique conversation piece.

20 years ago, then 17-year-old Mark Holmgrem borrowed his brother’s motorbike. This decision would change his life forever. He drove so fast and crashed on the motorbike, which tore the nerves in his shoulder, which left his right arm numb and unmovable.

The ONT Musical Interlude

On this day: 4 Jan 1986
Irish singer, songwriter and bassist Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy died of heart failure and pneumonia after being in a coma for eight days following a drug overdose. With Thin Lizzy he had the 1973 hit 'Whiskey in the Jar', (their version of the traditional Irish song) and hits with ‘The Boys Are Back in Town’, ‘Jailbreak’ and ‘Waiting for an Alibi’. The groups 1978 album 'Live and Dangerous' spent 62 weeks on the UK chart. Lynott fronted several bands as a lead vocalist, including Skid Row alongside Gary Moore. A life-size bronze statue of Phil Lynott was unveiled on Harry Street in Dublin Ireland in 2005. via thisdayinmusic.com

This dope uses dope and is tonight's Genius Award Winner.

A Louisiana woman is behind bars on a felony drug possession charge after police discovered her methamphetamine stash in a small plastic container that was helpfully labeled “Dope.”

Cops responded Saturday night to a West Monroe residence after an unidentified complainant reported finding “suspected narcotics” inside the apartment, which is home to Candyce Neel, 41.

According to a probable cause affidavit, through “further investigation,” an officer found the “Dope” container with “suspected methamphetamine inside.”

Neel, cops say, left the apartment “prior to deputies speaking with her.” However, she was later arrested after being found hiding behind the residence. After being read her rights, Neel reportedly “admitted ownership of the suspected narcotics.”

30 Good live albums are rare. Thin Lizzy; Live and Dangerous is one of them. Kiss; Alive (1975) is another. Grand Funk; Caught in the Act as well. Also, Judas Priest; Unleashed in the East.

But there are a lot of crappy live albums out there.

If you're a Psychiatrist, you'll have your hands full at the Texas Mo Meet. I mean, we've got horses, cattle, guns, fire, knives, booze AND THE MORONS WHUT USES 'EM. Oh, and we've got cigars, too. Which are sometimes *only* a cigar.

If you're an Academic Doctor, you'll be very welcome at the Texas Mo Meet. I mean, we've got horses, cattle, guns, fire, knives, booze AND THE MORONS WHUT USES 'EM. I will eagerly await reading the White Paper to follow.

108 A Louisiana woman is behind bars on a felony drug possession charge after police discovered her methamphetamine stash in a small plastic container that was helpfully labeled "Dope."

I once helped convict a drug dealer. The issue was whether the methamphetamine, weighing scale, and pistol that the cops found in the car belonged to the dealer or not (there was also a passenger in the car).

I and two other people on the jury thought that there wasn't enough evidence to tie the items to the drug dealer, so we were holding out for acquittal, with the other nine jurors prepared to convict.

The meth (suitably sealed), gun, and scale were with us in the jury room, and one of the jurors suddenly noticed that the guy's name was written on the bottom of the scale, in flowing metallic ink.

Thirty seconds later, the vote was 12-0 to convict.

134 The "flying car" is just an autogyro. They have been around since the 1920's. The Bensen Gyrocopter made it into production, and sold quite well, but it was never intended to be roadworthy.

The Waterman Aerobile was a flying car, or roadable airplane, and a few units were and sold, so it was "produced". Actor Bob Cummings bought one, and used it.

But you cannot take off and land from roads, leastwise not legally. It would be a huge risk of collision, or secondary wrecks caused by gawkers. The fantasy of being stuck on a stalled freeway, and being able to limber up the rotors, and take off into the wild blue yonder will have to remain a fantasy. And if you had a VTOL-capable aircraft, why would you not just fly everywhere, and not use the roads at all?

That's important, right there. On a still night, you can go outside in ordinary cool weather clothes at -20° F with no trouble at all, for a little while. As long as you don't move around too much, or else you start becoming very aware of your clothes (which are now around 0° F).

If it's windy, don't bother.

139 So I was reading a novel by the guy that did Gorky Park, in fact it was the same series. He was describing a common picnic in Siberia where a group of friends would huddle around the fire, drink vodka and eat Russian tapas.

The Siberian vodka was extra high proof because it gets so bloody cold there. So this guy accidentally sets the bottle a bit too far from the fire as they sing, drink, etc. He grabs the bottle and downs it and is dead in seconds. The cold shocked his body so bad it was over.

227 The Pentagon apparently tried a classic trick with Trump - according to the New York Times, when they presented options on how to respond to the killing of the American contractor to Trump, threw in killing Soleimani as an option, merely to make the other options look reasonable.

Old, old bureaucratic trick.

"Mr. President, here are your three options:

1) Nuke Iran
2) Surrender to Iran
3) Fire a couple of cruise missiles at an empty building in Teheran in the middle of the night, so as not to hurt anyone"

The trick is to present two outrageous proposals, plus the one that you want the President to take.

Trump apparently had accepted one of the "moderate" proposals, and then changed his mind after the Iranians attacked our embassy, using their proxies.

But you cannot take off and land from roads, leastwise not legally.
It would be a huge risk of collision, or secondary wrecks caused by
gawkers. The fantasy of being stuck on a stalled freeway, and being able

have to remain a fantasy. And if you had a VTOL-capable aircraft, why

There's a neat strain of sci-fi that runs counter to the theme that aliens are all super-strong conquerors with superior intellect: humans are actually terrifying.

We are born with way too many teeth in our skulls, so we have to remove up to four of them so there's enough room in our heads. Infections from human bites can be deadly, even to other humans. We jump from airplanes and dive in arctic water for fun. We hike up mountains because they're there, and if we survive freezing to death, and a boulder pins us on the way down, we'll cut our own limbs off and walk to safety. Lesser injuries - like mere fractured bones - we can just heal from, in a few weeks.

And it's all because we live on Earth, a.k.a. Space Australia, where we build cities near fault lines and under volcanoes, in deserts, places that routinely get 40mph winds, places that don't get sunlight for months, and everything in between.

235 187 I saw 50 below in Fairbanks one winter. You can feel and hear your nose hairs freeze.

We took a mug of water, tossed the water up in the air. A portion froze into small ice crystals and hung in the air (ice fog). Of the remainder, maybe half hit the ground as ice chunks and half was still liquid.

I was going to try the same experiment with hot water, but decided it was too damn cold.

239 Oddly enough driving on paved roads at 30-40 below zero is not slippery, because the ice/snow is so cold that it can't melt at the interface between tire and snow enough to create the slippery surface.

Besides, your tires are frozen flat on one side.

251 I don't think I've ever encountered less than -25 below a couple of times. Don't really mind the cold all that much. I'd rather have 10 and dry instead of 40 and damp any day and every day. I'm in my 60s and I can handle 8-10 inches of snow with the machine pretty good. It gets old but not insurmountable.

I watch a lot of youtubers. One guy, a farmer, Millennial Farmer in West-Central Minnesota, in his latest video is snow blowing the farm yard with his tractor. But, a month ago he blew his back. He's hitting his sidewalk and in front of the garages with a shovel and he's using the shovel like a 10 year old, fast, real fast, too fast. The guy has probably a million dollars of heavy equipment and he doesn't own a walk behind snow blower. Everyone is commenting, you are going to die. It doesn't matter if you are a millennial or not. You are going to die.

Absolutely.
It's like 80 degrees in Phoenix (dry as a bone) vs. 80 degrees in most of the South on any given day (humid as all get-out). But with the cold, it just seeps into your bones faster when the humidity is up, no matter how well you're dressed.

Conversely, when I go to bed on a really dry cold night - even though it's not cold in the house - I'll run the humidifier in the bedroom for an hour before I go to bed and be warmer than if I'd bumped the thermostat up. 20% humidity feels a lot colder indoors than 35 or 40, because sweat evaporates more readily. I think that's it, anyway.

It's a nice way to think about humans, in the whole scheme of things. We're the ones who looked at terrifying predatory megafauna and said, "you know, in a few thousand years, that thing is going to be named 'Mr. Pancakes' and a little girl is going to be pushing it around in a stroller."

Fairbanks is only going to about -30 tonight, but in FBX the wind doesn't blow, so it doesn't feel nearly as cold as it does here by the ocean. There's always a breeze here, and with the water off the ocean, it feels nastier.

Imma stay indoors this fine evening.

Re the diet, it's going... okay overall. I would say I'm figuring some things out. I'm also eating a lot more salmon and steak, and been trying to avoid fast food more often. Ladyl. Just like bats "see" in the dark, by emitting sounds and zeroing-in on the reflected sound waves bouncing off the nearby mosquito..

Well, submarines "see" underwater by "listening" to various sounds put into the water by ships, other subs and live, undersea creatures. They can also emit their own sound waves ("..one ping only, Vasily"), but are loathe to do so, as that reveals their position.

But yeah, just like bats.

So, if you were wondering why Hogmartin was taking a nap while hanging upside down from he rafters at the Mo Meet, well, now you know.

Yup, its why I retired before I really wanted to.

I was a full time single parent (had full custody of my twins) and was teaching Sat Coms for the Navy in San Diego.

Next assignment? Needs of the Navy transfer (didn't even get to talk to the detailer) to a unit that would provide boarding teams to search shit in the Gulf. Essentially full time deployment. Even a Ship assignment would not have been gone as much.

Luckily, I could retire.

I saw a story that Gavin Newsome signed a new law, limiting everyone in California to 55 liters of water a day, or you get a big fine.

The response was that isn't enough water for to wash clothes and take a shower in the same day.

Remember, California Democrat legislators have been cancelling the building of new reservoirs for about 30 years now. Looks like it has finally caught up with them. The Democrat answer is to limit access to water, instead of increasing supply. And penalize anyone who objects.

The thing about stories like this is that I don't have to come up with a punchline, because those that are the subject of the story ARE the punchline.

Plastic scoop blade about ten by ten inches, shaped like a grain scoop. Even full of wet snow, it's not too heavy. Sidewalks and driveways, you use a snow-push blade. Pre-dates radar by a decade or two. Except for some truly exotic blue-laser prototype "radars" made in an effort to look down through the depths, radio-frequency radars are exclusively used for atmospheric and space search, from ground level up into the heavens.

Sonar, using sound waves, is used in the depths.

394 My theory on Epstein...

The pretty, young "lawyer" that was visiting him before his death was his reward for working with the Clintons.

Basically the offer was work with us, you get some fun and then, well, a clean ending to the party...Otherwise you get a lifetime of our people beating and raping the shit out of you...like that dirty cop that almost killed him (but didn't even though the guards let it happen....)

Posted by: 18-1 at January 04, 2020 11:42 PM (WdocV)

395 Pre-dates radar by a decade or two. Except for some truly exotic blue-laser prototype "radars" made in an effort to look down through the depths, radio-frequency radars are exclusively used for atmospheric and space search, from ground level up into the heavens.

Sonar, using sound waves, is used in the depths.
Posted by: Jim at January 04, 2020 11:34 PM (QzJWU)

Yes, it's pretty much the reverse of how it works in air. RF (radio, radar) doesn't get very far at all in water, but can propagate over the horizon in air. In water (the speed of sound in water is about 4x as fast as in air), sounds can travel for miles, and phenomena like convergence zones can refract it up away from the bottom and propagate it out several times like a radio signal skipping off the ionosphere.

Posted by: hogmartin at January 04, 2020 11:42 PM (t+qrx)

396 I'd agree with that.

Plus even though he'll be 43 at the start of next season I don't think he's going to go anywhere that won't let him be the starter.
Posted by: Vendette at January 04, 2020 11:33 PM (p

And unless they're hiring Belicheck too they would probably regret that. I think they work great together and Brady wouldn't be the star he is without his coach. Remember when Brady got injured they probably would have still made the playoffs that year with Matt Cassel if it wasn't such a fluke year where all the other division teams did insanely well. And then Cassel proceeded to do fuck all as a starter elsewhere.

He would probably do good but I don't think he would be the same threat he is in New England.

397 ..Did the early sonars emit pings and do ranging, or were they just passive listening systems like the listening horns they had for airplane warnings?

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at January 04, 2020 11:38 PM (LxWV7)

"ASDIC" was the late WWI development of what we now call Sonar. By the British, ol' chap.

It was always an emitter-listener technology, as it was used by various sub-hunting surface ships in order to find and fix their prey.

Only later when they installed the more refined versions of this tech on Submarines, did they develop the doctrine of NOT emitting sound waves into the water, but rather, passive listening and range-finding via the Doppler Effect.

Probably techies that moved here from the Seattle area. The relatively low cost of land and housing has been attracting tech companies here for decades.

Echo sounders have been around since just before WWI, but since early submarines were primarily submersible patrol torpedo boats (often conducting surface torpedo and gun runs), they wouldn't have used active sonar for targeting.

Surface ships had adapted echo sounding into ASDIC, as Jim mentioned.

421 hog... I know you can't talk *much* about it, but that what you can, the floor is yours.

What I find remarkable, is that up until well into the 1960s, the Sonar on the boats was pretty much the same (though much more refined) as it was at the start of WWII.

Then, with the advent of the Integrated Circuit era, WOW. Here comes the audio libraries, filter-matrixes, waterfall displays and all manner of other advancements.

I wonder if they had an audio file of the New Dawn and her 13"x13" prop and 2 cylinder diesel?

Back when my Old Man was still on Fleet Class boats, I could visit the Sonar Room (a tiny, curtained-off alcove), nearly at will.

Come the SN-592 (Snook), and that space became Secured, Off-Limits, and about 70% of all the consoles and displays in the Conning Tower were all hidden under heavy, fitted green vinyl covers.

And now, I cringe to even think of a TV crew ever being allowed belowdecks on one.

Family History....kinda related,
My Grandfather, an inventor by trade and farmer (so the family history goes) was suddenly pulled from his farm life to a Navy instillation on the east coast during WWII to join a work force trying to correct the multiple issues with the Navy's MK 14 torpedo. He was credited with improving the the detonator "pistol?" that blew the torpedo under the ship.

We were always told he farmed peas along the Rock River for Jolly Green Giant.

One of the flaws was in the "pistol" that was supposed to set off the warhead on direct contact with a hull. Because of odd design, plus too soft steel, plus poor machining by a contractor, well, no good. Maybe he helped with that.

Which caused the magnetic induction detonators to not detect the magnetic field of the MASSIVE STEEL SHIP dozens and dozens of feet above, and thus not kaboom the KA BOOM charge in the warhead.

Pistol.

Depth.

Induction-less.

Study this out. The Naval Bureau of Ships and Bureau of Ordnance had, since the Dreadnaught Era, become a vast, moribund, hidebound SWAMP of feather-bedders, Elitists, Ring-Knockers and otherwise all around Do Nothings.

The U.S. Navy fought its way out from UNDER BuShips and BuOrd, well before finding itself able to fight back AGAINST the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Krauts.

Given the fiascos of the Zumwalt, Ford, (non) Rail-Gun, Canceled Zummie Ammo, Littoral and other such crap it's pretty damn clear.

We're gonna have to fight THAT particular battle, once again.

516 Having learned to play electric guitar to "Fillmore East" by the Allman Brothers Band, I'd have suggested it for tonight's list had Teej not mentioned it first. AOP suggested another all-time great live album, "Waiting For Columbus" by Little Feat, from my list of faves. Lots of folks don't care for the Grateful Dead, but I don't give a shit what they think; "Europe '72" is a classic, as is their earlier "Live Dead" with "Bertha" and "The Other One", whence my nic is cribbed. Lou Reed's "Rock Roll Animal" opens up with "Intro/Sweet Jane" featuring Dick Wagner and Jimmy McCarty (iirc) from Mitch Ryder's band Detroit just torching the stage... Last, Alison Krauss Union Station Live at the Louisville Palace from April 2002 is terrific. Maybe even better than that.

Same for the Beatles.

Best ever? WHO CARES?

They both were huge, and they both will endure.

Show me the works of their critics that will stand the same tests of time.

There are bands I like, better. There are songs I like more.

But to not acknowledge them as greats is to plunge one's self into a deep, overly-critical denial.

Richard Bong might not have flown the most perfect approach in the pattern in his P-38.

But he killed more Japanese fighters than any other U.S. Aviator in WWII.

And Ted Williams might've been an asshole. But he still has the unbeaten Batting Average on record.

"This" doesn't necessarily negate "THAT".

And thus endeth the lesson.

A kinetic weapon at Mach 1.2 will create heat. Muchly. And like you said, likely to ignite every form of POL on board the vehicle.

A Mach 2.2 F-4 Phantom could create enough skin friction-heat, to *ruin* the polycarbonate canopy on an extended Mach2+ run.

The SR-71, at Mach 3+, had to be largely fabricated from Titanium, and it's paired front-canopy windshields were formed from laminated quartz panes, the only material able to withstand that level of heat for hours on end.

Speed is Hot. Always. And in Every Way.

This is correct. Immediate re-fuel at appx FL30, followed by rapid climb and acceleration to operational altitudes and speeds.

The JP-7 fuel required an entire FLEET of QC-135 tankers to support SR missions, worldwide.

That fuel was made specifically to resist "boil-off" at altitude, and was *also* the coolant that kept he leading edges of the wings from overheating.

After which, it served as a total-loss fluid in the SR's hydraulic systems, before it was consumed in the engines.

When the SR was outta gas, a "dead stick" landing was NOT an option. Cause it as also outta hydraulics, and thus no control authority remained at the stick or rudders.

That airplane was concurrent with the Gemini Program. Slide-rule math and design.

And we couldn't make one now on a dare.

557 I studied under a couple of Lockheed engineers who were adjunct profs. They had interesting stories. More intriguing, they would occasionally foist off some term-long project that clearly was inspired by what they were doing. When a software project is communicated to you as 'Let's say that you have to ID profiles of particular objects at various angles...', it kind of hints at applications.

561 I enjoyed the Bob Lee Swagger novels by Stephen Hunter, thrillers, Swagger was a Viet Nam sniper and gets into police/military adventures, anyway, one of the books had a scene where Swagger goes to a military base in Nevada to observe the conclusion of an operation, he watches in a large room where a bunch of young people are glued to screens, backward baseball caps on their heads, they're flying military drones all over the world, there's a signal and one of their operations pops up on the big screen, everyone in the room keeps an eye on it because that's their custom when something big happens, they watch a drones-eye view of a small convoy carrying the fugitive drives along a mountain road somewhere in Pakistan or Afghanistan, the drone approaches, launches, and the convoy is wiped out, the young people all cheer and make remarks like "he didn't like that!" and then get back to work on their home screens. It was fun fiction.

Minor correction. Respectfully.

No version of the U-2 ever did have, nor now does have, an afterburner.

That vertical climb you witnessed?

Pure primary thrust, coupled with one of the lightest airframes in weight-for-size, ever constructed.

And I'll promise you it didn't carry a full fuel load, either.

Normal angle of climb for a fully loaded U-2 still exceeded 45 degrees. A more shallow climb would result in over-speeding the airframe, with disasterous results soon to follow.

One of the most technically difficult planes to fly, ever.

And still in operation, today.

What a frikkin' marvel of aeronautics, it is.

Night, Horde!

I went to a local eatery tonight for some take out There was a long wait so I got to talking with the Millennials who worked there. Of course I was talking about random history and trivia and of course they turned it to a discussion of Trump and Iran. They knew that Trump was to blame. I asked what was it he was to be blamed for and explained some of the history of Quds etc. I did not go off because there was no point it. But to them, the only thing that mattered is Trump was "to blame".
I don't think Millennials even know who Gen X is. They have the Boomer meme and are sticking with it. I have to be fair here, I don't know the names of the post Millennial generations, to me, they are Millennials.

But you are probably right that Gen X is to blame for a lot of this stuff. My catch phrase is that Millennials should sue their teachers and look side eyed at their parents. It doesn't take a mathematician to understand Gen X is involved in all this.

I once critiqued a Millennial by telling him that his generation was the only modern generation not to rebel. I told him that they should have rebelled against the lefty bs their teachers shoved down their throats. He replied that "we perfected it". They had no interest in rebelling but to take it to the nth degree. When people say the young today are not only positive towards socialism, but towards Communism, that is not hyperbole. Of course that only describes a certain percentage, but it is a significant percentage.

I am not breaking any new ground here for sure. McClellan was great at forming a well disciplined army out of nothing. The problem was he was unwilling to risk that army to win.

The movie Gettysburg has a lot of flaws. But there is one line Martin Sheen delivered that that rang true to me. He said, " To be a good soldier you have to love the army. To be a good commander, you have to be willing to order the death of the thing you love". Now of course that is just a line and it leaves a lot of things open. The worst commanders ordered death because they did not plan well. But at some point you have to take calculated risks. I think that is the point. McClellan didn't want to risk the army he created.

One thing I have learned by studying Civil War era history is the troops hated a commander that wasted them but even more they hated a commander that did not win. You can act as if you care by being nice, by being lax, and even by being pious. They really hated the pious like General Polk and General Howard. They wanted to win and not be wasted for no good reason.

That I can still be surprised is, in itself, amazing, but sure enough today I saw a snippet of some nonsensical article citing "experts" claiming that offing the biggest criminal in the criminal regime controlling Iran will "weaken moderates".

Not making this up.

Of course the same nonsense immediately appeared in the wake of 9/11 (recall that killing nutcase terrorists just, in fact, helped the terrorist cause).

589 Hello overnighters.

There was a really good movie about drone operators and a mission, called Eye in the Sky, starring Snape and Jesse Pinkman.

It was so far from the video game stereotype. It was real and gripping. The operators were 12,000 miles away but they were looking at real people and a real dilemma and agonizing over whether or not to kill.

It was also Snape's last movie before he died. Really excellent performance.

yeah, that is the explanation. Apply so much pressure that they no longer want to resist. There really are not other options. It doesn't help that at least half this nation blames Americans in this situation and not the other side. Think of this happened under Obama. The media would be rallying the country in this righteous cause. It is sad to think about it, but there is no point in the end. We have to do what is right but also, at some point, figure out how we have created a country where half the people root for the other side.

616 Everyone went to sleep?
The snow joke, too funny!

The year of our groundhog day blizzard -2010- we shovelled before we went to bed, but the bulk of the snow came overnite. By morning we had 20+ inches and it was drifted some places more than 3 feet! We shovelled most of the day, but the plow never got to our street until later in the afternoon. And he only plowed a very narrow 2 car width. I was working overnites, delivering the newspapers, but the nite of the storm the paper wasn't printed as no one could get to the plant, so we didn't have to deliver. But the next nite, after shovelling all day,(took us forever to get through the end of our driveway!) i needed to get to our distribution center by midnight. My son was helping me, and as we were coming out to the garage we hear the snow plow. They were out doing cleanup. We quickly pull the car out and start down the driveway just getting to the city sidewalk, and the plow is coming close enough that I'm not going to make it onto the road before he gets to my driveway! Damn! I jump out of my car and wave my arms, shouting for him to stop. He kept going, dumping a good 3 feet of snow up the entire apron of our driveway. So my son runs back to the house to grab the shovels (as i stand there screaming some not very nice words!) We are shovelling like crazy, and the plow turned around, came closer, waved us back and carefully cleaned out the end of my drive with the huge city plow!

That storm was the most snow I had seen at one time since the 70s. It was beautiful yet frustrating at every turn!

Not here! That storm was an outlier, but they very seldom plow curb to curb on the 1st pass.

You should see what they do in our 'downtown' area. 1st winter we lived here i couldnt believe it. Then later when i took on the second job delivering, and saw the clean up production overnite, wow!

They put out no parking signs on the downtown streets for the nite of the clean up. Small town-shops and businesses all have on the street parking-in front. They plow all of the snow that they left at the curb and spilled onto the sidewalks to the center of the streets, and have front end loaders and dump trucks lined up to remove the snow. Then the salters come out to salt the mess that is left. Meanwhile, the entire downtown and the surrounding streets-the footprint of the original part of the city-have a maze of snow walls that you cant drive over to get to where you need to go!

629 So Lori Loughlin is going to jail, but James Comey, Andy McCabe, John Brennan and James Clapper aren't? WTF is wrong with our justice system?
Is Ms Laughlin a threat to the public? That antifa professor hit someone over the head with a bicycle lock. I'm pretty sure he didn't get 2 to 3 years!

I am very happy to recommend Dr Shiva to everyone that is in need of help to fix his/her broken relationship and marriage problem. When I found Dr Shiva, I was desperate in need of help to get my ex lover back. He left me for another woman. It happened so fast and I new nothing about the hole situation. He just dumped me after 3 years without no explanation and i believe she did a mooring on my boyfriend. I contacted Dr Shiva through his email and explain my problems to him and he cast a love spell to separate my boyfriend from the other woman and get him back to me. Shortly after he did the spell, my boyfriend came back to me and beg me to forgive him and felt horrible for what he just put me through. He said that I was the most important person in his life and we are planning our marriage. You can reach Dr Shiva for help on his email: reunitingexspell@yahoo. com. Dr Shiva is truely gifted and he alone can solve your relationship and marriage problem.
