The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Sefton touched on it this morning...the difference between a president whose goal is to protect and defend American interests, and a president whose goal is to support and defend his friends and allies across the world in spite of their anti-American proclivities.

President Trump is crippling Iran with his sanctions. That is a fact that only the American media can ignore. In addition, there are anti-Iran protests in Iraq and Lebanon, no doubt driven by sectarian differences, tribal differences, etc. So there is a very good explanation for the attack on the American Embassy in Baghdad. Deflect attention away from Iranian meddling and onto America...The great Satan!

But it failed, and it will continue to fail, because President Trump is not Obama or Bush, and responds to threats and attacks by counter-attacking rather forcefully. That is his political instinct, and it seems to be his military and geopolitical instinct as well.

Iraq is a mess, but do not confuse a tactical response to an attack on US soil with a strategic plan to minimize our exposure in the region. Absent a coherent plan for Iraq and Syria (and that doesn't exist except in the fever dreams of globalists), it is appropriate that we limit our risks. However, protecting our personnel and our embassy isn't a risk, it is an imperative, and President Trump has satisfied his responsibility to that imperative.

Hopefully the goal is to crush Iran under the weight of sanctions and military pressure until the internal politics become untenable for the Mad Mullahs, and they flee to Bahrain or Shitcanistan or -- probably -- Paris, where they can live their preferred lives of debauchery and excess.

32 I read through the lines on the reports and gather that Trump and Pompeo put a hell of a lot of pressure on the Iraqi government to make sure this ended. The current Iraqi govm't is extremely weak and terrified of taking on the militia's, which is probably why they hid and tried to get away with doing nothing when all of this first started. It appears that Trump and Pompeo have told them that hiding under the covers is not an option.

Applying economic pressure until the phony, cornball political/economic system folds up and abandons the shop seemed to work on the late-stage USSR.

The question is whether the mullahs' commitment to global Islamism is genuine, or a fig leaf for their power games. And if it is just a fig leaf - how committed are they to their positions of power?

Because if they are actually committed in any way, that won't work. Just as it wouldn't have worked if the 80s Soviet gerontocracy was as committed as, say, Stalin or Khrushchev or Brezhnev.

Political and economic pressure only work if the regime is unwilling or unable to leverage brutality against the populace.

Either way - it's the only correct course of action here, and I approve of Trump's handling of Iran thus far. My curiosity is whether it can or will work.

Posted by: JackStraw at January 02, 2020 11:11 AM (ZLI7S)

Nah - the reason they get so much press is that of the that 10%, maybe 5% are actually hardline "NeverTrumpers." And people from that fraction of "Republicans" occupy 90%+ of the positions in the media orgs and think tanks of the Conservative Media Ecosystem™.

If you're on the Acela Corridor cocktail circuit it would certainly appear that most "Republicans" hate Trump with the burning passion of a thousand suns.

99 So there is a very good explanation for the attack on the American Embassy in Baghdad. Deflect attention away from Iranian meddling and onto America.

I really think it's the reverse- to focus our attention on Iran instead of Democrat corruption. I mean, why would Iran publicly attack an embassy in Iraq? You're just asking for it. Yet, once again, it has boomeranged badly on the Democrats with Obama's White House visitor being revealed as the leader of the "mourners".
========
It was a political operation by the deep state. As you can see by the Joy Reid tweet.

They wanted this to be a Bengazi, if not hostage crisis for trump. They failed to calculate, as they always do, the fact that competent people are in charge and planning for these contingencies. Unlike when Obama and Hillary were there, or for that matter Jimmy Carter.

And yes, I am saying that the deep state has some common cause with Iran.

"Limiting our risk" is not part of any "strategy", if we have interests we are pursuing. Oh, maybe we do. And confronting Iran in any way, much less forcefully, is pointless unless there's a reason to do so - oh, that's right, we *do* have interests, not just "risks" to limit.

Oh well.

There was a male nurse locally who killed some people in much the same way. His victims were random, just people who happened to be vulnerable, where he thought he could get away with it. (almost did) The only "motive" was that apparently he started thinking he was a god and loved the "power" of being able to hand out death.

In reality, she's a very shallow and vain thinker, willing to toss absolutely anyone else over the side to advance herself. Tearing down Clinton/ Bush is useful rhetorically, but that's not an arena where she can beat Donald Trump. She claims Trump's economic policies are "beyond inept," at which point he can hardly be blamed for shrugging and responding "what is this dried up mongoloid talking about?"

On foreign policy, it's actually worse. "As president, he has gutted the diplomatic corps on which the Pentagon relies." Um... what?! "The Pentagon's budget has been too large for too long?" Trump is gonna fustigate Warren, assuming the Dems are dumb enough to steal the primary on her behalf.

I don't think you really meant that - Limiting Risk is a part of *every* strategy, unless you're Evil Knievel. In this case, the greatest risk in 2020 is Political. I have no doubt that John Kerry, when he's visited Iran, has told them that a new Middle Eastern War would be *very* bad for Trump politically, and so they should do everything they can to start one.

If you look back across the last year, this is at least the 4th time that Iran has gone out of its way to *try* to provoke a violent conflict with the US, but Trump keeps refusing to take the bait. It frustrates the Ayatollah's greatly - they know that a shooting war would greatly increase their standing with their people, while hurting Trump - but instead keeping up with financial sanctions Hurts them with their people, and does NOT hurt Trump.

Also note that when an American Contractor was killed by Militia missiles, Trump and Pompeo struck back with airstrikes that killed 25 militia members (and probably a few Iranian Rev. Guards) The message is clear; if Iran causes bloodshed, then blood will be spilled in response. But only then.

Yeah, making Don Jr. the next president has many advantages. I can be talked around to supporting someone else, assuming President Trump doesn't abolish Congress and enact a program of free helicopter rides, but the clock is ticking and they'll have to deliver a lot. If a Senator didn't try to sink a knife into John McCain's back before he betrayed the Republic, they automatically go into my No box. Cucked to the queer mafia? Rejected, and that includes Mike Pence. I like Mulvaney but I'm pretty sure he has no interest in elected office. Mike Pompeo? Maybe, but he's trying to be a Senator instead of sticking with the cabinet.

There aren't a lot of great options, which is why I suspect the President is carefully preparing his children for bigger jobs in the second term.

The Baghdad embassy was never threatened really, they allowed the "protest" and could have destroyed them at any moment (imo) if there was an actual assault. They gave a "measured response" ... a little tear gas ... could have killed them all. (and I bet we had air power at the ready, but would have been the wrong "optics".

Posted by: Zod at January 02, 2020 11:43 AM (u4/yY)

222 At CNN we see the end game the Dems thought would happen; the op-ed from the "law professor."

Their plan was to build a huge amount of political and public pressure on Trump ... something, something ... and Trump resigns.
For the good of the country
Like Nixon
And all the healing brought from such a selfless act of grace and humility
Just like after Nixon
Because Ford easily won against Carter because of all the healing

That's it. A game a chicken with a locomotive.

But it explains why all the "we really mean it this time" as they keep going--because they never thought they would really have to go through with it.
They had no plan beyond "and then Trump resigns": never thought Trump had a transcript let alone that he'd release it, never thought no Republicans would join them in the House, never thought the polls would move against them, and on and on--never gamed out a single counter-punch.

Their entire Super Bowl game plan was "score first."
Then they lost the coin toss.
And Trump ran the opening kick back for a touchdown.
And had kept scoring.
Now all they want to talk about is the halftime show.

Nixon's defense team admitted their case was such that resigning would be better- but if they had any idea how weak the impeachment crew's prep was, they would have fought on.

Donald Trump has proven himself the cleanest Wahsington pol in years, utterly frustrated the Dems and their lawfare, forced impeachment to a farcical position on the back burner, and put a former VP square in his iron sights. That's more than Nixon could have accomplished in his wildest dreams. And he's not done by a long shot.

304 I kind of feel bad for Pope Francis because he was just being human in his reaction. The woman who grabbed his hand gave his arm a good, solid pull and he's no spring chicken. Also, crowds are dangerous and annoying on a good day. JPII might have handled it better but he was nearly a saint (what's the status of that anyway?). So, while it wasn't a great moment I don't think it's the scandal some people seem to think it is.

310 It is amusing that the Dems keep thinking, "if we can just land a punch in Trump, he and his support will fold."
That he is weak and his support is shallow.

Like thinking you only need to just hit Mayweather once to win.

It's round 10 and they're out there spinning their arms like a windmill ....

319 Our best bet might not be a direct military response. This time, we want to throw some serious support to those anti-regime forces in Iran (and again, doing what Obama failed to do). It would be fitting if the mullahs were ousted by another internal revolution.

320 "...responds to threats and attacks by counter-attacking rather forcefully. "

You win be getting inside the enemies decision loop. He needs to be reacting to you, not the other way around.

That is one of Trump's secrets - he reacts unpredictably. That fouls up your careful plan to push him into a corner. He may just force you into a corner instead.
