Pineapples symbolize swingers, apparently. I remind my friend with the pineapple door knocker of that.
Posted by: dagny at January 17, 2020 09:40 AM (nRWPy) Since medieval(?) times, pineapples have symbolized hospitality. Cuz rare and expensive in those days so if you were eating one you were being treated extraordinarily well as a guest. That's why the main gate of Bellermine University has a big WTF? Pineapple atop it's entrance gate. I suppose with swingers..it could be the cucks hospitality of "take my wife, please". Posted by: naturalfake at January 17, 2020 09:46 AM (q57gj) 142

I don't think Italy had kings then. More whatever prince, duke or equivalent ruled the city state. Germans and Italians sucked at unification, prol b/c of th he HRE, but still.

The potentate of a primitive village oversaw a bumper harvest. He threw a party in his palace (really, just a larger multi-story version of the grass huts that were common in the village) celebrate. At the party, he told the villagers that he would be commissioning a new throne (really, a large wooden chair) to commemorate the record harvest.
The throne was duly built and delivered. The delivery men asked the potentate what he wanted done with the old throne. He commanded, "The old throne is a part of the great history of this village! Move it to the top floor and store it out of the way!" Huffing and puffing, the workmen moved the old throne into storage. The next year marked another banner harvest. As did following year and the one after that. In each year, the potentate commissioned a new throne and had the old one moved into storage at the top of the palace. Word spread of the village's success and their level of wealth that afforded their potentate to amass his collection of thrones. Potentates from other villages came to learn his ways and methods of agricultural surplus. Several years in, the palace was groaning under the weight of the surplus thrones. This year was another record, and the potentate commissioned yet another throne. It was duly built and delivered and the workmen began to haul last year's throne up to the attic. As they were storing it, however, the elaborate grass hut collapsed under the weight of the thrones. What is the moral of this story? The moral is, "those who live in grass houses should not stow thrones." Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) (I2dne) at January 17, 2020 09:47 AM (I2dne) 149

Posted by: dagny at January 17, 2020 09:47 AM (nRWPy) The HRE (read Austria) had nominal authority of Germany(and for a fair time much of Italy). They were the best prospect for a unified Germany for a long time. Luther and the Protestants effectively created a permanent division between North and South Germany in addition to more localized division. It destroyed any prospect of an Austrian lead unification of Germany. Italy was a battlefield between France and Austria, in addition to Venice and the Papal States when they were significant. Just kidding, it is art I guess. The only thing I will add is based on the name of the painter. I took some classes on the Renaissance and remember what they said about Italian names. This may not be correct but that never stopped me. The names that have "Di" mean "the son of". The names that have "de" like Cosimo De Medici mean "of as in Cosimo of the Medici family". If the name has a "da", as in Leonardo da vinci, it means "from"; as in Leonardo from Vinci. this could all be wrong but that is how I recall it. It is my truth. I was just reading, Meggie Sparkles and Prince Carrot Top have a hit a snag with their "move to Canada". There is a backlash. Canada is sort of a "virtual monarchy". They don't want any "senior royals" living on Canadian territory. The idea of virtual monarchy is rule by the royals in theory, but not in practice. If a royal moves on their territory, then that fiction becomes a problem. Or something. So, Meggie may not be welcome back. I think I can understand why this was painted - first, imagine the Court of the Medici's, the richest and most powerful family in Italy at the height of the renaissance; and then recall how every artist in Italy was working to paint the most Beautiful this, the most Beautiful that, they would have been trooping through the door daily. So here comes Bronzino, and he says "ha! I'm going to paint you a grotesque!" PLUS it's of a guy who all the Medici's knew and loved. I think everyone in that court would have thought it was hilarious, and Bronzino would have been well rewarded.

Bordertown- features an early Bette Davis as a scheming bitch (I know- shocker) and Angel on My Shoulder- he plays a double role, and has the great Claude Raines as his devil boss. For any not familiar with him, Muni was sort of the Tom Hanks of his day (or vice versa). Well know for playing historical characters. The Morning Consult found support for Romney, 72, going down after he called for former national security adviser John Bolton to testify at Trump's impeachment trial, which began on Thursday. The poll shows the senator's approval rating among Utah Republicans, from September through December of 2019, dropping 18%. The picture is surprising. I wondered if it might be a portrait of a famous dwarf person and I note someone looked it up and he was. The owl and the bird (and propitious butterflies) made me wonder if the artist was meaning to invoke the sort of nature illustrations of various species, which might be tongue in cheek meant to feel like a scientific examination of the odd specimen, which would be simultaneously sort of cringy and also suggest that the fellow agreeing to this for his portrait had a sense of humor.
