The Morning Rant - Merry Christmas

I really liked CBD's rant about Christmas that he posted last week.

The fact is that Christianity has been a huge driver of Western political philosophy, and is indispensable to the cause of freedom. And spare me your sanctimonious lectures about religion being responsible for so much death and destruction in human history...

Screw you...I'll take Christianity, with all of its warts, any day. And don''t forget that much of the glory of Western art and music was financed by the Church, or created to express religious themes.

So here is another example of how Christian faith has inspired some great art. My daughter, who graduated with a degree in music, told me that in order to understand and appreciate all that is going on in the development of Western music, you also need to understand what was going on Church history during that time. The two are so intertwined, they are virtually inseperable.

That said, I've always liked the Medieval Baebes vocal group, they have voices like angels, and this song about Christ's incarnation is one of my favorites. Merry Christmas to all of the Horde!

39 the year someone unwisely gave one of my brothers a pop gun. Cousin Richie popped all the old glass ornaments on our tree on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we went to Richie's house. As soon as we got in the door, my brother Vinnie headed straight for their tree. Richie's sister Camille tried to block Vinnie and yelled "Nooooo!" but it was futile. Vinnie hurled himself onto their tree and brought it down.
Good times.

43 It's true. Religion, over the years, has caused the death of a lot of people.

If you want to get the slaughterhouses REALLY spooled up, it takes totalitarian, collectivist Atheist government - responsible for approx. 100 million deaths alone in the 20th century.

And that's not counting the wars; that they caused.

Don't be fooled.

Milady and I are at Mom's for the Day. We already did our big family dinner-and-gifts day last Saturday.

Son (not married) just texted that he and cousin S will be here in an hour or so. We're just going to have a light Christmas lunch.

Son (married) and family are at their home in Big City.

Daughter (practically engaged) is meeting her new beau's family in upstate NY! (I taunt her with our almost-70° Christmas Day weather.) She confirms that Italian Christmas Eve feasting was impressive. Also, most importantly, his family seemingly approves of her. !!!

Barry O: Sounds good to me

Posted by: TheQuietMan at December 25, 2019 12:14 PM (FdGKu)

83 Every year at this time I think back to those previous Christmases far from home. Sometime I took the rotation so that those with families could spend them with their wives and children. Those of us pulling the duty would spend our time together quietly as we worked, checking in and looking after each other. Sometimes I might be invited to share a Christmas dinner with a local family from church or other familiarity. Those adoptive families expressing sincere affection and appreciation were a gift simply in truth of their very being real. Those bitter sweet days are touch points to me that I had enough wisdom despite my youth to know I should pause and take notice and commit to memory the sounds smells feelings and hopes.

I hope you all take opportunities to mark some of the moments of this holiday season to burn into your soul the sounds of friendly voices and faces of those you spend time with and truly be fully present with all the sweetness, how ever small and short. In that way you may find the true joy of Christmas.

Everyone knows that most of that is actually the fault of Guns, Swords, and Axes.

anything to avoid blaming it on the people themselves, who were doing what people like to do best.

Religion is at its worst not when it influences people to do things, but rather when it becomes an excuse for people doing what they always wanted to do anyways.

104 Prior to the rise of Christianity it was considered completely normal to not only have slaves but to force them to fight to the death for your amusement, and then crucify them if they didn't go along with it.

And when we look at countries that have abandoned Christianity like Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany you see a revision to that sort of barbarism.

105 93 Our Founders had studied history and knew that religion mixed into government power structures often had bad consequences."

They didn't have to look far. They all knew that the King was the head of the Church of England, and although things weren't quite as repressive in the 18th Century as they'd been in the bad old days of mass executions, you still didn't have a chance in Hell of being any part of the King's Government unless you were a faithful member of the Church of England. (Because to refuse to be a member was a direct Insult to the King, of course) Those kinds of policies brought most of the Puritans to New England.

151 Cherry tart cookies and jelly donuts are the same. They're made, but no one eats them. They're always the last ones left. Anything with chocolate is eaten first. Those who don't want the chocolate will take anything that's not the cherry tart or jelly. All the chocolate are eaten first, but when someone wants more they'll take anything that's not the cherry tart or jelly. The cherry tart and jelly donuts are only eaten because they're the only thing left, having sitting there for hours, until finally someone who wants the giddy of eating a cookie or donut is desperate enough the cherry tart or jelly will do.
