I'm not a fan of Gainsborough's early portraits, they appear wooden and rather lifeless. His later ones are much better, including this one. I'm surprised at the darkish background for a child's portrait. It seems a bit odd when there isn't a moral lesson being put forward.
I've heard about this painting my whole life but no one explained why it was considered so important. I assume it was the way Gainsborough captured the detail and sheen of the boy's clothing, the delicate skin tones, and his direct, almost challenging, gaze. 77 I'm not a fan of Gainsborough's early portraits, they appear wooden and rather lifeless.
But there is a place in Woodside, on route 35 (Skyline Drive) that promptly renamed itself after its owner, Alice somebody or other, when the song turned into a hit!
There is a Theresa's Cafe in Stockbridge which says it's the former Alice's Restaurant. It's in a suitable alleyway and its facade is all overgrown with ivy. I just went to find the picture so I could remember its name and you can barely read the sign for the ivy. It was closed when I was there, though, so no report. Posted by: What's a Seawolf? at December 23, 2019 09:56 AM (nNEcr) ======== Does anyone actually call it the greatest painting in the world? I imagine serious art critics wouldn't do that. They'd probably eschew any labels like that for anything. I mean, it's a quality work that demonstrates great talent from the artist, but it is just a portrait of an anonymous woman. It seems to me that it's really just the most recognizable painting in the world (which is why they burn it instead of anything else at the beginning of the movie Equilibrium). That it became that doesn't necessarily mean that anyone thinks it's the greatest. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, source of random movie thoughts at December 23, 2019 09:58 AM (q80AH) 115

We are over 100. It's a gun thread.
This kinda got started over in THE gun thread, but I saw it carry through to JJ's. I keep reading that "NRA didn't do this in X state" and thus they are worthless. I think that this is wrong. For example, I saw someone write that "NRA" did nothing about I-1639 in Washington State. Well, nothing, if you don't count the lawsuit that the NRA has in Federal court seeking to have it overturned. Like I said in the gun thread, this is a combined arms team. If you aren't aware of what the NRA is doing, then maybe that is on them, but maybe it is on you. I am an NRA member, and yes, I was disappointed by the leadership brouhaha, but we shouldn't throw them overboard, we need everyone in this fight. Since our resident Art Expert is out, I'll point out the reason this particular painting was made. At the time, Art Critics (as usual) were throwing around their favorite Theories of Art, and one of them was a Theory that the Color Blue could *never* be the subject of a proper painting, it could only be a background. Gainsborough painted "Blue Boy" to demonstrate that they were all full of shit.

The way the plot swerved from TFA to TLJ to ROS was just way too erratic. I actually liked a lot about TLJ, and I think I'd have preferred both worlds where we got either JJ or Rian Johnson to direct the entire trilogy than the one we got where they fought creatively about so much. New Zealand authorities said Saturday their country will be a safer place after owners handed in more than 50,000 guns during a buyback program following a ban on assault weapons. But critics say the process was flawed and many owners have illegally stashed their firearms. The government banned the most lethal types of semi-automatic weapons less than a month after a lone gunman in March killed 51 worshippers at two Christchurch mosques. The police then launched a six-month program to buy the newly banned weapons from owners. The buyback ended midnight Friday, with gun collection events staying open late as police reported in a surge in last-minute returns. I do wonder how much the show might differ from the games, since the show is technically based on the book series that ALSO inspired the games. I don't expect it will vary too much, but I'm interested to find out.
I just love that Henry Cavill is a PC gamer himself. That just makes me grin. Posted by: MWR, The Public Intellectual (aka Beth) at December 23, 2019 09:49 AM (rP4OC) Seems like the show is going to follow the books. The games all take place after the books end so there really won't be much conflict between them. For instance the first episode is about how Geralt gets one of his nicknames, The Butcher of Blavikan. And also A story that gets referenced in The Blood and Wine expansion. As a side note it seems that this week the author and CD Projekt Red have come to terms on their disagreement and are all buddies now so that is good news on potential future games. Gainsborough was THE Preeminent portraitist in Britain during the colonial era. If you were rich and cultured you had a Gainsborough. It was a veddy British thing to do.
Part of breaking from Britain for the colonists was developing a new national pride separate from British pride. Britains sneered at American for being too crude and unpolished. Americans had to find their own identity. That included their own artists, their own tastes separate from British pride. Around that time, Gilbert Stuart emerged as THE preeminent American portraitist. (Famous painting of Washington is one of his works.) He became an important part of Americans having their own identity, even if it is merely rich Americans spending money on getting their portrait done. Comparing Gainsborough vs Stuart is kind of fun. Moron fight: who do you consider the best portraitist (Only looking around their portaits, nothing else) in history? Gainsborough? Stuart? Rembrandt? Sargent? Supposedly, Gainsborough preferred painting landscapes over portraits, but portraiture paid too well for him to forego it. So he put detailed landscapes in the backgrounds of his portraits, so he could do what he enjoyed while making money at it.

in the catalog notes for a very is similar gainsborough portrait sold by the estate of alfred taubman (who owned sotheby's):
"recent research by dr. susan slogan has overturned the long-held belief that the huntington painting is a portrait of jonathon buttall, an iron-m0nger and friend of the artist. she has established that the painting shows the artist's nephew gainsborough-dupont", who would become gainsborough's assistant and an artist in his own right.
