From The World Of Sports

Death of a Heisman Winner: The Fall of Rashaan Salaam Pretty sad story. This is a guy that most people would say “had it all”, at the top of his chosen profession, and couldn't handle it when things went wrong. I hope he's at peace.

This, on the other hand, is a feel good story: Joe Burrow’s Heisman speech goes viral, and cash donations to Athens food pantry pour in. If you don't know who Burrow is, he's a college QB from LSU who just won the Heisman Trophy and is most likely to be the #1 pick in next April's NFL draft (Chase Young is probably a better player, but the Bengals who are picking first need a QB, and Burrow is a rare talent). Anyhow, Burrow mentioned the poverty in the county where he grew up in his acceptance speech....and over a quarter of a million dollars has since been donated to the Athens food bank. Good for you, sports fans.

Gender Insanity

A quarter of youngsters being treated at transgender clinics may just be autistic, new research claims

As JK Rowling is discovering, the modern transgender movement is not about equality, or tolerance or any of the other lofty ideals that it claims to champion. Rowling is as reliable a woke leftist as there is on the planet. No, the modern transgender movement is about power: The power to force people to deny reality or suffer the consequences, and the power to obtain a personal position over other people because of claimed victim status. That Canadian dude out west who keeps trying to force other people to handle his junk under the guise of waxing or an OB/Gyn appointment, he doesn't need either of those things. What he does need is the petty ego gratification of making someone else do something they don't want to do to appease his desires. These people are bullies, and as such they will continue to push and prod and manipulate until someone stands up to them and says “enough”.

Bill of Rights Day was a couple of days ago. Gee, I guess we've still got the 3rd one. Yay.

School In Alaska

A Chugiak High teacher hunted a moose and brought it to school. Then things got interesting.

They're going to have a class dinner with some of the meat and donate the rest to local food banks. I approve.

Greed

Look, medical billing is a nightmare, and anyone who has asked me about how healthcare reform should be done will notice that I always start with 100% transparent billing, but the current system is what it is. This, however, is nothing more than manipulating the system in order to intentionally fuck patients with big bills. IOW this is nothing but legalized theft. I rarely call for government regulation of anything, but this shit needs to be outlawed now.

Ending surprise billing: A moral test for physicians

I will also note that almost all of the plans sold through the exchange are HMO, EPO or other restricted network plans. “So what”,you might say, “in my area almost all docs are in the network”. That may be true, but if you fall into the clutches of these thieves it won't matter. On most HMOs “out of network” means “You pay the entire bill, Chester, we're washing our hands of it”. With PPO plans you at least have limits on your deductibles and OOP max out of network. They may be much higher than the in-network ones, but they're there. Unfortunately you have to go off-exchange to find PPO plans in most states, and so many people don't even know that they exist anymore.

Related: The Fifth Circuit issued a ruling in the ACA case this week which is being heralded by many as a “death blow” to Obamacare, But is it? Probably not. Though I am not a lawyer, the reasoning in this piece strikes me as sound, and I'll bring up one additional point: The powers that be, including the judiciary, are very, very, very reluctant to end the ACA because the left has done a fantastic job of equating ending the ACA with “taking away health care” in most people's minds. Of course it would do no such thing, this country had health care and (better) insurance prior to this abortion, and would have them both again if it was struck down. I would say that we've lost that messaging battle, however.

Amazing what one is willing to believe when you don't believe in a Power greater than yourself. Now factor in 13-17 (or more) years of "government-funded" indoctrination starting at a very young age, leftist control of the culture and media, and it's not hard to see how The Cult gets its allure.

106 as mentioned in the thread below I spent my downtime today doing physics.

So: if my aerodynamics are right, 70 km over Venus' clouds the gravity should be 8.67, contrast with Earth 9.8. Up there the wind is 100 m/s (we've known this since the 1970s). Air density 0.09 kg/m3 - you can't breathe it, but you can fly in it.

If you run a 500 kN turbine against that, which Boeing already can do; that seems to be that you can carry 2000 metric tonnes of freight... for as long as the power lasts.

1000 metric tonnes of that can be carrying the turbine, and the submarine-class nucular reacter to power it.

158 The tranny stuff is weird.

If it were just woke stuff, I'd probably laugh it off and chalk it up to silly college aged kids being stupid.

But it's not. It's doctors, who should be rational intelligent humans. But there is some weird obsession in the medical industry to preform experiments on humans and most of the time it's a sexual experiment.

I think there are a lot of sociopath doctors out there that used to jack the dog off, wear mommies panties or see what they could shove up their holes when they were children.

Strange people. I guess a medical degree doesn't necessarily imbue humanity or normality to one. It's hard to imagine the dark nature of a person that wants to spend 8 years in school so that they can actively pursue a career in snuffing out fetuses or chopping body parts off of children.

Portland has taken the definition of "food desert" to the next level - it is not enough to have a Safeway or similar middle-class store nearby, you also need to have access to a Whole Foods or similar yuppified supermarket. If you don't, you are in a food desert.

So cousin and cheerleader-mom started posting links to canned responses about yes, it really is an impeachment and it is so wrong for McConnell to counter-prosecute... or something. I logged off without replying and will check in next week to see how many hours they spent replying. Ha.

I had inquired of the Feds about Direct Deposit of a Treasury check.

The Feds wrote back, giving me a list of seven different agencies, and their phone numbers. The idea being that I pick the proper agency, and call them.

Here's the good part, beneath the phone numbers is the following paragraph:

"Should your agency attempt to refer you back to this office, please inform them of this letter and assure them that they need to handle this request for you."

Yay AOP !

For the floating farms, I'm putting these ~55 km up at ~55 degrees latitude, over the southern tip of Ishtar Terra for the mining. That gets us a comfortable low-tropical temperature at a high-altitude air pressure, with ambient moisture. Like Kenya, or the upland Maya areas. Great place to farm potatoes and maize and yams.

[said ambient moisture happens to be concentrated SULFURIC ACID but we can deal with that when we deal with that.]

I was above concerned with the Venus spaceport. Flying at the equator way ABOVE those acid clouds.

There are a few in every town. The cops typically set up their speed trap without permission, then people get tickets, then business drops off, then some time goes by, then the owner gets wind that he's "letting" the cops use their parking lot for speed traps, then he says he didn't give them permission to do that.

Then the owner has to contact the police department and tell them to stop trespassing on his property.

Only THEN there's the discussion about the "free police protection" which the owner has the right to refuse.

And I did it for under $200, developing it entirely myself.

I think Knife of Dreams was the last one I really loved.

Sanderson's style is just enough off that it did not 'ring true' while reading. It was like hearing a story told by someone else who heard it from someone else- which it was.

Sanderson's epic, Stormlight, is pretty darn good. Good characters. A little wacky, but that is kind of his shtick.

Absolutely, yes. .30-'06 class power, good effective range, and the better examples can be wickedly accurate.

Keep in mind, the correct bullet diameter is .311, vs. the '06 and .308's diameter of (duh) .308.

If you get one, you'll want to put the effort in to make damn sure there's not even a vapor of Cosmoline left anywhere in the chamber or action.

One weak-spot in the Mosin design, is low-camming advantage when lifting the bolt handle to extract a spent shell. And if there's any Cosmoline in there, it'll form an instant shellac due to the heat of firing, and you're likely to need a leather mallet to hammer that bolt handle up till the case breaks free of the chamber.

But you won't hurt that bolt handle with that leather mallet. Is Mosin. Is stronk, like bool!

Buy a post-war Polish M-44. Made in the (then) newly refurbished CZ/Brno plant.

Fit and finish to rival the finest sporting rifles of it's day. NASA would've signed off on the machining. Weatherby would've hired 'em to do the polishing and bluing. The stocks weren't as "nicely" finished, but they were perfect in fit, configuration and absolutely perfect cartouches and other stampings.

Good trigger, and 2 MOA accuracy from the one I'd once owned.

And who doesn't love the muzzle blast and fireball from an M-44?

314 Oh, are we talking Mosins? Lots of fun shooting cheap ammo, it used to be a lot cheaper but not as much any more. The rifles themselves are getting expensive as well, I think I paid a buck and a quarter for mine (full size 91/30 Tula made in '42) and it came with enough MILSURP steel core ammo for the average Russian peasant to re-fight WW2. Mine is actually fairly accurate out to 100 yards, I can occasionally hit steel at 300 but that inaccuracy is more due to the shooter than the shooty stick. I don't know if I would pay the prices they are asking these days, either for the gun or for the ammo, but for what I paid it's a fun cheap to feed shooty stick.

It's just a 91/30, but with an 18 in. (or metric version) barrel, and a folding spike (fluted triangle) bayonet.

Ya gotta fire it though, with the bayonet deployed. Harmonics get all messed up if you shoot with the bayonet folded, and accuracy suffers.

Any soldier or fighter armed with any Mosin-Nagant rifle or carbine, is NOT "poorly armed".

Nagant revolver though is... marginal.

333 Isn't the poverty rate defined as the lowest 15% of household income.

Pretty much. I think that through the 1960 census they asked if you had indoor plumbing or not.

Some evil right-wing organization a while ago noted what fraction of "poor people" had air conditioning, smartphones, large-screen TVs, cable television, and on and on. Very high numbers.

It's still not enough - a government study just came out in Portland announcing that a quarter of the population was "income deficient", or some such euphemism, and how shocking it was. Turned out that being "income deficient" was defined for a family of four as making less than $90,000 a year.

Johnson's impeachment was just as much BS from what I remember and have read, but at least he was guilty of what he was charged. BJ's impeachment was the same, a complete and utter clown show, but there again he was actually guilty (and unlike AJ, was convicted). Donald Trump, on the other hand, not only is not guilty of anything they have accused him of, but in fact various Demoncrats have committed all of the offenses (and as yet remain un-indicted for any of them). He's the first President in American history to be impeached because "he's a big fat meany-head and WE HATESES HIM!!!! GOLLUM!!!

347 The Finnish Mosins are epic. I collect "Winter War" stuff, and I have both an M28/30 and a M27. They are nothing like my Mosin Nagant M91/30s, despite being based on them. The Finn's really put a lot of effort into turning them into better rifles. You can tell immediately when you pick them up. The Finnish rifles are heavier, better stock, better sights, better barrel.
I have 3 91/30s, including a Ukrainian knockoff PU Sniper (currently disassembled and being rebuilt) and 2 M38s.
Mosins are a blast and ammo is super cheap. Just don't buy the corrosive stuff (or of you do, clean immediately after shooting).

A major evangelical Christian magazine founded by the late Rev. Billy Graham on Thursday published an editorial calling for President Donald Trump's removal from office.

The editorial in Christianity Today -- coming one day after the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives made Trump the third president in American history to be impeached -- raised fresh questions about the durability of his support among the conservative evangelicals who have proven to be a critical component of his political base.

The magazine's editorial, written by editor-in-chief Mark Galli, envisions a message to those evangelical Christians who have remained stalwart Trump backers "in spite of his blackened moral record."

"Remember who you are and whom you serve," Galli's editorial states. "Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump's immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency."

It didn't really do anything that any other serviceable bolt action issue rifle of the time wouldn't do. You want to talk about what they killed Germans with, it was artillery. Towards the end there, pushing into Germany, the Soviets literally wiped entire units out of existence with artillery over the span of an hour or two.

When the very first one came out it played for almost a full year straight at the local theater. I think me a few friends went just under 20 times during that year. At first we went every week, then maybe once a month. We were really young so we couldn't get enough. It was fucking epic. Almost a year, unreal. Now its a dumpster fire. The last girl power episode resulted in a dead luke crywalker, and the resistance being reduced to 6 members, a jet ski, and maybe a crate of pomegranates.

In 2014, a federal judge dismissed the Article 3 lawsuit claim, saying the police aren't soldiers, but allowed the 4A charges in the lawsuits to go forward.

Like you [I think] I piled the com-bloc milsurp ammo high when it was dirt cheap, so blasting away with the Mosins costs me less than many non-reloaders shooting their handguns.

Today, in honor of the Battle of the Bulge, it was the M1 instead of the 91/30 at the range. Front sight needs to be moved a tiny nudge to the right, but being lazy I might just live with the rear sight being moved a click or two to the left.

One of the more interesting things about Mosins are the sights, which are marked to ranges far, far in excess of those practical for the rifle, in direct aimed fire. Same with Mausers of the Boer War era.

Not *quite* as optimistic as to maximum range, but "Volley Fire" was a trained command, all the way past WWI, for most Continental Armies.

The machine gun pretty much put paid to the idea of laying down a "beaten zone" of projectiles by rifle.

It it's day though, it was indeed, a quite effective means of keeping the enemy's head down below the trench line, while your troops engaged in maneuvers to advance.

Mr. Maxim's Veto though, was not to be over-ridden.

413 So.... 9mm carbine. Yes or no?

As I see it the main disadvantage is that it's still a pistol cartridge, with all that implies. The longer barrel is no doubt gonna gain you some accuracy and velocity, but it's still not a rifle cartridge. Plus, I'm not a particular fan of 9mm even as a pistol round.

The main advantages is that 9mm ammo is cheap, and is probably going to be available as long as any ammo is available. It could likely be obtained by "informal requisition" even if civilian ammo sales were outlawed.

Thoughts?

USAF Law Enforcement Academy, Lackland AFB, 1976.

We "trained" for AA engagement with the M-16 A1, for both helicopter and jet adversaries.

No live fire, and no live, flying adversaries.

Films, and "lay down and point up" field excercises.

Same principle though. Put a "lead curtain" up in to the flight path, and hope for the best.

Downside?

Some of that "lead curtain" might just be of the vertical variety.

And that shit just ain't right.

430 Thanks to the kind of sofistikatid connecshuns I can make here in South Texas, I got cheap tickets for the Thursday night premiere of SW9. The theatre was promoting it pretty well, had cosplayers in Chewie and storm trooper outfits and all.

So the wife and I go inside, and the theatre is half full. Maybe _leaning_ towards two-thirds. For a Thursday premiere. And the movie starts. And runs. And ends. To Dead. Silence. Not a cheer, not a jeer, not a laugh. The actors went through their lines, the cameos from earlier movies stepped on camera and off, the plot spun out and ended. To absolute, I mean, absolute quiet. And when the movie finally ended, the crowd just shuffled out in sort of a sad silence.

This wasn't a movie, it was a wake. A mandatory viewing of dead friends. And this is a theatre that was lively and engaged during Ford vs. Ferrari, and went absolutely berserk when Cap grabbed the hammer in Endgame.

I don't think Disney is going to like this weekend...

I have one of those weird Kel-Tek Sub 2000 collapsing rifles in .40. They also offer in 9mm.
It has a small carry case that I can carry 4 22rd Glock .40 mags plus the rifle and it's surprisingly accurate. I can hit milk jugs at 100 yards. Glock makes 33rd 9mm mags so you could carry 132 rds in a small carry package and be way more accurate than a pistol. I keep mine under the seat of my truck as a last-resort gun, It could be thrown easily to an LEO person in need as well though, if the need arose.

When I was in the 5th grade, we lived in Buena Park, CA. In an apartment, just across the fence from a Hell's Angel's rented house.

On occasion, my Mom had to resort to letting one of their "old ladies" be the babysitter to my older brother and me. Never any problem with them, by the way. Ever. (My Mom worked as a waitress in fine dining, until her illness took her out of that job, evermore.)

But, once, while "under their watch", one of their guy's HD bikes would NOT start, no matter the efforts brought to bear. (I was young and not versed in the "why's" of it's failure to start.)

End result though, was that he beat that bike to death with a heavy sledgehammer. We're talking a good 20 minutes of mayhem as he destroyed every square inch of that bike.

Everything you thought you knew about the Hell's Angels?

Yeah.

459 413 So....

Thoughts?

The main advantage is same ammo as your short gun. I have a Beretta Storm in .45 APC, If it ever comes down to shooting times, I'm halving the ammo I have to carry for it and my 1911. Drawback is giving up big time on magazine capacity. YMMV

*this part of the concept limps. You already have plenty of buildings. Nice stone buildings. And during the era everything ran of coal. I guess part of the idea is going to where the coal is found so you could more readily transport/use it, but still.

465 Demorats spend an enormous amount to time and money on impeachment and after 3 long years. With fraudulent records and testimony, and denying politicians due process in the investigation, then at the end demanding swift passage of the sordid cluster f. Now demand the Senate has to change to please/appease Nancy Pelosi or the urgent impeachment by the house may never get to the Senate. The Senate that will insist on questioning those involved in illegal/criminial tactics.
Seems like all this will go away if we just adopt a one party government the demorats demand, Stalin/Mao style.

But it's PDT's character that's so bad...

Can we impeach Clyburn now that he's called for the death of the President?

Posted by: BackwardsBoy. Impeach the Democrat Traitors Instead at December 20, 2019 07:31 AM (HaL55)

648 Because voting on two articles of impeachment against an opposition president you don't like and then running away from your vote is just like invading France. We did it for the soldiers, the children, and to kill the frogs.

Her so-called press conference yesterday was pathetic. Trump can intelligently spar with the press for longer than Nancy can stay awake, but he's an idiot while Nancy's brilliant, according to herself and the Media.

664 Starliner status: The flight control team in Houston is continuing to troubleshoot and work-up options. Starliner is in good shape for now - solar arrays are deployed and working. But if they can't get the current guidance and/or propulsion system problems resolved, I don't believe Starliner can rendezvous and dock to ISS. Not sure if it can correctly re-enter and land, either.
