Gun Thread: After Thanksgiving and Before Christmas Edition [Weasel]

christmas ar scaled.jpg
note asymmetrical hand size

Can you believe Thanksgiving is already in the rear-view mirror and Christmas is coming up fast? I don't know about you all but this year has been flying by for me. While you're out shopping for others, how about getting yourself a little something, too? Or even a big something! Here's a question, what one shooting related item would you like to find under the tree on Christmas morning? I'm talking about the one thing you've always wanted but have never managed, for one reason or another, to get for yourself?

Let's take a look below and see what our moron pals have been up to, shall we?

Well here's a nice stocking stuffer sent in by a lurker.

I saw last Sunday's post about the dry fire laser. I highly recommend the below product, DryFireMag, which eliminates the need the rack the slide for trigger reset. Just insert like a regular magazine and go to town. I use it with the MantisX system and have seen incredible results.

DFM scaled.jpg

That's a nifty little gizmo, and at $99 not a bad deal. What do you all think? Anyone else have one? Thanks for the product endorsement, lurker, and feel free to jump in and comment anytime!

******

Our pal Scuba_Dude is definitely putting his new NYC firearms license to use by taking every opportunity to get to the range!

Here are some pics of a day at the range. My target is on the right and my nephews is on the left. I had the target at around 7 - 9 yards. Gun used was my Sig P226 RX using only the iron sights. Ammo was Blazer 115 grain FMJ. 90 rounds used.

S_D 2 scaled.jpg

S_D 1 scaled.jpg

I think those are probably Birchwood Casey six-inch Shoot-N-C stick on targets, and I have to say that at 20+ feet Scuba_Dude is doing just fine from a self-defense prospective. Nice shooting!

Scuba_Dude also went on to mention that he has registered for a couple of pistol courses at the Sig Sauer Academy in Epping, NH, in the late spring of next year and has graciously agreed to grant the Gun Thread an exclusive report afterwards. Thanks Scuba_Dude, can't wait to hear all about it!

******

Next we have a follow-up report from our pal WTM in Texas. Last week WTM shared photos from a visit to the The Bryan Museum in Galveston, TX, and this week he has a report from The Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum in Waco, TX.

I have also been to the Texas Rangers Museum in Waco, TX., and here is a tiny fraction of what they have on display. The museum has many hundreds of Ranger firearms on display, ranging from the lever action rifles and SA revolvers of the Rangers’ early days through the weapons used in the 1960’s. I didn’t get photos of those, unfortunately, but they must have two hundred lever action rifles alone in one display. There is a large section devoted to law enforcement in the 1930’s, and therein is a very nice display on Bonnie and Clyde. My maternal grandparents knew Bonnie and Clyde, and my grandfather was probably the one who customized Clyde’s sedan so as to allow use of a BAR through the rear window.

BTW, all automatic weapons seen here and in the museum are fully functional, except that their firing pins have been removed.

So how cool is it that WTM's grandparents knew Bonnie and Clyde? Thanks WTM!

Next up we have a great range report from our pal Iron Mike Golf

Tomorrow is opening day of whitetail gun season here in Ohio and a family tradition is for the menfolk to go over to my B-I-L's on Sat after Thanksgiving and confirm zero. Wyatt (Grandson the Elder) has been pestering me to go deer hunting this year. He turned 9 in Oct. I got him a 22 (a Rascal), but my back has been in poor shape and had't taken him for any shooting yet. After Thanksgiving dinner, my B-I-L said he was getting ready to sell the Mossberg 500 Youth model in 20 ga his son used while growing up (he's in college now. B-I-L got him a full sized 12 ga semi and the proceeds from the 20 ga are retroactively applied to the new piece). While the others took turns shooting, Wyatt was learning and dry firing the Mossberg. It's too much gun for him to shoulder or even shoot sitting. B-I-L's target berm is down slope, so prone was out, too. I ended up using my range bag atop an archery target so Wyatt could shoot sitting behind that as a rest. He only took 2 shots (not used to the recoil yet) and the attached photo shows his results at 50 yards. Those are his first from any firearm. Yeah, I am proud.

IMG 1 scaled.jpg

Great shooting, Wyatt! OK, I don't know about you all, but I think introducing a youngster to shooting for the first time is just about the best thing you can do. Do you have any young people, whether related or not, that you can take to the range? Thanks for sharing this outstanding story, Iron Mike Golf!

I'm pretty handy, but have never attempted anything like this! Our pal DBCooper has created a very cool shop, as the photos below will show. DBCooper explains:

Got to thinking that a lot of the Horde have mentioned not having a shop or many have run out of room for things. I took a 20 foot Shipping container and with simple techniques and skills and stuff from Home Depot built an extra shop. 4 inch foam insulation then hard faced, wiring and power strips installed, overhead 4 foot lights, cheap linoleum floor. Has water, a sink, phone and a 110 RV A/C and heater. Runs on a 20 amp 110. I built a 1000 lb inner armored wall with a Sea Door so it has a double locking entrance and is plenty secure. The photos were taken before the unfortunate canoe accident and now it's filled with rakes and weedeaters and shovels and my push mower. Wish now I had made a 40 footer for all my garden tools but I don't have a ton of money in it and it's my favorite place to hang out.

Shop 1 scaled.jpg

Shop 2 scaled.jpg

Shop 3 scaled.jpg

Shop 4 scaled.jpg

Ho-Lee-Shit! What a great job! I'm pretty impressed with how this turned out, and it makes me wonder if there would be a market for storage container conversions. Very nicely done, DBCooper!!

Link-O-Rama

Naturally, everything seems to be on sale at this time of year. Now is the time to do some shopping. Whether it's a gun you've been wanting, or an accessory you have needed, now is the time to save some money. I'm going to keep saying this until every last one of you pays attention, you almost certainly do not have enough ammo.

24 Nice shop, DBCooper.

I Merry Christmased myself a little early this year and got one of those oh-so-trendy wet tumblers. Done about 4, 4lb. batches of .45 so far and it works really well. I need to figure out the technique a bit so as to not use so much water for rinsing and also to work out a good method for drying.

On the not so fun side, I missed the local club F Class match again this month, this time due to having a nasty cold.

The boy doesn't like me. So, maybe teaching him to shoot will fix it. If not... at least he'll be trained, and the shootout will be interesting.

42 This week, I do my initial cleaning (recommended in the owner's manual) of my brand new Sig P365. First gun! Two people at church today invited me to participate in the community gun culture - - one offered to walk me through the cleaning process and the other offered to include me in their family's target practice! (Our church's OPSEC is really bad.) I just gotta get my final exam studying out of the way first.

Also, I learned something about the P365 that will improve my aim. I found out I'm supposed to cover the target spot with the dot on the front sight. I had been aiming so that the top edge of the front sight cut the target in half, so my shots were a little low.

Thanks to all you gun nuts for nudging me along. I finally did it!

Gotta look into that dry-fire mag thinnger up yonder.

Have a big backlog of brass prep to do. I only separate brass prep from reloading [on a turret press] for 3 calibers that require either lube, or trimming, or both [9mm, 30 carbine, 30-06]. Was going to try out the home-made lube recipes using lanolin/alcohol, but I've got some Lee lube to use up, then the Imperial wax, which looks like it will last an entire lifetime. Also, new this time, Imperial neck lube [the graphite in the media thing you stick the mouth down into], which will avoid at least one bit of drudgery with the 30-06.

67 O/T: actor Rene Auberjonois is mort from metastatic lung cancer at age 79. RIP.

From a bio: In 1970, Auberjonois played Father John Mulcahy, the military chaplain who played straight man to the doctors' antics, in M*A*S*H. It was his first significant film role and the first of several for director Robert Altman.

In his most famous exchange from the movie, Sally Kellerman's Margaret Houlihan wonders how such a degenerate doctor as Donald Sutherland's Hawkeye Pierce could reach a position of responsibility in the U.S. Army.

A bible-reading Auberjonois responds, deadpan: "He was drafted."

"I actually made that line up when we were rehearsing the scene," Auberjonois said on the podcast The Gist in 2016. "And it became a kind of an iconic line for the whole film."

72 Finally got the new Smith Bodyguard 39 special to the range and I'm pleased. Yeah, the trigger is heavy but manageable. Using Winchester white box 130 grain FMJ ammo (not my favorite) I was able to keep 2 to 3 inch groups at ten yards and the shots were close to center. Recoil was surprisingly controlable. Oddly, the better groups were done rapid fire.

For a 14 ounce snubby DA only, I am very pleased and reassured. It's only five shots but now I know they will go where I want if needed.

79 Paranoid rant:

I am suspicious about something. Clothing fabric has been getting thinner and clingier while the general population has become lumpier and sloppier. There is no aesthetic reason for this style evolution.

And don't get me started on the impossibility of pocket carry for women. The front pockets of my jeans are 4 inches deep. Back pockets are 5 inches.

Wearing tactical clothing built for carrying just advertises that you are carrying.

Anyway, is modern clothing designed to make it harder to conceal a weapon?

82 This week was the first time I got the Nambu Type 94 out to the range. The one I have was made in 1936 from what I can tell. Funny little pistol, the Japs made it for their air and tank crews as it is small and has small grips for small handed fellas. Chambered in 8 mm Nambu, it's like a .380 ACP with a lot less oomph.

It also has the reputation as the worst combat handgun ever made by anyone and with good reason. The trigger sear bar is exposed on the side of the pistol so you can shoot it with the trigger sear bar press or with the standard trigger pull. I didn't try this trick at the range though.

Sights are pretty crappy too. But when I shot it, it ran well and was accurate out to 40 feet. Light recoil and the trigger is actually nice and light and crisp.

Uses a funny rising block action, but it's Japanese so what the hell. A simple blow back would have accomplished the same thing.

Banzai!

85 Using a shipping container for ____ purpose isn't the thing that impresses.

D.B. Cooper's Execution of the Concept absolutely rocks it, though!

I'll add my keyboard to the chorus of compliments on the space planning. But you know what else shines in those photos?

Superior Craftsmanship. Sure, it's simple tables and shelves (looks furtively 'round for Ace), but there's not one bit of "wood-butchery" to be seen.

Everything is square, level and true.

Know what else impresses in there. That's a big Dillon 550 or 650 press over there in the back corner of things. We're talkin' damn near full on commercial ammo factory.

And that's only ONE of several presses visible on and under the worktops.

Question for D.B. How've you treated the exterior, both as to weatherproofing, but also as to "putting-off" the eyes of the curious?

Without getting into the crossbow/longbow argument about AK vs. AR (I prefer AK)...

The AK was designed so that even a peasant child could use it effectively. And, for the Serbian tactical version I have, I designed a super-comfortable buttpad made of silicone mattress-topper (and Gorilla Tape). A small boy can shoot it comfortably, in the extended or pistol-grip configuration.

I think it's probably a solid training-rifle.

120 Had an interesting day at the range.

Mark and I have been trying to do more than stand and make holes in the middle of a stationary target.

We went to the woods a couple of weeks ago and did some move and shoot at targets at different distances and with obstacles. The targets weren't moving, but we were.

It was all very choreographed. I could count my steps and my shots and know exactly what the next target was.

Yesterday, we numbered our targets and called them out to each other randomly. I had more trouble with this exercise. I had to listen, process, move, sight and then shoot.

Fascinating.

freaked - ammoseek.com - always, first step when ammo shopping online. At the moment, they show several inexpensive remanufactured [factory reload] options. You can specify brass case, new, etc. Always note the shipping cost item on the right - this varies greatly between vendors, often making the difference in best price.

And SGAmmo in OK often turns out to be the best. Their shipping is cheap and their service is great. TargetSportsUSA usually has free shipping for case lots. Many good options, and ammo is in a cheap phase, so stack 'em high.

Think about carrying somewhere besides the pocket. Inside the waistband (IWB) is a popular option. Some IWB holsters are slim and don't add much to the pistol's dimensions, others have breathable pads and two belt loops to help spread the weight and reduce irritation. There are even tuckable options where you can tuck a shirt in over the gun, behind the waistband. Another solution is cover garments, like loose shirts or sweaters that help break up the outline and keep it from printing.

This is what I use. I can tuck a button-down shirt in normally and it doesn't look any different from the other side where the shirt is bloused out a little from the belt just from moving around.

The cheap stuff on SGAmmo works well enough: Sellier & Bellot and Fiocchi. I also get Remington UMC and Winchester Service Grade.

I think Bl*zer has dirtier powder than other brands, and Winchester White Box gave me a dud or two out of a box of 500, so I avoid that one now.

My first firearm I shot was a Remington .30-06 bolt-action. It was SUPER cool for me. But it hurt like hell. I figure once the boy gets used to an AK-47, then he can play with Big Stuff.

When I first tried the AR-15, I was afraid of the kick, until I tried it, and found out it was nothing, though.

Maybe that's the way to go. Do the big stuff first.

I think Ralphie needs an AR pistol in 9mm, integrally suppressed with an 8 inch barrel and a folding stock. That's more his size. Plus... I wont one.

Can't speak to the .380.

But I had the .40 Thunder (a Chanukah gift from my dear old mom), that was fantastic. It was basically like a Beretta, but better built and more reliable.

Then my girlfriend's house got robbed while we were on vacation, the thieves got it, and then the police who caught them refused to give it back.

Had one and traded it. Watch for magazine issues. If you can put 200 rounds through without errors, you got a good one.

If you want a .380, Springfield Armory and Smith and Wesson make good ones. The Glock 42 is a wee pocket pistol, which may or may not work for folks, size wise.

Needless to say, I moved his hand up as unobtrusively as possibly.

I kidney IWB carry and I'm really careful about how I hug people. But, at 6' 3", I generally have to lean over which makes it easy to avoid someone finding something I'd rather they didn't.

Though, I was at a family gathering and got a side hug and SIL sad, loudly, "he's heeled" just like *insert name of nephew.*

It was amusing but, gun family, so, not like anyone freaked out or anything.

The first would be a long barrel K-32 Target Masterpiece in 32 long. I love the cartridge. I know Smith and Wesson made them but have never even seen one. Talk about unobtanium.

The other would be a S and W model 57 41 magnum with the 8 3/8' barrel. They exist but only at prices beyond sanity. A suitable variation would be a 14 " Contender barrel.

The 41 mag is my latest darling handgun cartridge, in case you couldn't tell.

253 > have you been to the range?

Yes!
Was on I-40 (New Mexico) and saw the billboard for Mags gun shop/range. They rent guns. Took the opportunity to try out a Glock 42 and 43.

Was my first time firing sub-compact pistols. They both worked well but I thought the 42 (a .380) had a nicer trigger and was easier to handle - even though the grip wasn't long enough for my pinky. My pinky fit on the 43 but the 42 was still better for me.

But I'd be happy with either so far as using them for self-defense.

Now I'm wondering how to choose between them. There's a lot of competition in the subcompact single-stack auto market but it seems impractical for me to try ALL of them out. I know the Glocks work well enough.

Another thing to consider is sitting. Riding in a car with a gun at the front of your waist is going to be an unpleasant experience. At your back, it's not as bad, but still pretty rough. I find just behind the hip, at about 4 o'clock, is the least obtrusive all around.

257 My son, who was on leave from the Marines, and I went to the Bristol Gun Club last Friday to shoot trap. My son shot well, I shot miserably. I blame the fact the I had cataract surgery and am getting used to my "new" eyes; though in truth I'm just a lousy shot, and I don't shoot often enough to get better at it. Still, it's a lot of fun. One of my 2020 New Year's resolutions is to go to the range more often, and become at least a mediocre shot.

If you want a .380 that's tiny, the G42 is owned by me and Nurse and others. It's small but it works well. Grip it tight, though. The gun doesn't have a lot of mass and it needs a tight grip to cycle the gun reliably.

If you want a small 9mm, if you want to stick with Glock, go with the Glock 43x rather than stock 43. Or the SIG 365 or Springfield Armory Hellcat if you want to venture out of Austrian goodness.

Along with full skirts, it appears that looser slacks are coming into style -- Think Lauren Bacall in the late 40's.

And you can carry off a suit sort of stylish jacket that certainly doesn't start with b*, or one of those newly stylish long sleeveless coat? You could carry a pistol and reload mags under those.

I loved baggy slacks in the 90's. I hate the current men's style of clothing fitting like a glove.

319 Nice job DB Cooper on the container and even better job equipping it.

For those that want form fitting insulation for shipping containers, try InSoFast and they ship to individuals. The stuff also has poly studs embedded into the insulation and channels for wiring/plumbing so that you can go directly over it with drywall. A slightly different version is great for basements which is the stuff I used.

On carry for a bike, you might want to look up Sneaky Pete's line as they have them looking like a smartphone or tablet holster for a belt (square instead of form fitting). I'd imagine that you might be able to carry without a second look by most folks.

This is the whole schtick now over at Hot Air, or The Dispatch, or any generic "Cuckland USA Newletter" for that matter, is that anything, and I mean anything, that sets the Dems teeth on edge is BAD BAD BAD! 325 Thanks for all the compliments. It's a cozy place to hang out. I have two Dillon 650's the plus the old RCBS. That Thompson is a semi auto I've shot once just to see if it would work. Kahr Arms or someone made them. The old rifles at the end are Garand, 98 Mauser, Mosin, Enfield Jungle Carbine, Jap Arisaka
I has an exit that you can't see and yep that's an eye wash station.

326 whig I like the idea of "deceptive" holsters that appear instead to be for the ubiquitous digital devices of our era. Clever. Don't carry, but for "open carry" that sounds like a nice option.

327 So, the son comes home from college on the 19th through the 3rd. "Dad, I really, really want to shoot a LOT when I am out there. 329 320 Wonder if I will ever get any glass - only have iron sights on everything, and don't want to mess with glass, dots, etc. But obviously my interests are in short to medium [practical] ranges. Latest teen craze at the club where I shoot matches seems to be red dots on 9mm semis. Now that to me would completely negate the point of these matches [short range, mix of steel and paper, movement/cover, varies quite a bit].

333 Speaking of holsters, anyone else seen the ridiculous ads on youtube for that oversize CCW flap "it's covered so it's concealed" holster?

I especially like the one where the guy is grabbing his gun out, while standing there facing a guy with a knife who's no more than about 10 feet away.

Good grief, if you're going to market a product like that, at least try for a plausible scenario.

Reality is: knife guy cuts gun guy apart before he's able to get the gun out.

Iron sights have the advantage of being extremely durable and low maintenance.

If you're able to shoot minute of bad guy at 200 yards with a rifle with iron sights, you're probably good to go for 90 percent of TSHTF times.

355 I am going to put out a pleg here--both pleading and begging. I started restoring a 1886/93 Lebel about 3-4 years ago and am down to a single bloody part for putting it all back together--it is a bolt connector.

I don't want anyone else's unless they have a spare but I would dearly love detailed pictures of one so that I could fabricate it if needed.

This is for the revised Lebel bolt as the bolt connector has a gas shield which was kinda important during the era of bad ammo. The usual parts warehouses are totally out and have been for years and even the auction sites rarely have Lebel parts. (This is not the later Berthier's that use a clip feeding system but fire the same Lebel round).

Rhomboid, I am all about camoflaging my carry and prefer very low key stuff. Mas Ayoob once called this art "weasel craft". I think that is fitting tribute to our AOS Weasel.

380 338, Weasel,

I find optics on rifles disturbing but make do if I want to shoot accurately at distance. I really prefer excellent iron sights on a rifle and it helps that I rarely shoot more than 100-200 yards. I shoot faster with the open sights but do better in precision with aperture sights. I have to use low powered scopes as I tend to get lost in the scope and it affects my perception of depth adversely.

Two of my favorites are the Tech Sights for my SKS and the 1903a3 ap sights.

Now, if I can just get my medical issues cleared up so I can go back to the range.

I've owned two and still own one. The one I still own is the most unreliable pistol I've ever run into. I'm sure it has never fired a full mag without some form of malfunction. The other one worked but reliability was not sufficient for an every day carry piece. It's in he box in the safe. Shame because it is decently made.

Well, I certainly qualify for old and grumpy and guy. And I agree. Part of the fun of handguns for me is seeing how well I can shoot them as intended. It's the same with my mil-surp rifles.

The one exception is having scopes on some Contender barrels, especially ones like 22 Hornet and 222 Remington varmint calibers. Designed for small targets beyond my old eyes. Also a 357 Maximum Contender meant to be used beyond 200 yards routinely. But Contenders are not handguns in the traditional sense. They are in their own category as far as I'm concerned..

397 364, I'm sure there are in France but Lebels are scarce, Berthiers are fairly common.

Ironically, and I did not intend it this way, but chance got me a 1916 GEW 98, 1916 SMLE aka No. 1, Mk 3* (shopped version), a 1916 Springfield 1903, and a 1916 Berthier a couple of years back during the centennial of WWI. Also have a P14 from that year. Had to restore each of them but parts are a lot easier to find for WWI era. The Lebel is from a generation earlier in firearms and most never made it here.

398 392 blake, that's my exact take on sights. Of course people's needs, plans, disciplines [hunting, F class, etc] can lead to widely varying situations. I don't plan on any shtf scenarios, just interested in getting good with these things as they were actually used in war time. Which was of course mostly at iron sight range.

404 393, It is just more fun to shoot them with iron sights to me as I don't like shooting from the bench. A far number of these old military rifles have a little kick and that is always worse for me recoil wise sitting at a bench shooting than standing.

The straight stock of the 1903 and most other military stocks of that vintage simply are not designed for optics so you have to do some stuff that is not so conducive to good neck health and I refuse to sporterize these. Far easier to shoot them as designed.

I also learned on iron sights to begin with which is probably why I prefer them.

424 406, Weasel, from what I've heard you have mad long distance shooting skills. Me, I'm a plodder and prefer to shoot at ranges where wind, bullets, etc. don't matter as much. Most of my poor old milsurps were rode hard and put up wet and worn bores usually shoot better with flat bottomed bullets and cast which kinda rules out long range.

The 1916 SMLE was fouled badly and cordite is not the best powder to put down a barrel. Nevertheless, I eventually discovered rifling after cleaning it with a kitchen sink (including electrolysis). Also got the hideous green paint that someone put on it which obscured all markings.

Turns out, it is a fairly rare early (Oct. 1916) shopped SMLE (made by a variety of subcontractors and put together by the prime one). Got to shoot it once before the troubles began and it did about 3-4 MOA with Prvi at 100 which is pretty good for a century old rifle with the original barrel. Alas, I did have to restock it though as someone put it in a poly stock.

Posted by: whig at December 08, 2019 09:29 PM (MwILh)

425 Farmer, not only is the microphone spying on you, but so is any location tracking. So if you carry your phone into a store, you may get ads for that store.

These things are designed to not be turned off. Some apps will even continue to collect information about you after you have deleted them!

About the only thing you can do is prevent the device from sending and receiving information. I think it was Zuck who would make his house guests put their phones in the fridge to prevent spying. (No signal in there.)

There are new phones and other devices coming out with privacy features, but they don't have all the conveniences you may be used to.

Had a devil of a time with a GEW 88 and fitting the safety/cocking piece/sear as the parts tolerances were rather generous at the time.

480 My long guns are a Mauser 48 ($79), an Enfield Mark 4 chambered for 308, a Winchester 38/357 lever action, and an old Winchester 62 inherited from my father. SW 36, and SW 65 are my handguns. Nothing beats a SW revolver for out of the box trigger pull.

Taste is subjective. If I shoot straight there will plenty of semi or auto to pick up if I'm alive come CW2.

481 I know it's late and Ima have to get a move on, but THIS I can't resist "It may just be that I'm just an old grumpy guy, but I find optics and laser sights on handguns distracting.

Weasel, ThanX! for putting up with us and shosting this episode every week. I've got to go on the road again for a bit, but when I get back I'll send you some stuff about 1) a 300 blackout mod for my 1911 2) a shoulder rig that you'll like for it from a local guy and c) mounting an extended eye relief scope on it. Again, many ThanX!

McGyver, out

482 478 I am looking at AR options.
Bravo Company is impressing me.

Palmetto State Armory is still in the running.

I have also got an option for a discounted stock Bushmaster.

Any advice?

Palmetto State if you're on a budget.

Bravo Company or Knight's Armament if you aren't.

Bushmaster I'd rank below the Ruger 556 and S&W Sport 2. But it's better than nothing.

483 Saw a comedy sketch this weekend in which Little Ralphie got an AR-15 instead of a BB gun. He used it to take out the Bumpus dogs. And Mr. Bumpus.
.
To be fair, they had it coming.

484 I think the admin of this website is truly working hard for his
web site, for the reason that here every material is
quality based material.
