105 My guess is that the painting is covered because a man of the household - perhaps the old lady's son, and the young woman's husband - is lost or missing at sea, and the sight of the painting is a painful reminder. The poor dog is a hint that the young woman is sexually frustrated, as her man has been gone a long time, but unless she knows she's a widow, she can't remarry.

114 This is one weird picture. They have a black and white painting in the wall, covered by drapes. One woman has lost one shoe. There is a dwarf dog. And an empty cartridge on the floor. And the standing woman's bucket is marked with huge arrows (presumably meaning "This End Up").

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at December 12, 2019 09:53 AM (/sgva)

115 My guess is that the painting is covered because a man of the household - perhaps the old lady's son, and the young woman's husband - is lost or missing at sea, and the sight of the painting is a painful reminder. The poor dog is a hint that the young woman is sexually frustrated, as her man has been gone a long time, but unless she knows she's a widow, she can't remarry.

I've been away for a couple days. A cold, or maybe this one is sinusitis, swept down from the Siberian steppes and knocked me flat. I stayed home from work for 3 days, getting up at 6 (which is late for me) but finding myself nodding over my TV show or book and toddling back off to bed at 9, then rising again at 11, and napping 1:30-3:00. Then bed, again, at 9. Do you know how boring home can be when you can't watch TV or read? And no, I'm comparing Internet packages now, and don't have it at home. That's got to change soon.

I'm in to work for about 3 hours here, and maybe I'll contribute to the Morning Rant.

I didn't know it was a thing. I was probably 10 years old and I had never seen a woman with no eyebrows! Creepy. She was super sweet, one of those great aunties that put on way too much perfume and super red lipstick and she'd always have to give you a huge kiss on the cheek so you'd have it all over your face at Christmas. She lived to be 90 something and was pretty spry. She was a dear woman. But had her quirks. Her hair was also still "amazingly" jet black at the age of 80 something. My dad showed me some old family pics not long ago and I had never seen her as a younger woman, she was actually stunningly beautiful. I just remembered her as the Aunt with no eyebrows.

170 At first I thought this was a Vermeer. It has that feel and arrangement but didn't seem quite 'Vermeerish'.

The artist's talent is obvious and interesting. I like the look of natural light he shows and the detail to the extent it matters.

I suspect, strongly, there is a lot going on in the scene I don't understand but the viewers of the time would have. The room is rather plain and spartan. The tile in the lower right looks like a repair, not a feature. The platform the woman sits on is unfinished wood. The one shoe and the thimble on the floor is an odd, almost slovenly, touch. The woman reading is fashionable, as Kris pointed out, but her clothing is not highly ornate. Is she trying for a rich 'look' and not quite getting there? Also, why is the servant woman looking at the covered painting? Is she hoping the man of the house returns quickly to take control of the young woman so she doesn't have to?

It's an interesting painting, at least to me. As I looked at it I kept coming up with scenarios it suggests.

Especially Lee and Cruz, who typically spend more time eliciting information. Questions not asked were who knew and when. Did you interview James Comey - if not why not. Is it possible he could have known this etc.

I wonder if they just thought outrage was more important than information - probably so but still you want to use that to get information. Or if they have more trust that Barr is getting the information, so what they needed to gin up more than anything was outrage.

Thanks to everyone for your sympathetic comments last night.

Talker was our Whippet. We got him many years ago as a show dog for me. He came out of a famous show kennel which is notorious as an overdogged puppy mill. Having paid a pretty penny for him, Her Majesty was never able to get his papers from them, so he could never be shown.

So he was neutered and lived out his life here. We're not even sure how old he was. 16 is our best guess.

He was in good health up to the end but over the last couple of days he stopped eating and didn't want treats. Last night he couldn't get up. I took him in and the vet and I concluded that at his age we would be temporizing if we went for aggressive treatment.

He slipped away quietly with me talking to him and stroking him. Rest well, little guy. And wait.

From a guy I know on Facebook:

"If you are a UK citizen in the UK today, please vote. As a Brit who has lived for more than 15 years outside the UK, I cannot vote. Nor can the 3 million EU citizens resident in the UK. They're not scrounging off the state, as some, who would blame anyone else but themselves for the problems we have, would have you believe. Those EU citizens are waking up under a cold, grey, sky, and trudging off to work to pay taxes and contribute to their country of residence, just as any of their neighbours. Myself, well, I'm not retired and lounging under the sun drinking Stella. I'm working through the night, while you are sleeping in your warm beds, in order to support my family, pay taxes and contribute to and integrate myself within the EU society that is graceful enough to host me. I can't vote here, I'm not allowed, and I can't vote there, as UK politicians decided that approximately 5 million of us, 3 in the UK and 2 in continental Europe, should be denied the vote in both the Brexit referendum and any general election that could decide Brexit."

Translation:

"I don't live in Britain, though I was born there. I have no direct stake in whether Britain stays in the EU. I prefer the EU to Britain so much that I moved to the EU 15 years ago and won't move back to Britain. Because of that, Britain must validate my life choices and help straighten out my tax situation by staying in the EU."

334 The insulation that the donor class has in spending that they like has to be jettisoned before you can really tackle entitlements politically.

That is, every single discretionary savings must be wrung out before you can even think of touching Medicare and Social Security (along with related things like Military Retirement etc.). That has been the Swamp's go to plan to stymie entitlements because they refuse to cut discretionary things like the NEH, the Dept. of Ed., PBS, NPR, Postal Service, welfare, etc.

Social Security is the easier political lift with moving up the retirement age to 70 by a series of months and either increasing the penalty by retiring at 62 or moving early retirement up to something like 64-65. Medicare though is the big one as spending cuts can easily be shown to result in the Liverpool Doctrine type behavior by organizations--e.g. the rather heartless let the elderly die and be replaced. Medicare taxes are no where the amount needed to build any type of surplus. Thus, taxes must be raised and/or spending cut.

A diverse society actually makes it harder to reach accord on things like budgets because our social trust levels are dropping. The split between elites and commoners also has destroyed trust in the ruling class. Governments can only do difficult things if they are trusted by the populace that the measures taken are necessary in the long run. In a society with little trust, people want their goodies up front and to hell with the long term.

My guess is that they use debt suppression tactics as they did in post war US after WWII with stealth inflation to eat away at the dollar's external valuation (devalue our currency)--that is more common in history than drastic cuts.

Eh, I think the way the EU took it originally, with the founding and growth of the New Republic and New Jedi order, was the way to go. I always wondered who was going to pay all those Imperial soldiers. In Roman times, after all, the Emperor was the armies' paymaster. If something like that held in SW, then all of a sudden your paymaster is gone. Are we going to cashier lots of soldiers, stormtroopers, star pilots, and "coordinators"? If so, they'll flood into the cities on a thousand planets, looking for work, and causing trouble. Big unemployment problem, probably some bandit problems.

Leia was of accredited noble blood. She could have become the leader of the Senate, with Luke and Han as right-hand men and troubleshooters, bringing the rogue planets who still preferred the Empire into the new republic's fold, which might take a little shooting. In the old EU the empire didn't immediately collapse, though fleet admirals and moffs in many areas became independent warlords. There was some effort by stronger players to keep the empire as a unified country(?), and the new republic contested primarily with them, and later the remaining independent warlords.
