The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"Democrats and their progressive media allies shrieking about Russia 24/7 need to step back and listen to themselves. And knowing a little history wouldn't hurt. Back in the 1950s, they used to laugh at the Birchers who were finding commies hiding under every bed. And who also made the claim that President Eisenhower was self-consciously a Soviet agent. That last bit was the straw that broke the camel's back for William F. Buckley, who barred anyone associated with the John Birch Society from appearing in his National Review magazine.

He thus booted them from the conservative movement. And it worked. The John Birch Society was effectively marginalized to this day.

"Well, that was then, this is now. The progressives do not have anyone like Buckley, no voice of reason or sanity who can stand athwart history, yelling 'STOP!'

"And since the only way to maintain a conspiracy theory against the evidence of facts and logic is by expanding it, they just keep getting crazier and crazier. Look at those WaPo headlines. One Republican after another gets declared a Russian asset, and then the *entire party* gets labelled a Russian asset, and there is no evidence that any editor at the WaPo ever said, 'Wow, this is just crazy talk' or 'We need to dial it back a bit, otherwise we'll sound like a bunch of kooks and lose the confidence of our readers.'

They're all on board the crazy train, and there's no brakes."

(h/t Nathan Brand for the WaPo headlines)

This whole reboot stuff from 30 years ago is pretty new.

Before, it was the odd sequel like The Color of Money (sequel to The Hustler) or Saraband (sequel to Scenes from a Marriage).

The closest from decades past may be Bond changing from one movie to the next and no one mentioning it.

In terms of franchises today that continue despite failures, there are a handful. Superman Returns acted like Superman III and IV never happened. The newest Halloween acted like none of the sequels since the original Halloween happened. The newest Terminator acted like nothing after Terminator 2 happened.

That's Not How This Works

Actually, yes it is. The left only knows one way to have trials: show tribunals. You're already guilty, the trial is for them to demonstrate their virtue, warn others, and create an atmosphere of terror.

The college tribunals where they don't evenallow the accused to present a case, the Soviet trials where you're guilty, and the trial is merely to establish HOW guilty. Obviously you must be guilty, the people in power say you are, and they cannot be wrong. To even question this is yet another crime.

109 Movie actors ARE pretty stupid. Truman Capote made the same point. It's to their advantage. The camera is absolutely unforgiving when it comes to anything that looks like "acting" or self-consciousness. That's the problem both Olivier and Streep have. They're both brialliant actors, but we can see them acting. Works great on the stage. Not so much in film. Olivier strikes some poses in "Hamlet" that make you want to run head-first into a tree, without a helmet. That's why Katherine Hepburn told Hopkins--"Don't act. Just read the lines."

A sizable number of Harvard types and other Democrats got rich off the "loans for shares" program after the fall of the Soviet Union, which transferred the assets of the Soviet state into the hands of a handful of oligarchs, with minimal benefit to ordinary people (who were supposed to be the beneficiaries of the program).

This was a major reason why you got Putin - the Harvard-sponsored transition to capitalism in Russia functioned pretty much the way Communist propaganda said it would.

They say this even as indictments are coming down for many Americans involved in money running out of Ukraine, and the clear prima facie evidence of Joe/Hunter taking millions in bribes (influence money) is widely known. Old Joe bragged about his clout.

But can they work up to Soros, and open the books on his propaganda enterprise, that reaches into 100 different influence operations?

Influence Ops are a BFD, they are foundational to how our FBI/CIA works covertly to dirty up their enemies (like Trump). It is the whole of the Fake News Industry (war on traditional America) ... and the whole coup is one giant influence op, working right within the DC corridors of influence peddling and sedition. It sways elections globally, and domestically.

137 This is just devastating. Trump should end this now. Note how much the Obama years made it worse.

Off the Record, U.S. Officials Acknowledge our Strategy in Afghanistan Is "Fatally flawed" https://t.co/EQmd0Asoa9

...Over in that faraway, deeply troubled country, the American taxpayer has paid for soybeans that won't grow, weapons that Afghan military forces lost, a $2.9 million farming-storage facility that was never used, and a $456,000 training center that "disintegrated" within four months. An Afghan power plant that the U.S. helped build was operating at just 2.2 percent of power production capacity. The SIGAR office round that significant portion of the U.S.-built buildings for the Afghan military are more flammable than international building codes permit. (Hey, why would you need to worry about burning buildings in a country at war, right?)

Inspector General John Sopko... uncovered waste, mismanagement, corruption, and all kinds of problems that no one wants to see, whatever their view of the war in Afghanistan.

...Heavy losses in the poppy-growing province of Helmand have required rebuilding an Afghan army corps and replacing its commander and some other officers as a result, a U.S. general said, of 'a combination of incompetence, corruption, and ineffectiveness.'"

...U.S. officials acknowledged that their warfighting strategies were fatally flawed and that Washington wasted enormous sums of money trying to remake Afghanistan into a modern nation."

Judging from the report, the more the United States tried to fix Afghanistan, the more they complicated and worsened existing problems.

During the peak of the fighting, from 2009 to 2012, U.S. lawmakers and military commanders believed the more they spent on schools, bridges, canals and other civil-works projects, the faster security would improve. Aid workers told government interviewers it was a colossal misjudgment, akin to pumping kerosene on a dying campfire just to keep the flame alive...

In public, U.S. officials insisted they had no tolerance for graft. But in the Lessons Learned interviews, they admitted the U.S. government looked the other way while Afghan power brokers - allies of Washington - plundered with impunity.

...The expectations got ratcheted down a little more, hoping that the Afghan government would get a little closer to something resembling a functioning state that would not collapse the moment we left.

It is not for lack of trying or lack of studying and attempting to adapt our efforts to be effective within the local culture. In 2010, the Pentagon started assembling Cultural Support Teams, a secret pilot program to insert women alongside Special Operations soldiers battling in Afghanistan. The Army reasoned that women could play a unique role on Special Ops teams: accompanying their male colleagues on raids and, while those soldiers were searching for insurgents, questioning the mothers, sisters, daughters and wives living at the compound.

The United States has allocated more than $133 billion to build up Afghanistan - more than it spent, adjusted for inflation, to revive the whole of Western Europe with the Marshall Plan after World War II. Since 2001, more than 775,000 U.S. troops have deployed to Afghanistan, many repeatedly. Of those, 2,300 died there and 20,589 were wounded in action, according to Defense Department figures.

The solution to this obvious. This is a clear-cut case of market failure.

The only thing to do is to permit Hollywood to make their woman-hating pap for general sale, but to ensure a federal subsidy for right-thinking films and will be guaranteed wide distribution.

If this fails to spark the right kind of responses, audiences will be selected by lottery, using the jury pool in each locale with a movie theater. Attendance will be mandatory. Tweeting or reviewing will be forbidden.

Well they ARE doing their best to recreate the Middle Ages in urban areas controlled by Leftists, by encouraging homeless encampments resulting in those areas becoming open sewers of human waste. Which leads to typhus and plague and all sorts of diseases not seen in the civilized west in hundreds of years. Yay! Ren-fair cosplay for realsies!

I actually sat and cried reading his father's statement.

21 y.o. Airman Apprentice Cameron Walters graduated Great Lakes on November 22, and hadn't been at Pensacola Naval Station but a brief time. He was following in his retired Navy dad's footsteps.

On Thursday night, he and his dad video chatted. His father said his boy proudly told him he had passed the exam qualifying him to stand watch and help secure building entrances at NAS.

When news broke the next morning of shots being fired at the base, Shane Walters called his son's cellphone repeatedly throughout the day. There was no answer. He learned later his son was standing watch at the classroom building when he was killed.

God bless and comfort that dad and family. I can't even imagine.

b) Kelly Preston
c) Kelly Bundy

Kelly Bundy was pretty hot back in the day. Can we get an honorable mention for Kellyanne Conway? Smart, fun personality, hardworking...seems like the perfect 'ette.

327 Training will be recommended.

I know a number of Federal employees, and it is astonishing how much "training" they do.

This is because any time the Federal government screws up in some fashion, the default solution is to mandate more training.

329 I'm a broken record on the subject, but a big ol'
universe should allow a Ghostbusters movie to not be about good guys
shooting things with magic backpacks (or death stars, or planet
destroying supervillains, etc)

Kids investigating a cave, or a religious experiment, or who knows
what. I'm pro-magic backpacks, but man, I'd love to have some well
written thought experiments.

331 Pretty amazing to watch this weekend the protesters in Hong Kong after six months of pro-democracy protests sing the national anthem while waving American flags. Contrast that to the evil in our politics, media, and Hollywood.

I'd say what really clenched it was when they realized that Russia's new system, flawed as it is, wasn't going to collapse back into communism. For a while, they were able to live in denial... there was still a strong Communist Party, and they thought it would win and the USSR would be reborn.

338 Right, and it was just a coincidence that the person who helped her "find" that job was Valerie Jarrett, who was (maybe still is?) on the board of the U. of Chicago hospital. Always nice when your husband's political handler and so-close-she's-like-family friend does that for you. *wink, wink*

Posted by: Lizzy at December 09, 2019 11:56 AM (bDqIh)
---------------------------

Not to put too fine a point on it, but only the "right person" could tell the angry neighbors that they had to shut up and accept the loss of the ER.

Somebody who checked all the right boxes, including having the right last name?

The hospital was losing money hand over fist, and wanted out from under the burden of running a Level I ER in a mostly diverse neighborhood. Those ER's are usually full of people who don't pay, but not just "anybody" can tell the neighbors to shut the hell up and beat it. This is something Larry Elder could explain better than I can.

343 Wonder Woman 1975 trailer is just confusing. OK looks like the 80s, more or less, but what the heck is going on?

355 Figured I'd willow this and wake ace up.

Does anyone really expect the Dems to pay a serious price for their literally unbelievable and despicable behavior?

It's not 1972, or even 1980. Barring big black swans they've had little chance for the WH for a while. But they'll possibly even hold the House.

And the GOP will remain the same, based on current trends. Recall that the more ridiculous the Dems, the less responsive the GOP has to be. "What, you're going to vote for THEM? Oh, actually, no, we have no agenda and will not be tying ourselves to real objectives, thanks for asking."
