Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: Sunday After Thanksgiving Edition [Weasel]First up, we have a question from our pal and delightful 'ette Emmie who sent in the following: Would you share your views on a Sig P365 with or without a safety for belly carry, please? I bought one without a safety yesterday and then discovered it was available with a safety and the store will exchange it for me since I haven't used it. I am nervous about carrying without the extra security against accidental discharge. How about it, what's your advice for Emmie? Safety or no safety? My advice was to get the one she'd be most comfortable with and would be most likely to carry. What do you all think? Am I a retard? Anyone feel strongly one way or another? I’m lucky enough to live in Constitutional Carry Arizona, and less than 10 miles from one of the largest public outdoor ranges in the country. And while I go to the range a few times a month, when it isn’t convenient, or it’s just too damn hot, I practice in the comfort of my home with a G-Sight 9mm Luger Training Laser Cartridge and the free app that tracks laser hits on any paper target. A $40 investment allows you to practice anywhere, and eliminates the cost of ammo to supplement live fire training. You just insert the laser cartridge in your personal firearm, fire up the app, point your device at the target, hit start and then every time you pull the trigger, a short blast of red laser hits the target, your phone or iPad or iPhone makes a ding sound as if you’re shooting steel, and it captures where you hit the target. You can shoot from across the house, upstairs to downstairs, from behind cover, after a concealed carry holster draw, while moving... you name it, and thus imitate real-life scenarios. All from the comfort of home and without the expense of ammo. Or you can skip the target altogether and just shoot various things around your house - you can see the red flash hit what you’re aiming at and verify by sight how well you hit what you were aiming at. If you have a Glock or other striker fired pistol, you do have to rack the slide for every trigger pull, but if your firearm has a hammer, just keep pulling the trigger and racking up hits on target. For your readers who can’t get to the range or want to save on ammo, this is a great tool. I've gotten some conflicting information about this Remington model 4 .22. It's in need of some freshening up but it still shoots accurately. At first I thought it was a garden gun made for shooting birds in a barn without shooting holes in the walls but the barrel is rifled. It's been on the family farm, a Texas Century Ranch, for as long as anyone in my family can remember. Does anyone in the AOS Community know anything about it and others like it? Well My nephew and I went to the range yesterday, Stayed about an hour as it was a bit chilly outside and my nephew had to get back home to do the cooking for Thanksgiving Part II.
I was able to put 90 rounds down range at about 8 or 9 yards, Still a little low, left but I am obliterating the target in that area. I will send pictures to the gun thread for next week. All in all I was very happy with my grouping. We had brought my nephews .308 and AR15 in .223 but did not have time to use them. Posted by: Scuba_Dude at December 01, 2019 07:07 PM (ZfBVE) 12
On the 365, assuming it is carried in a pocket holster that covers the trigger, should not make a difference. Though, for all around use I would probably go with the safety if the price is the same. One can also retrofit a safety on the gun with a kit Sig sells. BTW I tried one of there, extraordinarily accurate gun.

The Remington model 4 was introduced in 1890 and discontinued in 1933. It's a rolling block action single shot and can handle 22 shorts, longs and long rifle.
The rollng block is a simple, utterly reliable action and goes back to the 1870s. A ot of the buffalo hunters of that period used them in 45-70 and bigger. Hope this helps. Posted by: JTB at December 01, 2019 07:13 PM (bmdz3) 23

I decided to get the safety for several reasons:
I realize that a holster covers the trigger, but as a new shooter, I do not know how clumsy I will be when drawing and holstering. Some people have shot themselves when catching their gun on their shirt. I also have zero practice not trying to catch a dropped gun. My natural impulse is to catch anything I see falling. It looks like releasing the safety can be part of the process of getting one's grip, with very little extra time. Apparently, some people have benefited from having the safety on when someone has taken their gun. It takes the bad guy a few seconds to figure out why it won't shoot, which allows more time for escape. I do not have children in the house, but there is a household member who will be allowed to touch my gun, but has an ingrained tendency to do stuff without thinking it through. A safety may help avoid a mishap. Posted by: Emmie at December 01, 2019 07:18 PM (87gB3) 29
I don't like external safety switches.
1. If I have one, I might use it. If I use it, I might start to trust that it will work. One should never trust that a mechanical safety will work. 2. If I have one, I might use it. If I use it, I might overlook it in case I need to use the weapon in a hurry. I don't like putting unnecessary obstacles between myself and emergency equipment functioning as expected. I have enough things to remember. If I want a weapon to fire, I pull the trigger. If I don't want it to fire, I keep my finger away from the trigger. Anyway, that's how I look at it, thanks for listening, God bless. Posted by: hogmartin at December 01, 2019 07:19 PM (t+qrx) 30

Snowing, so no range today, waahhh !
Bought ammo on Black Friday sale, .45 & 9mm, yay ! To Emmie's question, over the summer I CC'd a Sig P290 quite a bit, kind of a predecessor of the P365 and w/o safety. Has a long double-action-only trigger pull that I did not think was particularly unsafe, in fact I kind of liked it because the operation is very similar to the DAO J-frame snubbie I usually carry, just aim and fire with a long pull. Simple and straightforward, and I have very long-established habits of keeping fingers out of the trigger guard when carrying in my coat pocket, etc. That said, Emmie, if you don't feel okay without the safety then make the trade; first and foremost you need to feel comfortable and safe with your gun. I am only comfortable carrying a striker fired concealed gun (in my case, a Walther PPQ) if I am not wearing winter attire or am carrying in a high risk area. Otherwise, I want a thumb-operated safety. Also, I do not recommend no safety if there is a holster retention strap. The only safe alternative is not carrying in full battery. That Sig P365 was a good fit for my hand. The rental I tried shot the tightest group of all the guns I tried, but all shots were a little to the left and below the center of the target.
I'm assuming this means that the gun can be consistently aimed and that either the sight was slightly off or my technique needs work. Well, I know my technique needs work! Posted by: Emmie at December 01, 2019 07:27 PM (87gB3) 50

Cabelas is having a sale on the S and W 38 special Bodyguard DA only revolver. It's rated for plus-P ammo. A hundred bucks off the usual price and I got a rebate as well. The thing is incredibly light, 14 ounces unloaded and will no doubt kick a bit but should be manageable. It followed me home Thanksgiving day. The trigger is better than I expected. I just put a Hogue grip on it. That grip is very slightly bigger and should provide a bit of cushioning compared to the stock grips which are hard plastic.
I hope to get to the range a couple of times this week to test it out from about 21 feet to 25 yards. BTW, this is the model without the built-in laser. For carry purposes, I think the laser is not needed. Posted by: JTB at December 01, 2019 07:28 PM (bmdz3) 53

Safety first!
I went to the range Wednesday and had a rifle slam fire on me. I put it on safe, dropped the magazine and the bolt had already locked to the rear. This was on a Vz 58 chambered in 5.56mm. Disassembled the rifle and checked the bolt for the firing pin rattle, then reassembled her and loaded a new magazine and sent the bolt home. Bam!....I had a out of battery misfire as there was still a round in the chamber left over from the slam fire and when the new round tried to go into battery it detonated the round left in the chamber. As I always keep my muzzle pointed in a safe direction, down range, nothing came of it but a hot blast of 5.56mm air to my face and a broken shell in the chamber. I was very fortunate and even though no one was around em-bare-assed. I forgot the most basic safety check which is check for a clear chamber when you perform an immediate/remedial action. Safety, safety, safety. Stay safe out there people. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at December 01, 2019 07:31 PM (Z+IKu) 58

Posted by: Weasel at December 01, 2019 07:26 PM (MVjcR) Yes, honestly. The fewer controls to remember, the easier it is to learn and become proficient. But in this case, since Emmie is already uncomfortable with the idea of not having one, I'm not going to tell her how to run the show. But remember that one of the most common recommendations for a new shooter is a DA revolver, and one of the reasons cited is often that the controls are so simple. They almost never have external safeties and rely on a positive trigger pull to prevent negligent discharge, same as a striker pistol. Posted by: hogmartin at December 01, 2019 07:31 PM (t+qrx) 59

Question: Is this video real? Or faked?
Joe Biden at an event two days ago talking about kids rubbing his hairy legs, kids sitting on his lap, and cockroaches: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-quyw6ys8Qk Joe Biden: "And by the way I sit on a stand, I got hot, I got hairy legs that turn, that, that, that, turn blond in the sun. And the kids used to come up and reach in and pull and rub my legs, and watch the hairs rise up again. So I learned about roaches. I learned about kids jumping up on my lap. And I love kids jumping on my lap." Looks and sounds very real, and it's the kind of thing Biden is prone to saying. But is it a "deep fake," or like the bad lip-reading videos? Re: Sig P365: I like it, but in my case I'd like to see if I can get a mag extension along the lines of the one I got for my Glock 26. But if your hand fits around it and no such modifications are needed: go for it. It's compact and it shoots well. One caveat - my theory is that virtually all firearms work perfectly well and it's just a matter of what works for the shooter. I liken guns to shoes. They may look cool but if they jack your feet up, there's no sense in wearing them, right?
Give the P365 a spin at the range to be absolutely sure, if your nearby range has one you can rent, but I do recommend it. Very compact, and effective. If I can get mag extensions, I'll get one myself. Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at December 01, 2019 07:35 PM (dJGLL) 68

Heh, as long as the holes are in the front, scatter the spent rounds 10 ft. from the recently deceased.
Revolver. No thrown brass to police. Though I am trying to picture the scenario where holes will legitimately be in front at 25 yards. In urban areas that is the equivalent distance of shooting someone in their front yard a couple houses over. At night, you won't even see the weapon. I would be running for cover knowing that the assailant has near zero chance of hitting me on the move. Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at December 01, 2019 07:38 PM (lD3vL) 77

But in this case, since Emmie is already
uncomfortable with the idea of not having one, I'm not going to tell her how to run the show. But remember that one of the most common recommendations for a new shooter is a DA revolver, and one of the reasons cited is often that the controls are so simple. They almost never have external safeties and rely on a positive trigger pull to prevent negligent discharge, same as a striker pistol. Posted by: hogmartin at December 01, 2019 07:31 PM (t+qrx) --- As one of those weird guys that still carries a revolver (or did, until the canoe trip, etc.) I'm on the same page as Hogmartin. I agree with Hogmartin about keeping things simple and that was one of the reasons for my new purchase of a DA only revolver. Emmie, go with what makes you feel good. After you have more experience, you may make a different decision.
For example, I carry a Ruger LCP without a safety, because it takes about a full one inch heavy pull to light it off and is double action only. I also carry a SW 9 mm with a safety because it is single/double action. If I carry with a round in the chamber like the LCP I like a safety because it is a light trigger pull. Then he starts on a 14-minute long rambling virtue-signalling monologue about how back in segregation days all the black people thought Joe Biden was the coolest-ever white dude -- "He's one of us! -- in a very klutzy attempt to ingratiate himself with black voters. And he goes off on some weird story about a black hoodlum named "Corn Pop" who tried to jump in the pool while wearing black-hair pomade, and Joe, who was the lifeguard, had to kick him out, and they had some kind of fight, but in the end all the black folks just loved ol' whitey Joe. And then he goes WAY off script talking about how all the little black kids in the swimming pool where he was the lifeguard would rug his hairy legs up and down to watch his long blond hairs float in the water, and then they're jump in his lap, "So I learned about roaches," "And I love kids jumping on my lap." Anyone who has carried a 1911 over the years is well familiar with the proper use and operation of the manual safety.
One thing I do with any 1911 I own, is to upgrade the safety plunger spring to a more effect a more positive pressure against the safety. This provides a more assertive "click", when moving the safety lever from "Safe" to "Fire", or back. And it also holds the safety lever into "Safe" more reliably than a softer spring allows. Not to think though, that even a stronger spring ASSURES a "safe" condition. The only REAL safety resides between the ears. But a manual safety isn't a negative, it's merely a training issue. Emmie? I will say this though. Once you've got the gun you want, MARRY it (figuratively), for at least six months of concentrated training with THAT GUN, and THAT GUN ONLY. Avoid muddying the making of your muscle memory while training, by avoiding mixing in other guns and systems, unless it just a VERY few rounds with another platform, just to see how it feels. But don't train with any other gun. Yours, and yours only. Until it's as second nature as brushing your teeth, then you've still got a ways to go. Get what you're comfortable with and what you'll carry.
I've got a 9mm and a .45 with good holster and they feel good and all but I just don't bother carrying them cause i have to put them on. So I went and got a Taurus Spectrum 380 and this thing I can just stick in my pocket like a cell phone and walk out. So now I'm carry more often and feel a lot better about it. No safety but it's a DAO and the trigger pull is enough so it would take some special situation for the trigger to get pulled and fire without a deliberate action. I'm a bit edgy about it being a 380 but to go small that's just about what you have to do. And btw, I did not get one of the all colorful and shit ones. I'll leave that for others more style concious. I did have to settle for a flat green accent on black cause they don't make a complete black one. I think they don't. I never saw one. My LCP 2 only has a trigger lever safety. I practice keeping the booger hook out of the trigger housing unless I want a round to exit. The 1911 has an external mechanical thumb safety and I carry it cocked and locked like Mr. Browning intended me to. I generally don't use manual safeties even on guns with them because when I'm at the range (which is the only time I'm loading them) I intend to shoot. And, as mentioned before, my carry guns don't have them. This got me into a bit of difficulty when the Air Force decided that it was time to restart rifle qualification. The solution this problem is to develop platform-specific behaviors, so now when I use my AR (which is underwater, after the accident), I use the same drill we used at the range, complete with the safety. Bloomberg is a pusillanimous pipsqueak and the more that spreads the less he has a chance. Either way his money will be a danger we need to recognize.
His comments on the poor and his record in NY I believe will do him in. He's an example of a rich man trying to buy an office. Of more danger (at the edge so far) is Michelle Obama. If she entered the race, all bets are off on Trump being able to overcome her advantages. (yes she's got disadvantages but not so noticeable) She would definitely bring out the vote on both sides. And the race would be even more filled with acrimony. And then there's the other danger of the social corps and regular corps influencing the race through propaganda, outright denial of people to speak and throttling the truth from being known. And they have a LOT of money. This is definitely a turning point for the nation. Posted by: jakee308 - Hylozoist at December 01, 2019 08:23 PM (cxIsI) 217

As concerns the sig p365, I have one with the manual safety, and highly recommend that addition, as it makes it a better gun for self defense.
This is because the pistol itself is quite small, with a rather abbreviated grip. Add to this a fairly light trigger with a short pull and trouble rears its head. If you keep it with a round in the chamber (as you should) it is easy to see how a quick grab under stress can result in a negligent discharge, especially if you're accessing the gun from a glove box, or from a nightstand while just woken from sleep. The safety works as it should, ala 1911, and will not slow you down when you want to shoot. Plus if someone who shouldn't picks it up, the first thing they do is pull the trigger. This helps prevent tragedies. Posted by: eastofsuez at December 01, 2019 08:24 PM (U2zca) 219

The safety works as it should, ala 1911, and will not slow you down when you want to shoot. Plus if someone who shouldn't picks it up, the first thing they do is pull the trigger. This helps prevent tragedies.
Posted by: eastofsuez at December 01, 2019 08:24 PM (U2zca) These were some of my thoughts. My only concern is that I was unable to handle a P365 with a safety to see how difficult it was to disengage with my rather short thumb. Posted by: Emmie at December 01, 2019 08:27 PM (87gB3) 229

I hope you ate too much, drank too much, made liberals cry, and otherwise enjoyed yourselves. ------- I did everything but the last thing. And, happily. Mannix and myself and the baby-momma went to the parents' in Tennessee. I just got home. The barking-mad Leftist members of the family deeply dislike us, and could barely be dragged to Thanksgiving when we were in the neighborhood, and now that they're 1400mi away - not a chance. Awesome! And now they're close to one of the only other (relatively) sane family units, who did come out. It was great. As for Thanksgiving gun stuff - here's a funny story. We drove, and I had to roll out of the rack at the crack of dawn and go. After we were in KS, I remembered that I hadn't packed my .45 in my briefcase (as I do every day) because I had been so groggy. FAIL! I was pissed. Then, my brother dropped the bomb... the hotel was in St. Louis! Unarmed in St. Louis. NIGHTMARE. Then, when we got there, I realized that I'd been so groggy that I'd just absentmindedly packed it in the front section of my suitcase instead. RELIEF + Mild Embarrassment. Posted by: blake - semi lurker in marginal standing at December 01, 2019 07:49 PM (WEBkv) WA state also went all blue in the last election, the Repubs finally lost control of the Senate. They already have a stack of gun stealing laws that are starting to leak in the Communist, American Constitution hating Seattle Times already. The Legislature doesn't even meet until next year. The anti-Constitutional Seattle Times is the leaking vessel in this case, part of this state's Communist leadership structure, that now includes all of Olympia, plus the crooked State Supreme Court, and the Leftie news rag called the Times. The Times leaks are the exact same strategy they used when they first passed I1639 last year, stealing citizen 2A rights. The SC of course ignored written law, and "interpreted" the law to the gun grabbers favor. I have tried to continue typing more, but everything I write could be used against me. So I am done deleting and just post the essence of why CW 2 is closer than we think. Only the US Supreme Court can fix this totalitarian attack on citizen rights. Or clean up the voter rolls and get non-citizens off of them. But that is just wishful thinking, I'm afraid. I am not moving, asshole anti-Americans and your fellow illegals in the shadows. No purchases - well, unless you count components. Bought 1K 250g plated bullets to reload 45LC for my Model 1866 at some point. Have the dies [actually got 'em cheap, barely used, along the route to pick up the 1866 up in Orange County - timing is rarely that perfect]. Have everything else already, as primers and powder are common to other calibers. Just have to empty the LAZ Ammo rounds I have to complete my brass stash. Had a good brief indoor range session with the CZ-83. Is Mark Andrew Edwards here? Think he got one, want to know how he likes it. Had the range guy handle mine, he'd never held one, he agreed it is an incredibly comfortable and naturally pointing little piece. BTW, the indoor range is the same at which the Giants baseball player [Huff?] went shooting with his kids and then posted a photo and commentary on his twatters, garnering gun nut and gun-grabbing fascist attention. I use a LOT of old words like malarkey. And I mean I use lot of them. I practically speak nineteenth century American English in common practice. This is a feature of my raising.
I am 31 years younger than Biden. I would never, ever use them in a political campaign speech. Largely because this is a 21st century campaign, and two hundred year old words won't resonate with anyone. The idea of printing a word like "malarkey" on the side of a freaking bus would be immediately shot down by me, along with the flack who who presented the concept. Maybe literally shot down, depending on how much I'd been drinking. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at December 01, 2019 08:55 PM (b8Gt1) 301

Posted by: Weasel at December 01, 2019 08:52 PM (MVjcR) nurse, after reading one of those Seattle Times articles about their gun-grabbing plans, they addressed ammo and those that buy it. Both the article and many comments below showed how shocked someone who is not a law enforcement officer or a professional bodyguard could actually buy ONE THOUSAND BULLETS!!!!! in a single purchase. That just proves the buyer is a crackpot. And many said that is enough proof to smear Red Flag charges on them to steal their guns without Due Process. They are stunned that a regular person could be so irresponsible buying that many rounds. Shocked, yes they are. Shocked and dismayed about those terrible ammo-buying people. Myself, that is a short order, needed to fill a spot on the shelf. If one is serious, they should have 1k to 5k rounds for each caliber they own. And then over 5k of your primary training arm. Back in those days, a Negro couldn't just go to the pool. But times were changing, and equality was in the air. One morning, I wanted to bend the arc of history toward progress in Wilmington. I decided enough was enough, to take a stand. Well, actually, it was a dive. A dive for justice. The board was only three meters high, but it looked like a mile from where I was standing. Little did I know, I would not feel those cool, cleansing waters of redemption. Not on that day. The voice of the cruel white Aquatic Center overseer, Joe "Cracker Jack" Biden, snapped like a whip: "Hey Esther, off the board or I'll come up and drag you off!" I knew he meant business. Hanging my head in shame, I retreated to the pool parking lot. But nothing was enough for Cracker Jack. He pursued me outside, his wrathful fist wrapped in a chain of oppression. "I'm sorry I called you Esther..." he said menacingly, "it's an insult to white womanhood! Now get your ass outta here before I show you what happens to uppity negros in Delaware." Biden has been a farcical longshot from the outset. None of the Dems have much potential, and that's in an absolute sense. In the actual circumstances they face, they're all without almost any chance. The built-in advantages of the Dems, including the degradation of half or more of the electorate, aren't adequate to make up for the environment, and the skills/particular appeal of the incumbent.
But more than likely that just buys a few more years of holding actions, as there's little sign the political class, institutions, and enablers are rethinking their near-complete detachment from popular will - and the part of the electorate making all the degradation possible isn't changing. Have long wanted to do biathlon, but, well, don't live in snow country [though there's snow on the mountains not far away]. Really have to live in a place where x-c is doable several months of the year.
Once was skiing at a place near Winter Park, CO, pretty empty, but there was a guy out practicing for biathlon. Carrying the rifle, empty, no shooting, but he'd set up at the shooting areas, and do "penalty laps" as one does on some courses for misses. Talked to him a bit, very envious. There was a recreational circuit for biathlon that he competed in. Talked to some folks who want to create an "historic" biathlon - one where everything resembles action in the Winter War. Large caliber bolt action rifles, steel silhouette targets at realistic ranges, firing from cover, snowshoes as well as skis, etc. Awesome concept. I'm ok with no safety on my P365. I use to have Glocks so I'm use to the no safety thing. I belly carry ITW to work daily because it's required if you work for the State of Texas... okay, maybe not required but it is allowed by law. I don't trust the armed security in the state buildings.

I've discussed how important it is to be able to feed our firearms and I believe the anti-2As will also attack through ammo availablity. That means taking advantage of sales, bulk buying, and so forth. For me that means reloading components, specifically cast bulleys. They are MUCH cheaper, extremely versatile, and very effective. They are what I use in 90 percent of shooting with modern ammo. Yes, I can cast my own but the commercial stuff is very good and affordable.
Sorry if I sound like a broken record on this but after the reaction Leftcoast Dawg mentioned, I think it's called for. PS: This is why I scavange brass where possible. Also, don't forget percussion caps for muzzleloaders. They were hard to find during the last shortage. Same for primers. Posted by: JTB at December 01, 2019 09:40 PM (bmdz3) 403

I've been carrying my SIG P365 with no safety in a soft holster at 4:30 position with one in the chamber every day for almost a year now with no problems at all.
I just like the knowledge that if I pull the trigger, it goes "bang" with no further action required. That thought is also in the back of my mind at all times when I'm carrying it, for safety reasons. Either way you go, Emmie, it's a pretty amazing little pistol. Definitely my favorite, edging out my P320. Posted by: Warmongerel at December 02, 2019 08:15 AM (aEUrG) 409
I have not seen a 365 with safety, so this may be off base, but my general experience with little auto carry guns with safeties is that they are too darned small to activate reliably under stress. I say this as a match shooter from way back when the 1911 .45 was the only way to go. One of the first mods you would make to a 1911 would be an extended safety. Modern single action autopistols have that covered, but the striker fired guns with safeties I have seen leave a lot to be desired. My carry guns are striker fired without safeties. If yours has one, train train train, with the safety in play every time so it becomes second nature. That said, my favorite match guns are still single actions with safeties. I shoot using the safety as a thumbrest for the strong hand.
