Vanity Genetic Testing Is A Slippery Slope Straight To Totalitarian Hell
Here is my possibly unpopular take on this: Anyone who submits his DNA to a third-party for any reason other than by court order enforced by cops holding you down and drawing your blood or swabbing your cheek is a fool. I'm not talking about genetic testing for specific risks like breast cancer and Huntington's Disease; hopefully those data are protected from government search, and are in any event quite specific and may not be of much use to Deputy Dawg poking around looking for evidence.
Genealogical databases are a goldmine for police, but with few rules and little transparencyOrlando police detective Michael Fields was sure he had the break he needed right in front of him to close in on a serial rapist: a list of people whose DNA partially matched the man he hunted. Then the list disappeared. After a year of criticism from privacy advocates and genealogy experts, the owner of a popular DNA-sharing website had decided law enforcement had no right to consumer data unless those consumers agreed. “It was devastating to know that there’s information out there,” Fields said. “It wasn’t fair.” So he persuaded a judge to grant him access to the entire database, the genetic records of more than 1 million people who never agreed to a police search. It was the first court order in the nation for a blanket consumer DNA search, kept secret from those whose genetic code was involuntarily canvassed.That quotation is amazing: "It wasn't fair." Guess what Mr. jackbooted thug, it sure as shit is fair. And it is protected by the United States Constitution, something about which you know nothing and care about even less. Why that judge granted access is beyond me, and a pretty strong indicator of our descent into a socialist/fascist nightmare. Why not just kick down random doors until you find something of interest? It's pretty much the same thing. If you are absolutely fixated on having one of these commercial ventures compare your genes to their databases so you can prove that you are pure Cherokee and run for president, then figure out how to do it anonymously. Or just lie like Elizabeth Warren. Seriously, there are enough smart people around here who don't trust government and industry. Bat this around for a few hundred comments and construct a method to get your genes compared without it leading back to you so some idiot anti-freedom detective won't knock your door down, shoot your dog, and arrest you for the cold case murder in his precinct.

Father's family were Jews from the Suwalki region of border of Poland and Lithuania. Mother's family English and Scottish.
They also do genetic testing for certain diet plans. I'd rather stay plump if that's my only option.

A male cousin did the YDNA kit for me several years ago at Family Tree DNA. That one is now pretty much just in the academic research bit for tracing YDNA haplogroup movement/development over time.
I've done my own at 23 and me; turns out to have been a good idea since either my Jewish great grandfather or his wife were carriers of Tay-Sachs, and it turns out so am I. My son tested, he didn't inherit it. My daughter will test to see if she did; if it appears a note will go in my grandchildrens' medical file to test when they're older.
The ethnicity results more or less depend on their pool of references. Since most of my great grandparents were the immigrants I know where they came from and the results in my case appear roughly accurate.

Although I am quite the civil libertarian, and believe strongly that our individual rights should be protected, I'm going to argue for the contrarian view here.
I say that there is a societal interest in identifying likely suspects, limited to cases of rape and sexual assault in which DNA evidence could be crucial, which outweighs any individual interest in keeping such data private. All citizens have a right to privacy; but no one has the right to unreasonably conceal evidence of a felony assault, and especially not a murder. Also, this is something that benefits the accused as well as a victim - if DNA evidence is available, it is easy to rule out suspects on that basis.

To get conceal carry and for professional licensing I had to give up a full set of fingerprints each time. So I refuse to hand over anything else. But probably screwed already cuz of the prints.

I don't have good ideas on how to test your DNA anonymously.
But I do think it could be weaponized. Submitting DNA under someone else's name could be interesting.
Maybe collect a DNA swab off of a customer's beer glass, if you know that person to have illegitimate kids running around, and submit the sample under the name and address of an enemy.
Make sure to make it searchable for family members.

It's too late for me. I just found out I'm Bulgarian, not Hawaiian, and I'm now in the process of making some cultural adjustments in my life. I'll miss the poke' but I won't miss the poi. Are stuffed cabbage rolls an acquired taste? I haven't acquired it yet but I'm working on it. I really wish I hadn't sent that DNA sample in for testing but at least now I know the reason why I only get sunburned when I try to get a tan.

I think Gedmatch was the one, or one of two that LE used; Gedmatch has now introduced a privacy option that lets you opt out of LE use. Not sure if that really works.

The cops come calling on said relative, and trace down all his family members.

If you have been in the military anytime since the mid 80's, the federal government has your DNA. Don't think for a minute that DOD would hesitate for a second to share it with other agencies.

My Mom has worked on family genealogy for decades. Just going over birth and death certificates, speaking with older relatives and writing the info down, even finding out what ports the ancestors came into and researching online where the ship departed from in Europe. It can be done and it's time consuming. My mom enjoys it.

If you have been in the military anytime since the mid 80's, the federal government has your DNA. Don't think for a minute that DOD would hesitate for a second to share it with other agencies.
Of course the upside is, there will likely never be another unknown soldier.

Which is why I believe in supporting legislation which allows but limits its use, in order to control it. Trying to fight it completely is a lost cause, and arguing for that position politically is just going to leave us on the outside looking in.

I think someone in my family might be a *not going to say it here*, so I'm going to send my DNA to several of these 'services', just in case.
I don't think the police should have a free hand in digging through the databases themselves, but there should be a way for them to have them screened for anonymous matches, then get a court order to get the personal information for any close matches.
DNA is interesting stuff. Yes, it's the most closely personal identifying thing we have, but we shed it all around us, leaving it everywhere we go. That's why police can pick it up at the scenes of crimes.
It's better than fingerprints or dental examinations for identifying criminals and the remains of their victims. And it's made it harder for innocent people to be wrongfully convicted for crimes someone else did.

Yup....I have a friend who was a traveling musician back in the 1960's on the Left Coast. He got a knock on his door about 6 months ago from a long lost son he "never knew" he had from his rambling music days.
The long lost son tracked him with the DNA info.
He was married to the same lady then as now and she along with their kids and grandkids were not amused.
He denied everything.

For some reason, DNA testing as it is used now reminds me a lot of Phrenology, Numerology or studying birth dates. It is information, sure, but is it useful?

One of the big surprises of DNA testing (it really shouldn't have been a surprise) is that roughly 1 out of every 10 kids did not have the genetic father they were told that they had. Even more remarkable, this number seems consistent with genetic evidence from past generations as well.

I've been fingerprinted 4-5 times for non-crime reasons. I have to assume my info is out there without any controls on it. Couple that with electronic medical, property, credit history, tax records, passport, etc., etc. - and I have to believe there is nothing the feds don't know about me.

My husband did the Ancestry and was surprised at the result. We are both Filipinos and my husband is half Filipino, a little Chinese and half Spanish and French. On his test result, he is less than 40% Filipino. He found out he has more than half European ancestry adding Italian and a very small percentage of German, Scottish, Welsh, and English to the mix. It was fascinating.

Tom, the issue that I see here is the involuntary confiscation of a private data base of DNA by the government that gives the government permanent possession of all DNA information for the people who submitted their DNA to this private entity.
Had the request been narrowly tailored to certain specific DNA sequences related to the crime under investigation, tested by a third party that would keep the unrelated data out of the hands of the government, the argument for this limited violation of privacy would at least be tenable.
But not the unlimited and permanent release of your full DNA genome to the government.
This means that the government has access forever to everything in your DNA without protection against future abuse, for instance insurance or employment discrimination based on your genome, should the data be released to other parties since you have no control of this data.
Very dangerous as technology accelerates (as in China's surveillance/social credit system) should our government resume its journey towards totalitarian practices.

My one cousin did the DNA bullsheet to track down her bio-family. Her dad was adopted, so my DNA profile likely is not affected. However my other cousin's kid is all +gung-ho about genealogy and jumped feet first into the DNA testing pool.

The "genetic counselors" might, however steer you toward thinking about "reproductive choices". Should you not have kids because if they eat like pigs they might get a heart attack, or if they do drugs they're more likely to be schizoaffective? Bullshit.

Do they really believe they did little but stoke the fires of anger? Yes there are some people who were probably wrongly convicted of the particular crime, but terrorists? Stupid.

That's why I believe we should support legislation that would allow but limit the practice to those times when it is absolutely essential for a felony investigation. That's the only way I see for us to have some control over it. Having it done by the State Legislatures is better than letting it be carried out by Police bureaucracies and a few Courts.

This is almost certainly constitutional. This wasn't information coerced from an unwilling population. It's a business record held by a company to which people voluntarily signed over their information, 99.9999% of which will be irrelevant. This sort of database is used by law enforcement almost routinely; like a list of license plates and what vehicles they're registered to, cf'd with vehicle owners and addresses in public records, or telephone metadata.

If you poop in a public toilet, you left your DNA there. Stay in a hotel room? Yup. Eat in a restaurant? Yes. Have a picnic in a park? Toss a paper cup you used in the trash? Smoked a cigarette and left the butt on the street? Chewed gum and spat it out? Yes, indeed. Criminals have been caught by police grabbing up their DNA in these very scenarios at crime scenes and matching it in a Government database. But there are so many crimes where DNA is found at the scene, but there is no match in the Government database.
I'm not saying this to make normal people paranoid -- just those who might think they can get away with trying a life of crime. Anything that gives them pause is good. We don't have the death sentence anymore to discourage thrill seeking psychopaths, so we may as well hold the sword of DNA testing over their heads.
I'm glad that foreigners crossing the border are now routinely having their DNA collected -- that should give would-be terrorists and drug dealers who come here pause.
And me? I'm glad to give my DNA to any database that will allow COURT CONTROLLED police access to help identify criminals and clear the innocent. I consider it my civic duty. If you don't want your DNA in the commercial databases, no one is forcing you to send it -- but please don't try to restrict my ability to do so.

Went to cash a $50 check at the drive-thru of the bank upon which it was written. No, sorry, you'll have to come inside since you don't have an account here. Once inside, after presenting my driver's license for ID, I was told I had to imprint my fingerprint on the check using the handy dandy ink-pad. WTF?

Right or wrong, Third Party Doctrine has been established case law since at least the 60's. You are not secure in your persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures when you freely and voluntarily turn those items over to another (whether an individual or entity).

From what I've heard, cold cases are solved when it turns out that the unsub is a first/second cousin of a 23 and me consumer. They don't kick in everyone's door who fits the profile. They apply more filters until it points to one- i.e. first cousin of consumer, lives within 25 miles of crime at the time, went to same high school as Vic, etc.

Unfortunately, Uncle Sam has my DNA that in theory was only supposed to be used to identify my body should I be blown up beyond recognition. Recently I had to go to a new OB/GYN. Their privacy requirement (which I read prior to my visit) noted that my DNA material would/could be given to researchers, DHS, law enforcement, etc. If I did not sign I may not be treated by the DR. I didn't sign it. Drafted a letter and gave it to the office manager when I arrived for my visit. The office manager said that I was first patient not to sign. They still took me as a patient. Also the NIH is looking for 1-million people to pony up their DNA.

I did realize early on how all the dna data could be used by the government and other unsavory types. But I love history and anthropology. Genetic studies were interesting and appealing to me. So I've confirmed that I am 80% Iberian. Expected given four Spanish grandparents. But the .1% East Asian (possibly statistical noise) and the 2% Finn were puzzling. Then one lab came back with 20% eastern European and the other with 0 for eastern European. Really?

What is not realized is that Medicate allows a one-time DNA testing when indicated by a doctor. JQ, the digital picture was something new I encountered a month ago when I had an initial evaluation done on my hip. It was explained that it was voluntary and the girl at the desk could see by my reaction that I was not the least bit interested. Couldn't understand why they'd want it. Now, with the benefit of this thread, it's becoming clearer. If the technology facilitates activities, they will most certainly happen, whether for legitimate or nefarious motivations. Cannot imagine the special kind of hell that will result when dna reports a false-positive. Seems it will be nigh on to impossible to prove one's innocence. As you've so aptly put it, "Welcome to the jungle fishbowl."

DNA testing unexpectedly found yours truly a full-blooded member of proud Hekawi tribe. Just received casino license. Plan to open 9/20. First week headliners in the swank Boom Boom Room are Jerry Vale and Corbett Monica.

Years back there was a murder near a large military base, local cops wanted to snoop in the DoD DNA data base. DoD said "Sure, give us a name and the DNA evidence you have and we'll tell you if it's a match" Local cops replied "We don't have a name, we just want to see if there's a match in the DoD data base." DoD response "LOLGF". Allegedly service member DNA is removed when the service member separates and is NOT included in criminal databases.

Some, er, information for educational purposes:
- They've now reached the point where they can pull DNA off of ejected brass, as a result of someone loading magazines without gloves on. Obviously they have a fairly short window within which to recover the brass, and they have to do it without contaminating it, but it's possible. If they collect it properly they can pull a match years later.
- They're now pushing 30+ years on recovering matchable latent DNA off of things like rocks, tools, etc. This is on stuff processed as part of an initial scene and then stuffed into an evidence box.
CBD is right, voluntarily submitting DNA for recreational analysis is idiotic.
