Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

36 The stunning Afgan photo reminds me of a line from "The Shop Around the Corner," which we watched for the umpteenth time last night. Pirovitch tells Kralik that his unknown correspondent aspirational soulmate must be pretty, and Kralik replies, "Not too pretty. After all, what chance would a guy like me have?" So our Afghan stunner comes to me with a filter of tenderhearted reality.

86 Advanced Problem.

White is down a rook. The immediate try with Nf6+ appears to fail:

1. Nf6+ Bxf6
2. Qh7+ Kf8
3. Qh8+ Ke7 and escapes.

So, it's the Q sac which allows a double check with Nf6.

1. Qh7+ Kxh7 (Kf8 2. Qh8#)
2. Nf6++ Kh8 (Kxh6 3. Rh3+ Kg5 4. Nh7+ ... )

and I'm stuck because

3. Bxg7+ Kxg7

and white runs out of material.

I will keep trying.

What I have played through is not too bad. It is a mash up as far as gameplay.

Story: do not look for old school Bioware depth or characterization. It is ok, but nothing special.

Visuals: pretty damn nice and one of the strongest parts of the game.

Gameplay: some people want to call it Souls like but it is no where near as unforgiving. It is melee. Jedi powers are not bad.

197 Isn't all "propaganda" inherently dishonest?

I don't think that's definitional. I read long ago, the Declaration of Independence is one of the greatest pieces of propaganda in history. And it certainly seems honest to me!

It isn't an attempt to persuade (directly), a long logical debate, nor an attempt to prove every point, as much as it is, well, a declaration. Not expected to elucidate and footnote-substantiate every sentence. Just flat-out declaring. e.g.

We hold these truths to be self-evident...

And, you know, as far as successful honest propaganda goes, it's hard to beat that fellow they put on the Cross. Still talking about his message today!

My 2¢ worth, less UN climate harassment tax.

Interesting how the "pro choice" people only are up for the choice of death, never for the choice of life. It's all about not not having to live up to the consequences of our actions, and wanting to sweep them under the rug where no one knows or sees - but you can't escape your conscience, or God.

the brilliant young running back for Ohio State, JK Dobbins, was the

358 I meant to post on the pet thread, since that would have been the most appropriate thread for this but I lost track of time and missed the thread. I wrote to Rick's sister asking about the cat situation. I received this response from her:

Hi Tami,

So nice to hear from you again! I read many of the comments that were posted for Rick on the Ace of Spades blog, but I wasn't quite sure how to hop around the different threads, so I might have missed a few, but I was so touched to find out how much Rick meant to your members. I'm sure he would've been delighted by everyone's thoughts. I'm glad everyone enjoyed the memory I shared. It came to me with such clarity that night he was admitted to the hospital and I thought that must've been a sign that he wanted me to tell some people about that very special night in our childhood.

Alas, the cat is still an issue. If he was a young, healthy cat, he would've been in the plane home to Texas with us on Sunday. I never even saw him, because he's apparently so timid that he hides under furniture most of the time. I'm not sure how he would adjust to a plane flight to TX, and our other pets (including two large Great Pyrenees who enjoy chasing our other cats as a game). The dear neighbor who has been feeding him for a few weeks has not actually been able to locate him in the house either, but sees that he eats his food and used the litter box (most of the time). I called 11 rescue groups early last week. 5 have not returned my calls, but perhaps they will after this holiday week. I spoke with the veterinarian that Rick used for years, but she suggested that euthanasia would be her only option, because of the lack of rescues interested in him. Rick's neighbor said a local shelter would take him and try to place him, but if they were unable to, he would be euthanized. I'm so torn between giving him to the vet, who would euthanize him, but at least he would not suffer and I could spread his ashes with Rick's, vs. giving him a chance to find a loving home at a shelter, although perhaps he would be terrified there and we would never know his outcome. I continue to pray that perhaps one of the group's we have not heard from yet will come through for him.

Do you know roughly how many people from your group would attend a memorial for Rick? He was a quiet man who kept to himself and had a small circle of friends in the Philadelphia area. I am still trying to decide whether it should be a small private memorial service for him. But if several people would be interested in coming, I'm also thinking about a memorial service at this little space museum in the Warminster PA area. I'm going to reach out to them this week and see if they would permit it: http://nadcmuseum.org. They don't really have a great building yet for their museum, but I think Rick would have loved the atmosphere and the few museum pieces they do have.

Thank you so much again for reaching out, and I'm so glad Rick had you and your group to be his friends and confidants for so many years.

Blessings,
Linda

I haven't really been keeping a count of people who said they wanted to go to the memorial. I will try to do a better job of that.

If you want to go, you can contact me at moronettetami at gmail.

Sorry to post this on the chess thread OM!

359 Tom Servo @ 337- Grambling/Southern! Have you ever been on Bourbon Street the week of that game?

360 Jane, I finally solved the email problem and you are so sweet for sending the card.

I am shipping you something on Monday but it is NOT at gift, it is a taste test.

363 Well peeps survived Thanksgiving. It was better than I feared. Some things remain unresolved, some things resolved, and some never raised their head.

But I have leftover eggnog cheesecake and some bourbon and ginger ale. So net net gotta end up "thankful".

366 333 will now channel surf between The Battle of the Bayou (Louisiana-Lafayette/Louisiana-Monroe) and UNC/NCST. I love this time of year. Rivalry games are fun even if you have no rooting interest for the teams involved.

It will always be USL vs Northwestern LA .

I think that gives away I'm not 29.

I seem to recall that Louisiana-Lafayette was once called SW Louisiana St.

375 Didja see this? One of the heroes who saved a girl from the terrorist is a convicted murder who killed a disabled girl and is serving a life sentence at an "open prison" from which he got a day release.

https://bit.ly/34DAN4r

So a guy who should've been in prison stabbed and killed but was stopped from killing more by a guy who should've been in prison.

376 I agree with Ben Had. We had an elderly kitty that developed dementia and "forgot " what the litter box was. Tried kitty Prozac, and nothing worked. He was so sweet and loving, but he would wake up in the middle of the night, yowling, because he didn't know where he was. We ended up euthanizing him at 16 years of age. It still breaks my heart, but our vet said she would have done the same with her kitty.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at November 30, 2019 07:59 PM (ptqGC)

377 @Ben Had - I am no sommelier and tend toward $10-$15 wines for thee table so I may not be a good judge.

In our Giant Trump Meritage is $36 but at ABC store it is $29.

The Meritage is a decent red but aside from the label I probably wouldn't spend $30 for it. They also sell Chardonnay (which I really don't like on any label) and a Cabernet which is about $20 a bottle. Have not tried those.

I don't know if that answers the question but it is a good red. Pairs better with steak than turkey.

Posted by: blaster at November 30, 2019 08:04 PM (ZfRYq)

378 What would rickl have done with his cat? I think he would have done what Ben Had and Jane D'Oh have suggested. Me too.

Posted by: kallisto at November 30, 2019 08:05 PM (smQOA)

381 Rickl's kitty Kira died in his arms. He wouldn't want his other kitty frightened, sick, and in an unfamiliar surrounding. If Rick's sister or someone who knew his kitty was willing to be there with the kitty while it crossed the Rainbow Bridge, that would be the kindest thing to do. Just my opinion.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at November 30, 2019 08:09 PM (ptqGC)

382 Jane, Amen. I will email Tammy and ask that she pass this along.

I was going to do this eariler but I didn't want to add any more on Tami's plate on Thanksgiving.

Not sure of the religiosity of this, but I'm a believer in the rainbow bridge, so rickl will be waiting on the other side!

Posted by: JQ Moon Moon at November 30, 2019 09:15 PM (gP/Z3)

386 Oh, and--

Poor Leo. Rickl surely wouldn't have wanted his lil buddy to be all alone and scared, on top of being ill!

If there's no hope of adoption (and I am too far away as well, in the middle of Idaho, but I'd love to have another furry purry friend) then perhaps it's best to send Leo to The Rainbow Bridge to be with his pal, rickl.

It's all just so damned sad.

Posted by: JQ Moon Moon at November 30, 2019 09:21 PM (gP/Z3)

387 Sounds to me like Leo cannot be located to be taken to the vet or PTS at home by a visiting vet w/o tearing the house apart at this point. Euthanasia may be the kindest option IF a cat whisperer could hang out until Leo would come out. But it might be best for the very short term to just make arrangements with Rickl's vet to get any prescription food and litter as needed sent to the neighbor via chewy.com or foster an smith etc. that does deliveries including prescriptions.

388 Pale Rider, my brother's cat is this way. If bro goes on vacay where he can't take kitteh, I will stop by to feed her. She hates everyone except my bro, who rescued her from shelter. (No idea what her former life was like)

I top off the water bowl and food dish.

Never see cat, just notice dent in food pile and water level lowered.

*sigh*

Posted by: JQ at November 30, 2019 09:48 PM (gP/Z3)

390 JQ, we have a timid cat, but he gets lonely and will come out after a few days especially if the neighbors 5-6 yr old daughter comes over with him and come in to pet the cat while dad feeds the horses outside. But Leo sounds like a more severe case. Poor old cat.

Posted by: PaleRider is simply irredeemable at November 30, 2019 09:52 PM (n4y+3)

391 Yeah, Leo sounds like my bro's cat. Been several years and she should know all his friends by now...

Still won't come out. Not for kibbles or feesh.

Posted by: JQ at November 30, 2019 09:57 PM (gP/Z3)

392 I know cats can have physical/emotional problems if there is a sudden change in their life. They know when something isn't right and Rick was dealing with health problems the past 2 years at least.

I've had my daughter's cat for for close to two years. she hides whenever anyone but me comes into the room. She used to hide from me too but got use to me.

I'm not comfortable telling Rick's sister what to do with the cat. She's already looking at euthanizing him if she can't find someone to take him (and spreading his ashes with Rick's), so I'll leave that decision in her hands.
