Presidential Thanksgiving Proclamations [KT]

AFirst-Thanksgiving.jpg

Menus: First Thanksgiving vs. Thanksgiving in Lincoln's Time

Have you thought about starting a tradition of reading a Presidential Thanksgiving Proclamation on Thanksgiving? This is a really American holiday, and we don't have a lot of rituals that remind us that we are a nation. Dennis Prager usually reads one on the radio on Thanksgiving, about the time people on the West Coast are cooking. J.J. Sefton included one from George Washington at the end of his Morning Report this morning.

President Trump has delivered the 2019 Proclamation. It starts:

On Thanksgiving Day, we remember with reverence and gratitude the bountiful blessings afforded to us by our Creator, and we recommit to sharing in a spirit of thanksgiving and generosity with our friends, neighbors, and families.

Nearly four centuries ago, determined individuals with a hopeful vision of a more prosperous life and an abundance of opportunities made a pilgrimage to a distant land. These Pilgrims embarked on their journey across the Atlantic at great personal risk, facing unforeseen trials and tribulations, and unforetold hardships during their passage. After their arrival in the New World, a harsh and deadly winter took the lives of nearly half their population. Those who survived remained unwavering in their faith and foresight of a future rich with liberty and freedom, enduring every impediment as they established one of our Nation's first settlements. Through God's divine providence, a meaningful relationship was forged with the Wampanoag Tribe, and through their unwavering resolve and resilience, the Pilgrims enjoyed a bountiful harvest the following year. The celebration of this harvest lasted 3 days and saw Pilgrims and Wampanoag seated together at the table of friendship and unity. That first Thanksgiving provided an enduring symbol of gratitude that is uniquely sewn into the fabric of our American spirit.

More than 150 years later, it was in this same spirit of unity that President George Washington declared a National Day of Thanksgiving following the Revolutionary War and the ratification of our Constitution. Less than a century later, that hard-won unity came under duress as the United States was engaged in a civil war that threatened the very existence of our Republic. Following the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, in an effort to unite the country and acknowledge "the gracious gifts of the Most High God," President Abraham Lincoln asked the American people to come together and "set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens." Today, this tradition continues with millions of Americans gathering each year to give their thanks for the same blessings of liberty for which so many brave patriots have laid down their lives to defend during the Revolutionary War and in the years since.

Daniel Horowitz writes about one of the proclamations by Coolidge, who wrote some proclamations worth reading aloud.

In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge noted in his annual Thanksgiving message, "An abundant prosperity has overspread the land." He exhorted the nation to use the abundance to please the giver of that bounty and to lift our spiritual state to equal our physical one. "We shall do well to accept all these favors and bounties with a becoming humility, and dedicate them to the service of the righteous cause of the Giver of all good and perfect gifts," wrote the quiet and humble 30th president. "As the nation has prospered let all the people show that they are worthy to prosper by rededicating America to the service of God and man."

As we stand here today, nearly a century later, nobody would wish to live in that era, which Coolidge later referred to as one of "comfort" where "wealth is almost incalculable." Most people didn't even have the full bathroom amenities of hot piped water, a bathtub, shower, or a flush toilet in their homes, yet they were happy with their state of being. Why? Because as Coolidge observed in his 1928 Thanksgiving proclamation, the spiritual wealth of the nation grew commensurate with its physical wealth:

Our fields have been abundantly productive; our industries have flourished; our commerce has increased; wages have been lucrative, and comfort and contentment have followed the undisturbed pursuit of honest toil. As we have prospered in material things, so have we also grown and expanded in things spiritual. Through divine inspiration we have enlarged our charities and our missions; we have been imbued with high ideals which have operated for the benefit of the world and the promotion of the brotherhood of man through peace and good will.

I don't think he was talking about charities controlled by the federal government there.

As the wise President Coolidge once said, "If at any time our rewards have seemed meager, we should find our justification for Thanksgiving by carefully comparing what we have with what we deserve."

My own theory is that societal rewards seem to work differently from personal rewards, which sometimes seem to go to undeserving people.

Hope you experience some blessings this Thanksgiving. Here's an old Shaker song.

And in case your are curious about Thanksgiving foods at the time of Lincoln, a little history from the link under the art at the top of the post, from culinarian Kathleen Wall:

Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of the popular women's magazine Godey's Lady's Book, , a real trendsetter for running a household, was a leading voice in establishing Thanksgiving as an annual event. Beginning in 1827, Hale petitioned 13 presidents, the last of whom was Abraham Lincoln. She pitched her idea to President Lincoln as a way to unite the country in the midst of the Civil War, and, in 1863, he made Thanksgiving a national holiday.

Throughout her campaign, Hale printed Thanksgiving recipes and menus in Godey's Lady's Book. She also published close to a dozen cookbooks. "She is really planting this idea in the heads of lots of women that this is something they should want to do," says Wall. "So when there finally is a national day of Thanksgiving, there is a whole body of women who are ready for it, who know what to do because she told them. A lot of the food that we think of--roast turkey with sage dressing, creamed onions, mashed turnips, even some of the mashed potato dishes, which were kind of exotic then.

I have never had creamed onions for Thanksgiving. Have you?

Just about time to start-

THANKSGIVING: The Cookening!

This year the main event will be a double-header-

Prime Rib with Yorkshire Pudding

and a first time try (There is no try only do! Yes, Chef Yoda.) at yummy yummy-

Porchetta!

And I'm tempted to accompany the Porchetta with a naturalfake original-

Porkshire Pudding!

Since Prochetta is a roast meat throwing off a lot of delightful drippings...just like Prime Rib.

Should work.

Maybe use herbs in the Porkshire Pudding.

Hmmmm.

Here's another Thanksgiving fun fact. The pilgrims did not set foot on Plymouth rock when they landed in Plymouth. They landed on Clark's Island in Plymouth Bay, named for the first mate of the Mayflower.

They were going to set up their settlement on Clark's but then decided a small island probably wasn't the best way to go and moved over to what would become the town of Plymouth.

The book "1491" had a theory which I am inclined to believe. You basically have two waves of Europeans visiting the New World. The first wave is the explorers generation starting around 1500, the second is the settlers starting around 1600.

The first wave noticed sparkling cities and abundant populations and also dropped a ton of diseases on them without knowing it. Then almost everyone died. The second wave came by and said the first wave must have been on drugs because where are all the cities and the people?

So the abundance of animals and fish was unnatural. There had been human predators but they were mort and for a brief period the animals' food chain was out of balance.

During the War of Rebellion against the crown, I believe that prison ships in New England served prisoners lobster on a regular basis, instead of real and nourishing food.

Prisoners complained a lot about that.

81 Clarification and Concept Development:

Here in the barnyard, 'turkey sandwich' is a complex term. in the immediate aftermath, the open-face version contains ALL the essential dinner components: bread, turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, parsnips, etc. And then, the following week, for work, we have the more portable variety: hand-held stripped down version, with the wheat/white choice, Miracle/Mayo, cheese or not.....

I hope this helps.

85 During the War of Rebellion against the crown, I believe that prison ships in New England served prisoners lobster on a regular basis, instead of real and nourishing food.

Prisoners complained a lot about that.

In the early Pilgrim years one Pilgrim woman whined at her diary that they were so poor they had nothing to feed their guests but lobster.

86 Regarding the "Millennials hate Thanksgiving" piece on the last thread, I'd like to point out, as someone born in the early 80s, that a survey of college students, some of whom are almost young enough to be my children had I married at the same age my parents did, is not necessarily representative of Millennials as a whole.

I like Thanksgiving quite a bit, and I'm pretty sure that most people my age feels the same, insofar as I've never heard any complaints in person from anyone my anyone my age over the years.

87 I read once in the 90s that Texas had ten times the White Tailed
Deer as the entire nation had in 1920. Deer for example are a border
species. They thrive on a small woods with farmland or other types of
civilization nearby. When the nation was mostly forest, there were far
fewer deer. Maybe there was an abundance of other wildlife but my guess
is it is overstated.

The reason there is
so much wild game in this nation is hunters, and hunting licenses. The
other reason is the suburbs. Every try going squirrel hunting in the
woods? Now think of doing it int he 'burbs. In my experience, the
latter locale is more full of squirrels.

I think there's a case to be made that many species of game are more abundant now than they were then, simply because agriculture increases the carrying capacity of the land for a lot of critters besides people.

The exception is the sea. There the more pristine the better, and whenever there has been a halt imposed on fishing, the marine population has soared.

Right after World War II, the fish stocks were enormous because U-boat activity forced a six-year pause in the trawling fleets.

When I was at the Deepwater Horizon Oil spill (my novel of which makes a great Christmas present, hint hint), I talked with a wildlife biologist about this.

At the time the media was insisting that the Gulf was going to be devoid of life for centuries, but this guy didn't buy any of it. The Gulf had seen hundreds of oil tankers sunk during WW II and tar balls washed ashore for years afterwards, without hurting the fish stocks.

He said he expected a moratorium to be in place for a while, and then surprisingly good catches afterwards.

He also said no one in the science community would ever say this out loud.

102 So the abundance of animals and fish was unnatural. There had been human predators but they were mort and for a brief period the animals' food chain was out of balance.

Another things is that among the Mississippian cultures that the initial explorers found, there was very little hunting being done. Archeology reveals a lot of protein-deficiency related diseases and an over-reliance on corn as a food sources (pellagra).

I hint as to why that might be, despite the availability of game nearby is the fact that they were all living being big communities defended by walls, and some grave sites shows 1/3 of the male remains and 1/4 of the female remains had traumatic injuries consistent with weapon strikes. Going hunting unless in large groups might have been a bit risky....

104 British prison ships ("the hulks") were a death sentence in everything but name, & both sides knew it, too.

The treatment of U.S. prisoners of war by the British forces fueled the rage that led to the almost-equally-cruel treatment of" the Convention Army", i.e., the thousands of pitiful British prisoners who surrendered at Saratoga.

This tit-for-tat was not a happy chapter in either country's history.

"I have never had creamed onions for Thanksgiving. Have you?"

They were a staple on our Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner tables when I was a kid. Loved them, especially plopped on top of whipped potatoes. About 60 years later they don't sit as well.

I have gone to simple roasted onions as a side dish. (Do not cut or wrap in foil or do anything to the onion. Just put it on a baking sheet at 375 for an hour. When done, cut of one end off and squeeze out the onion like roasted garlic cloves. This method brings out all the natural sweetness in the onion. Butter, salt and pepper to taste. Delish!)

Why? There have been partial moratoriums and limits in place for various types of marine animals here in the northeast for years and they have been extremely successful in restoring the stocks.

One easy way to tell is the surge in sharks around here for the last few years. Besides if we had a full moratorium you would put a ton of people out of work.

One of the things I really like about the 1990s Last of the Mohicans is the way it portrays the Indians. "Yeah, we'll ransom the officer, but burn the girl alive so we can all enjoy her suffering."

A direct ancestor of mine was captured in 1782 after leading an expedition against the Shawnee in Ohio. He was leading the rear guard and got cut off. He decided to surrender because the Indians in question were "civilized" and would ransom him back.

Instead, they traded him to an "uncivilized" tribe which burned him alive. And no, it wasn't as straightforward as what they did to witches. It was far more prolonged. I won't go into it, but the whole "make you beg for death" thing totally applied.

So yeah, it was dirty fighting back then.

Fun fact: The surviving tribes still hate each other's guts. They know how it was, and what they did to each other.

Most big commercial bakeries have a store attached to the bakery where they sell the overstocked product. The delivery trucks return with the unsold products and they are sold for 1/3-1/2 of full price. So you might not get what you want, because it wasn't overstocked.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at November 28, 2019 09:24 AM (cfSRQ)

The argument is pretty easy to make. Consider whitetail deer. The easiest way to see this is to see this is in the hunting regs over the years. when I was a lad, you could take one deer per year in MI, OH, PA, WV, and it bad to be a buck (and not a button buck). Now, in OH, anyway, you can take one antlered and multiple antlerless (limits are by county, statewide limit is 6 deer total. have to hunt multiple counties to get 6).

Also, seeing a deer hit on a road or interstate was very rare. Now, it is rather commonplace in some areas and there are deer crossing signs in residential areas in numerous communities (there's one posted 150 ft from my house and I live a literal stone's throw from the Akron city limits).

255 So- Your Man Publius Redux reporting in at the end of the day here in Hong Kong. A fine Thanksgiving meal was had, out, at the American Club (in Town) in Central. A fine American sauvignon blanc accompanied a lovely several course meal ( Shrimp Cocktail followed by squash soup, turkey and all the trimmings and then pumpkin custard pie). A before dinner drink in the bar (Woodford's Reserve on a large rock) was memorable.
It was excellent and the club is wonderful. My Hong Kong friends had never had a real American Thanksgiving before. They were enthralled and enraptured.

The talk of the table, and the town, really? President Donald J Trump and how much everyone was in awe of his signing the pro democracy bills sent to him by Congress. The Hong Kongers know this is a thumb in the eye of China, that China expressly threatened the President and the US if he did so and know that it makes the trade agreement more difficult - and - and Trump signed it anyway saying "we stand with the people of Hong Kong." Hong Kongers know that this took balls. So much so that after dinner, when we went out onto the terrace and looked down into Central we could see a large gathering of pro-democracy protesters who had gathered to celebrate, complete with a stage and American flags. Soon, wafting up from down below came the first strains of The Star Spangled Banner which then rang out loud and clear. We, and especially your man, were overcome. There had to be about 2-3,000 of them. It was hard to tell as it was very dusty and there was something in my eye.

Truly an amazing day.

Happy Thanksgiving Horde! God bless us all, all Americans and all lovers of freedom and liberty, everywhere.

They are like now that a bit to the south of me (45 min or so). Grandparents of son's ex had (been a few years since I was at their place) a dozen plus that hung out. Turkey crap on the patio, driveway, and walkways. Can't touch them as they are managed wildlife.

At least there's no closed season nor bag limit on coyotes. Nowadays you can just about make a living fur trapping. Son did that a few years in the winter when between construction seasons.

I read that during the Revolutionary War, British prisoners of war were kept on prison hulks in Boston Harbor. Being served lobster constantly had them close to rioting.

" 14. Lobsters were once considered poor man's food. In Colonial times the crustaceans were so plentiful in the northeast that they were often used as fertilizer, feed for farm animals, and as fishing bait. Because they were so cheap, they were only eaten by poor people and served to prisoners and servants."

Follow these instructions: https://youtu.be/R-oONZgDT0M

Season to taste and sous vide to 155F for at least a couple of hours. Longer is better. But the beauty is that you don't have to babysit it. Watch a parade, go outside, go back to bed, whatever.

Remove from sous vide bag, pat dry, and stick under a screaming hot broiler.

Remove from broiler just before the smoke alarms go off.
