Happy Thanksgiving

It's been an interesting year. Some ups, some downs. A few victories just as many losses. But, I am able to sit up take nourishment, drink coffee and hang with you Morons.

Giving thanks does matter.

Such a sense of appreciation is increasingly rare. Most Americans, according to a Templeton Foundation survey, feel they receive little gratitude at home or the office. The feeling of gratitude appears to drop with age. Today’s millennials are the least grateful. This is not surprising given the new generations’ low levels of interest in the very things we are likely to feel grateful for, such as family, religion or America itself.

Older people, who often have overcome hard times, are more grateful. They witnessed the triumph of liberal democracy over communism. Many of them, like me, were raised by parents who came from poverty, and instilled the notion that, for all our problems, living here, at this time, in this country, is a manifest blessing not to demeaned or ignored.

Our country is not perfect. Our jobs aren't perfect. I don't know about your health, but mine isn't perfect. I'm very proud of each of my three daughters. I've been blessed with a fantastic spousal unit.

But we are free to express our thoughts, right, wrong or otherwise. Next November we are afforded the opportunity to vote in local, state and national elections. We are free to worship the God of our choice.

Yes our lives and the United States of America aren't perfect. But considering the alternative, Happy Thanksgiving.

41 I'm grateful for what I have been able to achieve.

Achievements, I might add, that probably wouldn't have happened anywhere but the USA.

I am also grateful for the bountiful feast we sat down to and marvel at the fact that a good part of what we put on the table was not available when I was a youngster. And by not available, I don't mean out of reach of what my parents could afford, rather, it simply couldn't be had.

And I'm more than grateful I'm allowed to worship GOD, and my Savior, without worrying if some group is going to break down my door and drag me off to jail for that worship.

I have three kids, who, despite their parents divorcing, seem to have their act together, for the most part.

For my kids turning out well, despite their parents, I count as a blessing beyond anything I could have hoped for.

I appreciate living in a place like Texas where I can own firearms, use one to harvest a nice buck, afford to hunt and have a well-equipped kitchen, and Mrs. E to do most of the brainwork. Now she needs to get the elusive 10 point that has been ghosting around our stands and I need to get a few hogs. We have a new freezer to fill. I thank GOD to have seen America at it's best, and to have met y'all.

I try not to complain TOO much. I feel guilty about complaining. But the last 8 years have been jam packed. In rough chronological order:

2011: Mom and mother-in-law die. Wife laid off.

2012: Youngest stepson violates probation (weed) and does a month in the county minimum.

2013: Sell house, live in an RV for awhile, buy new house. Wife becomes a truck driver (really), oldest stepson leaves house because he's too bipolar to deal with.

2014: A relatively quiet year, save for the fact that I now have a 2-hour commute.

2015: Dad commits suicide.

2016: Gall bladder is found to be necrotic and is removed.

2017: Struggling along.

2018: Wife leaves me. Youngest sister dies.

2019: Oldest sister and stepson move in with me because they need someplace to live. Wife is living separately. Car catches on fire and is destroyed, I suffer smoke inhalation. Employer undergoes complete reorg.

But through it all, the Horde kept my spirits up. One of these days, as God is my witness, I'm gonna meet you guys and thank some of you in person.

261 I will keep saying this until I can no longer summon the effort.

We live in the most exceptional county on the planet, governed by a political system unique in history, populated by an extraordinary people.

We are here by virtue of fealty to that political system, it has allowed us to reach these heights in spite of situations in our history that have destroyed lesser nations.
We will prevail through this current struggle, just as we have prevailed in prior times.

So give thanks that you live here.

Gianni Russo who played Carlo Rizzi recently released a book called Hollywood Godfather about his life. He tells a lot of stories about making the movie. He and James Caan hated he each other and the scene where Caan beats him up on the street he said Caan took a couple of real shots at him. Russo also says that he's killed 3 people in real life. All in self defense he says.

I've long thought that much of Calvin's ideas regarding predestination were largely a misunderstanding regarding the nature of time. And he stole most of his ideas from Augustine anyhow. John Wesley (who coined the phrase "we'll have to agree to disagree") thought Calvinism was the worst heresy of all time. But then, he didn't live to see some of the heresies that came into existence after the 18th century.

A Russian Orthodox monastery in Alaska doesn't sound too bad, as long as you don't run into any Grigori Rasputin types. My personal plan is to retreat to the wild hinterlands of Wyoming. I just have to avoid Teton county there.

As to the meeting, doing it now as Mrs IMG has to have her ankle repaired and surgery is next Tue (previously repaired in July, but some tendon anchors gave way, so re-repair needed). So I have an alibi for putting up the Christmas tree 2 weeks(!) before Thanksgiving, too.

How could I not be happy, eating such a nice hearty meal in the warm and dry home that I own, and having the frickin' internet to entertain me as I eat?
