Truly Thankful After All These Years

Tonight's Today's Feel Good Story of The Day.

During World War II, Melpomeni Dina was an orphaned teenager living with her two sisters in a one-room apartment in Greece. Recently she met the ancestors of the family she helped save from the Holocaust.

The Mordecai family was a Jewish family who owned their own businesses in Greece when the war began. Miriam Mari taught sewing classes at the fashion store she owned.

One of the students was Efthimia Gianopoulou, Dina’s older sister. Mari gave Efthimia the lessons for free because she knew that the orphans did not have much money.

When Greece surrendered, life was changed forever for Greek Jews. The Mordecai family hid in a false ceiling in an abandoned Turkish mosque for around a year.

Poor ventilation and lack of space led to health issues for the Mordeci family so they needed to find a new place to hide from the Nazis.

107 All right.

RUNNER: A Manhattan Story.

Once upon a time runner hated Manhattan. The drink. Any time runner tried Manhattan, runner hated it. Made by mixologists, made by close and personal friends, family, - all bad. Then , one day runner went to RL and tried their Manhattan. AND IT WAS GREAT. And runner learned its secret - Templeton rye. , antico formula vermouth and quality Italian sour cherry.

239 Just enjoyed one of the finest Thanksgiving dinners ever, here at Casa New Dawn.

13 lb. bird, roasting bag, seasonings, cooked to absolute perfection.

All the trimmings, including Irish Twice Roasted Potatoes, done properly, in duck fat.

Now then, it shall be time for a fine cigar and the breaking of the seal on a bottle of premium spirits. Soon as I decide on which one.

Gonna sit out on the porch in the rocker, taking in the last 90 min or so of the waning light of day.

I'll think of Rickl, and I'll cry for Average Guy, and will pray His Peace Which Passes Understanding, on them and on us all.

What I'm *not* going to do though, is try to understand. God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are the entirety of Creation, and not our wee speck of a presence within the scope of that Majesty.

But I'll be thankful that I, that we, knew Rickl here, even if but for a season. And grateful too, that we, being who we are, stand as fit to serve our brother Average Guy, in his hour of need.

Much to be thankful for, even in the pain.

The .mil says: "embrace the suck".

And so, with joyous hearts and anguished tears.. we shall.

Time for me to go and sit a while, now.

Mine is a Husqvarna, bought new maybe ten years ago, now. Briggs and Stratton engine with a carburetor. Starts every time, but it has 120 volt electric start. Put an extension cord on the built-in male plug, hit the red button, and it cranks up in any weather. And no battery to go dead in the cold! Also has heated hand grips, but I was wearing surplus Aviators' mitts today, so I turned the grips off. Hands stayed nice and warm, in 13 degree temps.

274 RE: the Jewish family in Greece (main post)

There was a lengthy window of opportunity to get out. Many thought they were safe in any country except Germany. The idea that the German army might follow them around Europe seemed almost fantastical. Lots of German Jews relocated to "safe" European countries, i.e., France, Holland, Belgium, Italy.

A lot of people, & not just the Jewish population of pre-War Europe, don't leave just because it's HOME. It takes a leap into the unknown to give up everything you own & flee.

I often wonder what I would've done.

Naturally, since this is Massachusetts, the advice was all stupid shit along the lines of "Do not make eye contact with the turkey. Back away slowly."

1) Shoot.
2) Eat.
Hell, you probably wouldn't even have to shoot. Just get one of those noose-on-a-pole things they use to catch snakes, snag it, then chop its head off.

I once read a first-person diary of a settler woman in Ohio River valley, circa 1825. She recorded matter-of-factly that her family had beaten some wild turkeys to death with an axe handle & fed them to their dogs.

I often wonder what I would've done.
