From the last thread
It's interesting that the Army's Delta Force was used to eliminate al-Baghdadi. For the last 10+ years, it's been the SEALs doing every special op that has been revealed to the public. I'll bet the Army-Navy Pentagon and White House wrangling over this subject has been more vicious than any battle in the past 1500 years. Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. At least this is going to be a short week.
Don't know who dis, though she looks a bit like Donna Dixon. Everyone knows the Hoff, though. It was a nasty, cold, rainy day yesterday, so I finished a new book, The Ship of Dreams: The Sinking of the Titanic and the End of the Edwardian Era by Gareth Russell. It is, of course, a retelling of the great ship's sinking, but rather than a huge cast of characters, the author has us follow four - Thomas Andrews, the designer; Jack Thayer, a young, clean-cut teen who was traveling with his wealthy father and mother; the Countess of Rothes, a wealthy aristocrat who was one of the heroines of the disaster; and Dorothy Gibson, a popular film star who, only days after being rescued, climbed back into the clothes she wore the night of April 14 to film the (now lost) Saved from the Titanic, the first film about the wreck. Pleasant reading, if the subject interests you, with some nice digressions on why no bodies were found on the wreck and why it would have been impossible (as a conspiracy theory claims) for Titanic and her sister Olympic to have been switched as part of a gigantic insurance fraud. https://tinyurl.com/rc5uvgt Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at November 25, 2019 11:34 AM (Ki5SV) 55

Here's something that will inspire a rant or two: Kate Blanchett is currently filming a tv mini-series on Phyllis Schlafly. A hit-job on her, not a flattering depiction of her contributions to America. This is what the Left does: they make sure that whatever narratives they've set stick, decades later by making sure that the younger generations have been indoctrinated with whatever smears they used on their enemies back then. See also HBO making sure AIDS is blamed on Reagan and the current move and Showtime series making sure that the only Media sexual harassment people will know about/remember will be Fox News' Roger Ailes. Posted by: docj at November 25, 2019 11:31 AM (77WPm) The old left-right dichotomy had broken down. Social conservatism has largely failed to conserve anything, and the left doesn't stand for anything but power. A proper Thanksgiving dinner, where impeachment is discussed, should also include placing all pistols, daggers, stilettos, and brass knucks by the salad fork. Close, OM. Never say "disagree" when rejecting a false premise that is factually wrong - point out the premise is incorrect, and provide the actual facts. "Disagree" falsely implies there may be point of view involved.
And I've been pointing out this exact problem, and the obvious solution [as we both noted], for years, and have told the tale of an excruciating experience where precisely this approach was suggested to a high-level personage about to do an interview with a major Euro media outlet on one of the big world stories of the day. He agreed, even seemed to understand how this was the only sensible way to proceed - then utterly failed to implement the approach in the interview, just minutes later. The great conflict of this century will be the individual versus the collective, whether we are to reform and continue as a representative government, or sustain our decline into the rule of an unelected bureaucracy that is above the law.

Impeachment's not actually happening. Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Just All about the Billy Wilder movies at November 25, 2019 11:34 AM (q80AH) I still don't see how Pelosi unrolls impeachment. However, she is some type of weasel, and I would not be surprised to have her just use baldfaced lies to justify whatever she is going to do. Pelosi and Schiff and all those Dems (including Hillary) have stated categorically that the President has committed impeachable offenses, and have been trying to shame Republicans into going along with the impeachment by saying that they are reusing to hold him accountable. If they don't impeach, then they are complicit. I know, hypocrisy isn't going to stop them. But their base is going to hold them to that. I think the only refuge will be for Nancy to claim that the President and the administration and Republicans in the House and Senate are so corrupt that they are going to be able get away with obstructing justice (did you know that the Attorney General was handpicked by Trump? HAND. PICKED!) And then use that to say well this is why in 2020 you need to vote for Dems in the House and Senate and Presidency. Posted by: blaster at November 25, 2019 11:43 AM (9VeU0) 119

Posted by: sniffybigtoe at November 25, 2019 11:37 AM (1ISKN) Yeah, and I don't expect the Judiciary Committee to hold any hearings with witnesses. Only to vote on sending the Schiff-approved Articles to the full House. I believe that's today's plan, but Pelosi and Company may have to change it after Schiff's schiff-show, As I see it, from the testimony I've heard and read to-date, they have a very weak circumstantial case for Trump "bribing" Zelenski with release of foreign aid in return for "digging up dirt on the Bidens." They think they have a solid case for Obstruction of Congress. According to strict reading of applicable laws, perhaps so. However, I cannot see the Senate (nor SCOTUS if it gets there) going along with an Obstruction of Congress charge for the Executive Branch's denial of requests to hand-over documents and to allow Cabinet Officers and Presidential advisors to testify. If they do so, it's the end of Executive Privilege. Because it will set a precedent of Congress getting any documents or any official's testimony from the Executive Branch, merely by opening an impeachment "inquiry." OT from the art thread:
The Battle of Camden is a big deal in SC. Sadly, Cornwallis defeated the patriots. A lot of Carolinians (N. and S.) died there, almost all militia. ----- "According to Charles Stedman, one of Cornwallis' officers, "The road for some miles was strewn with the wounded and killed who had been overtaken by the legion in their pursuit. The numbers of dead horses, broken wagons, and baggage scattered on the road formed a perfect scene of horror and confusion: Arms, knapsacks, and accoutrements found were innumerable; such was the terror and dismay of the Americans." Posted by: TheJamesMadison, Just All about the Billy Wilder movies at November 25, 2019 11:48 AM (q80AH) When you understand that Brexit in the UK, and anger at illegal immigration, in the US, are both motivated by *class* differences more than any others, it becomes much easier to understand who supports either and who doesn't, on both issues. In the UK, if you are upper middle class or wealthy, call it Professional Class, then you are greatly Benefited by the EU. You get to own second homes on the Riviera easily, your labor costs stay low because labor supply comes from anywhere, the costs of the goods you buy are always low because you always buy tarriff and duty free from the lowest cost provider. You make a LOT of money from being part of the EU. Besides, Administrators and Solicitors and Middle Managers never have to worry about immigrants coming in and taking their jobs. BUT - if you are working class, then you are driven out of your job by immigrant competition, you can't even afford a first home, and all the industries that you could have worked in have gone elsewhere, and you live in crappy government housing on government assistance with crappy government healthcare, and there's not a ghost of a chance of you ever breaking out of it. Because the Professional and Ruling classes have got you locked in tight, with no way out. Brexit is a way to break the headlock, and to give the working class a way to lift themselves back out of poverty, and so what if the Professional Class won't like it? So. For Mrs. Flounder's birthday, I got her car a remote start installation, because of the cold winters that we have here. I finally had it installed last week.
This weekend, she tells me it didn't work. I ask if she followed the instructions on the little keychain instruction placard that they gave us that lists a prescribed sequence of button presses. She said yes. I went and tried it out successfully on my own. This morning, I took her out to show her how I had remote started it successfully and told her what to do. Started right up. She confessed that instead of pressing the lock button on the keyfob, which normally locks the doors, in the prescribed sequence, she actually pressed the little button icon on the instruction placard in the prescribed sequence. Posted by: Gref at November 25, 2019 11:24 AM *** Last time I looked, Afghanistan was a land-locked country. No ocean anywhere. The Seals have gone way beyond their charter. This seems apropos: John Gillespie Magee Oh! Hov'ring there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark or even eagle flew -- And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God. Canada breaking apart was a thing in the '70's. Quebec wanted independence and Ontario was okay with going along. That scenario had the Maritime provinces joining New England and everything from Manitoba west joining the US.
Now, I can see Manitoba, Sascachewan, (sp?) Alberta and eastern BC along with the Yukon signing up. I'd split the I-5 corridor from Salem Eugene OR up to Vancouver, BC plus Vancouver Is. into its own Ecotopia state. The rest of WA and OR would be thrilled at that prospect. "all mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language; and every chapter must be so translated; God employs several translators; some pieces are translated by age, some by sickness, some by war, some by justice; but God's hand is in every translation, and his hand shall bind up all our scattered leaves again for that library where every book shall lie open to one another."
