Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Wall Street Journal: Google Is Blacklisting Conservative News Sites, Despite Denials Made Under OathReported by the Daily Mail, which recapitulates the WSJ reporting. (The WSJ is behind that annoying paywall.) Google 'DOES blacklist sites, has targeted conservative news sites and changes its algorithms to favour big businesses,' claims new report - despite the tech giant's denials The Wall Street Journal claims Google has been blacklisting sites It also claims that conservative publications have been blacklisted The WSJ claims that Google made algorithmic changes in favour big businesses over smaller ones including on behalf of a major advertiser, eBay They claim the blacklist policy instructs engineers, known as 'maintainers', to focus on sites that actively aim to mislead A Google spokesperson said the company does 'not manually determine the order of any search result' ... The WSJ report also claims that Google made algorithmic changes to its search results that favour big businesses over smaller ones, and in at least one case made changes on behalf of eBay, which is a major advertiser. The company also boosts some major websites, such as Amazon and Facebook in search results, according to people familiar with the matter. Google's engineers have also created blacklists to weed out more-incendiary suggestions in auto-complete, the feature that predicts search terms as the user types a query - particularly those relating to controversial subjects such as abortion or immigration. The WSJ compared Duckduckgo and Google autocomplete results in Joe Biden, and found that 'creepy' was suggested every time by the former but never by Google. Here's an example of that: I just googled "John Solomon" to find his most recent reporting, and his own blog, JohnSolomonReports.com. Google answered my query with a page full of media hits on Solomon -- including from the ostensibly-authoritative trash website Daily Beast -- attacking his credibility. The link to his actual blog did not appear on the first page of results. Frustrated, I opened Bing and searched there. They do this deliberately. They claim "it's the algorithm," but the algorithm is made -- and repeatedly tweaked and biased -- by intentional human action.
68 In regards to the "build your own networks crowd"...Gab did that. I know some people don't like them because icky people use that site but they did it...and then: Their hosting service dropped them.Well, wrongthinker, they're not telling you to build your own website. They're telling you to build your own internet, as well as your own credit-card payment transfer companies so that people can subscribe and donate. All you need to do is make your own internet and your own banks. And then hope that Google doesn't just pay its "conservative" allies enough to get them to lobby to make the new internet and new banks illegal. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

Ah, a perfect Democrat-type lie.
"We do not manually interfere with search results." Probably true, when narrowly defined. "We manually interfere with the algorithm that produces search results" is a slightly different point. They still lied, but they lied in a Congress-friendly way. Kinda like "I didn't see The Dossier until the IC confab in December." He may well not have. "I saw all of the information in The Dossier, but not a compiled bundle of documents now referred to as 'The Dossier' at that time" is indeed slightly different. I looked up the basis for Jussie Smollet's claim in his suit against Chicago for Malicious Prosecution. Apparently it is all based on Jussie's claim that the two brothers who have confessed to the attack, and who were found with some of the items used in the "attack", actually had nothing to do with it, and that the City of Chicago talked them into making a fake confession just to make Jussie look bad.

... Posted by: can of spam at November 20, 2019 01:10 PM (g0aRc) ++++++++++++++ This was the greatest bald-faced "lie lie" that Google and Facebook told at the congressional hearings last year. They asserted that they can do what they want because their users accepted their terms of service. When asked directly if they compile information on people *who are not members* and use it, they all said no. That was a lie. Their cookies and social media buttons track you constantly. I am not a Facebook user, so they don't explicitly know who I am necessarily, but they sure know all about me thanks to all of the cookies and pingbacks. I never agreed to their terms of service, yet they still have a probably very complete dossier on me. When they got away with telling such an obvious lie, the fix was very clearly in. The state prefers the informal social credit system and treasure-trove databases that these fuckers are building far more than they prefer justice, honesty, liberty, etc. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 20, 2019 01:15 PM (I2dne) 62
I listen to some podcasts run by liberals that don't directly involve politics. One in particular is a philosophy podcast called Very Bad Wizards which I find entertaining.
One thing I found interesting is that on multiple occasions, they've talked about articles written by people in tech on topics like self-driving cars or whatever, where somebody has to write a program that would have to make an ethical decision. They've expressed exacerbation when the people in tech doing these things say things like "It's nonpartisan" or "we're not making an ethical judgement, we're just following the science" even when the actual results end up being the ones they agree with. It seems like lots of people in tech have such a poor philosophical foundation that they don't even realize that they are making philosophical and ethical assumptions that come out in the way they write their code. This has been on full display in the current impeachment farce. But it's worse that just lack of repercussions -- it's the expectation that your buddies working the back end of the system will "fix" things so that your lies become Truth substantiated by the authoritative factual record. This has been the entire play of the Russian-Ukraine plot -- establish a narrative circle jerk and have some guys write up the authoritative facts to justify it. The only reason it hasn't worked is that they're lazy and incompetent. Look, I agree with the philosophy that if you don't like the behavior of Google (or Facebook, or Twitter)...you should create your own platform to further competitive capitalism thus creating a more fluid market that forces the offending entities to change their ways or get pigeon holed into a smaller niche.
Here's the problem. Silicon Valley is conspiring together to assure that is an impossibility. When an upstart challenges one of their chosen group, the other entities circle the wagons and disallow that new company a foothold. For example, Paypal will refuse to do business with them as will every other "chosen" payment processing entity. It's textbook violation of the RICO Act. The only way to compete on a lucrative level would be for a massive investment in the process. You'd need your own server farms. You'd need your own payment processing. And, of course, you would require you own innovative software platform. And, if you think Silicon Valley won't orchestrate an aggressive Civil Suit barrage challenging every single aspect of your platform as a violation of their own patented software, you are fooling yourself. They have a stranglehold on all potential competition simply because they conspire to do so. And, no one tells them they are breaking the law in that regard...so they keep doing it and stifling the free market....purposefully. Posted by: Orson at November 20, 2019 01:18 PM (V+o6A) 81

In regards to the "build your own networks crowd"...Gab did that. I know some people don't like them because icky people use that site but they did it...and then:
Their hosting service dropped them. Their backup hosting service dropped them. Their domain registrar dropped them. Their payment processor dropped them. Every time they got a new system in place...boom, all of a sudden they got dropped by someone else. It's almost like there's a concerted effort to control what you are permitted to see. Posted by: Laughing in Texas at November 20, 2019 01:16 PM (xQfPr) ++++++++++++++++ Yes, this is a crucial point. You *can't* "build your own" because they will corner you and kick you out every time. Most of these companies are monopolies or near-monopolies in their own spaces. Heritage, huh. I rank them right up there with AEI as corporatist tools. From wiki:
The health insurance mandate in the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, is an idea hatched in 1989 by Stuart Butler at Heritage in a publication titled "Assuring Affordable Health Care for All Americans".[26] This was also the model for Mitt Romney's health care plan in Massachusetts.[27] Yeah, thanks a bunch, Heritage. When DeMint left the Senate in 2012 to head up the joint, I had some hopes for the place, but the insiders finally ran him off in 2017. He probably had too many icky conservative ideas. I pull development permits in the Houston area for several clients. As such my name and phone number show up as the contact for the developments. Oh, don't get e started on self-driving cars, LOL! Seems to me that the only way they can make these even close to safe is to put them on roads that are 100% self-driving. Easier to code when there is one set of standard behaviors for a car vs. trying to create responses to the myriad of possible unpredictable human behaviors, etc.. And if that happens, then people will likely stop owning cars (do you really own it if you don't control it? why bother?), and THEN it will be like Chinese social credit system or any current social media service already, where you can be suspended based on a murky, ever-changing, TOC. What I see in the long term is that American society is increasingly diverging from the Constitutional basis on which it was founded.
Freedom of speech once reflecte, and guaranteed free expression and freedom of conscience in a society that largely valued it. Today we have large swaths of those who are culturally non-American or anti-American (including native born indoctrinated youth) to the point that they just don't value what the constitution and law supposedly protects. So in the main our society increasingly operates, day to day, without the values of free speech (cancel culture, doxing yesterdays contested policy as today's heresy, heckler's vetos on campus etc etc). At their worst the anti-freedom crowd cynically games the law to advance unfreedom. The rest mostly just have a tin ear for the music of freedom vs the notes: believeing "the Constitution" will save them when they are not free in a meaningful sense in their own lives. Could have save time and effort by just watching people play Grand Theft Auto. Posted by: Buzzion at November 20, 2019 01:39 PM (SjIcT) I stopped playing GTA not because it made me a sociopath but because it exposed how much of one I was and I was not comfortable with that knowledge. Story time! When the late, lamented BFF was first diagnosed with cancer, I moved up to take care of her and we thought this was going to be months long thing, not three weeks. As a result, I brought along my Xbox and various games, including GTAIV (the then most current). One day, one of her cousins asked me if I cared if her son, who was 10, played my Xbox and I said no problem, what does he want to play. She said GTA. I stared at her and asked her if she knew what the game was and she said yes. I assumed her 10 year old had lied to her and I asked her if she knew that you played a gangster and the game involved things like shooting cops and running strings of hookers. She said oh it was fine he played it at home all the time. I said, that's nice, then he can play at home but not mine. No possible way. I still cannot believe anyone would let a 10 year old play GTA. "You realize why the upper Midwest even HAS Democrats? Because the farmers who needed access to railroads or grain elevators were told to build their own."
My hometown in Ohio was told that in the late 1800s. So they did -- raised the money to run rails to the next town and get an engine to run on it. It's long-abandoned, but the station house is still there, and you can make out about half the length of the track in satellite photos. Google is also biased this way in a non-political fashion as well -- they have a huge bias in favor of shopping sites that advertise with Google.
Just yesterday, I wanted to find the Web site of a small company that makes a specific electronic doodad I was looking for. Their URL is a no-brainer -- let's just say the company name is Aardvark Widgets, and the URL of their homepage is aarvarkwidgets.com. However, when I typed "Aardvark Widgets" in the Google search page, the first freaking FIFTY results were for shopping sites (like Amazon and eBay etc.) selling this or that widget made by the company. I think the company's own home page finally appeared on the third page of results. Ridiculous. Posted by: zombie at November 20, 2019 01:50 PM (fK2gX) 248

The google crap was obscenely obvious on youtube searches a couple of months back. Any search for a creator usually always meant you'd get a litany of video about said creator (usually hit pieces). What's so hard about putting the actual channel up? You can't tell me an algorithm decides that rather than show the channel you're searching for, most people want to see hit pieces?
Same went for actual videos - and still does to some degree. As a test, I entered the actual title for a particular video (rather long) and it didn't show up, at all. At least, I gave up after 50 or so. They've backed off a bit on YT just because it was so blatant and they were called on it by folks like Dice and Watters. But we had plenty of proof back in 2015 when you could type in "michelle obama is..." on both google and Duck Duck Go (or bing or almost any other search engine) and get wildly different results. Funny how all of this stuff started in earnest in 2015, pure coincidence, right? Posted by: clutch cargo at November 20, 2019 01:57 PM (Z1ykJ) 285

On the topic of self-driving cares: no.
Even if they can be made to work and work well, even if they can be made to work better, on average, than human drivers. The answer is still no. We can move in this country. I can get in my car and go anywhere I want. I am in control. I press the pedals and I turn the wheel. If I want to pull up stakes and leave my town, state, house, etc., I can do so. A self-driving car makes me cede that control to the state in some manner - whether it is through a state operator directly or through an agent like a big tech company. Self-driving cars destroy the freedom implied by owning your owns means of conveyance. The part of the self-driving car that you own and get to maintain is the chunk of hardware. The conveyance now belongs to someone else. No thank you. Not now. Not later. Not ever. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 20, 2019 01:57 PM (I2dne) 287

Okay, it's antique now, but what AV had that nothing since really has is a real query language. It wasn't SQL but you could do a lot. What no one understood was the level of manual effort that went on behind the scenes to build and rebuild the indices. This was an all-hands-on-deck 16-hours-a-day evolution for the ops staff, piles of shell scripts and etc. The effort involved meant the indices got stale, and what it needed more than anything else was automation of the index builds, and that never happened. The company put its money into trying to compete with Yahoo as a 'portal' (which is kinda how I came into the operation, Elon got $16M to go away but I made the wrong choice on my options...) but in the end...where are the portals now? AltaVista? That was a great site, I preferred it to Google for as long as it was possible to.
Posted by: Ian S. at November 20, 2019 01:44 PM (ZGrMX) Yeah, yahoo did great by absorbing/squashing that one, didn't they? Back in the day before google, web crawler was another one. I think if people could go back in time 10-20 years (or 25) they'd be amazed at how different the overall experience was. They've algorithmed the very life out of the internet. Back then it was all the dark web. Posted by: clutch cargo at November 20, 2019 02:03 PM (Z1ykJ) 316

Google "man can " gets you "Men can have periods", "get pregnant", very weird
Google "women can " gets "Women can do anything" and other positive things It gets worse. Google "Men can do anything" gets a bunch of links saying "Women can do anything men can do"\ Not manipulated much Posted by: FloridaMan at November 20, 2019 02:04 PM (xI2qg) 318
306 The effort involved meant the indices got stale, and what it needed more
than anything else was automation of the index builds, and that never happened. This seems unlikely to me. DEC stole the idea for search from Open Text, and the Open Text Index was fully automated. DEC were involved as system consultants. Posted by: Enquiring Minds Want to Know at November 20, 2019 02:05 PM (XzVUd) 319

>> The same goes for Google's foray into amassing and organizing health
data on millions of Americans. It's a nothingburger with mayo, unless you mistrust Google. Since mistrusting Google is a growth industry, the report is getting a lot of attention Google also just bought FitBit, in addition to getting access to one health insurer's medical records. Not only is it fair to be suspicious of ANY company -- or government entity --- that wants to amass the kind of data Google is collecting, but looking at their AI ideas, they want to use that data to *predict* individuals' behavior, and with that, they can seek to control it. It would be crazy not to be concerned about that. As Scott Adams says, the 2016 was probably the last free election. Now there is too much online manipulation to assume that a significant amount of voters were pursuaded into voting a certain way. Posted by: Lizzy at November 20, 2019 02:06 PM (bDqIh) 321
Alta Vista nostalgia. You could write real search engine filters, with parentheses and wildcards and stuff, IIRC.
Hmm. I think of Rubber Soul and Revolver as the Beatles' first double album. With just a few exceptions, still great songs. And those exceptions were never great. Run for your Life, Yellow Tangerine. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 20, 2019 02:03 PM (I2dne) obviously there is good and bad in all groups. Judging people by the decade they were born in is probably one of the worst ways to generalize But there is a pop culture representation put out there of each era. For example, if you ask about how people were in the 60's you would be told they were flower children at woodstock. Forget all the people that they opposed and who opposed them. Same with Millennials, there are tons of good ones. It is the culture that is put out that grates with many. Posted by: Quint at November 20, 2019 02:08 PM (n13/j) 324
I don't know, the commenters at THIS SITE last night were in love with Andrew Sullivan. With Jen Rubin declaringin 2017 at WAPO that the Gay Marriage debate had been Won!
Forget the CA votes, the will of the people...the debate had been declared won by the bought and paid for Conservatives!!! A mere two years later, people here agree. OK... anyone who's used the Google to search for political information knows that they actively, aggressively assist the Left in their efforts to eliminate opposition thought from the view of the global audience. But, what if you're just trying to find information about a product or service you'd like to purchase? If you're on the production side, you know damned well they fix the results in favor of large corporations. For me, this has meant an unfair advertising environment for years... it's been hard for us, but we've muscled through, until our business was recently purchased by a large corporation. Now, the Google system favors us, and will benefit us. It's still unfair. And it's still wrong. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at November 20, 2019 02:37 PM (GPeXd) 334
Just tried searching John Solomon on DuckDuckGo. It correctly has his top returns as:
1. Wikipedia 2. Hill page for Solomon articles 3. Twitter account 4. His website Order can be questioned but no bunk articles from random left wing sites. Best search but unfortunately "Google It" is in our collective lexicon. Posted by: Gman at November 20, 2019 02:41 PM (ZLCR7) 335
We have used Duckduckgo for all our searches for two years now. It seems to be quite reliable and unbiased. A bonus is that you only see ads for your current, to which they are relevant. Other search engines show you ads from previous searches and/or web sites visited sometimes days earlier.

Algorithms are stupid.
Google owns YouTube, and it demonstrates how stupid algorithms are. YouTube decided, based on comments of another poster in a video I saw, to start hitting me with clips of a movie I want NOTHING to do with. Each time it was offered, I clicked "not interested". YT was undeterred and kept offering it up, and even now, 18 months after this first happened, I will get offers to see clips. So You would think the algorithms would take my thumbs down into account, but no. (But algorithms are God, and are never ever wrong.)
