Focus-grouping this crap is maybe the only smart thing the Dems have done. It hasn't helped, but I actually understand that one. Impeachment is a political process. You need political capital - that is, you need the people on your side - to press it. I understand the focus groups. I just don't understand why they keep pressing forward.
And this was bipartisan. Some Dems voted against it, along with all of the Repubs. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 20, 2019 11:22 AM (I2dne) 25

If I am reading the statement about Sondland correctly, I am genuinely perplexed how these people get into and retain their positions.
The Big Guy never talked talked to his EU Ambassador about a quid-pro-quo. In fact, he explicitly *denied* and desire in that regard. But then, based on the rumor chamber that is DC and diplomatic corps, Sondland came to believe not what he was directly told by his boss but instead what he was told by others his boss purportedly said to him. That is weak-minded and weak-spined. No one like that should be an Ambassador to anything. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at November 20, 2019 11:25 AM (I2dne) 47

What I find amusing about Anna Karenina is that many women read it in college (including my wife who recommended it to me). Occasionally the subject comes up when discussing books (not something I often do but this one was a fav), I like to point out that Tolstoy was on record as saying he conceived of Anna as a fallen woman not, as was becoming the thing with the rise of communism, as a heroine. Some women who read it in college want to argue with me about it, but I'm always impressed by the women who did not know this and I get to see the lights come on. Many felt the exact same way as Tolstoy but were intimidated by their teachers to believe that they were wrong. Posted by: WTP at November 20, 2019 11:08 AM (66rlH) It takes a certain level of obtuseness, regularly found at the old folks home called kollidge, to consider Anna a heroine. Tolstoy was quite a cockster as a young man; doubtlessly he banged a few Anna types and, once he'd extricated himself, thought "maybe I should write a book about a grasping skeezer". I agree with #73 - the next election will determine if we remain republic. If the Democrats are badly punished at the polls, and I mean brutally punished, we will likely survive. If they win, especially the presidency, we're finished, because it will show that endless investigations, impeachment, and activity by the bureaucracy are tools of the permanent campaign.

I heard on Rush or Levin or somewhere that when Obama came in, he fired the entire diplomatic corp. All of them were gone and although they could reapply, he ended up putting the clowns we see today in place because they were of like mind. Then , the rules to fire these people were changed so the next president could not do the same. 166 Kids don't need drag queens to read to them. Stop this insanity. Posted by: Lizzy at November 20, 2019 11:40 AM (bDqIh) +++++++++++ This notion confuses me. Not even necessarily the drag queens part - that's just revolting and evil - but the group storytime thing. Is this really common? It is something I didn't experience and I am not that old. I had some group story times in kindergarten and group reading exercises in first grade. Beyond that, every story time was with mom or dad (usually dad) and rarely with my older brother reading to me. The idea of schlepping out of the house to a group story time somewhere else is totally outside of my experience. I didn't even know this kind of thing existed until the drag queens got involved. At least that system allowed the President to actually run the executive branch, not a bureaucratic aristocracy. My impression of Sondland is that he's being honest, telling it as he sees it, like it or not. His attitude appears to be: If you call me as a witness, I'm going to give my honest take, whether it helps or hurts you. He's not putting up a foreign service or military service shield against any questions about his impressions, integrity, or biases.

Drag queens are just an absolute bizarre idea that comes from where, I don't know. Lesbian librarians?
Posted by: Jen the original at November 20, 2019 11:52 AM (v2Axo) Years ago, I read a book called Literature Lost about the decline of literature and English teaching in high school and college. His theory was (in addition to just stupid, lazy teachers) that teachers just got bored teaching the same things, even if those things were effective. So they played with lit classes in cereal box writing or sight reading or whatever in an attempt to do something new and different. It wouldn't surprise me if that were the case with the drag queen story hours -- it's different, it's "edgy," it gives bored and stupid librarians something to chatter about. Bill Mauldin when he was out-processing to finally go home from Italy in WWII. "Downy-cheeked fugitive from a junior internship" giving him an interview asking about how he got a Purple Heart. LT asks if he had regained full use of his arm and hand. Mauldin goes "Huh?" LT, "It says here gunshot wound right shoulder." Mauldin, "Oh, no I never lost use of my arm or shoulder." Goes on about hospitalization and scar. Mauldin says no to either. Now the LT is shocked that he got a Purple Heart. So another voice in the line pipes up after losing his temper, a guy who has obviously been stitched together after getting shot in the gut. "Christ lieutenant, he didn't make the rules! We take what we are given and do what we're told!" Excerpted from the last pages of The Brass Ring* *Also in this last chapter Bill had gained a beautiful German Shepard from a surrendering SS officer. The pooch was named Anna. A female State Department officer promised Bill to ship the dog home for him. He never heard from her again. Posted by: Anna Puma at November 20, 2019 12:26 PM (Dp5C+) 406

He didn't, really. He asked for an investigation into Ukraine's involvement in the 2016 election. The Biden thing is/was something that was on the margins of that investigation. The fact that he pointed that out is meaningless. There was NO detail in the conversation. Merely a mention of the Biden / Biden's Son thing, in passing. The Purple Heart should be very special and the the requirements should be clear. I think overall that is still the case as I have seen many decorated Generals without a Purple Heart. I am not saying the shady stuff did not happen over the decades and wars, but I think they may be overstated at times for whatever reason.
It is true that military award requirements seem to differ by war, era, and even service. At Gettysburg, in three days, 64 people earned the Medal of Honor. No one doubts the sacrifices there, but we can go many wars without that many awarded. I am not saying bad purple hearts have not been issued, they likely were. But I am saying most deserved it and the medal should never be diminished in any way. Many had their physical lives changed forever for that piece of ribbon. The Purple Heart should be very special and the the
requirements should be clear. Former national security adviser Michael Anton suggested Wednesday the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump looks "like an inside job" lawmakers unhappy with the president manufactured. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff interrupted Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman's testimony during an impeachment hearing Tuesday and cited an effort to protect a whistleblower. "It looks like an inside job of a bunch of career bureaucrats getting together and saying, 'We've wanted to impeach this guy for three years. How do we do it? Oh wait, I think we've found a way,'" Anton, a former National Security Council (NSC) spokesman, said to WMAL's "Mornings on the Mall" co-hosts Vince Coglianese and Mary Walter Wednesday. "Here's the issue." "It just looks phony, and that's what they're trying to avoid coming out," he added. daily caller I wish they would stop saying "whistleblower" and say operative Posted by: artisanal 'ette at November 20, 2019 12:44 PM (vEIlU) 516

463 The Purple Heart should be very special and the the requirements should be clear.
Posted by: Quint at November 20, 2019 12:36 PM (n13/j) So true about many people's physical lives changed forever for their Purple Heart. My grandpa was badly wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a scout with the 25th cavalry - I think. All I know is he got shrapnel in his arm, head, and back, and was in a hospital in England for a few months. Once or twice he mentioned he received a Purple Heart. But he never talked about what is was like being in that battle. One can only imagine how horrendous it must have been. Kids don't need drag queens to read to them.
