Up through the 1920's. Note that the tugs and the steamer have very tall funnels, which indicates they are likely coal-fired. Based on the dress of everyone, especially the hats, I would suppose that this was done around, say 1914.

Posted by: Mikey NTH - The Outrage Outlet says Flatulus Toxicus is The Silent Killer! at November 22, 2019 09:39 AM (hLRSq)

49 This is a nice use of color to counteract light. The work is bright. The area on the right is lit up be a high sun and cloudless sky. That kind of thing could normally suggest warmth, but the color scheme is grays, whites and blues. These provide the chill. The iced over harbor, the hunkered-over men, and the heavy, grey clouds in the background add to the weight of the cold.

Where I live we get a lot of these bright, sunny, below-freezing days. It's annoying that the sun can't provide any relief from the bitter cold. I can really feel this painting. The man in the shadows on the extreme left really sells the mood for me.

Steam vessels got started in the second half of the 19th century, so I'd guess, until Ford's Model T became common, horse-drawn vehicles would have been the norm. As I understand it, milk and ice deliveries were still being handled by horse-drawn wagons until WWI in some communities, and even afterward in smaller towns.

Look through his other works on Wiki. His ability to use light, day or night, is very effective.

112 91 87 I seem to recall that Budd Schulberg had a short story about crime on the waterfront, among longshoremen and dockwallopers, in Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in the '50s or '60s. If I may... It's both. It's realist because it shows the hard labor of the working class without any romantic edification. Just showing the reality of their lives. It's impressionist because of the style of painting--that sketchy, sloppy application of paint--and it gives us a quick view of life at the docks in a large, modern city.

Officially, the Ashcans are an American School of Realism.

I have a picture with horses and the tractor working the same field. An earlier picture has a tractor with the steel wheels ... I guess the transition took some years, and horses were probably more dependable.

I knew farmers in central Mississippi that still used mules in the 60s and 70s. Almost always due to 3 things: 1) Old Men, 2) small acreage and 3) never learned how to maintain and fix tractors and other powered equipment. All gone now.

271 Tuna maker Bumble Bee Foods said Thursday that it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with an agreement from Taiwan-based FCF Fishery, its largest creditor, to purchase its assets for roughly $925 million.

The bankruptcy proceedings are meant to reduce Bumble Bees debt burden caused by recent and significant legal challenges and help facilitate the sale. In 2017, the company pleaded guilty for price-fixing and was fined $25 million for forming a cartel with Chicken of the Sea and Starkist. It still owes $17 million to the U.S. Department of Justice, according to its bankruptcy filing.

Bumble Bee is also facing civil lawsuits related to price-fixing. Earlier this year, the company confidentially settled with Sysco and U.S. Foods.

May he be sentenced to a long stretch, and may the young women involved get self defense training and concealed carry permits.

One of my kids friends in DC is a doctor who was stalked and threatened by a patient (hospitals are notoriously bad at helping with prosecutions..."we can't put our poor patients in jail!"). She was able to get a concealed carry, but it would be better had he been imprisoned, then deported.

If the IG confirms the latter, it blows everything the democrats have been saying all to hell.

361 This is right before they beat the crap out of Marlon Brando.
Posted by: Mr. Peebles at November 22, 2019 09:36 AM (oVJmc)

One of the actors playing the thugs who beat up Marlon Brando in 'On The Waterfront' was the then-retired professional heavyweight boxer Tony Galento, 'The New Jersey Nightstick', who had one of the most colorful careers in boxing ever. To give you the idea, he's one of the only fighters to ever knock down young Joe Louis. He also once heckled Jackie Gleason doing a standup routine and Gleason--not knowing who he was--invited him outside, which Gleason rates as his worst decision ever. Galento died several years ago but was outrageous and funny to the end.

365 AP) After two weeks of riveting public hearings in the House impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump. there is a mountain of evidence that is now beyond dispute.

Mountain of evidence that Trump did nothing wrong. You have testimony that Trump specifically said he wanted nothing from Ukraine for them to do the right thing and investigate election interference and corruption involving Americans. You also have the Ukrainian President saying he was unaware of any quid pro quo. That should be the end of it.

The democrats and Deep State insist that the Russians hacked it and downloaded the information through the internet.

If the IG confirms the latter, it blows everything the democrats have been saying all to hell.

Turns out, Biden is decaying and radioactive. They need to regroup. I suspect BOOT-A-JEDGE ticks most of those boxes and they can stomach him. Plus, he's probably even less competent and weaker than Biden, which means he will do nothing that is not focus-grouped and vetted through the state. To me, a neocon is someone in the ruling class who will tell people that they favor traditional conservative principles like small government but actually will always in private support a big government solution. They're not against big government, they think they can run it better than the dems can. And they never met a war they didn't like. We should remember that regime change and empire is big government on the foreign policy side of things.

527 To me, a neocon is someone in the ruling class who will tell people that they favor traditional conservative principles like small government but actually will always in private support a big government solution. They're not against big government, they think they can run it better than the dems can. And they never met a war they didn't like. We should remember that regime change and empire is big government on the foreign policy side of things.
Posted by: Augustine at November 22, 2019 11:12 AM (BDZWU)

yeah that is not really true especially your first part and it also had/has antisemitic connections. It really if better to criticize the person you are mad or dissapointed with with specific concerns. Keep it simple and accurate.
