The small church which I serve is going on a road trip to the house of two of our ill congregants this morning before our regular service. We will have communion and anointing with oil and prayers for healing. I don't think the church as a group has done this before. If you could keep us in prayer that the Holy Spirit would work in the lives of everyone there it would be much appreciated. Thx.

Not to anticipate the book thread, but upper-class cuckoldry is a recurring theme in modern British literature. The question of his son and heir's paternity continually gnaws at the protagonist of Ford Maddox Ford's Parade's End series and is also a plot point in several Evelyn Waugh books.

In his epic Sword of Honour trilogy, the protagonist takes back his ex-wife and hey remarry, despite him knowing she's pregnant by another man. In fact, that's a large part of why he does it, to universal scorn.

Some might call it a sort of masochism, but I think it goes to the heart of the changes in English social mores, that once looked upon adultresses as vile creature and then defined it as 'empowering' without allowing men any suitable response other than divorce - which of course was a scandal.

202 Couple of factors in Eddie Rispone loss in Louisiana.

One, the guy was a complete unknown and novice, he was a businessman before he threw his hat in the wring and he beat seasoned pols.

Once he beat the seasoned pols, the GOP did what the GOP does when their guy gets beat, they huffed and puffed and took their money with them.

Also John Bel Edwards essentially ran on a Conservatie platform.

Rispone was trailing badly in the weeks leading up to Trump's rally so him losing by a point or two is a minor miracle.

Bottom line in the losses in the South are either weak or unknown candidates going up against the Democrats money and media machines, and being hamstrung by GOPe feclklessness.

the strength of President Donald Trump's popularity.

Posted by: Colin at November 17, 2019 07:14 AM (gquwE)

Who thinks any of this works that way?

You win on your own merits.

The problem with "shocked" GOPers is that they run the lamest candidates possible or don't run anyone at all.

If it actually worked that way I could win the Texas Governorship based on Trump's popularity.

*Now back to reality*

I do think though that the Dims are going after Guvs and other state offices really intensely to help them in their efforts at cheating for the 2020 election.

This has been a big Soros effort since the W days.

You don't need to win the popular vote if you can control the vote count. ie. the lesson of FL with Gore.

The Democrats are so determined to turn America into a corrupt 3rd world shit-hole that we should start importing Penis Invading Parasites to help in the effort.

207 Any thought that Colin Kaepernick would humble himself to return to the NFL vanished in the first moments of a post-workout soliloquy Saturday night, a monologue that capped off a surprising all-in gamble for Kaepernick's future.

"I've been ready for three years, I've been denied for three years," Kaepernick told assembled media following a 40-minute workout. "We all know why I came out here: to show you today, in front of everybody, we have nothing to hide. So we're waiting for the 32 owners, the 32 teams, Roger Goodell, all of them, to stop running. Stop running from the truth, stop running from the people."

Kaepernick, sporting a black shirt that read "Kunta Kinte," began his
workout throwing passes of ever-increasing yardage to his receivers.

So he's been out of work for 3 years and decides to be his typical asshole self to convince someone to hire his mediocre self. The only response should be LOLGFY

On the whole Impeachment thing--
If the Democrats actually vote this out of the House, the Republicans, in the Senate can
1. Call all the same witnesses, ask them the questions Swifty won't allow.
2. Call the witnesses Swifty won't allow.
3. Make public all the things Swifty is hiding now.

Because of that, they have to drag this all out until late October of next year to keep the Senate from having the opportunity. And if they do try to keep this up for a year, even the Networks will get sick of it. They should have started this in about May of next year, San Fran Nan's original plan?

He was in some of the Astaire movies as well. Quite amusing.

It's worth noting that the "American" accent was different back then, having a stronger East Coast influence. The upper class in particular sounded English, because many of them went to English boarding schools.

Mass European immigration was also more recent, so people talked like their parents. There's a strong Irish lilt in voices from that era as well.

BTW, the Great War wiped out the Germans as a cohesive ethnic group. The German-language press shut down, many towns changed their names and they stopped speaking their native tongue lest they be thought to be enemy agents.

My grandfather told me that both his parents spoke German, which made some sense, since his mother's parents were immigrants. But his father's people came over decades ago from Wales (hence Lloyd), so how was it they spoke German?

Answer: lots of Germans settled in rural Ohio and his grandfather ALSO married a German girl.

If you look hard, you can see remnants of German culture, especially in the whole "order before liberty" mentality. Also, food.

Disagree on the funding.

Bureaucrats want to plan their TDYs and right now the expense accounts are locked up. This makes them irritable.

I think we run out of budget next week and being the Party of Free Stuff, the Dems are going to have problems if they keep screwing over their dependents like this. No, they won't vote for Trump, they simply won't vote. The gravy must flow.

The mortal threat is of course that the wine moms see that they were lied to and that "country over party" was bald-faced lie, the school lunch program is being denied funding, and so on.

Even the ones who don't work for the feds, often work with them. Those trendy non-profits aren't going to get their grants on a stutter-stop CR. That's going to wreck their mid-winter cruise plans.

In short, Pelosi is wrecking her majority here.

I disagree.

I think these people really are clueless. Maybe some of the funders have darker ambitions, but if you talk to them, it's clear the light-bulbs are pretty dim. Maybe 40-watt range, best-case 60.

Basic causality eludes them because they assume intent > results. They also have mentally boxed themselves in to think that some things are just out of bounds.

Thus: California can't use sane forestation policies because that would be EVIL and the solution has to be more windmills and solar, which will require more power lines in rural areas, leading to more forest fires.

Logic is useless.

The only hope (and there is hope) is not to use reason, but competing emotion. The way to reach the conspiracy-minded is to note that there's a deeper conspiracy by even more sinister agents on the ultra-ultra-right (which you know about, because you're initiated into it). Frightening how well that works.

Many of Trump's policies can be strongly defended from the left, and if the right was smart, they'd start going it.

273 Am I awake? A saf comment nearly made sense to me. I'd come to think of saf as a really poor random chatter generation program, so it's scary when it seems to be actually conversing. But it's rare enough I can still attribute any seeming intelligence to random chance.

274 How does Harris perform the mental gymnastics which are necessary in order for her to believe that Black Democratic voters who are rejecting her are racists?
Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at November 17, 2019 08:55 AM (cqNba)

I don't think she does. In her world - like that of most Dems - "America" is all the people in it if you win, and if you lose, "America" is all those fucking white racists.

280 These are related statements:

How does Harris perform the mental gymnastics which are necessary in order for her to believe that Black Democratic voters who are rejecting her are racists?

and

"Did he really say that? And did he really wear a Kunta Kinte shirt??? "

Let me just add, they call these Blacks who stray from the plantation "Uncle Tom".

This is a predictable feature of the Left. They use imagination and fantasy to construct their world - ergo, "Kunte Kinte" and "Uncle Tom" are real in their world.

Then toss in the never ending list of so-called hate crimes that they imagine they suffered.

So Harris doesn't go through any unusual mental gymnastics, she just simply draws deeply from the well of the fantasy and fiction.

That may be why the generation that lived through the Great Depression and WW2 would shake their heads when they hear our whining.

My Uncle Bill lived through the Depression and was an engineer in the Merchants on the Murmansk Run.

Wasn't until a bit later I fully understood that he really knew what he was talking about when he said that same phrase!

Interesting perspective! When I visited with my family last Easter my first reaction was why the hell did my ancestors ever leave? Sweden is cold and Africa is absolutely spectacular.
