Musical Interlude Politics If Michael Doran Were on Wall Street, He’d Be a Billionaire Excellent article about the cost of being right in DC. When asked to describe his approach to foreign policy, he insists it’s just good, old-fashioned realism. “It’s foreign policy realism based on states and their interests,” he said. “It’s what realism would look like if the people who call themselves realists were actually true to the intellectual principles that they claim to espouse.” Instead, he continued, too many of these people, under the sway of progressive politics, turned to moralism instead. “Progressivism,” he said, “is a modernist Protestant utopianism that believes in the perfectibility of mankind and believes the U.S. should be the vanguard bringing about the perfection of humanity. Trump revealed to us that much of the foreign policy elite on the right is simply the muscular wing of this progressivism. So traditional ideas going all the way back to Thucydides about how states should protect their interests are discarded, and a call for prudence is very easily depicted as a debased, immoral position.” Read the whole thing. Who is "we" Kemosabe? Looks to me like "we" should have invaded Berkely and Columbia Uni, Ann Arbor, Madison, Iowa City et al, instead of Bien Hoa. I don't hate the Vietnamese, far from it. But again, it's too convenient that our own borders are unsecured while worrying about the Crimeans or the Donbas. America should have crushed the Reds when America had the chance. Google's weekly town halls, internally known as "TGIF" meetings, have been emblematic of the company's professed belief in a transparent corporate culture, giving employees a chance to talk with management about plans for the future. But faced with an ongoing parade of leaks, Google is cutting the meetings back to once a month and shifting the focus away from employees' political concerns.
Today, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email to staff, which was obtained by The Verge, that the formerly weekly TGIF meetings will now be held monthly and will focus only "on product and business strategy." Posted by: SMOD at November 15, 2019 09:52 PM (X5CsJ) 29

I live in South Western Minnesota on an acerage, that's the term for a house that used to be a farm but is no longer. I rent ten acres, the house and two outbuildings, a garage and a quonset. My landlord farms the 240 acres surrounding my house.
Anyway, I shoot anything I desire any time I desire. Rifle, pistol, black powder... Often using Tenerite as a fun multiplier. I've had neighbors drive into the yard during our firing range operations, bringing their own weapons and joining in. The missus and i took a trip up to the wine countries of Sonoma and Napa. We had a wonderful time, the fall colors are spectacular.
We went thru areas that were completely burned to ashes down to the foundations of homes. Coffee fire. Tubbs fire. They are being rebuilt slowly. It takes up to 2 years just to get permits. If your home burns down to the foundation, you have to replace the foundation. And all the pipes and wires underneath. A nightmare. The good news is that some moisture has moved in and all the fires should soon be out. Posted by: navybrat, mostly lurking at November 15, 2019 10:08 PM (w7KSn) 98

Okay, long time gone.
2019 has been, to put it mildly, a year to forget. Was in hospital for seven weeks, divorce, life crashing, name it. How about a fun ONT exercise/parlour game? There are pop albums that begin with a bang, with a hit song that drives many impressionable youths to spend. But which albums begin with an awesome twosome? Two great hooks that make you happy you bought that whole album (yeah, I'm showing my forty-something age)? To be sure, the rest of the album may have been shyte, but . . . the USSR's desperate housing shortage could have been ameliorated with taller structures, but the country didn't possess sufficient raw materials to supply elevators for apartments above five stories.
Right - because there were no tall apartment buildings in the USSR. And the Soviet Union didn't have enough raw materials for building tall buildings. /s What the idiot author was taking about was Khrushchevki (because they were mostly built under Khrushchev) - Soviet regulations required that an elevator had to be installed in any apartment building over five stories tall, so lots of five story apartment buildings got built, to avoid the elevator requirement. Apartments built in a Soviet city center were generally much taller than that. The guy's argument basically is that a country that didn't have toilet paper couldn't possibly nuke us - anyone who knows how much of Soviet spending went to the military would understand that fallacy. Sound travels faster the denser the medium, but not well between media. So yeah, if the air is really humid, then it's very dense, so sound travels faster. But cold air is also fairly dense, and usually occurs when their is way less vegetation (different media).

While the divisions today vs Civil war may be kind of similar, the problem is that they are not n=really 'regional'. "Another album that starts with two great songs, because every song on it is great"
I got that feeling from the Killers' first album "Hot Fuss". And the Cure's "Disintegration". A standard pattern on a best selling album seems to be to start off with an epic, and move on to some catchy top 40 pop song. Of course, that assumes you have first written the material, like the Killers did in 2004 and the Cure in 1989. Otherwise you just got an album full of try-hard filler like Peter Murphy in 1992. "Holy Smoke" was shite. I guess I would consider myself a "classic rock" fan. But IMHO what is considered "classic rock", and what's not, is very much irrational and crazy. In my book for instance, 1950s rock standards (Elvis, Buddy Holly, Del Shannon) should be considered classic rock. No, they're just considered oldies. ------- One situation assumes a robust system of law enforcement, that is heavily tilted in favor of one faction. The other assumes a total breakdown of that system, where it can't effectively exert its will on any faction, in no small part because of fractures within its own ranks. In the second scenario, might makes right, and atrophied suburbanite hothouse flowers subsisting on soy products from Whole Foods won't fare nearly as well, without well-fed legions of well-armed and well-paid LE agents defending them. Just like the welfare CHUDs depend on the government checks clearing, and never having contact with organized enemy hostiles, so too do the police agencies. French Revolution, Russian Revolution, and Mexican Revolution all ended with the bad guys winning. And then they faced a reaction: Vendee, Civil War, and Cristeros respectively. I'm from the Fargo, ND area and you can pretty much shoot anywhere
outside of city limits. It is flat as f### up here, you can see you dog run away for two days. Thankfully, gravity prevents the bullets from flying to Montana. It got so cold up here last year propane stopped vaporizing so a lot of people didn't have heat at 40 below. I suggest buying some long johns, a new car battery, good boots and an ice scraper. Oh, by the way, if you notice the wind stopped blowing it means you're dead. My wife and I loved the week or so we spent stranded in Bismark last summer. As for the winter....I know, I know, but she's from Alberta, which is the same damn thing. I'm sure I could...adjust. Posted by: Weirddave at November 15, 2019 11:51 PM (k5ANL) 373

It's funny - once upon a time, part of my job was to go to Medical Staff department and committee meetings and take minutes. I wasn't a medical person but it didn't take long to notice the differences between the different medical specialties. The Family Practitioners and Internists and Pediatricians were the nicest but had a tendency to talk alot about problems without making final decisions. (On the minutes, the issue was usually "open" and carried over to the next meeting - for months.) The shrinks were the worst for beating around the bush and never seeming to solve anything. The surgeons were very blunt and direct, didn't waste time, "OK, that's solved, let's move on." Same with cardiologists. But I was also in charge of setting up the computers for Powerpoint presentations and stuff and if something went haywire (which usually was a matter of not plugging some cord in correctly), you DID want it to happen in a surgery meeting. They were not forgiving. Posted by: Donna&&&&V. at November 16, 2019 12:11 AM (d6Ksn) 434

Well, this morning I had to bribe the local Humane Society to spay my pup. Next I had to bribe Home Depot to give me some lumber to repair my deck. Then I bribed Costco into giving me a bunch of toilet paper, a big bag of roasted unsalted peanuts, two dozen eggs, a couple of big tins of Italian cookies, and a hot dog and Pepsi. Then I had to make a little quid pro quo arrangement with a Costco gas pump to juice up my car. I went to pick up my pup. Turns out that while they had her open, they discovered she had an umbilical hernia so I had to bribe them another $60 when I picked her up. We met our contractual obligations, but it turns out that we need to put in some extra hours... And this fucking bully intimidated me into working even MOAR HOURS, just so he'd look good. I'ma sue his evil ass in the HoR, and believe you me, I'ma turn on the waterworks when I do. I mean - it's obvious. He was trying to bribe me. If I continued on not doing a job, but collecting a paycheck for it, I'd have been fine. But this unscrupulous sonofabitch demanded labor for money. I'm on the payroll. I should receive pay for 80hrs, because I need to spend 40hrs charging retro videogames and organic sandwiches to the company card. Anything short of that isn't just bribery - it's extortion. You'll need closer to a half a section or so for a proper long rifle range, though. Posted by: garrett at November 15, 2019 09:44 PM (JSFuc) With a hill for backstop, you could get a hundred-yard range in on three acres, provided the adjoining land was not also 3-acre plots with homes on them. She'd been a tremendous expense, but he averaged the emotional chasm she had filled in his life against the steep initial outlay, and considered her years of plastic affection as a bargain at the price. Now, though, she had aged. Her rubberized skin, powdered for years to maintain smoothness, was brittle and gave off an odd, alien shine. One eye, once polished bright so that it looked moist, was dull. A toe had been broken (bitten?) off. Still, he was not ready to part with her. Her name was Helene, and she made him whole...

Posted by: Miklos, Admiral of the Ocean Sea at November 16, 2019 01:40 AM (QzkSJ) Far worse. I'm a lone agent, with no accomplice, communications, confederates or lackeys. One shot, and I'm gone for weeks or months, until the next shot. And never the same Method of Operations repeated, ever. Not to mention never the same barrel, chambering or ballistics. Or "profile" of target. Most of you have never gamed this shit out to the minute detail. 'Bout damn time that you do, capiche? I'll ask only that she allow her visage to adorn a U.S. combat aircraft as nose-art, in the Vargas tradition. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at November 16, 2019 01:50 AM (QzJWU) 547

Produced? The US government was the producer. Frank Capra directed. Posted by: Miklos, picking nits at November 16, 2019 01:52 AM (QzkSJ) 548

Waffles In The News So... this happened in Alabama and you thought about North Dakota? Man... I need to stop "tuning-in" late and start reading the comments on the ONT before I chime-in, I suppose. It was an excellent story, however. I might have just left without an Example to follow. Lesson I learned? ...Be The Example. If you move to rural Rowan County, NC, you can fire your gun in your yard at any time, no matter what time it is or how close the neighbor's house is. In fact, you can fire it across the actively used road with occupied houses downrange, or over the golf course behind you property, as long as you don't cause property damage. But I believe you are required to have no less than five non-functional vehicles and a steady stream of tweekers visiting you, based on what I've seen.

@ 389:
I found there is a reason pathologists don't become internists or Family Practitioners. No people skills whatsoever. Also tends to be true of radiologists. Been working with radiologists for 30 years now. It's improved in that they rarely throw things at techs anymore, and the HR departments and lawyers have shut down some the other shenanigans with you female techs. Now it's pretty much how much can you put up with a complete lack of awareness that the universe doesn't revolve around them.
