Lindsey Graham Blusters: We'll Call Adam Schiff as a Key Witness in Senate Phase of Impeachment

If I believed him, I'd say this was great news, but I don't believe him. He says things that he thinks will get people to make positive memes about him on Twitter. But then he doesn't do a damn thing.

He also says that the fake whistleblower should be called as a witness, or else there would not be any trial.

Here's his latest bid for meme-immortality.

Graham also said he wouldn’t let a trial of Trump be based on hearsay evidence alone. A trial would also not be held if the whistleblower doesn't testify, he said.

"Let's say they get 218 votes. Here’s what I promise the country. We’re not going to try the president of the United States based on hearsay. So any resolution setting up a trial in the Senate, I'm going to make sure that hearsay cannot be the basis of an impeachment allegation," Graham told host Sean Hannity.

"If you invoke the hearsay rule, what would be left?

"A trial in the Senate, to me, should not legitimize what's going on in the House. No American is denied the right to call witnesses on their behalf, except for Donald Trump. No American is accused of wrongdoing anonymously, except Donald Trump. What they’re doing in the House is a danger to the presidency itself.

McConnell, however, says that if the House impeaches, the Senate is required to put on a trial.

"I don't think there’s any question that we have to take up the matter. The rules of impeachment are very clear, we’ll have to have a trial. My own view is that we should give people the opportunity to put the case on," McConnell told reporters after being asked about dismissing the articles of impeachment.

There is chatter that some Senators may actually prefer not just to have a trial, but a long trial, in order to keep Democrat Senators running for president off the campaign trail and trapped in the Senate.

From the Washington Post:

Some Republican senators and their advisers are privately discussing whether to pressure GOP leaders to stage a lengthy impeachment trial beginning in January to scramble the Democratic presidential race -- potentially keeping six contenders in Washington until the eve of the Iowa caucuses or longer.

...

"That might be a strategy," Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) said with a coy smile when asked about the possibility of a trial that disrupts the Democratic campaign. "But I’ll leave that up to others. I'm just a lowly worker."

I think that's too clever by half and, who knows, possibly either an attempt to scare Democrat senators or an attempt to provide cover to Senators like Mitt Romney who actually want a long trial so that they can build a case for actually impeaching Trump. But it would be sold to Trump supporting Republicans as some kind of devious move to hurt Democrats.

Because they do like lying to us. Most of their political strategizing involves lying to conservative voters to pursue agendas that conservatives opposed while telling us that this is, in some tricksy way, all in the service of advancing our interests.

Suspect a long trial would make things tougher for Mitt.

No trial would allow Mitt to vote for impeachment on the grounds that there was no trial - he just wants a fair process after all.

69 There's not necessarily a conflict between what McConnell and Graham are saying. (there IS a conflict between that and a LONG trial)

How both McConnell and Graham could be speaking truthfully is this: McConnell calls a trial as he says he will; Graham is in charge of the witnesses, dismisses any non-witnesses that have hearsay only. Calls Whistleblower, calls Schiff. Maybe they come, maybe not. If not, then the prosecution phase is over, no evidence, call for a vote for verdict, based on Evidence presented, which will be None. The End.

So if it's bribery to ask for something in return for aid, then every American official ever involved in foreign aid is guilty of "bribery". It just doesn't work. This is where Schiff goes off and says "But Trump asked for personal benefits!!!" and we have to say "No, He didn't. He asked Ukraine to investigate Corruption."

146 I think the House failing to impeach is the best option for Trump. Almost as good would be an impeachment, followed by a long Senate trial finding Trump not guilty. Trump gets a boost from either, but a long Senate hearing hurts Dems and makes the Trump boost closer to the election. Discovery, of sorts, more freedom to call and examine liberal witnesses...the Dems don't want any of that.

This is true, but also incomplete.

We have gone from a legal process to a political process to a pageant. It is no longer about "high crimes and misdemeanors", nor is it about dems having enough votes.

It is about how bad it makes the dems look to continue this vs. how bad they look for giving up, vs, the potential for them to send a clear message of disapproval (which will be quashed by the Senate.)

They want the third option, right now they are at the first. R goal should be to either make them give up, or to go to Senate and rub their noses in the crap so they suffer.

169 IMHO, there are several things going on.

One is the whole Chamber of Commerce-Mitch McConnell and his cohort dynamic.

Another is that both Burr and McConnell are implicated along with the Dem leadership in FISA abuse and the Trump dossier dissemination.

Third, most of the Gope and Dems are engaged in wholesale orgies of legalized graft and bribery through campaign funds, jobs for their spawn, and gifts from foreign entities.

Fourth, I believe that a lot of the GoPesters in Congress have adopted a nihilistic attitude toward this country and are grabbing what they can before the deluge.

They have given up and are more or less waiting on the Dems to consolidate their power. They believe what the media, education, corporations, and their wealthy donors are telling them--that the GOP long term is finished. That is what fear of the future can do to individuals--make them corrupt, malleable, and cowardly.

Well then, give it to them good-n-hard. Some rules to make it all official: The president must be addressed or referenced as "My Personal Lord and Master" every time he is mentioned; Everyone shall wear a Trump mask and MAGA hat at all times; All Democrat questions will be written in disappearing ink one week before any testimony is given and after the text has faded; Testimonials must be given in Klingon; In order to testify, witnesses must swim through a vat of pig, hippo, and cat crap; Democrats must concede their seats and pay all of their deposited campaign funds to a Republican running for their now abandoned seat.

Then the dems and their media pals promptly leak the R yes votes. Dems run on the issue and win, asking if you can trust a Senator who votes secretly against his/her own party's CinC. They are that brazen.

The democrats will get the republicans to oust Trump, then see to it that the Stupid Party is solely punished for it by the electorate. I hope the Senate isn't THAT stupid but I'm not confident in that bunch at all.

243 Again, an impeachment trial does not bind senators to the floor, or DC. Members do not speak or ask questions [in the floor portion] - whatever's in Lindsey's committee would only affect members of that committee. Witnessed a couple judges and Clinton being impeached - floor is pretty normal, i.e. empty, most of the time. Might be an annoyance for a few, but not a big deal for most [of those with primary or re-election work elsewhere].

I actually think Lindsey is serious here, as well. I get being depressed and hopeless but these guys are almost all lawyers and you can almost hear their chins hitting the floor how this is being handled and what is being said.

I suspect that at least some of them thought that the Dems really might have something on Trump but now they know the whole shebang and its absolutely ... its hard for me to find the words for how childish and awful their case is.

274 I'm not sure if they all would, but I do think there is something to the theory of wanting to impeach him just to boost the argument - to these (and other) GOP senators - that an impeached president who clearly does not have the support of half the people should not be allowed to appoint a Justice and we should at least wait until the election.

An election Trump wins

---------------

More than likely - yes. But it gives them a better argument for persuading some GOP senators why they should delay.

It would rev up their base, but rev up Trump's at the same time.

I didn't say it was a wise strategy - just that it may be part of the strategy of the Dems.

296 After so many disappointments, it's easy to think one's enemies are stronger than they really are. But Three things recently are giving me great hope, and I feel better than I have in quite a while.

1. ALL the House Republicans voted against Pelosi's "Impeachment Authorization". They couldn't stop it, of course, but it shows welcome solidarity. Also they did a magnificent job of ripping through the lies on the first day.

2. Dem's were supposed to lead with their best witnesses yesterday, and they had absolutely nothing. It was pathetic! Some bow tied dweeb hemming and hawing about policy? And there's no prospects for anything better coming up.

3. I know the waiting has been hard, but the IG's report really is coming out quite soon now. That's the counter attack. This has been building for a long time, and there is going to be a LOT there.

Yesterday was a Big Turnaround - cheer up! It wasn't quite like sinking 4 carriers in 15 minutes, but it was close. Momentum turned yesterday.

339 You know what I want to know?

The Dems had a members-only caucus.
That is where Adam Scheiff made his case that he had 100% lead-pipe lock on the case for impeachment.

What did he tell them?

We can guess. Because he was also so confident later that he read his version of the call into the official record.

How many Dems are now saying, what you've shown is nowhere near what you promised you had.

But, I will tell you this: It wasn't bribery.

That's something that is loud and easy to understand--there's no way in hell they wouldn't have lead with that if that's what he said.
Instead, we've got this mushmouth, well bribery can be from both the granting and the withholding the aid in exchange for anything that directly or indirectly at some time, some where, some how, may have helped Trump.

That's so much clearer than directly lying under oath and swearing you never had sex with your intern.

345 170 I think Mitch will end the show quickly.
Witnesses completely dismantling the accusations, and move on. Why?
Mitch McConnell is focused on confirming judges, partly as a payback to the dems changing the rules on filibusters. He was truly furious, remember he warned them right after they did it. They would come to regret it sooner than might think.
IMHO-- he is absolutely determined to teach me a lesson on Chesterton's fence; and he is not going to let a bogus impeachment attempt get in the way of that.

In the Johnson impeachment, they did indeed have a Trial on 3 of the charges. Those charges were held not Guilty on party line votes.

Then they dropped the rest. Didn't HAVE a trial on those charges.

So the Precedent is that the Senate can DECIDE what is an impeachable offense, even without a trial.

The Dems have a set of tactics to meet their overall strategy.
Their strategy is to retake the White House, dominate the Congress and have their way to remake society.

Their tactics against Trump are either to impeach or discourage voters with this constant drumbeat of accusations. The Media is of course, part of the game in attacking Trump non-stop, 24/7/365. If you have been watching CNN or MSNBC at all in the last few years (which is stupid and painful), it is an all-day, every day jihad against Trump.

It ends now!

The Democrats can help us pass these bills to make American even greater or they can obstruct and try to illegally remove a duly elected President with lies.

We hope you the American voter remember this at the ballot box.

384 For anyone who missed what Lindsey Graham was talking about with the Judiciary Committee, the Senate Republicans have chosen to self impose 6 year term limits on their committee chairman, so that they don't have committees that are run one one man for decades. They did not have to do this , but they have chosen to do this. Lindsey Graham has been Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee for long enough that he runs into those self-imposed term limits after the next election. SO, he has said rather than going back down to being just a committee member, he'll let someone newer have his slot, and he'll go to some other committee instead. That's all. It is NOT a big deal.

yeah, that seems to be the best road forward. I am sure Mitch and Linds are considering their options.

I wonder if they haven't just decided on the clever route so that they can embarass schiff.

1. call schiff as first witness
2. if he refuses, then dismiss with the straight vote.
3. if he shows up and talks, but somehow does not perjur himself, then dismiss with the straight vote.
4. if she shows up and lies like a fucking rug, then dismiss with the straight vote and then SWAT raid him like Stone.

428 if the Ukraine staffers are testifying that they have defied Trump directives ... because they prefer their own foreign policy ... seems they are testifying against themselves.

No matter how sincere they are (and I doubt they are sincere, they are crooks and villains) about undermining Trump for "the good of the country", they are sabotaging the duly elected Executive.

Do you rent out your houses or apartments?

Look at what the Wash State Supreme Court just ruled on a Seattle rent ordinance. By a 9-0 vote, they backed a Seattle law that forces landlords to rent to the FIRST applicant who applies, with very minimal restrictions.

Oh, and now a landlord cannot check for past CRIMINAL history. So if a Nazi-tattooed freak with prior violent felonies and a 700 credit score applies, and in your other units you have kids and families, too bad for you and the other tenants.

Ultimately, what this Savant-led new city law does is two things: get Mom and Pop owners out of the rental business completely, because they cannot afford the losses, and big commercial RE companies will simply raise rents overall to deal with the increased damage from bad tenants, and good tenants moving out to get away from the freaks/criminals.

9-0. The Communists have absolutely taken over Washington State. Commercial property ownership is a thing of the past for small investors.

Shed a tear for those Americans that still live here.

BTW, we aren't leaving, so someday, we may be requesting backup ammo and supplies. Just giving a heads up.

449 A comment I made on Althouse. tl;rd: A long trial would be awesome. Mitt can want whatever he wants, but Senators are Jury, not triers:

rcocean said...
BTW, McConnell and the Senate R's could stop this in its tracks by simply saying they will vote it down the second the House impeachment articles arrive. IOw, they are Dead on Arrival.

Instead Mitch is talking about a long trial. Why is that? Curious how a Republican Senate is so Unsupportive of a President with a 90% R Approval rating.

Why in the world would they want to stop them?

1: The Senators, BTW, are members of the Jury, so they have to sit there and shut up. All those Democrat Senators, running for President, will be stuck in DC, doing nothing. During key campaign time . Talk about fun for the GOP

2: The charges are utter crap. The longer they get to question all the Democrats "witnesses", the longer they get to put this pathetic crap in front of the American voters, the better off the GOP is.

3: This "impeachment" has been the scene of one crime after another. All the crimes coming from the people pushing it. Bring the WB forward. Make him testify under oath. How did you find out about this? Who did you talk to? Who did you talk to before you filed your complaint?

Call the IC IG. When did you change the "whistleblowing" rules? Why? Did you have conversations with anyone about the changes?

Call Schiff. Who did you talk to? When? Schiff has been lying all over the place. Getting him under oath will be a LOT of fun.

Get Vindeman under oath. Who did you talk to? Who did you leak this classified information to? he wants to take the fifth, on National TV? Excellent! "So, Lt. Col, because you personally disagreed with the way the US President was running his foreign policy, you violated the law and leaked classified information in any attempt to obstruct the President's foreign policy, and replace it with your own?" "No, I was replacing it with the proper foreign policy as determined by the Intereagency." "So, Col, you believe that the proper determiners of US foreign policy are faceless government bureaucrats, not the elected President of the US?"

By the time they're done, not one GOP Senator will vote for impeachment. Joe Manchin will definitely vote against. Jon Tester might vote against. Doug Jones will accept that he's going to lose in 2020, & vote for. But Sienma might very well vote against.

And Trump will cruise to an easy re-election, because the public will look at this, say "after 4 years of screaming, the best they could come up with against Trump was this total nothing-burger? I guess he's not that bad."

Because that's what happens when you strike at the King, and miss.

Please, keep on pushing this sh!t show

459 I can only imagine 4 GOP Senators voting against Trump in a trial: Murkowski (duh), Collins, Romney Sasse. The D-Rats need 20 to
convict.
The typical GOPe Senators are outstanding at passive-aggressive back-stabbing sabotage, but when it comes to an open vote to remove a President who is wildly popular amongst their constituents, and has by any objective measure been a huge policy success...Naahhh, they're not gonna put themselves at risk.If I'm wrong, I truly see assassinations and civil war in our near future, horrendous.

460 I favor a long, long trial with many, many witnesses. The list is long. I think that is the only way to go. A short trial, and Democrats complain about it for the next year. With a long trial we can potentially expose many wrong doers to the public and undo the Democrat party and the Media, but I repeat myself, and possibly make it a lot easier to destroy the worst of the deep state. Time to return the favor to all those participating in the coup. Make them lawyer up. Bankrupt them, and if they lie under oath prosecute them all to the full extent of the law.

Posted by: Arnie at November 15, 2019 12:28 AM (G+9J1)

462 I actually believe Graham. If you listen carefully to what Graham said, without hearsay evidence there is no case to try, and he will not allow hearsay evidence which is almost the entire Democrat case. I don't think that is something Graham can or will go back on. McConnell and Burr can talk about

The question is whether the Anit-Trump RINOs- McConnel, Burrl Cronyn,et al will try to overrule him. I not sure they can. If there is not case and the committee finds there is no case, that would be the trial and it would be over.

464 Look at what the Wash State Supreme Court just ruled on a Seattle rent ordinance. By a 9-0 vote, they backed a Seattle law that forces landlords to rent to the FIRST applicant who applies, with very minimal restrictions.

Further: if you look at any significant municipalities, they don't want small property owners, they want Big Apartment who they can coerce into the shit they want.

It's entirely fuck-the-little-guy.

Joe Five-Unit can't afford what they're trying to do to him.

I have relatives in this situation and most of their units are occupied by family. If they can't be condo-converted, well, they won't take a bath but it'll be far down from what they'd projected for retirement.
