The President, Not Stuffed Shirt Paper-Pushers in the Federal Bureaucracy, Is Invested With the Foreign Policy Power by the Constitution

Sharyl Atkinsson pointing out something so obvious only a Genius Bureaucrat or Elite Journalist could fail to understand and remember it.

The Huffington Post wrote, "State Department officials say Rudy Giuliani’s foreign policy backchannel 'undercut' U.S. policy on Ukraine."

And Ambassador Taylor testified, "The official foreign policy of the United States was undercut by the irregular efforts led by Rudy Giuliani."

There must be some confusion.

Under the U.S. Constitution, it is the president of the United States who determines foreign policy. How can President Trump be "at odds with foreign policy" when he's the one who determines it?

President Trump may well have been altering foreign policy on Ukraine. It should be of no surprise that he wasn't operating "business as usual," since he ran on that platform and has executed it from day one. It's clear that Kent and Taylor didn't like or agree with Trump’s ideas, and believe they know what’s best. Trump rankled, contradicted and “embarrassed” them by operating outside the "regular" chain.

But they seem to miss the fact that their desires are subordinate to the president's. "Official foreign policy," as they called it, is not an independent unmovable-force object that exists outside the president’s authority; it is what the president determines it to be. The diplomats must execute the president's wishes or resign from their posts if they feel they cannot bring themselves to do so.

Partisan Obamabot and self-important softdick Vindman is another of the Best and Brightest managerial class who doesn't understand very simple things.

Attention Bureaucrats in the Federal Bureaucracy-

Not to interfere with them.

If you don't wish to facilitate his policies, then the only honorable (and probably legal) thing to do is to quit.

So.....quit. Ande learn to code.

Don't be so bourgeois and old-fashioned. Our job is to keep the wheels of state turning, and the machine itself pointed int he direction of progress. The president's policies barely factor into it unless our received wisdom and, dare we say it, divine knowledge lead us to know that we need to fight him.

We serve at the pleasure of the state and with the grace of God, and our job is *not* to support the president's policy if we think otherwise.

I think Trump is not very good at hiring. Its obvious from the many, many bad hires he's done. At first you could kind of blame "bad advice from GOPe people he relied on for a transition team" but by now its just obvious that he's putting almost no thought or effort into most of his hires and relying on other people's input then rubber stamping it.

I mean, its not easy to find any non-leftist who won't try to destroy America and betray him in the state department, but Ukraine doesn't exactly justify our top ambassadorial staff. And for over a century the job of ambassador has typically gone to a political ally, that's how Joe freakin' Kennedy got to be the ambassador to the UK.

I hope so. I think the reason that some of Trump's bad staffing choices haven't burned him too badly is twofold:
1) He fires them quickly when they don't work out
2) He isn't giving them ammunition to succeed in their real mission.

If Trump was who his enemies think he is (that is, a crook), these people would be able to contain him through much less than they have already done. But he doesn't seem to be a crook, so it just keeps failing and blowing up on them.

who is reporting this

how is "struggling" defined? Not making sufficient income to require payment of federal income tax?

I vividly recall the news during Reagan's term telling for years that the country was failing night after night. It became ridiculous when most people knew multiple people out of work under Carter who had started working again about two years into Reagan.

A tyranny of slander, lies and defamation.

277 @166
I agree. From my knowledge of the period the Johnson impeachment is much closer to the current dynamic than Nixon or Clinton. Johnson was an abrasive a-hole and to many in Congress he seemed backsliding on the overall war aims of the Union, and so the Congress drummed up a lot of legislative (unconstitutional) traps like the Tenure in Office Act so they could say "gotcha" and impeach primarily because they couldn't stand the guy or his policy.

But then you had a number of Congressmen in both parties who stepped back from the brink and considered the precedent of conviction over political aims to be a bridge too far. I have less confidence in the historical perspective and principal of today's legislators. I don't think Trump will be convicted and I'd say its even money if the House even "impeaches" on the current trajectory, but the comparison is interesting.

Pelosi should resign for being such a patsy, and Schiff should be tarred and feathered and run out on a rail -- by Democrats.

282 Well, by their own beliefs, The Left is and *should always be* the default Ruler-Of-Everything.

Over at Neo's they were talking about the absolute impossibility of communication between groups of people who have differing First Principles. (It was couched as "people who have different Realities", but it's the same thing.)

If I and my group believe we are Divinity Itself walking amongst lesser beings, we are not going to engage those lesser beings on points of policy. (We don't ask cattle if they want to be tonight's dinner, either.)

On the other hand, if my group believes that we are not Divine, but fundamentally weak-and-stupid, we approach life and governance in a much different way.

This difference in outlook goes back to the time of Moses.
"OK, the Lord has delivered us; here are the rules that God says we should live by."

284 ((woopsie, who moved my Enter key?))

"These are the rules we should live by" said Moses

"We want a king. Where is our king. GIVE US A KING", said the newly freed people.

"You don't need a king. These are the rules, follow them, you are free, no longer slaves, and God promises the fullness of the earth to you if you act according to his rule. You don't need a king; why would you want to be slaves to a king when you just received freedom after generations of slavery?"

But "We Want A King" was still the clamor of the people.

It seems to me that's the Eternal Tension between people: some want to rule, and some want to BE ruled (it makes life so much easier- the guys on top get their way; the peons don't have to worry about making decisions, and they get to whine and threaten the social order when bad times hit).
Then there are those OTHER people who want to make their own rules and live their own lives and suffer or profit from the consequences of their choices.

ETERNAL. TENSION. And for some reason, this tension is bubbling up all around the world in our current era...

286 Bribery???? I think when the founders thought of High Crimes, they thought of "Bribery". Basically at that time Benedict Arnold was bribed by the Brits with money, a Command in their army and property in England (things of value) otherwise he would not have committed treason. I believe this is the Bribery they thought about, selling out on the U.S., not paying other countries to do our bidding. That happens on a daily basis in many countries. They need to be careful because they received bribes in many ways, such as gifts, kids hired for huge money (Biden) and the Clinton Foundation to name a few. Trump has not committed bribery and Epstein did not kill himself.
