You cry out in fright, but your friends burst out laughing: it was all just a trick. You begin laughing too, red-faced for having fallen for it — after all, only kids believe in ghosts… right? Believe it or not, two of history’s brightest minds were actually dedicated ghost hunters, convinced of the presence of specters within our physical world. To that end, these men built tools to contact such spirits — and the messages that returned from the other side are enough to make anyone’s hair stand on end. Michigan hunters save their prey from death. H/T Clutch In a bright indoor space in Camden’s Stables Market, a giant tampon is flanked by giant menstrual cups. Illustrations of female genitalia are dotted around the walls and some underwear is in a glass case. This is the world’s first vagina museum dedicated to gynaecological anatomy, which opens this weekend in north-west London. The museum exists thanks to a public fundraising drive, with more than 1,000 people collectively donating almost £50,000. The director, Florence Schechter, says her motivation behind setting up the space was simple. “I discovered there was a penis museum in Iceland but no vagina equivalent anywhere else so I decided to make one,” she says. As tuition costs soar, more students and their families are asking themselves if college is still worth it. Some experts say the value of a bachelor’s degree is fading. Starting salaries for new college graduates have grown less than 1% over the past two years, remaining at around $50,000. Worse yet: A decade after leaving school, more than 1 in 5 graduates are working in a job that doesn’t even require a degree. https://www.aei.org/economics/maps-of-american-restaurant-quality/ Nerves of steel and quick thinking. Howdy Horde, and Shavuah Tov!
Thanks, MisHum, for the ONT!! MIL Update: Mom's doing much better, we found a terrific Assisted Living facility nearby, and spent today beginning to move some of her stuff there (it's essentially a studio apartment, talk about downsizing!). We'll finish tomorrow, and she moves in Tuesday. This is cool: They're having a big Thanksgiving Fest/Dinner Tuesday night, and we're all going to be there with her (and 200 other folks). Should be a great way to immerse her in the new digs. She thinks it's temporary, and it *may* be, but likely not. So we shall see. One good thing is that one of her former neighbors is also a resident, so she goes in with at least one person she knows and likes. Posted by: ibguy at November 16, 2019 10:07 PM (EHVbt) 13

Interesting Tweet from a Portland leftist:
the warren/sanders sniping is so so so so so so so so exhausting please don't bring that onto my timeline and instead start figuring out how to make sure the party frontrunner Joe Biden doesn't win the nomination and how we are gonna tackle climate change please and thank you Hadn't thought about it much, but there is an ongoing civil war on the Left. Bernie is a full-on Commie - when he talks about there being too many brands of deodorant and jailing fossil fuel executives, everyone thinks he means exactly what he says. Warren? Even though Wall Street now says they won't contribute to the Democrats; if Warren looks like the nominee, they'll cut a deal with Warren. After all, she had no problem representing big companies in asbestos litigation. Warren is already backing away from Medicare for All, initially promising just a "public option" (I think that's already called Medicaid). So Bernie gets the True Believers, Warren gets the academic class (a major part of the Democratic base), along with the fanatic feminists who are convinced that Hillary Wuz Robbed and will never support a male presidential candidate until a women has been elected to the White House. And both groups hate Biden as much as they hate each other - it would be just incredibly dispiriting to them that just as the Hard Left has captured the Democratic Party, that a "moderate" retread like Biden would be the nominee. So, this amplifies my support for Biden as the Democratic nominee - I think that he's not physically capable of running a general election campaign, but it will also kill the enthusiasm level among the people who are usually the foot soldiers in a Democratic race. Colorado: one party D state; TABOR wins 55% on an off year. Kentucky: Republicans run the table and tie / narrowly-lose the governor race La Louisiane: Republicans run the table including (now) SoS; governor is going KY The Republican message wins. Republicans win... down ballot. But the Republican holding the banner loses. People want to live under Republican rule as long as they don't live under actual Republican party-members. How much does a Republican have to lead by on election night to be declared the winner next week after all the chicanery? In CO, with mail balloting, I'd call it 3-5 points.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice This is a pretty conservative state - so those issues mostly revolve around the corrupt votes in and around New Orleans (very much Democrat strong holds) and Baton Rouge - but it looks like those precincts are mostly in now so not enough to cheating catch up if the rural parishes in the north are the ones outstanding - which looks to be the case. Anyone here into alternate history timelines? I spent the last couple of hours surfing the Alternate History Forum for the first time in a while, and I found some really interesting timelines. These are posted and update periodically by forum participants.
Of course a lot of the pre-1900 history timelines feature attempts to redo the Civil War. One timeline has the US losing the War of 1812 and Britain maintaining a prescence in the continental present day US well into the mid-19th century, with some interesting consequences. Another timeline has Joseph Smith, the Mormon prophet, being elected prez in 1844 after renouncing polygamy and embracing abolitionism (he did IRL consider running for POTUS but got killed before he could do so). Smith's election ends up essentially starting the Civil War 16 years early and blending it with the Mexican War.... shifty shift and demorats laugh.
shift runs a criminal/illegal investigation to impeach the President, denying the President to face his accusers. The President is denied his legal rights at the beginning, allowing questionable/criminal tactics to be used. Afterward the Republicans are allowed into the investigation, Republicans validating the investigation (in doing so). House rules deny the criminal actions to be reviewed, gone over. Bunch of postmortems on Amazon's failure to get a more moderate city council elected in Seattle - throwing a million dollars into the races at the last minute apparently backfired badly, and the city council is now even more left-wing and radical than it was before.
Does create a problem for Amazon - particularly if the national government doesn't turn hard-left, being located in a blue city is extremely problematic, given the increasingly toxic left-wing politics of blue cities. Ambassador Yovanovitch or the Ukraine prosecutor Lutsenko are lying about a "do not prosecute" list that the now-fired Ambassador claims she never issued to him. He says she did exactly that.
from GP: In her opening statement Yovanovitch also denied pressuring former Ukrainian prosecutor Lutsenko not to investigate anti-corruption individuals or groups. Marie Yovanovitch: As for events during my tenure in the Ukraine, I want to reiterate first the allegation that I disseminated a do not prosecute list was a fabrication. Mr. Lutshenko, the former Ukrainian prosecutor general who made that allegation has acknowledged that that list never existed. Lou Dobbs: Oooh, not quite! Not quite! As investigative journalist John Solomon and The New York Times have both reported Lutsenko denies that he ever retracted that allegation. But WA is a vote by mail state, and as long as a postmark on the day of voting was on the envelope, it counts. Even if it takes nearly a week to get them all in. Odd, why did it take up to 5 days to get the local votes from a local election arrive to be counted? We will just leave that one to ponder on it's own. But what is well known is that there is an ability to get a postmark of the day very late into the evening if you drive to a certain post office and drop it off. It does not show the time, only the day. And Savant caught up and passed her opponent and won going away. This is what a corrupt voting system looks like. Amazon last year responded to the Savant-Commie proposed head tax by canceling an option on a new downtown Seattle skyscraper lease, and getting over 3 million sq. ft. of office space across the lake in Bellevue. They have since signed on to a big lease in what will be the largest skyscraper ever in Bellevue, going up now. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at November 16, 2019 11:45 PM (sy5kK) 405

Losing in KY and LA sucks. The president put his weight behind this. of the handful of states that have actually moved right over the last couple of decacdes, LA and KY are on that list.
I don't know the details or personalities. But someone at the RNC needs to figure out what is going on. My personal opinion is a percentage is on Trump's style at times and the rest on on a scorched earth media that is getting results. Yes, they have destroyed their credibility but their hair on fire inanity does get results. Many want to avoid conflict and are willing to give up their principles if they had them in the first place. The biggest mistake people make imo is believing just because the media beclowns itself that it doesn't have an effect. Conservatives should have come on in force to defend the president, Rispone notwithstanding. A lot of people who are not political junkies just don't care enough until it impacts them personally and they are told why it impacts them personally. What other reason can their be? And yes, there is cheating too. Posted by: Quint at November 17, 2019 12:33 AM (n13/j) 508

While as valuable as the WWII U.S. silver nickels, I understand that the pre-1982 Canadian nickels (which were, in fact, made of nearly pure nickel) are also worth considerably more than face value if you can find them.
The Canadians went to cupro-nickel for a while (like our "nickels") but apparently they're now nickel-plated steel. Intrinsic value: close to zero, like our zinc "pennies". Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at November 17, 2019 12:40 AM (oQp6r) 522

Steve Wozniak (the "other" Apple guy) used to buy uncut sheets of $2 bills from the mint and have a print shop cut them into multi-bill squares, perforate them, and make them into pads, so he could tear them off for tips or whatever. It freaked the hell out of people, and at one time resulted in him talking to the Secret Service in Vegas. Very confused SS agent (feeling the perforated edge): "Bills don't come this way." Someone mentioned silver certificates above. My Pappaw carried a silver certificate in WWII. On his way home, he was going to throw it at the feet of the Statue of Liberty. They came back a different way from Europe though, so he kept it. Put it in a portrait of his enlistment photo. Stayed there for 60 years, untouched.
My parents have the portrait now (my uncle got the P-38 and SS knife- which has the tip broken off because my grandfather used it to pry something loose on the car, he kept it in the garage tool box for 40 years, kind of showed what that one was worth to him.) The HBO movie Flashpoint, with Kris Kristofferson has a minor plot point dealing with silver certificates. Kris has to go to a coin and currency dealer to figure out if the stash of money he found was legal tender. He didn't know what Silver Certificates were and if they were still legal tender.
BTW, I thought it was a fun movie. It was the Lone Wolf Mcquade era and genre so it wasn't exactly great. It would be problematic today just because they were Border Patrol. But everything that came before is problematic in this silly age. The funny thing is most of the problematic movies were made by libs, staring libs, trying to make a liberal point. Counterpoint - The failure of N. or S. American cultures to develop the wheel, or smelt metals.
Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at November 16, 2019 10:27 PM (xSo9G) Even moreso, the Chinese with a millennia of smelting bronze, casting Iron, and developing and using gunpowder, as well as willing tutelage by the Jesuits in Macao on how to cast cannon, were still using cannon at the beginning of the Boxer rebellion that Sir Francis Drake would have considered a bit old fashioned. Most traditional societies reject and resist technological change because it will act to overturn the society and all its prerogatives to its elites. Such a change will also destroy the traditional worldview and generally -- at least from the starting point of adapting change -- will not show any advantage to be created to offset the chaos it causes. Europe found technological change and the willingness to upend the various cultures in pursuit of those technologies from a process of dislocation from various plagues, discrediting of the traditional cultural leaders, hybridization of technologies (like shipbuilding) from prolonged contact and trade, and finally from the increasing military demands for better weapons to continue wars for dominance, which in part were made possible by wealth from the new world. Further, instead of being slotted away, each new technological innovation was used and improved upon, with each iteration speeding up the next step. China, Africa, and the Turks were not willing to accept these changes in full, and did not build on them as was done in Europe. Posted by: Kindltot at November 17, 2019 01:42 AM (1glZx) 593

Before my great uncle passed away, he told my Grandpa and me to rip apart a corner cabinet he owned. He said there are all kinds of coins in there in secret compartments that you will never find unless you destroy the cabinet. When he was young (very late 1800's) there was a tinker that came around to the farm on a horse drawn wagon every so often and Uncle would give him paper money for the tinker to go to the Philly Mint and buy $20 gold pieces to be given back to my Uncle on one of the return trips.
When he died, we did as he asked. We must have pulled out 40-50 gold pieces from the early 1900's and loads of other things. He was a hell of a guy. ![]() Posted by: Tonypete at November 17, 2019 01:58 AM (Y4EXg) 600

Posted by: Jean at November 17, 2019 02:15 AM (mYGbK) No, not really. Generally that what the original tech was developed for, and in the rest of the world, that is what it would continue to be used for. however, the same tech to cast iron cannon, also can be used to cast pots, and pulleys, and gears, and wagon trucks and rails and then finally be used, along with the tech developed to make draft furnaces in the beginning, to power trip hammers, spinning and weaving machines, pumps, and eventually steam engines. Each step creates more invention and technology, and greater use of power and greater productivity which creates greater opportunities to figure what else you can do. Traditional societies understand that most things fail, and that time wasted in a marginally subsistance society is effort lost. Better to keep to what you know, the cobbler sticking to his last sort of situation. A more modern society understands there are huge profit waiting for anyone willing to reach for it. But it is not obvious until the idea becomes embedded into a society, and there is enough proof that success will payoff, if it works. When I bar tended back in the 80's, I used to get quite a few $2.00 silver certificates and I would always buy them from the register. One night I picked up a $5.00 depression era bill. It was drawn on the Bank of Hebron Ohio, had a red seal, and a lot of the lettering was brown. I would still have it if my sister hadn't spent all of my silver certificates and that five dollar bill while I was out over the road because she was broke. She also cashed in about three hundred dollars worth of change, two custom made pool cues, a 410 shotgun, a nickel plated Ruger .38 revolver, a Ruger 10/22 rifle, a nice cassette deck, and some of my clothes. Told me they were all stolen. I went to call the cops on the guns, and she admitted that she sold them all. I confiscated her car and made her sign over the title. There was no getting any of it back. After 30 years, I'm still kind of pissed at her for ripping me off.
