The actual sin here that you should know - the media has been charged with taking any tragedy that might unite EVERYONE in a common brotherhood of healing, and using it to purposely divide us, tearing open wounds at any weak point they can find, to cement those wounds in place. If your country, such as the UK, doesn't allow you to renounce citizenship and continues to recognize you, then in all practical terms, yes, you are a dual citizen, and no America doesn't "stop" it. The LDS settlements down there were originally started at least in part to avoid the US Government's persecution of the LDS Church over polygamy. So if someone says, "Gee, what were a bunch of white Mormon heretics doing down there," then someone else will reply, "That's where a bunch of Mormons moved a long time ago to avoid persecution over polygamy!"

Canada spent a lot of money earlier this decade when things went haywire in Lebanon and the Canadian military airlifted a whole bunch of Lebanese-Canadians to Cyprus. Once things settled down, pretty much all of them went back to Lebanon. Many of them had never set a foot in Canada. As a result, the Harper government changed the law regarding how many generations can get citizenship from a relative. The Trudeau government reversed it.

In Mexico, unlike here, there actually are journalists being threatened, and killed, in large numbers. I'm sure there is a vairety of scenarios, but many are definitely the type exposing local corruption or opposing the criminal degradation of the country.

Monogamy was Roman law, as promulgated by the Roman Catholic Church.
There's nothing in the Bible against polygamy, neither in the Old Testament or the New. The closest is the two verses in Timothy that state that a bishop/elder must be the "husband of one wife". So multiple wives weren't allowed for bishops, but still okay for everyone else.

As I understand it (and this may be wrong, or at least a gross oversimplification), the Roman civilization's legal system advanced/became complicated enough that multiple spouses presented a legal nightmare for estates. What if one spouse has five kids with you and the other one has zero? Should they both get half the estate?
So the Romans punted by making it illegal to be married to more than one.
I think the same was true for most other advanced civilizations (e.g., the Chinese). You could have all the slave women, mistresses, concubines... you wanted, but they wouldn't be legal heirs.

Actually - this has been a topic of discussion several times with both Christians and Jews I've known, and there *is* teaching against in what we Christians call the Old Testament (Law & the Prophets, etc), but it's quite subtle. (the best teachings are the subtle ones)
When you examine the stories of the patriarchs, and other notable historical figures in the books, the ones with multiple wives *always* suffer and got through great grief because of it. The children grow up, and war starts withing the family because one wives sons are favored. The original reason Joseph's brothers hated him putting on airs was because he had a different mother than they did. Davids kingdom was wracked with rebellion and instability because of too many wives.
On the other hand, when there is a stable, god fearing character who lives a good, peaceful life and who is blessed, he is *always* shown with one wife only, and they are dedicated to each other. (Boaz and Ruth, frex)
So it's there. It's just under the surface, but the lesson is clear, if you want a blessed and peaceful life, stick to one wife.

Divorce at the behest of the wife is a relatively new phenomenon. It only exists because women can now independently support themselves. When polygamy was a *thing*, that generally wasn't the case. A woman relied on her husband as the sole means of support.

Wow that first shot is mega-dumb. Just because the Trinity (which is more doctrine than straight scripture, anyway), it doesn't mean that Jesus was evoking anywhere near the same numerical mystery in marriage.
I doubt it was as common as you make it. It was more the style of Hebrews of that time to "put away" one wife and take another (which is why it is addressed). There was definitely more serial polygamy going on (mainly men).
But nothing I said requires polygamy to be rare.
Ban it? He was killed as a rebel. What kingdom has Jesus ever had on this Earth that he could ban something.
Since this is such a brilliant approach--what else did Jesus ban? I think Jesus mainly said "If you love me, you will keep my commandments". His model is all conditional: Let him who has ears, let him hear. To those that can receive his teaching...
He didn't ban anything. Therefore your challenge is feckless. The pattern of Jesus is to reference the prohibition of the Law, and often he recommends newer and better patterns which are the "more excellent way" and the "life more fully" for those that follow him.
The Law is abstract and broad. Jesus is the Incarnation, he is the Word (abstract principle) made flesh. We emulate him. We no longer concern ourselves with following the broad rungs and remedies of the law, but try to follow in His footsteps.
That pattern is repeated and repeated in Jesus teaching. The old practices aren't banned. We are entreated to live a fuller life, to follow him.
It is distinct and exemplified.

Well, you add into it that Grace in Greek is "charisma". When we talk about the "Grace of God" (as opposed to the Law) we are essentially saying The Lord is just an unbelievably compelling and great guy.
The Grace of God is said out of a personal relationship with the Author of the Law.
It is given to us in the words of "Taste" an experience. We will not know that the Lord is good through abstract principles--however reasonable and sustaining, we know that the Lord is sweet by tasting.
