Saturday Morning Coffee Break

rise-shine-20160128-7.jpg

Looks good, French Toast with maple syrup and coffee. Although the coffee appears to be watered down with some type of cream. Oh well you can't have everything, can you?

Mornin' Horde. Let's take a look at a few of the things that didn't get their fair share of attention here at the AoSHQ this past week.

***

  • On the bright side they weren't spiders.

  • The horse goes in the dean's office, not the pool.

  • Traffic cops just doing their job.

  • No word if this is what is wrong with Bill Kristol.

  • Speaking of Bill Kristol, is this his long lost relative? Ahoy!!!

  • Quite the educator here.

  • OK 'Ettes, would you like this jewelry gift?

  • Guns + Waffle House @ 3AM = Death.

  • Who knew there was a black market for this stuff?

Enjoy your Saturday and be nice to one another. If you run with sharp objects do it outside. Have a great weekend!

Good morning, Horde. What a strange night that was. I read the content on the ONT and thought it was funny, but I felt horrible at the time and went to bed at 10:00. I can't even describe the feeling. It was physical, mental, and emotional. All of them and none of them. I don't ever recall anything like that before.

I took my bedtime medications plus a Percocet which usually helps me get to sleep. But after tossing and turning for a while, I noticed that the horrible feeling was passing and I was starting to feel more normal. Since I still couldn't sleep, I got up and went back to the computer.

Yes, this is to be continued. Eventually. When I get around to it.

Over the last couple of years I've gotten less motivated to do yard work. When we moved here 8 years ago, I was filled with energy because I finally had a decent yard in a decent neighborhood.

Turns out, mowing grass to perfect pitch and keeping weeds down isn't as fulfilling as I thought. This year I began a phased withdrawal from the back property line, allowing that section to grow wild so I can build up a green buffer between me and the neighbors. I find I enjoy a spot of wilderness more than uniform-length grass.

64 Life has become an ongoing battle between me and the encroachments of nature. At this point I have come to accept that nature will inevitably win, and all I can hope to achieve is a series of harassing delaying tactics and skirmishes followed by retreat to a new, smaller perimeter. My battle wearied garden tools and my battered body shuffle into the fray anew, but the thousand yard stare belies the false bravado. Today...I rake and bag pine needles. Tomorrow, the gas powered edge trimmer. I despair...yet I have no choice but to carry on the good fight, vain though it may be.

66 I've noticed that since I became a Serious Novelist, bad writing really, really sticks out to me now.

Used to be, I'd watch a show or read a book and think "Gosh, that's bad move for that character," but now I look at it and say "Geez, couldn't the author come up with something more plausible?"

On Friday nights, a friend comes over and we do sort of an MST3K viewing of movies or shows.

Watching a show last night, I had to keep pausing it and laughing at/pick apart obvious tropes.

I have to be careful not to do this with my wife, because she hates it, particularly in romance movies.

On the flip side, I have greater appreciation for movies that get everything right - where the flow, movement, and characters are so perfect that I can still lose myself in the moment. That doesn't happen very often these days. I'm having to dig out older films for that.

We had a wind storm last year that knocked down a LOT of fences, and it was interesting to see how people put them back up. Some did a full reinstall, some patched them. Also DIY vs professional.

This particular neighborhood is right out of a sit-com: people watch each other. More than once I've mowed my grass and had a neighbor squint at my and then pull out his machine to keep pace.

Progressives like to think of themselves as independent and transgressive, but damn these people are right out of Leave it to Beaver for neighborhood conformity.

I prefer black leather sneakers without bright logos. They don't make them for men. They do make them for women and - this is the funny part - they cause less than the male versions.

Only in the front yard. The back is whatever you want it to be.

And the front has some flexibility. Because it's a college town, you can actually let it all "return to nature" but it has to be consistent and tended, not entirely wild.

One of the more disturbing developments of the last few years has been how much more authoritarian the locals have been getting. There really is a difference between liberals and progressives and we're getting fewer of the former and more of the latter. Not a good thing.

143 Turns out, mowing grass to perfect pitch and keeping weeds down isn't as fulfilling as I thought.

Twenty-five years ago when we returned to Oklahoma and the old family ranch, the several acres 'living area' was still maintained much as it was in my grandfather's day.

Of course, my grandfather was a major employer in the Depression, so he could cheaply hire those sweaty highschool lads to push mowers all over the place. They didn't have our zero-turns with which one man can cover most of the place in an afternoon.

But in the past decade or so, we've gone to letting much of the living area go, and bale it for hay.

It's nice to have a huge swath of well-kept lawn, especially knowing it keeps the wild critters a bit further at bay, but it's also nice to watch the grass get high, then get shorn, then have hay rolls in the yard until they're moved out to the pasture.

Assorted local 'ettes today don't get to enjoy a team of bronzed, sweaty, shirtless young men pushing mowers around. Something's been lost. But, hay.

It's interesting to see how much terrible advice people have given Trump.

Like pardoning Flynn. That would have been a huge mistake. Letting it play out was the right thing to do. Same with letting Mueller take his shot and make a fool of himself.

Now we're seeing the same thing with Ukraine.

Trump knows all the inner workings. He understands the value of patience to let these things work through.

Now the Dems have to defend a secret process all the while the government is ticking closer to another shutdown. Pelosi is literally going to shut down the government to get Trump less than a year before the election. How stupid is this?

And how are all those Dem senators and congresscritters going to be able to campaign if the government is closed?

No, not so far. I may have gotten a tiny bit of sleep last night when I tried to go back to bed at one point, but I ended up getting up again.

However, the new bed is assembled and fully up and running! The old one was hauled to the curb, a day late for the trash collection. I'm hoping that a trash picker takes it, but the mattresses are probably ruined from the rain that fell Thursday night. The frame should still be usable, though.

On Wednesday the visiting nurse came by and called someone she knew who works for a company that installs and maintains hospital beds. He came out on Thursday and set it up. It only took him 1 1/2 hours.

So the bed is set up, but the bedROOM needs some work. I'm still pondering how I want to rearrange it.

Then I didn't like them, and started to favor different foods entirely. I've since come to realize that when my parents got divorced, the foods I associated with that period I could no longer tolerate. To this day, I find French toast abhorrent. Weird how that stuff changes you.

I have a couple of chips of the Wall that I knocked out in December '89, a month after the fall. Commies built some sturdy concrete, I'll give them that.

I thought it was a permanent fixture. I was one when it went up, so it was just part of the eternal world.

German TV the last few days is full of stories of how things were (right now a documentary about escaping via Bulgaria) and the old ones explaining to the young ones how it was.

There's the expected amount of grousing about how it's still rougher economically in the east and there were some nice safety nets back then, but it is nothing compared to the constant Stasi spying, no travel privileges, literally being walled in.

202 150 Fun fact: French toast was called "German toast" prior to WWI. Name was changed in the effort to denigrate all things German during the war (e.g. sauerkraut -> Liberty Cabbage). Was one of the few things that did not return to staus quo ante after tge war.

Amish Country in NE Ohio has a town named Berlin. Pre-WW I, it was pronounced the same as the city in Germany. They didn't change the name, but did change the way it's pronounced: BER lin. Still that way today.

And speaking of Amish Country and French Toast, we used to stay at a BnB down that way (in Walnut Creek). The lady who ran it (her hubby is a farmer) is a name in the tourist circles there served a baked French Toast variant. 2 slices of French toast with cheese danish filling between them. Candied pecans on top. I get the filling in bulk and use those candied nuts sold as salad topping. No syrup.

OK, I'm going to skip over the obvious, but. . . Millennials have been brainwashed into accepting/embracing dangerous behavior. They would feel more safe if they understood actions and consequences, such as this feminist notion you can wear anything, behave any way (consistently get drunk with strangers, tinder hookups) and you should not be raped, get pregnant, get STDs. Same with the idea that we can invite refugees and illegal immigrants from crime-filled failed states into our neighborhoods and live in peace and safety. The list goes on. . .

If you mostly wear jeans or pants, then a light hiking shoe like Merrel works.

I'm more of a running shoe guy, so I recommend NB, Asics or Brooks. But I feel your pain. As a former runner, even I wouldn't want to wear most of the day-glow clown shoes from running brands.

You could also try the fashion sneaker lines from NB or Asics like Onitsuka Tiger. Plenty of throw back designs that aren't flashy. Just dont get too active in those. They're more for walking.

There's an interesting book, Appetite City, about the history of restaurants in New York City. The author notes that before WWI, German food was a popular cuisine, but that the war caused almost all of the their restaurants to shut down and that WWII was the final nail in the coffin, so that, while NYC is touted as the place you can find almost anything to eat, the one thing you can't really find is a German restaurant.

My great grandparents were ethnic Germans from Austria-Hungary, the families miraculously arriving in the US in 1912. One side came from Pecs, Hungary, except they called it Funfkirchen. There is a statue there of a German refugee boy in memory of the ethnic cleansing of Germans from Eastern Europe post WW2. No one cared, of course, but the human misery didn't end in 1945 for Germans in Soviet held areas. Reading about what the Soviets did to Koenigsberg is still upsetting.

Most education departments still support major psychological theories that have been thoroughly disproven.

Learning styles (Visual, Auditory, Reading/Writing Preference, and Kinesthetic) has been proven to be wrong on many levels. How would one even try to apply Kinesthetic to learning how to read?

Safe spaces, limited speech, and political correctness all reinforce that the student(s) are fragile and childlike. No psychological theory supports the idea that confirming peoples fears (real or perceived) offers them any mental health values. In fact, most therapy today is based on 180 degrees opposite and people are asked to face their fears to help reduce the trauma (PTSD) in their lives.

    three tricks.

    -Avoid anything with I M G in the URL (also b l a z e r).
Use URL shorteners to trim the address down. I cant remember the character limit but its not very many wide. -Some URLs are okay because they have a lot of breaks or "-" in them which the hampsters can break to another line, but its best to be safe and use a shortener like TinyUrl
-use previews if you can, so people at work or on a sensitive device can check before committing

Turns out, mowing grass to perfect pitch and keeping weeds down isn't as fulfilling as I thought.

    ------------------

When I was growing up, mowing the front lawn was one of my chores. And despite the fact that I was not an only son, it remained one of my chores. The mowing was done with an unpowered mower that had a tendency to jam periodically when it swept up a particularly thick clump of grass.

And that was what I used to mow the lawn for almost a decade.

420 Hey, Cannibal Bob, the meme (which I gather you created) needs to be uploaded to a publically accessible location on the web. Then you can just post a link to the location.

You don't even need tinyurl if the link's not one of those long monsters. Also, it doesn't need to be a clickable link, which I don't think I've ever seen here in the comments. For me, every link shows up as a URL that has to be cut and pasted. (Firefox)

Of course, I seldom know what I'm talking about, so you've got that going for you, too.

The odd thing is that Germany was the same way; lots of little princedoms and mini states until the 20th century. But they integrated really well into a whole. There are cultural differences like the USA, but its all one Germany. Italians can't seem to get that concept.

That's questionable. The west-German premier Adenauer hated the Prussians so much, he used to talk about the Elbe as the border with Asia. To this day the Alliance for Deutschland does well in the old East Germany where it is considered quasi-Nazi in the West.

michael steele should be afraid of "x-factor republican senators". if they impeach, the republican party is finished. kaput. forever.

Most of Trump's voters will follow him. They're with him because of the fecklessness of the party for decades.

Yeah, I remember that, and they were sad.
They were hoping that the Soviets would triumph, but no dice, so they had to ramp up and destroy America all by themselves.

    And here we are.

I think it can be chalked up to the fact that the Wall--and eventually the Soviet Union--came down while a Republican was in office. If it had happened under Carter or Clinton, they would have been less "sad."

So much of the hatred against Trump--from both the Left and the NeverTrumpers -- is due to the fact that he's actually getting things done, and is owed credit.
    They can't have that.
    He makes them look ridiculous.

It's nice to see the city of San Francisco getting ready ahead of time for Autism Awareness Month (April). They could've had a two-fer with Fetal Alcohol Awareness Month; unfortunately they missed out as that was September.
