I don't know Kentucky like I know Florida, but usually most results have early Dem leads from urban reporting, then GOP rural areas report to close the gap. There are also hold out Dem precincts that report late because of "lines are so long that they had to stay open late".

Off year gubernatorial races really do not mean that much in predicting future results as governor's races are pretty idiosyncratic, more so even than presidential elections because candidate qualities and internal party issues in a state result in more variance.
Often in a state dominated by the other party, the only way to change direction is to elect a governor from the other party. See Mass for example with Charlie Baker despite being Dem in every other office practically. California was another. In red states, you get places like Wyoming or Alaska getting tired of the Rep. machine and voting in Dems or Indeps. Currently, Andy Beshear Democrat 610,883 50.3% Matt Bevin* Republican 580,516 47.8 John Hicks Libertarian 23,846 2.0 1,215,245 votes, 83% reporting (3,052 of 3,659 precincts) Fayette and most of Jefferson is in now. But Bevin will pretty much have to sweep the rest of the precincts which appear to be rural but not a lot of votes by high 60-70 percent to have a chance. Also not sure about absentee and military ballots. Posted by: whig at November 05, 2019 08:23 PM (MItID) 189

232. Bevin got cross wise with the Teachers union and probably did not get much help from his erstwhile Senator McConnell who has a powerbase in Jefferson County.
From looking at the map, a lot of Appalachian counties voted for Beshears who is the son of a popular ex governor possibly because of coal industry troubles with a major coal company going bankrupt and not paying workers. All in all, a reminder that state politics are decoupled somewhat from national at the gubernatorial race level. Key is looking at down ballot races where the Republicans have about 55 percent in statewide races as these are usually more party voting offices. The SOS race was interesting but it appears that the Repubs are probably going to win that office with it being ahead with most Demo leaning votes counted. Western KY is more Republican. >>>The Dem trollbots will tell you that states ALWAYS vote the way they go for governor, ignoring the GOP dominance down ballot.
Exactly, because that's exactly what Missouri did in '08 and '12, when...oh, right. Anyway, people were noting Bevin's problems before the results came in, so I don't see why this is getting dismissed as "excuses." I would like to know why Bevin still lost when a number of counties were voting for him by heavier margins than in '15, though. I thought Lurking Lurker got banninated this morning.
Meanwhile I was just at my dive bar. Someone called looking for someone and the bartendress got flustered and handed to phone to a woman bar patron, who politely walked the caller through the s/he's not here no we don't know when to expect him who may I ask is calling. I don't know if you know this about me but I'm a dick. I called the bar. The bartendress answered. I said my wife just called here and said it sounded like you just gave the phone to some crazy lady at the bar. Hilarity ensued. My personal take is that Bevin lost enough teacher influenced votes in counties to lose the race assuming that he did--teachers, spouses, families, etc. as he is running behind other GOP candidates so that he is getting about 5-8 percent less in Southern and Western KY rural counties that the generic candidate. He is currently losing by about 17000 votes with about 350 precincts in mostly Republican areas left to report. My guess it that it is too much to overcome.
The MS race is a similar situation where a popular Dem candidate is running in a state where the Republicans have been in the governor's office for multiple terms with a weak Rep. candidate. Don't really know the dynamics of the race there at all. Posted by: whig at November 05, 2019 08:45 PM (MItID) 353

Unfortunately, as Jinx pointed out earlier, the GOP
majorities in the state house as of today are so narrow that it will only take one seat to flip the state senate and two to flip to the state house, which would mean two years of a Dem legislature along with a Dem governor. Posted by: Vendette at November 05, 2019 08:33 PM (Yeuu4) And so VA will likely flip. State senate may stay, but house likely flip by my crystal ball. Dems flooded a lot of money into these races, and who knows how many zombies, dogs, and unfraternal twins voted, too, to make it happen. I mean, we've caught them at it before. Annoys me to see it, though. Posted by: unwenchable at November 05, 2019 08:46 PM (jqCfy) 361

A lot of the (D) base tends to view state and local elections through a national movement perspective -- they believe they are "fighting evil."
The (R) base tends not to do this. (R) politicians have not made that case as loudly and consistently as the (D) ones have. Also, I don't think that VA and CO are purple states anymore; I think they are blue. On the plus side, I don't think that MI or MN are blue states anymore; I think they are purple. Realignment is still shaking out in my opinion. Posted by: Seldom at November 05, 2019 08:47 PM (UbhbN) 367

The smaller star was the regulation star for Pearl Harbor. Then the size of the stars was ordered increased.
Regulations called for the star to start at leading edge of wing and extend back to the aileron break. But Enterprise enlarged them to cover part of the aileron. That is when they had time to comply with the directives in between fighting a war and maintenance. Accordingly, Bevin is one of the most unpopular governors in the country. Even his own party is lukewarm toward him -- earlier this year, Bevin only won 52 percent of the Republican primary vote. However, President Trump's net approval rating in the state remains relatively high, so connecting himself to the president could pay off. Trump even held a rally for Bevin the night before the election in Lexington. Beshear, the son of popular former Gov. Steve Beshear, has tried to make his candidacy a referendum on the incumbent by going after Bevin's efforts to add work requirements to Medicaid and criticizing his attempts to cut education spending.

As I said above, he did the right thing with the teachers and their union trying to fix the pension crisis that Beshear's father created during his governorship.. tough position that he felt he had to do but he blasted them on the airwaves calling them stupid and such and they and their relatives and families didn't forget, They didn't vote for Beshear but they didn't vote for Bevin either... No, that's not how Massachusetts works. KENTUCKY: Matt Bevin's Gubernatorial Loss Has Nothing to do With President Trump. "In Kentucky, Governor Matt Bevin lost to a Democrat. No Republican Governor of Kentucky has ever won re-election. Democrats have rushed to make this about Bevin, but consider Bevin was at 30% approval and, after Trump's visit, got within striking distance of victory tonight. This really was not about Trump. Kentucky Republicans swept all the other statewide races. Kentucky elected its first black Attorney General, who also happens to be Kentucky's first Republican Attorney General since 1948." And an interaction between two Insty commenters: geek49203 . 12 minutes ago KY guy here. 1. Bevin won 4 years ago cause his opponent ran on the wonders of ObamaCare. Bevin was weak then, and was quite the surprise when he won. 2. Bevin has done so good things, but no one likes the smell of infected corrupted abscesses when they are lanced. It's been quite contentious for 4 years. 3. Bevin himself doesn't exactly have a winning personality that jumps through the TV. That's a real problem, and quite frankly, the main campaign tool of the Dems was that he was easy to hate. 4. Americans always vote for the better looking candidate. That is true here too css123 replying to geek49203 . 2 minutes ago It doesn't help that he pissed of most of the teachers in the state. Throw in a spoiler Libertarian candidate for those that despise Bevin and Beshear equally (that I think based on county breakdowns would have likely split enough for Bevin from those that would have voted without the L on the ballot), you have this result. Now to be fair, there's still some outstanding votes to be tallied (enough to push Bevin over if luck suddenly breaks his way), but this isn't a huge win for the dems with the GOP taking every single other partisan race on the ballot today (both statewide and special election general assembly seats). Cameron will do to Beshear what he did to Bevin (and considering the corruption in Beshears family tree, his dad was the previous gov before Bevin) it's probably not going to be pretty. Adams will likely make some improvements to the SOS office, though he's GOPe in the McConnell camp. The GOP retains majorities in both chambers of the state house. Beshear isn't getting anything done. Posted by: andycanuck at November 05, 2019 09:41 PM (Dh1wo) 723

Netflix money is too good to back out, plus I think they see the writing on the wall with the franchise. Better to go do something new at Netflix than be accused of destroying TWO franchises. GoT fans should be extra ticked. I think gearing up for Star Wars, they pulled their attention from GoT and did not give it the TLC it needed. Not that it would have been better. But they took their eye off the ball and fumbled badly at the ten yard line, and SW might be to blame. 704 When the GOP runs dogshit candidates like McCain and Romney, it becomes a lot easier to understand.
That's unfair to dogshit Posted by: dagny at November 05, 2019 09:38 PM (nRWPy) George W. was just as much of a dogshit candidate as Romney and McCain yet he still won twice. The country has changed since then. It's no longer a center-right country, it's a center-left country. If it weren't for the electoral college Republicans would have lost six of the last seven Presidential elections. Every Republican Presidential candidate faces an uphill battle for two reasons: 1. Immigration. You can't import a million new Democrats every year and expect to keep being competitive in elections. 2. Slippery Slope social issues. The Establishment waved the white flag on too many issues like gay marriage. This allowed leftism to adopt a facade of normalcy in the minds of the voters. Once you can be convinced that Adam and Steve can marry, it's a lot easier to convince you of the benefits of drag queen story hour, and from there suddenly Joe Biden doesn't seem so radical after all. Part of his stump spiel. He attributes his political career in Idaho to hard work, dedication, and marrying the daughter of the richest man in Idaho (JR Simplot). They killed off Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Mary Poppinsed Leia, essentially squandering the last chance at reuniting the original cast and giving them a proper sendoff while simultaneously not creating a compelling and rich story or introducing interesting new characters to carry the franchise forward to a new generation. How can you not have all of the characters in at least one scene together? It boggles the mind that you could buy a franchise and IP for 4.5 billion and have no coherent story arc in place before you start making films? They literally have just winged it. Incredible. I have been reading this blog since the mid-2000's nearly every day. Only recently have I started posting, and I don't yet know a lot of folks.
One thing I have definitely observed is that Lurking Lurker does not like President Trump and is clearly fixated on a desire to see him fail. It is also clear that he wishes to demoralize those who would see President Trump succeed. In sum: it is kind of self-evident what he has been doing here--quite successfully--for a number of months; regardless of what moniker you assign it. "887 But he isn't conceding!
If Trump can make a Republican stand up for himself, he can do anything." The AP has reversed its call for Beshear. No need for false hope but this may be one where a recount does change the result. More than a lame talking point for the Democrats, it would be nice if the teachers union somehow came up short. What has my attention is Virginia and how the GOPe screwed the pooch by micromanaging the state party from inside the Beltway. It's the Southern counterpart to Colorado, and perhaps even more lost. I think I can speak for all trolls -- certainly for myself, probably for "Lock Him Up" -- when I say how much we appreciate your engagement. We live for this, and I mean that pretty much literally.
You see, I know that if I got everything I hope and agitate for -- Trump forcibly removed from the White House in disgrace -- that nothing would change for me. I have no power. I have no influence aside from getting one of you right-wingers to snipe back at me after I strike a nerve. So the news favors us tonight. Even if the momentum of Election Day 2019 carries from state governments to a glorious global order of forced-labor camps and misery for you all, I know that I won't be a part of all that. I can dream of being a Gulag guard, but more realistic aspirations lean toward continuing my pseudonymous trolling of you wonderful people, fashists that you are, from whom I eagerly await your acerbic replies. Keep the dream alive, Lock Him Up -- and maybe talk to a professional about your scatological fixation -- that's, you know, weird. WE'RE WINNING!!!!
