Nine Americans -- Including Six Children -- Slaughtered in Mexico, Likely In a Drug Cartel Ambush

Many more missing, probably kidnapped for ransom -- or worse.

At least six children and three women, all Americans with ties to Utah, were killed in a daylight ambush in Northern Mexico on Monday, likely by cartel gunmen. The family reports that more than a dozen family members are still missing following the attack on the caravan of three SUVs, believed to have been kidnapped following the massacre.

The victims were all part of the LeBaron family and lived in La Mora, a Mormon fundamentalist community established decades-ago in Mexico's Sonora state as an offshoot of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some of the children had been born in Mexico and thus were dual citizens.

...

While early reports have surmised that the cold-blooded murders were carried out by Mexican drug cartels in a tragic case of mistaken identity, the record suggests it's possible that a local drug cartel was targeting the family. A decade ago, two members of the LeBaron family who were known anti-crime activists were shot and killed by a cartel.

Noted sockpuppet and narcissist Pierre Delecto was more measured, because bloodless proceduralism and appeals to cooperation are a liberal technocrat's idea of strength.

The slaughter was so awful, and the signs of Mexico's status as a gangster state so ominous, that even Ben Sasse was impassioned enough to... release a written statement.

My gosh! My hero!

Update:

7 Ann and I are heartbroken for the victims of the horrific attacks in Mexico. Our prayers are with their families who have suffered such an unspeakable tragedy. The U.S. must work with Mexican officials to hold accountable those responsible for this senseless violence.

35 the LeBaron clan featured heavily in Jon Krakauer's "Under The Banner Of Heaven". Polygamist offshoot, with a byline in murder, mostly of LeBarons. One reason they've lasted this long in Mexico is that even the Mexicans are a little afraid of them.

Apparently one of them wrote a new Bible, "Mormon" style. It's mostly a hitlist of that guy's enemies. I also saw in the Daily Mail's picture of one of the kids that he's flashing a hand sign. Looks gang-ish.

I am not entirely sure that this is a cartel. Or if it is, I'm wondering if the LeBarons are a part of it.

99 Been to Juarez a few times and some other parts of Mexico. Like any people, most just want to live their lives and be left alone. The problem is two fold. There's so much corruption nobody can trust anybody. And the populace is unarmed. Remember that the next time some pile of shit tells you that you can't be armed for your safety.

Who gets angry over "mistaken identity"? It's an incident that was born in the passive voice. Oh well.

Remember how they wanted to get rid of the word "terrorist attack"? Same thing. Minimize the anger from Joe and Jane American.

185 It's true these folks chose to live in Mexico to avoid American laws against polygamy. All the adults are Americans and most of the family members hold dual citizenship.

But living in Mexico, even close to the border, exposed these families to enormous risks. Today those risks came home to them in a terrible manner.

Even if the United States responds with violence, these people will continue to live with the risk of more violent attacks on their families, unless they decide to move home. Of course, of they do move home, they'll have to abide by the law.

They do not believe in God or Hell, good or evil, right or wrong. They believe only in power. They see others as one of two groups. . Those who are strong enough to take and hold power, and those who are weak. They see the ones with power having money, women, cars, etc.
They want that also. And they will take it by any means necessary.

Posted by: eleven at November 05, 2019 03:06 PM (tH5fk)

Here's how you do it: make the President of Mexico an offer he cannot refuse. "Buddy, you are going to set up a Mexican Foreign Legion, comprised entirely of gringos and a few Brits or Euros with combat experience in the sandbox. This Legion will nominally be under your personal control, but you will have exactly zero day-to-day input into its command, other than providing intelligence when requested. Real operational control will be handled, unofficially, of course, by the U.S. Army, who may provide "volunteers" to the Legion. You can accept this offer, or refuse it. But if you refuse, we will just invade anyway."

Since the "Mexican Foreign Legion" would, officially be a creature of the Mexican Government, I don't think the Geneva Conventions would come into play, and rules of engagement could be, uh, "relaxed".

315 The victims here aren't "American" in any sense of the word that you'd normally understand it. They are a whacked out bunch of polygamists who fled Utah for Mexico after the LDS crowd had to give up polygamy in exchange for statehood.
These groups have enclaves still in the US as well, they make their living by running various scams and criminal conspiracies. "Anti crime activist" in this context would mean "employed by a different cartel." Not to mention the fact that the Mormons have driven their neighbors to murderous violence in every single case they've moved to a new area. Look up the Haun's Mill Massacre, and that was one of many that happened in the US alone.
I'd bet money that this was a targeted killing based on their own criminal behavior and alliance with a rival cartel faction. This sort of thing doesn't just fall from the sky, even in a place like Mexico.

Well actually, he did try it. For one day in that city of Culiacan. The Cartel won, the Mexican Army lost, and that's all the fight that they had in them. Even the French in WW2 had more fight in them than that.

the tell is that the Mexican army just turned tail and ran, and never looked back. Some were wondering if it really was the Cartels who did this current set of murders - well of course it was, and you need to understand why. Because they no longer answer to any government, they have absolutely no fear, they are complete Lords and Masters of the territory they control, and they can do any damn thing they want with absolutely no fear of any consequences whatsoever.

This is the kind of thing that power mad men do just to prove that they're in total control.

Let's quit playing pretend.

It's time to go clear out the narco-warlords, prosecute their enablers, then hold new elections. We should give the civil governments the choice of either joining the USA as a territory or going independent. Returning them to the pretend-state that has so utterly failed them would only lead to the same old problems recurring in the future.

At some point, an idiot with a D after his name is going to be in the White House after campaigning about how the operation failed (even though it didn't), and pull out anyway.

If your plan requires Republicans in the Oval Office in perpetuity, it's a bad plan.

If you look at the history, the Mormons started setting up colonies there over 100 years ago. Yes, dual citizenship - that's what I said. They are full time Mexican citizens, they live their entire lives in Mexico, like their parents did. And their women come across the border to deliver here so they can claim US citizenship as well. You may be surprised to know that there are quite a few "white" Mexicans. Down in Mexico City, that's the Ruling Class.

Posted by: Tom Servo at November 05, 2019 03:57 PM (Kpl3J)

478 I'm sure there's a worse idea than trying to nation build in Mexico. Granted, I can't think of one right now - but the day's still young. I'll have to work on it. Give me time.

Wanna' take a guess why Mexico is a shit-hole ? Because it's a shitty culture, in the macro sense, that never has and never will do any better for itself. It's not like the cartels came from across the seas and subjugated all the peaceful natives in their white work clothes with hot senoritas. No - the cartels ARE the best and brightest that Mexican culture has to offer. They're as authentic to Mexico as baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Chevrolet is here ... and they're winning there.

How in the fuck does one intend on changing that ? Kill 'em all ? Sort the "good ones" from the "bad ones" ? Teach them through force what private property rights really means ? Good luck, nation builders across the fruited plain. Maybe another Vietnam, this time with a south of the border flair, will get it through your thick heads that you can't bomb anybody out of the Stone Age. But I doubt it.

482 I suspect there are several layers to this "story" that might explain the whole thing , but just like most things these days too many players want to make it about something else.

e.g Bidens Bidenness ???, Epsteins Frolics??? Clintons Crookedness ??? et al.

Since this story bleeds big time it will LEAD to mucho speculado. stay tuned................for mega B.S and obfuscation.

Sorry - but I disagree. A-10's and Apaches are what you send to dust off a couple of cavern-dwelling fundamentalist terrorists in Afghanistan.

When you want to send a message to the cartels that they will understand, you don't drop munitions by the thousands of pounds. You drop it by the thousands of tons.
You block out the sun with the silhouettes of America's strategic arsenal. It's projecting power. It's saying "there's literally nothing you can do to stop this from happening".

Why is it always the same outfits who can't get their heads and their asses wired together? We don't have to send people to Japan to help them with water safety and quality measures. How long have people been drinking water in Africa? When exactly are they going to get their shit together and out of the water supply?

Not me. No more than the drunk can blame all his problems on the liquor store. The only way we fuck Mexico is the same way we fuck everyone else - by trying to help.

Cultures choose the way they are. They are what they are for a reason. Themselves.

The last time this happened was a century ago, during the decade-long
Mexican Revolution, which eventually triggered the invasion and
occupation of northern Mexico in 1916 by the U.S. Army, including the
mobilization of the entire National Guard and a call for volunteers.
Before it was over, U.S. forces attacked and occupied Nogales, Sonora,
in 1918 and Ciudad Juarez in 1919.

515 The cartels control almost all commerce in much of Mexico. If you purchase a lime, avocado or tomato from Mexico, the cartel got paid a fee for permitting transport. It is possible that these Mormons had refused to pay making the cartel seem weak. This was no mistaken attack. It was targeted and horrific precisely to make a point. I have read elsewhere that there was a defense perimeter set up by the attackers with a communications dead zone to prevent any police or military response.
