Learn To Code Watch: AP Celebrates #Woke Journ0lisming Students Who Bravely Soldier On Despite Having No Job Prospects In Dying Industry

Also notice that the Journ0lisming professors who are profiting from this scam -- and who need new marks to saddle with unpayable levels of debt in order to pay their own rent -- call this mindset "optimism."

Yes, yes, yes. Bernie Madoff also got the warm feels from the "optimism" demonstrated by the last entrants into his pyramid schemes, too!

Fake news? No jobs? Prospective journalists soldier on

By DAVID BAUDER

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- The Daily Orange isn't daily anymore.

The student-run newspaper that has covered Syracuse University since 1903, and trained generations of journalists, now prints three issues per week. Editor-in-chief Haley Robertson wonders where she'll find advertisers, worries about firing friends, and searches for alumni donors who will pay to send reporters on the road to cover the university’s sports teams.

These are problems not unlike those that bedevil executives two or three times her age -- evidence of how the news industry’s woes have seeped onto campuses that try to harness youthful energy and idealism to turn out professionals who can inform the world.

Meanwhile, college journalism educators are changing the way they teach in a race against obsolescence. They're emphasizing versatility and encouraging a spirit of entrepreneurship.

"Encouraging a spirit of entrepreneurism" = "get loan to buy a late-model sedan so you can work for Uber and Lyft"

After some brutal years, there are signs of life. Much as the journalistic pursuit of a crooked president in the 1970s inspired a generation, another leader who denounces reporters as enemies on a nearly daily basis has given birth to a new resolve: Enrollment in journalism programs is up.

"When I look at local news and see what’s happening, I'm pessimistic," said Kathleen Culver, journalism professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. "When I look at 18- and 20-year-olds and see what they want to do, I'm optimistic."

So when you look at the actual real-world facts, you're pessimistic, but when you look at the delusions of naive and stupid 19 year olds, you feel "optimistic"?

Optimistic for what? Optimistic for your own economic prospects, given that the army of the ignorant seems inexhaustible?

...

"Seeing the layoffs and seeing newsroom cutbacks is really disheartening," Leffert said. "But what keeps me wanting to be a journalist and wanting to do it here is seeing the effect that the [Daily, or rather Triweekly, Orange] has. It's really cool and exciting."

Yes it's super-cool and interesting to be a Social Media Influencer. And it's even cooler to be a "journalist" to whom Twitter gives special prominence and protections.

This is all basically a racket to get idiots to spend $150,000 they can never pay back (and which will be paid by non- journalist taxpayers, ultimately) just to get a Blue Checkmark on Twitter.

Or in the alternative, raise the academic standards dramatically. Require extensive coursework in a STEM subject, or economics, or history, something like that. I'd actually require more work in those subjects than in writing news articles, which could probably be taught separately in a semester.

It's not all cynicism. It's a case of a real fit between the professors' existing delusions, and their interest. Florence King used to call the former "The Bright Shining Faces Fallacy."

Ace should remember the real wisdom of his earlier posts about how much self___ matters to people. He was absolutely right. It's easy to say "it's all about the money", but that's at best incomplete.

Also never forget that both by selection and training, journolismists are utterly incapable from distinguishing among facts, interpretations, and delusions. The 3 categories are simply not distinct in their minds.

Personally, I think the bar exam requirements should be similar to the CPA exam requirements, which used to be generally that you had a bachelors degree and a certain number of hours of accounting classes.

Arm-twisting Flynn through the "tweaked" version of his interview afforded him criminal exposure. The cocksure Comey team felt supremely confident that would inspire him "flipping" and give them the desperately sought-after evidence of Trump-Russia collusion that the wholly unverified Steele dossier was never remotely capable of providing.

At one time in California you could become licensed to practice law merely by passing the California bar exam, which (I've been informed) was particularly difficult for that reason.

I got out of radio 20 years ago right at the time consolidation of ownership started happening. The market went from having 8 or 9 mostly local owners to 2 out of town mega broadcasters. Lots of jobs lost. Fewer accountants since that could be centralized, fewer engineers since 1 can now work multiple stations in the same building/tower site, fewer ad salespeople since they can now sell for multiple stations, and fewer DJ's and newspeople.

They found out quickly that it was cheaper and easier to pick up shows off a satellite and broadcast them than paying individuals to do the same thing. Kind of like what newspapers are doing these days with just running AP stories instead of having a reporter of their own cover it.

Companies can't choose the best applicant by background or proficancy tests anymore. So now everyone has to have a college degree to prove they have the intelligence to learn the job. simple really. High school students are utterly convinced that they MUST go to college to get any job at all but don't have a clue as to what they really want to study. Psych degrees are the easiest and high school counselors are actively recommending this to students who don't know what to study in college

The word journalism itself can be deceiving. A journal is a diary, so to
speak, of one's observations and observations are rife with one's
opinions of whatever is being observed. Quite the opposite from
reporting, which is the simple recounting of who, what, when and where
something happened. Notice that I left out the why, because the why
invites interpretation and therefore opinion and agenda.

209 Well, that was an eventful three hours.

I needed to go out to the drug store, the grocery store, and to vote. It took me longer than I expected to get ready. I didn't leave the house until 11:00, and a home care nurse was due at 12:30. Also, yesterday someone from the trucking company called and said my bed would be delivered between 1:00 and 5:00. So I figured that I still had enough time to run my errands and get back home.

I returned at 12:40, and the nurse wasn't there yet. As I was unloading my car, she pulled up. About 30 seconds later, the Pitt Ohio truck pulled up. Yesterday there was some question whether the bed would be delivered on a pallet and/or whether the driver would be willing to move the boxes into my house. Would he just leave a pallet in my driveway? If the latter, would the boxes take up my whole living room?

The driver was super friendly and moved the boxes into my house. There were three large and heavy boxes, but they were thin and he propped them up vertically so they don't take up much room at all. I can easily maneuver around them for a few days until I can get the old bed moved out.

The nurse stayed for an hour. She said she was going to give me physical therapy but said that she could see that I had had a busy day and was moving around pretty well, so she will be back tomorrow for the PT.

Honestly, this all worked out perfectly. I could not have planned it any better if I tried.

In Virginia you can sit for the bar exam without going to law school, but I believe you have to get a member of the bar to vouch for you. I know a few people that went this route, they worked for a small law firm as a paralegal or legal aide for a few years, got the attorney to vouch for them, and then passed the bar. They can only practice in Virginia, and then if admitted to the regional federal courts, there.

There is no need or value intrinsic in thrusting a microphone into the face of a grieving family or friend and asking them to describe how they felt when they heard their loved one had been raped or murdered. But, that's just the treatment for ordinary people. Powerful people (Democrats) can rape, murder, commit pedophilia, and engage in Satanism and pedophilia and the press either doesn't pursue the story or is pulled off the story. Then we have the press reportage that contains not one iota of truth or fact checking--provided the reports concern Trump or someone like him.

224 I contend the media killed itself.

When they started to self identify as Journalist vice Reporters, it showed a change in mindset.

A Journal is a personal document about how you feel about something. Its YOUR observations.

A report is a factual document, ie who what when where how.

People don't really CARE about how your feel about something, they need FACTS so they can decide how THEY feel about something.

MSM has killed itself.

Look at the change at Fox News. It used to be NEWS all the time, now its Journalists talking to other Journalists, about subjects they really don't know squat about.

Yet it fills the airwaves.

Several things I've seen recently mention him rising in the polls, the MSM pushing him, but he does poorly with minority voters, so he can't be a successful Dem candidate. Then, the make sure to stress that minority voters aren't homophobic, and it's actually based on his failures as mayor, firing a minority police chief, etc.

I'm thinking internal polling is already showing Trump doing well with minorities, and two of the four Dems (Warren and Buttigieg) are duds for that critical Dem voting block.

OT, but for those who watch/read progressive sites, have you noticed
recent reports on Buttigieg regarding minority voters? Several things
I've seen recently mention him rising in the polls, the MSM pushing him,
but he does poorly with minority voters, so he can't be a successful
Dem candidate. Then, the make sure to stress that minority voters aren't
homophobic, and it's actually based on his failures as mayor, firing a
minority police chief, etc.

I'm thinking internal polling is already showing Trump doing well
with minorities, and two of the four Dems (Warren and Buttigieg) are
duds for that critical Dem voting block.

Posted by: Grimaldi at November 05, 2019 02:41 PM (IfpGX)

Warren, Pete, and Bernie are all polling poorly with minorities, it's why Bernie failed to Hillary last time. Biden does well with them because he was Obama's VP, but he doesn't "inspire" them to go out and vote.

There's no "historic" this election. The Dems have already had a woman and a minority candidate, so there really isn't the groundswell for one of the candidates.

And a hispanic candidate would fracture the party because the Dems seem to be pandering more and more to them at the expense of the AA bloc of the party.

I'd say less than 50. I worked in minor league sports, and the guys that made it to the top league were head and shoulders better than the guys whose ceiling was our league, AA. Their schemes were much better, player positioning was spot on, who to play when other players were playing better, setting the lineup to the opponents was spot on, and who to play and rest worked to perfection. They won with lesser talent we usually saw because they were usually hired to go to the next level and the same team would fall way back the next season.

I traveled to Nebraska City, NE last week and had a closed skull brain surgery to remove my Essential Tremor on my right side. I had an MRI guided Focused Ultrasound Ablation of the right side of my thalamus.

It's very strange to be completely bald, but, it is wonderful to be able to keep food on a fork and to write, etc. I am doing OK, but, the high dose cortisone wore off Sunday so there is some swelling of the brain, which has me feeling tired, dizzy, and I have no appetite.

386 Warren, Pete, and Bernie are all polling poorly with minorities, it's why Bernie failed to Hillary last time. Biden does well with them because he was Obama's VP, but he doesn't "inspire" them to go out and vote.

There's no "historic" this election. The Dems have already had a woman and a minority candidate, so there really isn't the groundswell for one of the candidates.

And that's the D's problem. People would have stood in the rain or drove thru snowstorms to vote for Obama. Beta guys would have voted for Hillary because the girlfriend dragged them to the polls.

But a heavy snow storm or cold temps, do you see anyone really saying: Yeah. I'll put down the coffee and don the boots and gloves and vote for Joe . .. Warren or Pete? NO.

The corollary to that is tech people who don't understand the primary goal of their job is to produce a product that makes money. I've had a thousand conversations to that effect telling developers that it's not about how elegant your code is, it's how fast can it go to market. Obviously you don't want sloppy code. But the marginal benefit spent from getting the code from very good to the best ever is not high. Devs never seem to understand that.

395 I marvel at phones now. People pay $1000 to buy ... a
phone?? I thought Starbucks had a racket in charging $5 for a cup of
coffee, but $1000 for a phone is outrageous.

And to use the phone costs about ten times as much per month as a phone bill used to be. Go figure.

Posted by: Deplorable Jay Guevara at November 05, 2019 02:47 PM (hGXZE)

I paid $150 for my phone that a couple of years ago was about $700. I pay $30 a month for unlimited calls/texts and 30gb of data. That phone replaced my fax machine, telephone, answering machine, pager, financial calculator, computer, gps, compass, radio, cd player, scanner, camera, and video recorder. Which cut my need to having 2 phone lines and paying outrageous amounts for long distance phone calls which are now part of my $30 a month.

It sounds expensive, but for what it does, it's a bargain.

Posted by: Oldcat at November 05, 2019 03:10 PM (FTPn0)

397 You got more for a trade in and you got fucked on the interest rate. So your payment is lower but the portion of that payment that goes towards principal payoff is smaller. So in 4 years you're way upside down. And then most likely you then roll over that amount into the new loan, creating an even bigger profit for the dealer. And on and on and on....

NEVER NEGOTIATE PAYMENT!!

Hell don't even negotiate price. Negotiate components of the deal independent of each other. The sum of those components make the best deal.

or just don't fuck around with payments and pay cash.

398 They just have to auto fellate that Watergate dick, don't they?

Once upon a once a time, I was on the board for a university paralegal program. I also lectured for the program. Now, mind you, the board position was unpaid and the lecture position paid nothing (see re: universities outsourcing nearly all teaching to lecturers) but I did it because I loved it.

I voted to shut down the program because the cost of the program was well in excess of what the students could expect to pay back given the pay scale of the area and I could not in good faith continue the program knowing that. It was just flat out wrong.
