The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

This is a few weeks old, but it seems like a harbinger of things to come, or at least the leading edge of an all-too-disturbing trend. Cops in NYC are pelted with water and garbage and assaulted in the subways and probably much worse stuff that de Blasio is hiding. And law enforcement all across the nation are either passive in the face of resistance to their lawful authority (Portland, Berkeley, etc) or are vilified, often with no justification for their actions.

As many of you know, I am no defender of law enforcement behavior, and at least part of this growing disrespect for the law is a direct result of the growing militarization of the police, and their self-imposed isolation from the communities they guard.

Whether the response by the Oregon State Police is appropriate remains to be seen, but part of me is smiling. The idea that Oregon State University will be better served by the Kampus Kops rather than a presumably professional organization is laughable.

State Police to pull out of Oregon State after being attacked over arrest: "You're on your own now"

The agency made the announcement Wednesday, just two days after state police officials released the arresting officer’s body cam video footage showing an Oregon State Police campus officer’s arrest of a black, female student.

The video itself was in excess of 30 minutes and showcases everything from the cited traffic related infraction and subsequent arrest for failure to comply with a lawful order.

Obviously the race-obsessed lunatics who scream "You will respect ma color authoritah!" when they get parking tickets will be emboldened, as will the Antifa types and BLM and a host of others who revel in any breakdown of civil society.

Another rational note in the cacaphony of lunacy that is Oregon is the Clackamas County Sheriff telling the city of Portland to pound sand, that his deputies will not be responding to routine calls within the city, because it's just too nuts!

We are already pretty close to colander masks and assless chaps in Portland, so this might not even be noticed, but then again, eventually the protesters and professional rabble-rousers will attack the wrong (or right) person, and there will be a few masked antifa scum bleeding out on the street.

Then it will get sporty.

24 The reason there hasn't big a blow-up yet is because people still think - at least to some degree - that laws are a thing and that the cops respond to lawbreaking.

The more examples we have from places like Portland, Seattle, Berkeley, etc. of cops standing idly by while one team breaks laws like they're going out of style, but brutally enforcing the laws against the other team, the closer we get to vigilantism and anarchy.

More cerebrally but less viscerally, the more examples we see from Washington and New York of cops bending over backwards to exonerate and not prosecute one team while inventing fictions and responding with extreme prejudice against the other team, the closer we get to rejection of law as a concept.

Sporty indeed. And it will be like going bankrupt - slowly at first, then all at once.

I would think the same thing. Not sure how the SP came to be their law enforcement provider. Possibly it has to do with jurisdictional issues. The State University is State property kind of thing.

85 40, I think this situation is distinguishable--what you have is more like discriminatory policing where the local police know that Antifa is supported by the local and probably state Dem party along with the elected prosecutors. Syria, Libya, and so on are in active rebellions where the central government lacks the ability, even if it wanted to, to enforce any sort of order.

By contrast, Antifa is state sponsored terrorism against the state's ideological opponents which either leads the removal of their opponents or their silent submission to the ruling regime.

Firearms only work against true anarchy or when they are used in a true rebellion rather than fighting a dominant political and social structure. From all indications, Oregon is that way because a majority wants it to be so or at least doesn't care what happens to the opposition.

And if that means being detained...fine. But I sure as shit am not stupid enough to give the cops a ration of shit. Thy have guns and batons and tasers and strength in numbers. I will lose.

89 There's a scene towards the beginning of "The Fifth
Element", always cracks me up. The future police are looking for Bruce
Willis (Corbyn Dallas) so he puts his nametag on his scummy neighbors
door. Police knock, scummy neighbor screams "F. U.!!!!", Willis
mutters "wrong answer", next scene shows scummy neighbor being dragged
out in a bag.

He keeps telling me that if I can get to Cyprus he's got some hot Ukranian women who are just dyin' to meet you.

Now, when the Greenland thing came up all the whiners on BBC were going on about the indigenous peoples and the whatever and mistreatment.

The Inuit got there after the Vikings. The Vikings got there around 850 AD, I think. They didn't run into Inuits for a couple of hundred years, and that was only in the seal hunting season (summer) when they made expeditions way north. The Vikings left, but the Inuits are as indigenous as the filthy Scandis.

If a cyclist is using the road same as automobiles, then they should be prepared to provide identification, the same as any driver. And yes, cyclists on the roads can be dangerous, especially if drunk or distracted. They fail to stay in their lane, weave through traffic, blow through intersections, etc.

149 Our hyper-Progressive city council has told the police that they can no longer conduct a search of a person without written consent from that person.

We currently have no chief of police, the city council having made a series of hires based on checking-the-PC-boxes. Either 3 or 4 now over the last couple of years.

In each case, the selected person was inept or incompetent. Over the last 10 years, we have been without a chief of police for more time than we have had one. How in the hell are we going to get someone who is genuinely good to step into a situation where their (and their officer's) hands are bound by f*cking SJW idiots?

It's worse than that, of course, virtually every hire they have made in the last 10 years or so for any municipal position has been a SJW-oriented outsider.

The local Gannett rag recently asked, "Why is Asheville so difficult to manage?" I just about exploded when I saw that. The answer is "Because it has been made difficult to manage".

If anyone is suggesting urban warfare, then you are positing where authority has been destroyed--in Afghanistan, it was the Soviet Union that destroyed the community while in Iraq, we destroyed Saddam's government. In both case, no authoritative government existed as did the withdrawal of royal officials in the colonies during the American Revolution. Absent such conditions, the state will win. Most rational folks are terrified of disorder and will support suppressive measures to end it.

A pretty good read of what it takes (in a fictional world) to raise a successful rebellion is discussed in the Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein or the real life actions of the Sons of Liberty. Both took advantage of a distant central authority that could not act quick enough to stem it. Both actions though took place under existing grievances among more or less a majority of the population. Such does not seem to exist in Oregon for example. Mack Bolan reads better in fiction that someone like him would function in the real world.

The one thing about revolutions, no one is really able to predict exactly how it comes off. 223 Funniest thing I remember in my freshmen dorm - at the end of the semester, a lot of us were done with finals and we lived in a four story boys dorm, and a party started and it went wild. Some of my friends and roomies and (I may have been involved) aggravated things by filling a 55 gallon trash can with water from the showers, and then leaning it against the elevator doors as they close, and sending it down to the first floor.

So, the Kampus Kops got called, and they came charging in, looking for the culprits, left their car running out front, they were in such a big hurry. Well they had just started when someone looked out the window and said "hey look there goes your car!!!" So they ran back out. (and never made it back to the dorm that night, thankfully)

The police car disappeared for a couple hours, but then someone saw it at a local gas station which had some coke and snack machines in public place, and they called and wondered why a cop car was repeatedly ramming the coke machines and trying to get stuff out of them. So a chase began, and the car took off into a huge muddy field, and he got stuck in the mud, and all the cops chasing him got stuck in the mud, and in the dark the driver bailed out and disappeared into some nearby woods and was never caught.

A couple years later I met a guy who told me some really interesting details about how the driver escaped, that no one except the driver would have known. heh.

252 171 82, And such will be treated as the return of the DC Sniper with national and state law enforcement mobilized. The dead Anti-fa will be immortalized like the dead Communists in Greensboro, NC and so on.

You might get the best case, the American Revolution, or you might get the French, Russian, or Chinese Revolutions. Better to avoid that by engaging in the political system as even Winston Churchill said during the Cold War, it is better to jaw-jaw than to war-war.

Just enforce the law. Every street & road have minimum speeds. Some minimums are posted. Some aren't. Usually it's 20 or thirty less than the posted speed.

258 cut off all their government sponsored loans, while we're at it. Their little SJW communes only survive on easy money, which lasts till they figure out they will be debt slaves perhaps for a lifetime. Last I heard, even bankruptcy does not cancel a student loan. Quite a racket.
Posted by: illiniwek at November 07, 2019 11:38 AM (Cus5s)
++++++++++++
The student loan bankruptcy reform was a damn disaster. As always, government's *only* solution is to throw money at the problem.

College is expensive? Throw money at it. College gets more expensive because of inflation? Throw more money at it.

This is easy enough to fix, but no one will because it is a YUGE sacred cow:
1) No more government money for higher ed. No grants, no scholarships, no subsidies.
2) Government is forbidden from writing student loans.
3) Bankruptcy reforms are reversed, allowing student loan debt to be discharged in bankruptcy.

If this were to happen, there would be a LOT of effects. At least:
* Student debt interest rates will probably go to or exceed credit-card levels. Demand will plummet.
* Student lenders are suddenly going to care - a lot - about choice of major and performance and the prices will match.
* Enrollment will drop, perhaps catastrophically, for a couple of years
* Many colleges are going to go bankrupt and get liquidated and sold. Many will be turned back into colleges, except on a rational basis.
* College costs will collapse. So will college luxuries (elaborate dorms and gyms, programs for everything, etc.).

I was an RA at an LSU dorm once that had 13 floors. All the windows had pad-locks on them due to a long history of people throwing stuff out, but it wasn't uncommon to see one open (you could see an open window from a mile away). So this meant that the padlock had been cut, which was a $10 fine. We always had to call a campus PD officer first before knocking on the door to issue the fine. So the campus cop comes and we go knock on the door. Voice inside says "Come in!". So we did, and found the kid smoking a joint with the window open.... while cleaning his pistol.

The existing laws are sufficient to put a serious hurt on antifa street theater and lead back to its funders and political supporters via civil and criminal liabilities.

315 >>So the Estonia thing is from Rudy? Do you think anyone will believe him?

No, Rudy says he has proof of Ukraine to Latvia to Cyprus to Biden. He claims to have bank records and if so that would be hard to refute.

But the implication is pretty clear in the world of money laundering we live in. Estonia was the hub but money came in from a bunch of eastern European countries with Latvia being one of the largest sources of laundered money.

You know who else was into money laundering? Someone who didn't kill himself in jail.

316 Problem is that the university will be fine with the cops pulling out and with installing campus security that it controls. Posted by: Boots at November 07, 2019 11:47 AM (oGBso)

Definitely. @Tom Servo, I'd say parts of Chicago and Baltimore (and many other big cities) are low-intensity conflict areas, but still within the governance paradigm. The shift occurs when people look to the gang rather than the city as their primary source of protection. The gangs aren't big enough or have enough income to be able to do that . . . yet.

* Many colleges are going to go bankrupt and get liquidated and

The current higher education system in this Country can't exist without virtually unlimited student loans. It would literally collapse the minute the spigot was turned off.

Our Credit Union still does some student loans but they charge 5.99% and that's with a Tier I credit rating.

320 252, You would find parallels in the Whisky Rebellion attacking "revenuers", incidents in Reconstruction, the draft riots of NYC during the Civil War, etc. Truth is that cities have always been on the edge of governance and the biggest cities attract the biggest rats.

That being said, economics providing private sector jobs and investment that improve the lives of those living in the cities are a better way to tame the cities rather than force because once you let slip the dogs of war, no one's life, liberty, or property is safe.

For that reason, we should do everything possible to avoid violent conflict by fighting peacefully within the existing political system and not make civil war an inevitability. One example is that state governments can act against recalcitrant cities to restore order as Gov. Abbott is doing in Austin by eliminating the overpass druggie settlements. Israel has another good example of fighting the Antifada over the decades now.

Agreed. I hate to say it because it's actually racist, but the minority group mayors and police chiefs the cities are electing and appointing these days are better-positioned to do that in a way that's acceptable by the population than white counterparts would be. But things are going to get really sporty this summer, and especially after PDT wins reelection.

If there's shooting all bets are off of what comes out at the end.

327 The popular theme about the militarization of police seemed to start with Radley Balko, who was highly biased towards legalizing drugs. Here in So Cal, I see cops and deputies mostly driving around alone in patrol vehicles or on motorcycles; not in groups or in heavily armed vehicles like in the military.

Yes, during critical incidents I have seen SWAT teams heavily armed and sometimes with an armored vehicle.
