The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Up until recently, the default assumption in America was that, "Of course we are free, and we always will be!" But all-encompassing control of the people is becoming easier and easier for governments and corporations, and in the case of governments, that's pretty much why they exist.

So, while we have been blessed with a combination of exceptional raw materials and a fair amount of luck, freedom is not the equilibrium that humanity seeks.

The Internet Is Less Free Than It Was a Decade Ago, Report Says

The report noted that in much of the world, there are obstacles and perils to using the internet. More than half of internet users live in countries where certain political, social, or religious content was blocked online. In addition, 71% of internet users live in countries where individuals were imprisoned for posting about political, social or religious issues on the internet.

China was ranked the worst abuser of internet freedom for the fourth consecutive year, reaching what the report called “unprecedented extremes.” The country tightened information controls ahead of the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown and amid pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, according to the report.

This is more like the typical human condition, and anyone who thinks that we don't have to work and fight and die for freedom is fooling himself.

But it won't happen in America the way it happened in China, whose people are much more comfortable with authoritarian government. It "comes on little cat feet," but short of revolution that ratchet goes only one way...

We Americans used to chafe at being told what to do. Maybe it's time to return to our roots.

All the tags there say "Obey Little, Question Much" or some such thing.

Mark Steyn made an interesting point recently, what if the tranny movement is part of a strategy by the left to try to square the gay/muzzie circle?

If a boy is a little light in the loafers, telling him "that means your gay" isn't acceptable in Islam, but "that means you're a girl" would actually be ok, as seen in Iran's policies.

Not sure if I agree, but it was interesting food for thought.

119 This is an excellent perspective. My great^6 or so grandfather or so was here prior to the revolution. Supported the crown.

And then moved to Canada.

So some of us are having to steer an entire family tree back in the right direction.
Posted by: TexasDan at November 05, 2019 11:08 AM (yL25O)

Your ancestor *may* not have been pro-crown; I had one branch that fought for Washington and the Revolution, but another that were Mennonites that had come from the Old Country, and they were very profoundly anti-violence, anti-war. Their reward was that they were hated by *both* sides during the Revolution, since they wouldn't support the Rebels and they wouldn't fight for the Crown. That branch ended up being part of a group of 50,000 Mennonites that moved up to Canada from Pennsylvania and upstate New York at the time, because there was no war there. (my ancestors from that line ended up moving back to South Dakota at the same time as Laura Ingalls and her family homesteaded there, not far from her)

I do credit that branch as being true non-conformists; they were willing to accept the condemnation of all sides of the fight around them, to stay true to their own beliefs.

The lie of transition is an attempt to force people, under the penalty of law, to accept something that is an obvious lie. If you can make them pay lip service to a huge lie (females with dicks, menstruating men) you can much more easily get them to accept smaller falsehoods.

How far the transition lie goes depends on, to some extent, on whether or not Mengele mom and the courts (especially the courts) can make dad silent on the chemical castration of his son. If they can do that, they can come after other kids even if neither parent agrees and use kids to better control parents. And people thought the Hunger Games were fiction when they were really a grotesque leftist blueprint.

167 119 This is an excellent perspective.

Posted by: Tom Servo at November 05, 2019 11:16 AM (Kpl3J)

...

That's interesting. He was a physician, in western New York.

But he moved to Canada because King George granted him lands in the St. Lawrence river valley, for supporting the crown. Others received land there too, per my understanding.

Interestingly, one of his descendents, I think not my direct forebear, became a civil engineer, and was part of the St. Lawrence seaway project, flooding his own ancestral lands.

201 seems to me the algorithms to control us via Google and FB and others, was engineered with political (and covert military?) intent, way before "social media" was given the special provider/carrier status. (you can't sue us, we are just providers of an open service).

It is not just bias by millennial trolls in the system, it goes to the top levels, and likely imo, was etched in the early agreements that gave NSA back door access to everything. That is the access that was routinely (illegally) used to spy on everyone in the world that used electronic comms.

DeepSpy was in effect in 2002 or so, was used to spy on Trump Tower ... and John Solomon said he had "spies/spooks" whatever .. men that met him at at night by his mailbox once, saying they wanted him to probe deeper, because they knew the tools they used against terrorism were being abused, and they feared losing their tools.

We are still hoping there are enough white hats at work ... Barr, Durham, and the one we know of now from Lee Smith ... Kash Patel, a former DOJ national security prosecutor, "who knew the nature of the enemy". Nunes has put together a team around him, doing a wide-ranging investigation on abuses and crimes committed by senior US officials ... calling the effort "Objective Medusa".

These things need to come to light, and DeepState is fighting for their life, trying to stop Nunes and Trump and the rest, from finding out. That outcome may determine whether the internet becomes more free, or a totalitarian social credit score weapon of mass destruction.

We told the club teacher this plan and were informed that since we didn't state that on the permission form we would have to send a note and get approval from the principal. Small town public school that actually educates the kids, same one I attended, principal was a class mate of mine. I send the note. Note comes back with another form. This one explained that parents picking kids up from club activities or athletic event is frowned on and we must have extremely urgent reasons for doing this. I sent the form back stating my "urgent" reason as....
Because we are her parents and if we want to pick her up we will. Your silly school policy does NOT take precedent over parental rights.

220 I enjoyed the first season of Amazon's Jack Ryan, but I've heard nothing but bad things about the second. Most notably, they portray Venezuela's president as a nationalist in the mold of Bolsanaro rather than the real-life socialism of Chavez/Maduro.

As much as I can't stand him in real life, I have to say that Alec Baldwin is still the best Jack Ryan.

222 How far the transition lie goes depends on, to some extent, on whether
or not Mengele mom and the courts (especially the courts) can make dad
silent on the chemical castration of his son. If they can do that, they
can come after other kids even if neither parent agrees and use kids to
better control parents
=====

The best voices and the most attractive men were castrated either for music or for ensuring no cuckoos in the nest.

Nothing but reversion to barbarism will be accepted.

I am really a Midwestern optimist and I thought the Pritzker Military Library was a good thing -- they had great speakers on public television, etc.

I will respect the service of the Pritzker person while being wary of physical castration for political gain. Jeeze Looize, talk about reverting to the 'nasty brutish and short' lives we were all warned about.

That's what the Deep State truly is.

They're fascist throwbacks. Leftovers from when our elites were enamored with Mussolini. They never lost their love of his ideas, they just hid it behind Keynesian economics and the voodoo of "Modern Monetary Theory". It's still the same, oligarchic, top-down "State Knows Best" mindset.

239 The Huguenots in France got mostly wiped out because the French Government was simply too strong, and too closely allied with Rome. Northern Europe was able to support protestantism because the local rulers in all of those areas were sick to death of having to answer to Rome.

It's generally believed that individual freedoms and rights were allowed to grow and become widely accepted in England, and the English speaking culture, because England's central government was *never* able to achieve the kind of total control that the French and Spanish monarchies could impose. (for just two examples).

The article is 9 years old, but it pays lip service to the idea that there's a lot going on that's leading to this dumbing down.

Selling internationally has gotten much worse since then, and selling out to the Chinese in terms of content significantly worse.

However, his core complaint, that smart movies are terrifying to movie studios is spot on.

I was talking about how I would love to see more "Logan"'s in theaters. Instead of just another Terminator movie like all the others, do a Logan type movie about the characters involved.

My great idea for an Obi-Wan movie was always low budget, set in the desert, and about the former jedi protecting a small settlement from bandits while regaining his faith in the Force.

Why not try to make another Inception by getting talented people together to pursue their creative impulses? Because the suits don't understand that. They can't quantify it. they can't say, "a similar movie made x dollars last year and we're going to cling to that."

And that's where Scorsese is. No major studio would give him the money for The Irishman. Netflix did. Then the theaters lashed out at Scorsese for going with Netflix, but they buried his last adult movie (Silence).

271 The huge problem with movies made to appeal to both domestic and foreign audiences is that they need to go for lowest common cultural denominator. Anything more than the most basic dialogue is out, because clever writing rarely translates well. Character development is also tricky from culture to culture, so forget spending time on that. Everyone likes 'splosions, so lot's of splosion's. And you can always get a market for comic book movies, with caricatures in place of characters, so lots of comic book movies.

Case in point: the new Midway trailer shows SBD's and TBD's flying at unrealistic speeds. The SBD cruised at around 250 knots and TBD's were around 100 knots, especially when carrying a torpedo. In the trailer they're zooming around like jet fighters and that just kind of spoils it for me.

There's blame to go around everywhere.

Just taking Silence as an example.

The distribution studio mangled the release. They skipped every festival and simply released the film just after Christmas, so it never got any award season buzz.

But, it was a long, slow, intelligent, and harsh look at Jesuit priests in feudal Japan being persecuted. That appealed to me immediately, but how many Americans were jonsing to see something like that? I knew I was in the minority.

And what did theaters do to help? Did they try to keep it on their screens for an extra couple of weeks to try and give a great film some business? Or did they drop it as soon as they could? Did a bunch of theaters simply refuse to show it because it wasn't marketable?

It's really weird how nobody in Disney seems to really care about the fact that now that they've got these huge expansive cinematic universes means that they can tell a bunch of cool different stories in those universes.

We had Rogue 1 (a war movie), Logan (a western) and arguably Deadpool (a comedy), out of something like 20 years of 2 cinematic universes where every other movie has basically just been a 2 hour episode in the huge open ended silver screen TV show they've been producing.

Cinematic universes don't just let you tell an Episodic story over the course of many years in movies, it lets you tell unique and fun stories in those universes without having to do the narrative worldbuilding every time.

In the same way that the audience knows that the Nazis are the bad guy in WWII, you can make war movies in Star Wars against the Empire.

367 By the way I do not give a rats ass if the gov of mexico does or does not want our help. if lawless gangs on our border hurt Americans, then all bets are off and we should take matters into our own hands

It may not be diplomatic, but it's in the President's bailiwick.

368 Cinematic universes don't just let you tell an Episodic story over the course of many years in movies, it lets you tell unique and fun stories in those universes without having to do the narrative worldbuilding every time.

Yeah they are so locked into "this is what the franchise is like" Bible-style film making they can't see the opportunities.

Yes, you make the main central movies along those lines; like James Bond, you make 007 movies in a certain way. But Star Wars has a whole universe, and there needs to be more variety in the kind of movies being made. Horror films, comedies, tragedies, romances, spy movies, war movies. There are a zillion possibilities here. Instead we get Star Wars: part XCVIII again. There's been some small effort in that direction, but not enough.

Comic books are some of the most wildly variable settings ever invented. The same comic series can go from comedy to horror to romance to gritty sad story in sequential issues. You can have time travel, fantasy, alien invasions, street crime, espionage, wild west, ANYTHING in a comic book story.

So cut loose for God's sake, give us variety.

371 We are a lot less free and kind of don't realize it.

For my job, I interview people. In the last year or so, many people who have been fine with talking now only want to do communicate via email. They are afraid they will say something "wrong" and it will be on the internet and haunt them forever. FYI, I do technical articles, so it's not like I ask anyone abut anything controversial. Yet people are now self censoring and paranoid when talking about their jobs.

Not good.

372

I still believe in my country.

Nothing anyone can ever say or do will shake that belief.

I will fight for it in the thick of the battle, or unheralded in the background, but I'll be present.

I know the country will prevail as it has in the past, so no matter if I live to witness the victory or not it WILL happen.

Because I'm an American, and as such, am denied the option of failure.

373 "I got the nod to write the 6th edition version of Western Hero for Hero Games"

So what you're saying is, I have an excuse to buy Old West terrain and paint those miniatures?

374 And if you still think it can't happen here, I invite you to look at the long list of powerful Americans who want to control what we say and limit what we can do with our votes. Every institution is full of them.
A decade ago I would have excluded the armed forces, but Obama used the only "magic wand" he had - corruption - to make sure that leftist leanings became a criteria for promotion, and righteousness an iron ceiling.

375 "Of course we are free, and we always will be!" If one is classified as property, they will never be free especially when their only absolute right is to reside in the United States.

"Therefore, the U.S. citizens residing in one of the states of the union, are classified as property and franchises of the federal government as an "individual entity"", Wheeling Steel Corp. v. Fox, 298 U.S. 193, 80 L.Ed. 1143, 56 S.Ct. 773

Supreme Court: US vs. Valentine 288 F. Supp. 957:
"The only absolute and unqualified right of a United States citizen is to residence within the territorial boundaries of the United States."

376 Regarding the first paragraph, about the decline, this is a very well written analysis of how it happened. http://thezman.com/wordpress/?p=18975
